In Profile MEET MR & MRS HUGHES

Sometimes even the best laid plans catch us out. After Barry Hughes' stroke, he and his wife reimagined their retired life.

After managing his own logistics company, Barry and his wife Anne retired to Phillip Island. Their dream was to relax and fish in a beachside town, and enjoy a well-earned break.

The Gippsland staff caring for Barry and Anne made it easy for the couple to move back to Melbourne and continue Barry’s services with Calvary.

Unfortunately, their retirement lifestyle didn't go to plan, as life sometimes finds.

Now able to communicate and walk slowly, Barry's new passion is golf. He has recently purchased a new scooter to help him get around the course.

Barry had a sudden stroke overnight. He was later advised he would never walk again and would be wheelchair bound. He was paralysed on one side of his body, and also lost his ability to speak. Whilst still in Phillip Island, Barry and Anne began their relationship with Calvary with a Home Care Package (HCP). On the path to rehabilitation, the couple began to look for a change, wanting to be closer to their two sons and grandchildren.

6

Barry’s condition has gradually improved with the care he’s been receiving. “We are very grateful for what we have and lucky Calvary could accommodate,” said Anne. Got extra time on your hands? Want to earn some extra dollars? Why not become an Extra!

STAR is

BORN Extras can be passers-by in the street, patrons in a restaurant, guests in a hotel lift, a crowd at the tennis; and absolutely anyone - including you.

You don’t need previous acting experience and no matter what your look, size, shape or age, with a little investigation it’s not that difficult to find work as an extra in an upcoming theatre show, movie, TV series or commercial. Productions large and small, dramas and comedies, mainstream and fringe, are always searching for a diverse variety of people to give texture to a scene or background, providing actors with a more realistic landscape in which to perform. The best place to start is with a local theatre company. Most of these are amateur groups who don’t offer payment, but provide the perfect introduction to join a vibrant local community ensemble and learn firsthand what goes on behind the scenes. Contact your local council, or simply type the words ‘theatre company’ in the search facility on their website. There’s also a free national online listing called Clubs Of Australia (www.clubsofaustralia. com.au) and click on the ‘Acting’ category. If film and TV are more your thing, there are plenty of options to find work as an extra. Most of these will earn you some additional income, while playing a role in making movie and TV magic happen in a studio or on location.

A number of online agencies provide a link to extra work around the country. With StarNow, (www. starnow.com.au) you can scan and apply for jobs of interest negotiating directly with talent scouts, whilst companies like Talent on a Budget (www.talentonabudget.com.au) will negotiate your fee on your behalf. The aforementioned companies allow you to create a free profile.

Being an extra can be a unique and highly rewarding experience, and is a great way to get active and meet new & interesting people.

If you’re on Facebook, there are also plenty of pages to be found where the industry has put out a call for extras. As extra work is casual and often comes at short notice, the more flexible you are with your time, the easier it is to be available for work as it comes up. If you’re retired, or looking for a new hobby, this could be just the thing to get you up on stage or on the silver screen.

Get Active. Feel Great. KEEP YOUR BONES AND MUSCLES STRONG

We all know how important physical activity is in helping to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle...

There are two particular types of exercise that are important for improving bone strength:

Weight bearing exercises

Progressive resistance training

are done while on your feet so you bear your own weight. These can include brisk walking, jogging, skipping, tennis, dancing, impact aerobics or stair walking.

are exercises that become more challenging over time. For example:Â lifting weights such as hand and ankle weights, or using gym equipment.

Did you know regular exercise is also crucial for strengthening your bones and preventing debilitating conditions like Osteoporosis? You may be surprised to learn that 1.2 million Australians have Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose minerals, such as calcium, more quickly than the body can replace them, leading to a loss of bone thickness. As a result, bones become more porous and less dense, so even a minor bump or fall can result in a fracture or break.

