What is your role at Calvary Church? My role is to direct, administrate, and coordinate the Young Adult Ministries (College Ministry, Merge, and Foundations). These communities gather together to grow spiritually through age-specific teaching, edifying fellowship, and serving. It is my goal to see all of Calvary’s young adults growing in their faith, have a passion for following the Lord at all times, and expressing their faith through Christ-like sacrificial love. When I look at Calvary’s young adults I see our future Elders, Deacons, Sunday School Teachers, and Ministry Leaders – I am so excited to see God continue to grow and develop His people to do great works in His name.

What encourages you most as you minister at Calvary? What encourages me most as I minister at Calvary is that God is clearly present and active here. From our worship service on Sunday mornings to our small group meetings, God’s Spirit is clearly leading, guiding, and influencing the Calvary community. To know that God is present and active in our lives and to see Him working at Calvary to rescue people from sin and transform their lives leaves me in humbled awe. This also overwhelms me with joy and excitement, and encourages me as I minister. I am just so humbled and grateful that God has given me this opportunity to minister here at Calvary!

How has God recently revealed Himself in your community? God has been so active in our community and growing people spiritually! Two of the most influential ways that I have seen God revealing Himself is through people caring for one another in the context of trials and sickness, and in seeing people fully commit their lives to God – whether through simply rejecting the world and standing up for Christ (at work, witnessing to friends and family, etc.), or through obediently following God’s calling to a new vocation or service in ministry. To see people sacrificing their time, goals, dreams, ambitions, and desires to instead submit to following God’s leading has to be one of the most powerful revelations of His presence in people’s lives and our community that I have ever experienced.

How can the Calvary family pray for you and your ministry this month? The month of September is a busy month for our ministry as many new young adults attend Calvary and as we get an influx of new college students to Grand Rapids. Please pray that I might have strength, wisdom and guidance from the Lord as I strive to lead the Young Adult Ministry. Pray also for our staff and leaders How have you experienced as we strive to connect with all of these new life{together}? visitors, welcome them and help them get Every time one of our communities (College connected in our communities. This month, we’re sitting down with Senior Pastor, Jim Samra to discuss his latest book, God Told Me. Calvary Life: Congratulations on your new publication. How long have you been working on it? Jim: It took about a year to do the actual writing, but the whole process was more like two. I fit writing in where I can: during study breaks, on vacations, evenings, and so forth. Calvary Life: Why did you write it? Jim: The questions I get asked most often, over and over, are about hearing from God. People really want to know how to hear from God and know His guidance in the gray areas of life. I hope for this book to be a wonderful resource and encouragement for people who are searching for God’s voice. Calvary Life: How did you get the stories that you tell in the book and on the website? Jim: The book is full of stories from the Bible, history and today. Most of the stories from today come from people connected in some way to Calvary. Of course, all of the stories were approved by the individuals for publication or for the website (GodToldMethebook.com). There is also a form on the website that people can use to submit their own stories. Some of those have begun trickling in and it is exciting to see. I love hearing from people about hearing God’s voice, because it encourages me to keep pursuing his guidance. Calvary Life: What are you hoping people get out of the book? Jim: God loves you and God wants to communicate with you. If you believe he wants to communicate with you then start looking for what I call the “fingerprints” of God. What is God doing in your life to point you toward a decision? Copies of Jim’s new book are available in the Calvary Church Library.

Who Cares? Everyone wants to feel cared for. God made us to reflect His own nature ... and God is love. In His very heart we can see what care is and we want to experience it as we pattern our lives after Him. 2 Corinthians 1:3 describes God as the “Father of compassion and the God of all comfort.” These two aspects of God’s care make a great starting point as we care for one another. Compassion Care starts with a truly compassionate heart, a heart filled with genuine love for others. Jesus exemplifies this in His love for us, and illustrated it in stories like the Good Samaritan (Luke 10). Comfort Moving beyond compassion is comfort, an activity bringing encouragement, exhortation or consolation to a person in need. Whether relieving the suffering of another, or providing what they need to be sustained within it, comfort denotes an active work on another’s behalf. Care means compassion with action! This year, as we continue to consider how we live in community with one another, we especially want to look at the ways we care for each other. Are you actively looking for ways to care for those God has put around you? Are you willing to receive care offered to you by others?

