welcome Welcome to our spring/ summer 2016 season. This year we celebrate the 80th anniversary of our opening. I often wonder what our Founder, John Maynard Keynes would make of what we have become. His rather stern portrait hangs over my desk and serves as a daily reminder of the illustrious history of our Theatre and the legendary names who have trodden our boards. I do hope he would be proud of what his Theatre has gone on to achieve and that he would feel that this season is a fitting tribute to all the greats who have been part of the first 80 years of our story. We will be welcoming back The 39 Steps fresh from nine years of West End and Broadway triumph; Martin Shaw will star as the eponymous anti-hero in the pre-West End run of Hobson’s Choice; Samuel West will play Noël Coward’s diva, Garry Essendine, in Present Laughter; Matthew Kelly will reprise his critically-lauded role in Richard Bean’s Toast and the award-winning Clybourne Park, in its first ever regional outing, with its biting critique of social and racial politics in America is sure to prove provocative.

During the 400th year since Shakespeare’s death the legendary Shakespearean actor Michael Pennington will be giving us his King Lear; the University Marlowe Society will showcase the stars of the future in Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure and English Touring Theatre are reviving Peter Whelan’s wonderful play about Shakespeare’s daughter, The Herbal Bed. John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men will be a huge hit with audiences young and old and Goodnight Mister Tom is with us immediately after its West End run. Younger audience members can meet The Gruffalo’s Child and see their bedtime favourite What the Ladybird Heard on stage; murder mystery fans are in for a treat when Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace star in Peter James’ The Perfect Murder and English Touring Theatre will be bringing us their new adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s classic, Brideshead Revisited. Donizetti and Gluck rarities. Musical theatre fans are in for a treat when they can help create their own one-off musical when the West End hit Showstopper! The Improvised Musical comes to Cambridge, whilst Gareth Gates and Maureen Nolan lead the cast of hit 80’s musical Footloose. At the time of writing we are just finishing rehearsals for Cinderella. Once again the reputation of our Theatre and our legendary panto has enabled us to attract a ludicrously talented cast. With our trademark mix of freshly-minted story telling, slapstick humour, the odd naughty joke and fabulous music from across the years, Cinderella will be the family outing this Christmas and New Year. We have put on as many performances as possible over the holidays but many are selling fast so get your bookings in soon! As a charitable institution we are more than ever reliant on donations to supplement our ticket and front of house income. We have relaunched our Supporters’ Circle to highlight the ways you can get involved and play a more active role in the life of our Theatre. Please consider supporting us so that this Cambridge institution can keep going for at least another 80 years. So would Keynes be proud? I think he would. We have an amazing and loyal audience that is the envy of most other regional theatres; we have a wonderful building, that still needs a lot of work, but is home to a thriving cultural institution right in the heart of our city; actors love to play at the Arts Theatre and our programme is one of the best and most diverse in the country. The Arts Theatre aims to care for every patron as an individual, on a one to one basis. There are parking spaces for customers with disabilities in 4 locations near the Theatre: 4 on Peas Hill; 2 in Wheeler Street; 7 in King’s Parade and 36 in Grand Arcade car park. If you have mobility requirements, please advise the Box Office when booking tickets so we are able to allocate you the correct space. Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building. We have four house wheelchairs available for use during all performances. We have a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system, designed to help DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING patrons both without hearing aids, and for those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are also able to provide headsets and personal induction loops. If you have never used one before, we recommend arriving at the Theatre early so that our Front of House staff can explain how they work. Some of our performances are BSL INTERPRETED. The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. We also programme CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES; words will appear, as they are spoken or whenever a sound is made, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage. For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available. We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children.