This is why building and maintaining bone strength through regular physical activity and exercise – together, of course, with a good diet and healthy lifestyle - plays such an important role in maintaining or improving bone density to guard against fragile bones as we get older. And it’s never too late to start exercising to protect your bones. Our bones become stronger when a certain amount of impact or extra strain is placed on them (that

self-assessment test called ‘Know Your Bones’ was launched last year by Osteoporosis Australia.

The specific goals of exercising for bone health change throughout life: from building maximum bone strength in childhood and adolescence, to optimising and maintaining muscle and bone strength in young and midadulthood, and reducing bone loss in older age.

“Users get a summary of the results which looks at their risk factors, and people over 50 also get a fracture risk assessment for the next 5 and 10 years.”

Before you start exercising to improve bone health, especially if you have Osteoporosis or have already had a fracture or break, it’s important to consult your doctor or a qualified exercise professional. If you’d like to know more about your bones, a fantastic online

According to Melita Daru from Osteoporosis Australia:

“It’s obviously to be used as a guide. If people find they have several risk factors then we recommend it’s something they should be discussing with their doctor to investigate further.” The assessment is free, takes around 5 minutes to complete and can be accessed by visiting www.knowyourbones.org.au For further information: www.osteoporosis.org.au

Falls are a common cause of fracture. Half of all falls occur around the home and approximately one third of people over 65 fall every year. Preventing falls has become an important part of managing bone health.

Keeping up your balance:

Exercises that assist with balance include standing on one leg, (increasing to standing on one leg with eyes closed), heel-to-toe walking and Tai Chi.

A moment with Marina Prior Marina Prior is Australia’s sweetheart and has graced our screens and the musical stage for more than 33 years. She is regarded as Australia’s leading lady, having performed in highly-acclaimed leading roles in her career. Marina has appeared on television and on stage with the extraordinary Jose Carreras and Richard Harris, starred in musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Cats, Les Miserables, The Sound of Music and recently Hello Dolly, and Hay Fever coming up later in the year. Singing and acting was entrenched from an early age. Both parents were singers with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, where Marina was born. Growing up, Marina was surrounded by music. “My favourite childhood

memories include sitting in my bedroom playing the guitar I first received for my ninth birthday.” From her humble beginnings, and as a university student busking on the streets of Melbourne, Marina’s big break was the stage musical Pirates of Penzance at only 19 years of age. Initially she tried out for the chorus just for the experience of doing an audition and being on stage, but was amazed when she landed the lead role of Mabel. With her natural charisma, and infectious laugh, she says, “I got the role that changed my life. I was in the right place at the right time.” Marina’s career broadened substantially, developing into a versatile performer, who not only has featured in serious dramatic roles, but also the funny songstress in musical theatre. She remains down to earth, keeping her career goals focused and realistic. On the subject of becoming older, she admitted, it was ‘the look.’

Continuing the Mission of the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary

15

“Some of the work I’m getting at the moment is the best I’ve ever had. You get to a certain age where there’s a certain confidence that comes with, ‘I know what I’m doing; I’ve been doing this a long time,’ and the thing I’m most proud of is my ability to evolve and change.” “I got to play the iconic Dolly Levi in Hello Dolly, and you can’t play that role unless you are mature and you’ve got enough character and comedic and musical skill behind you.” Marina confessed she still gets nervous and is forever critical of her performances but finds her cumulative experience quite empowering. In her early fifties, although not looking a day over forty, Marina likes to keep fit by going to the gym, walking her two dogs every day and eating good food. “Exercise is one element but food is paramount. I cook every night, but when we’re doing eight shows a week, I cook in the morning and I leave food for the kids. They’re 20, 17, 16, 15 and 13. I do normal mum things like everyone else.”