Behind the Scenes Serving at Calvary with Cathy Smith
Where do you currently serve at Calvary?
I am currently serving as the lead coordinator for Calvary’s budget counseling program. Part of my role is to train, assist and encourage the budget counselors, assign persons referred to our program to counselors, coordinate teachers for the “Good Sense” class and assist in issues that arise.

How did you begin serving at Calvary?
My service in this program was started as a budget counselor. I felt God’s calling to find a place to serve at Calvary and just went in and talked to the receptionist. She brought me to the maintenance staff and after discussing several service positions, I explained I really wanted to work with people. In no time I was escorted to the Yellow House and trained to serve as a budget counselor. As I served in this ministry God kept asking a little more of me until He brought me to this time and place in the program. I have to admit though, at times I think weeding the gardens or washing dishes doesn’t sound all bad.
What challenges have you encountered in your ministry?
The first challenge is recruiting new people to serve as budget counselors. Our need for new counselors, especially women counselors, seems to be an ongoing prayer. There always seems to be a greater need than available counselors. The commitment to come alongside of church members in need of budget counseling can be a slow moving process. We dedicate ourselves to uplifting, encouraging and assisting our counselors and those they work with in every way we can. There are many prayers lifted up to God to help change the hearts of people to follow biblical principles in their budgeting.
How has God blessed you through serving?
God has blessed me in countless ways. The faith, joy and commitment to God that is displayed in those going through some extremely difficult times is a testament to me of the powerful way God comes alongside us through all circumstances. The joy in celebrating successes together is so uplifting. The amazing ways God chooses to answer prayer are an affirmation of His hand in all things. I have personally been blessed by the God-fearing love and support of new friends made within this ministry. The whole staff is so supportive and the counselors are a true example of Christ’s love for His church.
How do you experience community at Calvary?
I need to first acknowledge the community I have found in the people that dedicate their time and energy to this program. Their prayers love and support are not just related to the position I fill in this ministry but for me individually in my personal life. To be encouraged and prayed for has been the touch of God’s love being passed on though these people. I was a part of a small community group last summer. This was a very rewarding experience that connected me in a personal way with a diverse group of Calvary members. Although our group decided to disband after the summer we still keep in touch with each other.
SERVE
I am now involved in a women’s Monday Night Bible Study. I was drawn to this group by a deep desire to spend more time in God’s word. Through studying scripture we share just how God has touched our individual lives. We encourage each other, pray for each other and come along side of each other in times of need. It’s a true blessing to be involved in such a community.

How well Do You Know the Special Needs Ministry?
Stories from the Volunteers Who Faithfully Serve in this Ministry
I would like to share with you how God has blessed me over the last ten years. One day in my Bible Study one of the mothers of several special needs children asked us to pray for a place where she could bring her children to church. I felt God was calling me to make this possible. We needed a Sunday School class where these children could not only be cared for, but where they would also hear about Jesus love. We started out with two children, now we have many. As our numbers grew, so did our need for helpers. I consider serving in this ministry to be a privilege and I pray that many of you get to have the same opportunity. You do not need any special training, only a love for children and a desire to serve the Lord. - Joyce Herman After listening to Pastor Samra preach about listening to what God was calling you to do, I knew it was time to listen and answer God calling me to serve in the special needs ministry. After teaching special needs students for 20 years, I was currently teaching in a general education, second grade classroom. Although I was enjoying the new path my career had taken me, I was deeply missing the connection with special needs students. I felt God leading me toward volunteering in the special needs ministry to fill the void I was experiencing. Even though I had lots of experience with special needs children, I didn’t really know what to expect in the church setting. Upon entering the classroom that first Sunday, I knew God led me right where he wanted me to be. It was wonderful to see God working in the lives of these children, their parents and the other volunteers. These children are able to express their love for Jesus in a unique and uninhibited way. They dance, sing, move and shout for joy to the Lord all without worrying about what others think. These “special” children have taught me to love without judging. As I continue to serve in the special needs ministry, I look forward to offering my time to those who in return give joy, gratitude and love. I would encourage those thinking about volunteering to take time to listen to what God is calling you to do. Volunteering in the special needs ministry is a true blessing to all involved. - Gerri Johnson When Leetrice Souza started coming to our Young Adult Merge group, I wasn’t sure how best to make her feel included as she has some special needs. Leetrice showed me quickly that I didn’t need to be a concerned about that. She jumped right into Merge by participating in her small group and sharing her desire to grow in her relationship with Christ. I recently asked Leetrice why she likes coming to Merge. She said that the Merge community accepted her with her special needs and made her feel like family. She also said she really enjoys the different events that she gets to do with the group. Leetrice has taught me a lot and has been such an encouragement. Her innocent and sincere prayer requests have taught me so much about how we are to approach our Heavenly Father. In the middle of busy Sunday mornings, she will often tease me about something. It always sort of surprises me, puts a smile on my face and puts things in perspective. Every member of the body of Christ has a role to play. Leetrice has been such a blessing to the Merge group and especially to me. - Sue Schroeder

