welcome Welcome to our Autumn 2013 season. As I write this the normal sounds of our Theatre have been replaced by the drilling and banging of builders. Greasepaint and costumes have given way to hard hats and high-vis vests! We are now well into a seventeen week building program which will lead to a transformation of our foyer and bar spaces. Great theatre is always all about what is on stage, but the overall experience is so much more pleasant if you can meet friends before for a coffee and get a decent glass of wine in the interval without too much queuing and stress. If you can get to the loo without battling your way through crowds and perhaps even hang on after the show for a drink and a natter about the play you will surely have had a great evening at the theatre. These works mark a first and decisive step towards delivering our Act Two vision to build a vibrant and sustainable theatre. There will still be a lot to do once we have finished this work but it feels great to have got started. Please do bear with us whilst the work is being done, building projects on this scale can hit problems so it might take us a little while to get everything working really well. It’s definitely going to be worth the effort and you can see some pictures of how it will all look at www.cambridgeartstheatre.com We are incredibly grateful to the Arts Council, Kings College, Cambridge City Council and a number of major donors particularly our Chairman Baroness Cohen and her husband Jim for their steadfast and generous support. It has been very hard raising money in these austerity times and we are very proud to be supported by these outstanding and visionary organisations and individuals. We all have a lot to thank them for. The wonderful Globe Theatre will be returning in September with a spectacular staging of Shakespeare’s seldom seen Henry VI trilogy; Lynda Bellingham will be playing to packed houses in the wonderful A Passionate Woman; our younger theatre connoisseurs are in for a treat with Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach; the feel good musical Save the Last Dance for Me is returning; English Touring Opera are presenting a thrilling trio of baroque operas; and Ben Miller will be starring in The Duck House, a riotous new comedy about the MP’s expenses scandal. And just in case a major building project didn’t give us enough excitement for one year we have decided to do Robin Hood for the first time in nearly fifty years for our annual panto! Robin Hood, Maid Marian and their band of Merry Men will be battling injustice and foiling the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. Many of our panto favourites will be back including Matt Crosby as Nurse Nelly, Rolan Bell as Robin Hood and Stephen Beckett as The Sheriff of Nottingham. Get ready to cheer and boo, sharpen your swords, practise your archery and have the best family outing in Cambridge this Christmas. Thank you as ever for your support and I hope to see you all again soon this Autumn in our wonderful new foyer here at Cambridge Arts Theatre. Now where is that tool belt and hard hat…? With kindest regards,

Construction work on the first phase of our ambitious ACT II project is underway. From the autumn, it will be easier and more enjoyable to move around the building. There will be extended bars with new seating areas for drinks before a show and during the interval. Come and have a look around – we hope you enjoy your newlook theatre! HHHHH ‘Clive Francis storytelling is as fresh, ingenious and enthralling as if it had only this minute sprung to life’ The Irish Times

Cambridge Arts Theatre welcomes back the renowned actor Clive Francis this November as he repeats his acclaimed RSC performance as the misanthropic Ebenezer Scrooge. After Charles Dickens’s bicentennial last year, Francis’s reading will be inspired by Dickens’s first reading and performance of A Christmas Carol on December 27th 1853 at the Birmingham Town Hall. Almost 160 years later, Francis will be bringing to life one of Britain’s favourite Christmas tales live for one night only.

HHHHH ‘Spellbinding’ The Times

‘I have endeavored in this ghostly little book to raise the ghost of an idea, which shall not put my readers out of humor with themselves with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it’ Charles Dickens - December 1843 Don’t miss your chance to see a whole host of Dickensian characters, from the spectral Jacob Marley to the warm and loving Bob Cratchit and his son Tiny Tim, not forgetting of course the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Clive Francis will be generously donating his fee for this performance to Macmillan Cancer Support.

King Lear By William Shakespeare

Old King Lear, weary of royal duties, proposes to break up his kingdom and divide it among his three daughters. But this rash generosity is cruelly repaid and Lear discovers too late the false values by which he has lived – and, in turn, the suffering common to all humanity.

