Edition 39, 15 February 2019

From the Headmaster After a very busy start to the year, it was good this week to settle into a more normal routine and to see our students focussing again on their studies. It has been terrific to see many of our students and staff members taking Indra out for a walk throughout the day – she has become a very popular member of our community!

Year 4 – Angelsea Camp Our Year 4 students appeared to have thoroughly enjoyed their experiences on camp this week at Angelsea. The camp provides a wonderful opportunity for the boys to challenge themselves in a range of settings and to work together. It was great to see the teachers interacting with the boys in a different way to the normal classroom. These types of activities provide an opportunity for the boys to build new friendships and allow new students to feel more comfortable with their new classmates and teachers. I am very grateful to all the staff who have been involved in these camps, enabling our students to have such wonderful adventures and opportunities.

CGS and CGGS Parent Education Seminar Our next Parent Education Seminar, Creating Happy Health Families will take place at 7.00pm on Tuesday 12 March 2019 in the Camberwell Room, Camberwell Grammar School. Our guest speaker on the evening will be Adolescent Psychologist, Mr Andrew Fuller. He is a clinical psychologist working with many schools and communities in Australia and internationally, specialising in the wellbeing of young people and their families. Please let our convenor of the Parent Education Seminars, Mr John Allen, know if you are intending to come on mja@cgs.vic.edu.au. Further information is included in a flyer later in this Bulletin. Paul Hicks, Headmaster

Middle School Curriculum Information Evening Many thanks to all of the parents who attended our Curriculum Information Session run by Mr Scott Wyatt. The evening provided some excellent advice as we start a new school year; helping to establish a solid routine and maximise the opportunities at CGS.

House Athletics Trials A sea of colour engulfed the Keith Anderson Oval (KAO) this afternoon for Week 1 of 3 of the Year 6 and 7 House Athletics Trials. The boys had some fun as they took part in high jump, vortex, standing long jump, shot put, sprints and middle distance. These trials will help to select the best teams for the coveted Inter-House Athletics Carnival later in the year.

Congratulations to our Year 8 boys who took part in the first round of Outdoor Education for 2019. The boys take part in two training session prior to the full-day excursion. Activities included horse riding, white water kayaking, rock climbing, sailing, mountain bike riding and rowing.

Swimming Best of luck to our swim team, who compete tonight at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School; swimming against PEGS and Yarra Valley Grammar. Our boys and coaches, under the eagle eye of Mr Nic Campbell, deserve huge praise for their commitment to the gruelling early morning and afternoon sessions. The swimming season culminates with the AGSV Final at The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) on Friday 22 March, 6.30pm. The school provides transport to and from the venue for the team and student spectators wishing to attend. More information will be provided on this closer to the time.

2019 Junior School Parent-Teacher Meetings Wednesday 20 February 3:40pm to 9:00pm and Thursday 21 February 3:40pm 6:00pm On these two evenings there will be an opportunity for you to meet with your son’s classroom teacher and specialists. The purpose of this introductory interview is to provide an opportunity for you to meet your son’s teachers and to share important information about your son. As this is the first occasion new families have to meet with specialists we request that, unless you are a new family to CGS Junior School or have a pressing issue to discuss, you do not book an interview with specialists. You would have received an email explaining how parent/teacher interviews can be booked on-line from 2:00pm Monday 11 February until 2:00pm Monday 18 February. These meetings are for parents only, if as a last resort you need to bring your Junior School boy or siblings we request they are adequately supervised or quietly occupied outside classrooms during interview times. Please note, due to Government regulations boys who are not booked into Aftercare cannot join this group in outside play. As the Library is used for interviews, it is also unavailable. Parking is available in front of Kingussie, in Pre-Prep parking at this time and through Gate 3 to the underground car park. Diane Collins, Deputy Head Administration, Junior School

Sports Report Although some teams were unable to play due to unfavourable weather, Camberwell had another successful weekend of sport overall. The First Table Tennis team had a clear win against rivals Trinity on Saturday. Nathan Shi showed exceptional determination and leadership with a determined comeback to win in 4 sets after dropping the first. Support from Ethan Tang (Year 11) and Thomas Coulter (Year 12), ensured Camberwell secured the win with the final scores ending up as CGS 14 rubbers, 44 games to Trinity 1 rubber, 10 games. The Second Gold Basketball team had an enthralling game with a buzzer-beater finish to get the team over the line. CGS started the first half slowly, giving up rebounds at both ends of the court due to immense pressure from Yarra Valley. However, a spirited comeback led by Ruben Hopkins (Year 11), who top scored with 11 points, resulted in the second half being considerably more in Camberwell’s favour. With only four seconds remaining, Camberwell were one point behind following a late foul. Taking the ball, Hamish Wild (Year 11) passed to an open Harry Rush (Year 11) who then ran down the court to score an open layup right on the buzzer for a heart-stopping win.   Firsts Basketball had a tough encounter with Marcellin. Camberwell started strongly in the first 2 quarters thanks to great hustle and pressure by captain Jack Amling (Year 12), to stay within reach of Marcellin coming into half time. Liam Thomas (Year 10) played with tremendous effort and determination in the second half to stay competitive and within striking distance. However, despite winning the 4th quarter, Marcellin were too good in the end, defeating Camberwell by 29 points. Despite a rain-affected game, the Lawn Bowls Squad were still able to salvage a win against Trinity. The A team defeated Trinity’s A team 6 shots to 2 whilst the B team dominating winning all 9 ends. Excellent bowling from Elijah Pannozzo, Nikila Jayasuria and Liam Brady saw the team win 6 games to 2. With their first ever game in the AGSV competition, the 7B Tennis team were thrilled to win against Mentone.  Matthew Tong (Year 7) and Nick Dillon (Year 7) led a great team effort with the boys eventually winning 10 sets 61 games to 1 set 13 games. Congratulations to all other Year 7 boys who started their sport this week as well, hopefully your future with Camberwell is an enjoyable and successful experience. Finally, good luck to all teams in Round 7 of the AGSV season! Sam Garrard, Captain of Games Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport

Music Music Program Resumes It is a wonderful thing to hear the sounds of music lessons throughout Highton and Mallinson and rehearsal rooms full once more as we resumed our regular programme this week. I would like to welcome all of our new musicians (and musicians-to-be) to CGS for 2019, and welcome back to all of the boys and families who we have missed over the break. Please make a note to check your/your sons’ rehearsal and lesson time in the parent portal each week and please get in touch with the music office if you have any questions or concerns. The music school can be contacted between 8.00am to 4.00pm from Monday to Friday on 9835 1744 or anytime by email music@cgs.vic.edu.au.

House Music Competition Our Senior School Houses are preparing in earnest for the 2019 House Music Competition, to be held on Thursday 28 February at 7.30pm. Parents are welcome to join us in the viewing gallery in the foyer of the PAC. The night is expected to conclude by approximately 10.30pm and involves every boy in the Senior School. This years’ competition will be adjudicated by Choral Director Mr Jonathon Welch AM, and promises to be an exciting evening once again.
