welcome Welcome to our Spring/ Summer 2019 season. As I write, we are just coming to the end of rehearsals for our pantomime Aladdin. Over the coming six weeks, we will welcome around 30,000 customers from across the region. Panto is the one show in our year that unites theatre-goers of all ages and walks of life. From nursery school trips to office parties, families who regard their annual panto visit as an essential part of Christmas to overexcited school groups, grandparents bringing their grandchildren on their first visit to the Theatre to some of our lifelong customers reminiscing about panto trips from years gone by, all are part of our panto community. The show has been in preparation since January; the debates about songs, plot lines, casting and jokes are all over, the scenery and lights are arriving and our brilliant Front of House staff are ready to look after everyone and keep all comers supplied with ice creams. So please join us as Aladdin goes on the greatest adventure of them all, laugh, sing, shout, forget about your worries and Brexit! Sir Ian McKellen will be bringing his one man show to us for two nights in May and we feel very honoured to be included on his tour in his 80th year. The show will start with Gandalf and he hopes it will end with some of the audience joining him to act on our stage. All surpluses from the shows will be used to improve facilities for our customers with disabilities and will hopefully raise enough to buy a new hearing loop for our hard of hearing customers. At a time when many famous actors aren’t prepared to tour, Sir Ian is making a very practical and personal statement about the importance of regional theatre to the cultural life of our Country and we are all very grateful to this true acting legend.

Cambridge Arts Theatre is managed by The Cambridge Arts Theatre Trust Ltd. Registered in England No. 03536370 Registered Charity No. 1069912. Registered Office: 6 St Edward’s Passage, Cambridge CB2 3PJ VAT Registration No. 229 1368 04

The rest of our season offers something for everyone from the laugh out loud The Comedy about a Bank Robbery from the makers of The Play that Goes Wrong, our own production of the new stage adaptation of Rebus: Long Shadows based on Ian Rankin’s Rebus detective novels, the overdue return of the wonderful Regent’s Park Theatre production of To Kill a Mockingbird to Noël Coward’s wonderful A Song at Twilight starring Simon Callow and Jane Asher. I hope we can tempt you out, more than once, to see some of these amazing productions. If you are struggling to choose, please ring our fantastic Box Office team who will be delighted to advise you and gossip about theatre! Finally, I want to thank all of you who have supported us this year. As an independent charity we are hugely reliant on the income from our shows and this year we have been thrilled to have such major productions, both pre and post West End, playing to packed houses. This is only possible because of the loyal support we get from you, our brilliant, audience throughout the year. Thank you and I hope we will see you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre. With my best wishes

DAVID STARKEY

A MONARCHY OF MISFITS? The marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, when the second son of the Prince of Wales married a divorced American actress of mixed race and uncertain religion, was seen as a fundamental modernisation of the British monarchy. Historian and presenter David Starkey (Radio 4’s Moral Maze, Question Time) traces the radically shifting marriage customs of the British monarchy, from the laxity of the Middle Ages, through the stringencies of the Hanoverians, to the house of Windsor and its sometimes contorted adaptations to the realities of modern family life.

WEDNESDAY 23 – SATURDAY 26 JANUARY THE MARLOWE SOCIETY PRESENT

Much Ado About Nothing WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTED BY RICHARD BEECHAM BY

Sparks fly in the Sicilian sunshine, but romance won’t win easily in this feisty comedy. One of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, Much Ado About Nothing marries witticism with sharp edge, introducing us to two of Shakespeare’s most loquacious lovers: Benedick and Beatrice. A vivid and compelling tale, this romantic comedy explores the nature of love, and asks whether romance alone can truly overcome the obstacles of family, society, honour and deception. Cambridge University’s Marlowe Society, one of the university’s most acclaimed dramatic societies, returns to Cambridge Arts Theatre after its string of successful productions in recent years including Romeo and Juliet and Edward II. The Marlowe Society has launched the careers of some of Britain’s greatest actors including Sir Ian McKellen, Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston and Derek Jacobi, and continues its tradition of showcasing the best theatrical talent at the university.

World famous author Sir Hugo Latymer is growing old, rude and haughty. In the private suite of a hotel where he lives, he is attended to by his long-suffering wife and former secretary, Hilde, and Felix, a handsome young waiter. Here he nervously awaits the arrival of an old flame, actress Carlotta Gray, with whom he enjoyed a two-year love affair more than forty years ago. What can she possibly want now? Revenge for his uncharitable characterisation of her in his recent autobiography? Money, to compensate for a second-rate acting career? It turns out Carlotta is writing her own memoir, and wants something much more significant than cash… Bittersweet, hugely entertaining and full of sharp wit and repartee, A Song at Twilight is about harbouring secrets and regretting missed opportunities. Simon Callow is an acclaimed actor, writer and director, best known for the films Amadeus, Four Weddings and a Funeral, A Room with a View and Shakespeare in Love. Recent stage credits include Equus, Waiting for Godot, Shakespeare: The Man from Stratford, and Noël Coward’s Present Laughter. Jane Asher is one of the UK’s most accomplished actresses. MARK BENTON AND NIGEL HARMAN ★★★★★ Metro ★★★★ The Guardian ★★★★ The Times ★★★★ Daily Mail ★★★★ Daily Express ‘First prize is a Cadilliac El Dorado! Second…a set of steak knives. Third prize is you’re fired!’ Lies. Greed. Corruption. It’s business as usual for TV and stage stars Mark Benton (Waterloo Road, As You Like It) and Nigel Harman (EastEnders, A Chorus of Disapproval) who are set to thrill as the deal-chasing cut throat Chicago salesmen in the first ever major UK tour of this highly acclaimed awardwinning West End success. ‘HYSTERICAL’ BROADWAY WORLD

Bill Kenwright presents a brand new production of one of the most hilarious and brilliant plays by Tom Stoppard, the Tony and Academy award-winning writer of Arcadia, Travesties and the hugely acclaimed film Shakespeare in Love. Two famous but desperate playwrights are stuck on an ocean liner headed for New York, feverishly trying to rehearse their latest show before reaching land, and opening night. But they are constantly distracted by their delicate composer’s attempts to end it all, having overheard his lover confess her feelings to the leading man. Add an absurdly unorthodox waiter, a mistimed lifeboat drill and a vanishing glass of brandy and soon the sharp Atlantic winds turn to world-class gales of laughter as these colourful characters become tangled up in a typically Stoppardian string of absurd events.

Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience. Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the RSC, National Theatre, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions. I can’t forget the thrill of first appearing at Cambridge Arts Theatre when I was an undergraduate in The Marlowe Society productions. Alongside Derek Jacobi and other future professionals, I played in Shakespeare, Marlowe, Ibsen and Anouilh. Since, I’ve returned many times with the old Prospect Company, the Actors’ Company. Most recently I was in the audience to see one of Ken Dodd’s last shows. All profits will go towards a new hearing loop for the theatre and better access provision for their customers with disabilities. See you there, I hope!”
