Junior School Open Day Junior School Soiree Summer Uniform Farewell Mrs Michelle Walsh Dates Ahead

From the Headmaster Last Week of Classes for Year 12 Next week will see the conclusion of formal teaching classes for our Year 12 students. There will be a series of formal farewells during the week, including the Prize Giving Assembly on Tuesday, with prizes to be presented by our special guest, Mr Tim Smith MP, Member for Kew, Shadow Minister for Education and Shadow Minister for Scrutiny of Government. On Wednesday morning House farewells will be held with cuff-link presentations by the Grammarians Association. The day will finish with the Leavers’ Service at St Mark’s Church at 6.00pm, followed by a Valedictory Dinner in the Members Dining Room at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. While these days in some ways mark the end of a significant time in the lives of these students, I have reminded them that their year is not yet over, and in fact, they face some important examinations in the coming weeks! I encourage them to keep their focus on their studies until their last examination is over. I would like to thank our Year 12 students for all that they have contributed to our school community in the time they have been with us. The full resources of the school are available to them during their study leave, and I wish them all the very best for their examinations.

House Drama Competition It was terrific to be able to watch the finals of the House Drama competition last night in the Middleton Theatre. Congratulations to Schofield House for winning the competition this year. The House plays were of a very high standard, and are completely the responsibility of the students, who direct and act in them as well as providing backstage support. It was great to see so many students involved in each production and to see how they had worked so closely together to produce such polished pieces of work. The theme this year was ‘Mini Musicals’. Thank you to our Adjudicator, Mr Myles Collins. The final results of the House Play Competition are as follows: 8th

Many thanks to all boys, parents and CGS families who helped on Open Day. The vast array of activities and the effort from all volunteers to showcase them, acted as a reminder of our wonderful community. Dates Ahead

What a fantastic, fun-filled, family day the Open Day proved to be! The School was alive with activity, adventure and information. Our school is what it is because of the people who contribute so wholeheartedly and participate so fully in its being. I am in awe of the marvellous work done by parents, staff and boys in putting together such an enjoyable and comprehensive CGS experience. From the stalls to the classrooms, information booths and activities, grounds and performances, the school community was bubbling with enthusiasm and pride. The boys’ performances were delightful. Thank you one and all for making Open Day such a marvellous community event.

The school’s best Badminton players competed in the Victorian Badminton All Schools Championships at MSAC on Thursday 18 October. Jason Tran (Year 11), Benjamin Chen, William Nguyen and Otto Zhao (Year 9) made it back-to-back championships for the school in an outstanding exhibition of skill and endurance. The round-robin format meant that every game was vital, with the most pivotal coming up against Maribyrnong College, which we won in the tightest of contests, three rubbers to two. Congratulations to Jason, Benjamin, William and Otto.

Music Open Day Thank you and congratulations to all musicians for your performances on Open Day. The breadth and depth of our music programme was on display across the whole school from the Junior Recorder Ensemble, to the Senior Orchestra and everything in between. Open Day is always a busy day for our music students and staff, and I hope that all of our students enjoyed performing as much as I know our visitors, parents and guests enjoyed listening to them on the day.

Drum Line In the final weekend of the Term 3 school holidays, Henry Koswig (Year 11), Matthew Ong (Year 9) and Jordan Murphy (Year 9) attended the National Drumline Camp near Kyneton. The event is an intensive, three day marching percussion camp for drummers of all ages and skill levels. This year’s event had participants from across Victoria, Cairns, Western Australia and Tasmania and hosted Ralph Nader (USA) as the featured instructor. Ralph is a world renowned marching percussionist. We are particularly proud to note that both Henry Koswig and Matthew Ong were chosen for the most advanced ensemble at the camp, with Henry fulfilling the role as lead snare, while Jordan Murphy worked on a very challenging tenor drum part in the intermediate ensemble alongside Fiona Mowat, a senior percussion teacher from Launceston, Tasmania. Drumline also presented a colourful and exciting performance on Open Day as part of our Cadet Parade and we are keen to find new recruits! Tryouts for students from Year 8 to 11 are now open to any student considering joining Drumline for 2019. The next session will be held in the Henley Room on Wednesday 24 October at lunchtime next week.

Licentiate in Music, Australia (LMusA) Congratulations to Matthew Wu for his efforts in achieving his L.Mus with Distinction on Piano last week. Matthew has been honing his technical and performance skills all year (and for quite some time before then) with regular performances in Assemblies, music student recitals and chamber music concerts. Matthew is also a key member of our viola section in the Senior Orchestra and Highton Strings, and regularly plays viola in chamber groups. L.Mus with Distinction is a huge achievement for any professional musician, but to achieve this level by only Year 10 is quite exceptional indeed. He will be presented with his Diploma from the AMEB at a special ceremony at Melbourne University next year.

Biennial Concert Videos The second half of the concert is now available to view here. All of our concert videos and photos are also up on our Music page, accessible through the Parent Portal. Ben Bishop, Director of Music

Tax File Number Year 12 students are reminded yet again that they cannot enrol in a CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place) university course next year without a Tax File Number (TFN). You can get one by applying online and then having your identity verified through an interview at a participating Australia Post office. To apply, visit TFN Application.

Low Income Healthcare Card Once finished school, and no longer a student, you may be eligible for a Low Income Health Care Card. Eligibility is based on your income over the previous eight weeks, so as long as you earn less than $4,448 over that period ($556 per week) you should qualify. This card provides concessions to TAFE courses and public transport. It is recommended that all graduating Year 12 students consider applying for this card once the exams are over. Visit Low Income Healthcare Card to learn more.

Study Assist The Study Assist website provides information to students about Australian Government assistance for financing tertiary study. There is very useful information on applying for study loans, paying back loans, scholarship opportunities and more. Visit Study Assist. Lynette Reiger, Careers Counsellor