Every evening at 7.30pm Thursdays, Saturdays and Sunday 21 at 2pm Please note there is no performance

Tempestuous poetry shot through with touches of humour and moments of heart-rending simplicity, King Lear is one of the deepest artistic explorations of the human condition. Performed on an Elizabethan-style stage, a small troupe of travelling players breathe new life into Shakespeare’s great tragedy. Joseph Marcell will play King Lear. He is best known for his role as Geoffrey in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and has previously performed at the Globe in Much Ado About Nothing (2011) and Coriolanus (2006).

The Taming of the Shrew By William Shakespeare

Two wealthy sisters in Padua must be married off. The modest, demure Bianca has no shortage of suitors, but who on earth will take the wild, ungovernable, ‘shrewish’ Katherina? Perhaps the gold-digging Petruchio, as maddeningly strong willed and perverse as Katherina herself, will be equal to the task of bullying her to the altar. Direct from the Globe and performed on an Elizabethan-style stage with an all-female cast, a small troupe of travelling players breathe new life into Shakespeare’s outrageous comedy. Starring one of theatre’s great screwball double-acts, a couple hell-bent on confusing and outwitting each other right up to its controversial conclusion.

Henry VI

Three Plays By William Shakespeare

HENRY VI

The plays which make up Shakespeare’s Henry VI create a world without ideology; a savage time, when the heroes are not kings, but formidable women, such as Joan of Arc, or rebels, such as Jack Cade. Bold characterisation, black comedy, rhetorical power and, in the personality of Henry VI, touching pathos combine in Shakespeare’s powerful rendering of a country racked by civil war. Shakespeare almost certainly did not set out to write a trilogy. Each play can be enjoyed without knowledge of the other but for true theatre lovers there is the rare opportunity to see all three parts in one week, with the chance to devote yourself to an entire day of the Bard on Saturday 21 September.

HARRY THE SIXTH Tuesday 17 September, 7.45pm Saturday 21 September, 12.30pm

Following the death of Henry V, celebrated for having united England and subjugated France, divisions appear at the highest levels – first between those around the infant Henry VI, later between the two great factions in English politics: the houses of Lancaster and York. Only the young Lord Talbot, locked in combat with the bewitching and enigmatic Joan of Arc, seems capable of redeeming a divided and dishonoured kingdom.

THE HOUSES OF YORK & LANCASTER Wednesday 18 September, 7.45pm Thursday 19 and Saturday 21 September, 4pm

The saintly Henry VI is undermined by his nobles, especially the ambitious Richard, Duke of York, and by the Kentish rebellion, led by the charismatic Jack Cade, popular champion and savage critic of England’s social inequality.

THE TRUE TRAGEDY OF THE DUKE OF YORK Thursday 19, Friday 20 and Saturday 21 September, 7.45pm

A bloody power struggle opens up between the King’s party, led by the fearsome Queen Margaret, and the Yorkists, led by first Richard, then his sons Edward and ‘that lump of foul deformity’, Richard of Gloucester. From the award-winning writer of War Horse comes this inspiring tale of enduring friendship. From the African veld to the battlefields of First World War France, follow the adventures of Bertie and the White Lion as they strive to find sanctuary amongst devastating adversity. As a young boy living in Africa, Bertie rescues an orphaned white lion cub, but is forced to part with it when he is sent to boarding school and the lion is sold to a circus. Former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo catapulted onto the world stage in 2007 with the National Theatre production of his book War Horse. in the original Greek with surtitles

The triennial Cambridge Greek Play returns to the Arts Theatre. After the success of 2010’s Agamemnon, the same creative team return this year with a double bill of tragedy and comedy. The tradition of performing a play in Greek every three years at Cambridge University extends back to 1882 and boasts impressive alumni, from Rupert Brooke to Ralph Vaughan Williams. This is a unique opportunity to hear the extraordinary language of these two great plays, with a newly commissioned orchestral score by composer, Alex Silverman. From the suffering Prometheus, trying to save mankind, to the madcap meanderings of the all-singing, all-dancing Frogs, this promises to be a rich and varied night of great theatre.