From challenge to cheEr

Last summer when registering my children for the Wednesday night programs I was asked to help out in one of the classes. Shortly after I said yes to that, I was approached by the leaders of LUMIN8 to help out as well. My oldest child was four-years-old and prior to this I had never volunteered to help with any children's program. I love my own children very much, but I have never thought about myself as someone who enjoyed working with kids. After talking with the LUMIN8 leaders I found myself out of reasons as to why I shouldn't help. I suddenly found myself going from never volunteering for anything child-related to helping in two programs. When the year started I was not too thrilled about this decision. I knew I had made the commitment and had to stick with it for one year. After the first couple weeks I could not wait for that year to be over. About half way through the year, praying over and over again for God to change my attitude and to show me why He wanted me to help in this area, the change finally started to happen. I found myself looking forward to Wednesday nights and I couldn't wait for the performances and was actually excited about the extra time I would get to spend with the kids. This past year started out as a huge challenge for me. It was something I have never done before and never really thought I would get involved with. It was my first time doing anything with Calvary other than sitting in the service on Sunday morning and due to my husband's work schedule I had to do it alone. God used this year to help me grow so much as a person and as a mom and to actually enjoy the young years I have with my children and the children at Calvary. After my experience last year I can't wait to help out again this fall and I look forward to how God will work in my life even more this year.

Opening your heart to the lonely Volunteer Testimony from Greg and Marilyn Hondorp Neighbors International is a ministry whose mission is to share the love of Jesus Christ, through hospitality and friendship, to international students studying at local colleges and Universities. Each fall, students from around the globe make their way to Grand Rapids, and find themselves alone and unfamiliar in a new city and culture. Neighbors International’s goal is to partner these incoming students with families or individuals from Calvary Church, who can contact them once a week, and arrange a time to get together once a month. Karine, a graduate student from Armenia, was well acquainted with strong feelings of loneliness after her arrival to the Midwest. Karine would even ride a bus to the mall, just so that she could sit amongst the other shoppers and imagine she was not all alone. Struggling to adapt, feeling disconnected and lonesome, she longed for a warm, friendly atmosphere and some guidance and support. Thankfully God provided exactly what Karine needed when she met Greg and Marilyn Hondorp through a banquet hosted by Neighbors International. The Hondorps simply invited Karine over for dinner and coffee, took her to visit Lake Michigan, and asked if she’d like to visit Calvary. As they opened their backyard for s’mores, and celebrated birthdays and special events with her, a dear and unforgettable friendship was built. Families and individuals like Greg and Marilyn, who generously open their homes and lives to international students, participate in spreading the love of Jesus Christ to impact individuals both locally and globally. Short-term missions update
To date, seven adult and intergenerational teams have gone out to work alongside Calvary missionaries located in four countries – Mozambique, Ukraine, Honduras, and Central Asia. Dozens of individuals have been impacted by their experiences – whether first-time participants or veterans – and usually they come home with a changed view of the world and our role as Christ’s ambassadors in it. Below are the reflections of members from two of this year’s short-term teams. From Karen Jenkins (Ukraine) I'm so thankful for the support of friends and family to allow us to go. It's amazing to see God work in and through friends and family to orchestrate the whole process before, during and then the return. I realized that Christ unites our hearts in a common bond of His love. That love was so evident in the interpreters’ patient kindness shown to us. No matter where you go in the world, time for being silly and playing also unites us and brings shared joy. I became very aware that God is at work in the world through each of us and we need to be aware of how we represent Christ every day to the world around us. From Jake Tibbe (India) My experience as part of a Calvary team was amazing; I was highly impressed with the intense and thorough preparations that Calvary requires its short-term mission team members to go through. I believe that prepared me spiritually, mentally, and culturally very well to represent Calvary abroad in Madurai, India. [One way] the trip impacted me was to realize how incredibly blessed I am here in America, and how I MUST use every blessing that God has entrusted to me for His kingdom purposes. Every single day I evaluate what my possessions say about me and what is important to me. I desire to give everything I have, all that I am, for God's purposes. My trip to India with Calvary has definitely sharpened my walk with Christ. I believe I have become a better prayer warrior and a better steward of God's resources. You too can be part of a Calvary short-term mission team. Watch for information regarding 2013 trips in next month’s Calvary Life.