What’s evident is Marina’s very obvious love and pride for her family. Recently Marina starred in Hello Dolly with husband Grant Piro. Marina laughed and admitted it was a challenge, but a fantastic one. The values she holds close are family, friends, positivity and inclusion. “I’m extremely happy where I am. I’m grateful that I’m healthy and I’m incredibly grateful to do what I do for a living. There isn’t one night or day where I’m not not thinking, what I get to do is so wonderful. With an aura of professionalism and maturity, she states, “don’t let other people define who you are – you define who you are. You decide.”

Coming up Marina is starring in Hay Fever, a Noël Coward play in a non-singing part. Marina is playing the lead role of Judith Bliss who is the matriarch of a 1920s English family. “Judith is an incredibly self-centred, narcissistic retiring actress, and she’s impossible and hilarious. I’m really excited about it.”

Life Lessons BEING KIND TO YOURSELF

Exhaustion

You know you desperately need sleep to recuperate, yet it becomes this elusive utopia that you only fantasise about through a haze of enduring lethargy.

18

We’ve all been there at some point in our lives, so tired that the thought of getting out of bed is too much. So exhausted that you pop your keys in the fridge and wonder why they aren’t where you thought you’d put them; so debilitated that the thought of thinking can be overwhelming. Exhaustion can be tough to manage, especially when you have lots of things on your mind and you are mentally and physically drained.

Continuing the Mission of the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary

When you think back to when you’ve felt it most, it often centres on very chaotic and stressful times. Your mind is constantly occupied and your sleep disturbed, turning night time into a battle of restlessness and dread. It literally becomes a dayby-day struggle to just function. Cut the Caffeine Hydrate with water instead

So, how do you combat exhaustion when you’ve got so many things to manage simultaneously? There are a few ways to help combat its impact with many being counter-intuitive to what you think you need at the time: Cut the caffeine – although coffee is often the ‘goto’ drink when people are exhausted, it’s best to avoid it. Try having a glass of water instead to help you stay hydrated.

Mediation & Relaxation Experiment with techniques

top tips Diet & Movement Wholefoods & exercise

Seek Help Respite time is valuable

Meditation and relaxation – studies suggest that between 50-80% of fatigue cases are caused by psychological factors. Night time can be tough as many people fret over their problems. There are many ways to achieve relaxation, so experiment with different ones until you find one that works for you. Diet and movement – when you’re tired often the most comforting thing to do is to crash on the couch with some junk food and watch telly, however this could be making things worse. Instead try to get mobile and eat a variety of vegetables and wholefoods to support your wellbeing and immune system. Seek help – sometimes the simpliest tasks overwhelm you when you're tired. Calvary can help give you back some control. A few domestic tasks like cleaning, ironing or shopping can help give you valuable respite time. Exhaustion is tough, especially when life is throwing curve balls your way, however there are some easy to implement changes that can help support you through some of your toughest times. Be kind to yourself and know that with each day you are doing your best and that’s all that matters. Continuing the Mission of the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary

Health & WellBeing LONELINESS

“I had no idea how lonely I was until I wasn’t lonely anymore.” – Fyn Alexander

Sometimes you can deal with loneliness, and sometimes it may feel a little overwhelming. If loneliness starts to impact on your life you may find you: • withdraw further from the people around you; • feel sad, unhappy or even depressed; • don’t like doing the things you used to like; • find it hard to concentrate; or • start to feel bad about yourself and lose confidence.

What you can do These may take effort initially but will be so worthwhile: • Talk to people. Pick up the phone, email or chat online. Don’t wait for people to contact you. If you don’t know how to use a

26

computer, learn. Join the world online, Calvary can help you with digital support at home. • Follow your bliss. Are there any clubs/groups around you that organise activities you might be interested in? Your local library and council can assist. • Volunteer. You won’t be lonely and you’ll feel good too. Contact a Volunteer Centre in your state. • If you’re an animal lover, get a pet (even if you foster), or volunteer at the zoo, or an animal shelter. • Maintain a healthy active lifestyle. If you are thinking about suicide or experiencing a personal crisis, help is available. No one needs to face their problems alone.