‘It is high comedy – sophisticated and wise. It soars and sings with the enchantment of a happy unfettered bird.’ The first major revival in 50 years of these intimate one-act plays by Sir Peter Shaffer (Amadeus, Equus) – both short and bitter-sweet comedies performed as a matching pair on the same night - gives a fascinating window into the turbulent changing attitudes to love in the 60s through a brilliant combination of comedy, pathos and drama.

Written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran (Goodnight Sweetheart, Birds of a Feather, Shine on Harvey Moon), featuring the unmistakable music of Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman, and with authentic recreation of the sound of Rock ‘n’ Roll, this nostalgic, feel-good journey will transport you back to music’s golden era as we follow two teenage sisters through the summer of ‘63.

Monday – Saturday, 7.45pm Friday, 8pm Saturday, 4pm and 8pm: £15/£25/£30/£35 Thursday, 2.30pm: £15/£20/£25/£30 All tickets are subject to a £2.50 booking fee

But young love and holiday romance is never as simple as it sounds, and the sisters soon realise that while the world around them is still watching itself in black and white, life and love can be much more colourful.

Previous ETO Productions

Baroque Opera from Venice

Monteverdi’s

The Coronation of Poppea Thursday 14 November

‘Covent Garden would count itself lucky to host a baroque show of this calibre.’ Michael Church, The Independent (reviewing ETO’s 2011 production of Handel’s Xerxes)

Love, power, morality, corruption... Monteverdi’s final masterpiece The Coronation of Poppea is often described as his greatest achievement. Depicting the early days of the tyrant Nero in vivid detail, it concentrates on his reckless passion for young Poppea, and the consequences of their affair for all around them.

Handel’s

Agrippina

Friday 15 and Saturday 16 November An unlikely comedy about Agrippina’s struggle to secure Rome’s throne for her son Nero, Agrippina is set to some of Handel’s finest music, making it a youthful masterpiece of dazzling invention, virtuosity and humour.

Cavalli’s

Jason

Wednesday 13 November Cavalli’s Jason was a runaway hit when it premiered in Venice in 1649, and it proved one of the most popular operas of the 17th century. The opera opens after Jason has abandoned his wife, Isiphile, for the sorceress Medea. Cupid, protector of Isiphile, intervenes on her behalf, sending Jason and a motley cast of characters on a rocky journey back to his family in Lemnos.

Please note: All three operas will be sung in English. Wednesday – Saturday, 7.30pm: £20/£25/£30/£39 All tickets are subject to a £2.50 booking fee Free pre-show talks, 6.30pm on Wed 13, Thu 14 and Fri 15 November. Booking essential on 01223 503333

Starring

Ben Miller

The Duck House is an outrageous new laugh out loud comedy set in a world of dodgy receipts, dodgier deceit, and pure Parliamentary panic. May 2009. Gordon Brown’s Government is in meltdown and a General Election is just one year away. Labour backbencher Robert Houston loves being an MP and will do anything to save his seat – including change sides. All is going well with his switch from red to blue until, on the eve of his final interview with Sir Norman Cavendish, a Tory grandee, the Expenses Scandal breaks. As public fury mounts over taxpayers’ millions being frittered away on second homes, moat-cleaning, cable porn and duck houses, Robert and his secretarial staff (aka wife Felicity, student son Seb, girlfriend Holly and Russian housekeeper Ludmilla) find themselves in big, big trouble. Ben Miller (BBC1’s Death in Paradise and The Armstrong and Miller Show) leads an all-star West End cast as the MP who’s got it all – and has claimed for most of it. Tony & Olivier award-winning Terry Johnson (Hysteria, End of the Rainbow) directs this hilarious satire from two writers who’ve been making fun of politicians for decades: Dan Patterson (BBC2’s Mock the Week) and Colin Swash (BBC1’s Have I Got News For You and Private Eye).

We have two house wheelchairs which we can provide for all performances. We are able to provide free of charge a limited number of Sennheiser headsets and Sennheiser personal induction loops, which are discreet and easy to use. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office, at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. BSL performances The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. Captioned Performances Words will appear, as they are spoken, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage.