We want you to feel at ease when you enter the building, knowing that the proper precautions have been taken in order to protect your wellbeing while on-site. Over the next few months, you will see articles discussing such procedures to better educate you on how to respond in situations of emergency and distress. To begin this series, we are looking at our Emergency Plans. For several months, our Facilities Director, Ken Meines, and his team have worked to refine and better communicate our emergency procedures. They have talked to other churches and facilities managers, seeking advice on the best systems and plans for a congregation of our size. This fall, you will begin to see color coded Emergency Plans charts in each of the rooms around the church. These charts are designed to help you know what to do in the case of medical, fire, weather and other situations. Church staff and lay leaders are also in the process of being trained on each procedure, and we encourage you to review the plans as you find time and need. For your own safety it is important for you to know that in any situation of distress, our Emergency Response Team is on hand to assist you. Their role is to evaluate and take charge of the situation, applying best practices and skills and if needed making sure professional rescuers are contacted. Help phones are also located around the perimeter of the Sanctuary and every 150 feet in the hallways around the building. Emergency call boxes are located in every classroom and operate much like Help Phones. In the case of an emergency, if you are unable to access a help phone, please use your mobile phone to call 911. We ask that you use wise judgement and contact our Emergency Response Team first when possible.

Elder Candidates
Dan Challa Dan and his wife, Roxanne, have attended Calvary for more than 30 years. They have two married daughters and one grandson. Dan has previously served as both an elder and a deacon. He has served on and chaired several committees. Dan has also been involved in Children’s and Student Minstries, in addition to serving as a mentor with Leadership Development Forum.
Clare DeGraaf Clare and his wife, Susan, have attended Calvary for over 25 years. They have six adult children and 13 grandchildren. Clare has served in the Men’s Ministry, is currently involved with the Student Ministries Advisory Team, the Leadership Development Forum, and the Doctrinal Revision Team. He has also served as an elder three times in the past.
Dick Doyle Dick and his wife, Lorraine, have attended Calvary for 30 years, members for 28 years. They have four daughters, 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He has been privileged to serve several terms as an elder. Dick has also been involved with numerous committees throughout his time at Calvary.
Steve Gronsman Steve and his wife, Cindy, have been attending Calvary for 24 years. They met here and now have two children. Steve is formerly a deacon and now serves as a member of the Strategic Initiatives team. He also volunteers with Forgotten Man Ministries. Their family regularly hosts missionaries and has been involved with short-term work in Central Asia.
Doug Lipinski Doug and his wife, Judi, have been attending Calvary since 1984 and became members shortly thereafter. They have two grown children. Doug has previously served three terms as a deacon. Currently he is on the Operations Committee and the Benevolent Assessment Team. Doug was also blessed to serve on a short-term mission trip to Central Asia this past fall.
Dave McGinnis Dave and his wife, Patty, have been members of Calvary for over 30 years. He has been on the board three times prior and currently serves as a mentor on the New City Church board. Dave also serves as a mentor for the Connect class and has been a part of several committees over the years. He and Patty have three children and seven grandchildren.
Dave Oviatt Dave and his wife, Susie, have been a part of the Calvary family since 1982. They have two sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. He and his wife attend the Baby Boomers and Beyond class while also participating in a number of other Calvary Bible Studies over the years. In 2006, Dave and Susie retired and began serving on short-term medical mission trips.
Ross Pettinga Ross and his wife, Jonell, have been attending Calvary since 2000 and members since 2001. They have four sons, a daughter-in-law and a grandson. Ross has served as a deacon, treasurer and member of several committees. Together he and his wife have served in Children’s and High School Ministries. They are currently serving in Nursery and leading a community group.
Sam Roth Sam and his wife, Evangeline, have attended Calvary for over 25 years and been members for nearly that many years. They have four children and ten grandchildren. For the past five years, Sam and Evangeline have served as facilitators for a small group Bible Study in their home. They have also taught Sunday School classes on marriage and family relationships.
Brian Swanton Brian and his wife, Nancy, have attended Calvary since 1985 and became members several years thereafter. They have two children. Over the years Brian has been involved in the FLOCK and Family Tree classes as well as Children’s Ministry programming. Brian and Nancy have also served on shortterm mission trips.

