welcome Welcome to our autumn 2012 season. One of the great joys of my job is seeing all of our productions. I am often amazed by the diversity and quality of the shows we are able to offer and how our stage is totally transformed on a weekly basis. Our current season has been unforgettable: Anne Boleyn offering her severed head up for the crowd in the Globe’s incredible production; Giovanni holding his sister’s bloodied heart in Cheek by Jowl’s amazing ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore and enraptured children passing model sailing boats out over the audience in the wonderful Swallows and Amazons, are all memories that will stay with me forever. However, the downside for me is that when I see these outstanding productions I am terrified we will disappoint you all in future seasons. Well, I’m pleased to report that I don’t think we are going to have any such problem this autumn. The season starts with the great Antony Sher giving us an acting master class in Terry Johnson’s Hysteria; Rupert Everett will once again don his period finery as Oscar Wilde in David Hare’s The Judas Kiss; Penelope Keith will be bring her usual mix of pathos and humour in Good Grief and Felicity Kendal will doubtless shine in Ayckbourn’s classic comedy Relatively Speaking. The timeless Ealing comedy The Ladykillers comes to us straight from the West End; The Abbey Theatre, the National Theatre of Ireland, will be bringing us Irish theatre at its very best with the heartbreaking The Plough and the Stars and we are delighted to be welcoming back Cambridge favourites Tom Conti in Rough Justice and Tim West in The Handyman. As Christmas approaches Jack will once again be climbing that beanstalk and you and your family can rely on us to bring you the usual thrills, spills, magic and laughter. The fun starts on 6 December 2012 and runs right through to the 13 January 2013. Please book early for the peak holiday performances as they are sure to sell out very quickly. A family Christmas in Cambridge isn’t complete without an outing to the Arts Theatre panto! I am also delighted to let you all know that the Arts Council are supporting us once again. They will be helping to pay for our fundraising efforts and providing matched funding to stimulate gifts from major donors. It’s a very welcome boost to our Act Two fundraising campaign and we are very grateful for their vote of confidence. Thank you, as ever, for your support and I look forward to seeing you again soon at Cambridge Arts Theatre.

Following the great success of last year’s production of Cinderella, Cambridge Arts Theatre’s traditional pantomime is back! Full of the usual thrills, spills, magic and laughter, this is a giant of an adventure for the whole family to enjoy. The Trott’s are in trouble and Dame Trott needs her two sons, our hero Jack and the ever-so silly Billy, to help her make some money... and fast! Jack does his best and sells his beloved cow, but when he returns home with just some measly beans for payment, his mother is furious and tosses them out in the garden. But these beans are not what they seem and soon an enormous beanstalk mysteriously takes root in the Trott’s garden. It appears Jack’s adventures are only just beginning…

As part of the ‘For One Night Only series’ this season Jenni Murray comes to Cambridge Arts Theatre. Jenni is one of the country’s most-loved and respected broadcasters. Since taking over the helm of BBC radio 4’s Woman’s Hour she has seen the programme grow from strength to strength, consolidating its reputation as a cornerstone of British radio. Throughout the evening Murray will discuss her long career in broadcasting and the incredible 64 year history of Woman’s Hour, talking about her most engaging and terrifying interviewees: from Barbara Castle to Kaffe Fasset, Monica Lewinsky to Tom Hanks and Jack Nicholson, Margaret Thatcher through Blair to Gordon Brown.

CLEO LAINE AND FRIENDS Jazz legend, Cleo Laine comes to Cambridge Arts Theatre for one thrilling night of musical excellence. Her prolific career has seen her play all over the world from English dance halls to London’s Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall to the Blue Note Cafe. She’s been on stage, on Broadway, London’s West End, performed opera and appeared on the BBC.

The wife of the late Sir Johnny Dankworth, she initially met the musician when she auditioned for a place in the Johnny Dankworth Seven, at that time one of Britain’s best jazz groups. Cleo’s records continue to be distributed worldwide. Her 1990 Woman to Woman album merited “five stars out of a possible four” according to the US magazine Jazz Times. The album Jazz reached number five in the US jazz radio play charts, and Nothing Without You, a duet compilation with Mel Tormé, reached the Billboard Top Ten in 1992, remaining in the charts for several months. As part of the For One Night Only series An Evening with Cleo Laine and Friends is a must-see for all lovers of live music, quality jazz and world-class entertainment.

Learning of the king, his father’s death, Hamlet comes home to find his uncle married to his mother and installed on the Danish throne. At night, the ghost of the old king demands that Hamlet avenge his ‘foul and most unnatural murder’. Hamlet encompasses political intrigue and sexual obsession, philosophical reflection and violent action, tragic depth and wild humour. Lasting only two-and-a-half hours on an Elizabethan-style stage, a handful of players will perform Shakespeare’s ‘poem unlimited’, a colossus in the story of the English language and the fullest expression of Shakespeare’s genius. Taking on the role of Hamlet is Michael Benz. He made his Globe debut in 2009 in A New World and As You Like It. Other credits include Trevor Nunn’s productions of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and The Tempest. There will be no seating for this performance, but there will be some limited room for patrons to bring their own chairs. This will be allocated on a first come first served basis and so cannot be guaranteed. There will be limited wheelchair spaces provided. Performances go ahead in all but the most inclement weather conditions so please dress accordingly.

We are looking for a group of 20 talented boys and girls between the ages of 6 — 13 to join the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk as panto babes. We will be holding a full day of open auditions and workshops on Sunday 9 September. The day will be informal and fun, and not only will you have the chance to showcase your dancing and singing skills in front of a panel of judges, you’ll learn some fun dance routines and hopefully make some new friends! ENABLING CHILDREN IN THE REGION TO EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF PANTOMIME Panto Wheels is an initiative created by Cambridge Arts Theatre that invites businesses and individuals to contribute to a coach fund, enabling children to come to the pantomime by offering free or subsidised travel. Schools may apply for funding from this pot and working in conjunction with the theatre, the amount of subsidy will be agreed. Many schools are keen fundraisers themselves, running dress-up days, raffles, cake sales and fun quiz nights for parents. We focus particularly on schools in areas of social and cultural deprivation where affording the cost of the ticket as well as the travel can be prohibitive. In 2011, over 1600 children from 13 different schools enjoyed Cinderella thanks to generous donations from: Birketts, GMT Maritime, John Lewis, The Lady Taverners, David Jones, Granta Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Peters, Elworthy and Moore and TTP.

This story, written in 1996, explores the themes of guilt, retribution, racism and responsibility as seemingly innocent Ukrainian gardener, Romka, is arrested by the police. What has he done? Booking fee All shows carry a £2.50 booking fee in addition to the published prices. The booking fee is essential direct income for the Theatre. Because ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices would not necessarily benefit the Theatre. By adding a booking fee, we can ensure that every penny goes directly to the Theatre to help us protect its growth and longevity. Refunds & exchanges

Discounts
Discounts for customers with disabilities apply to all performances. We also offer discounts on certain performances for students, over 65’s, groups and schools. Please check with the Box Office at the time of booking for available discounts.

We are very excited to announce that we have acquired The Tickell Arms in Whittlesford. The Pub-restaurant has a tremendous history and it is well known in the area. This is largely due to its former owner Kim Tickell who was a mighty character and landlord. He developed the food and the custom to turn it into one of Cambridgeshire’s finest and most destinational of eateries. It is with this legacy that we take on the ownership.