Deacon Candidates
Stephen Baab Stephen has attended Calvary for 24 years and been a member for five years. He has participated in the Leadership Development Forum, led a young adult community group, and traveled to Central Asia for a short-term trip. Stephen has been a leader in the College Ministry for the past few years where he oversees the Worship Band, teaches periodically and mentors students.
Steve Bagley Steve and his wife, Ann, have attended Calvary since 1997 and have four children. For the past several years, he has been involved in the Children’s Ministry on Wednesday nights. Steve has also had the privilege of working in the Legacy Builders class and participating in the Leadership Development Forum.
Darren Herweyer Darren grew up at Calvary and even met his wife, Jill, here. They have three children. Darren has been involved in the Leadership Development Forum, short-term missions, a small group and as leadership for the Connect class.
Don Dykstra Don and his wife, Darlene, have been members of Calvary for over 20 years. They are involved in the Baby Boomers and Beyond class. Don also serves on the Parking Lot Team and as a facilitator for Bible Study groups. He and Darlene have three children and three grandchildren.
Wilhelm Kliewer Wilhelm and his wife, Maria, along with their four children have been attending Calvary since 1998 and have been members since 2007. Over the years, Wilhelm has served on the worship team and the Family Matters class leadership. He has also participated in the Leadership Development Forum and short-term missions. Wilhelm serves on the small group committee presently.
The Nomination Process Several months prior to the annual congregational meeting, the Elders appoint a nominating committee. The committee requests from the congregation at large, the pastoral staff and the current Elders and Deacons, names of potential candidates for the office of Elder or Deacon. (For a specific list of the qualififcations of an Elder or Deacon see page six in the Calvary Church Constitution, available at calvarygr.org.)
Rob Umstead Rob and his wife, Linda, are longtime attendees of Calvary. They have four grown children. Most recently, Rob and Linda have been involved in the Sunday morning prayer room.
Chris Walkup Chris has worshipped at Calvary for over 20 years. While here he has served in various ministries as a teacher, leader and worker. Chris and his wife, Michele, have three children.
Once the process of gathering potential candidates has ended, the Nominating Committee prays over and reviews the names submitted over a process of several weeks. They then submit the names of qualifying candidates to the Elders, who also spend time praying over the list. Once they are in agreement as to the candidates that should be on this year’s slate of nominees, each candidate is contacted to see if they are willing to be considered. The slate of nominees is printed in the church bulletin prior to the meeting, and attendees are asked to contact any elder should they have serious objections to a nominee. At the annual meeting, the congregation is asked to approve each candidate by secret ballot. Once the ballots have been cast and tabulated, the Clerk and at least one Elder places stones corresponding to each approved nominee in two containers (one for Elder and one for Deacon candidates) that allow for suitable randomization. A congregational member selected by the Chairman will draw out of each container the number of stones corresponding to the number of open positions. The people whose names correspond to the stones chosen will become the newly selected Elders and Deacons.

Choir (Chapel): Scripture set to music is the focus of this group of Go-Getters. It is a way for those who cannot read to hide the word of God in their hearts. The focus is not on singing ability. Sign Language (Room 211): The sign language class is open to the larger community of the church. There, students are taught basic communication and the use of signs to praise during worship.

The Main Event Sunday Mornings | 9:00am 5th/6th: Room 109 | 7th/8th: Room 108 Growing up, I had one of those Bibles where some of the writing was in red ink. Those cool red letters that many of our Bibles have are the words of Jesus. This school year we are going to dig deep on Sunday morning in to those red letters and discover how the words of Jesus fit in to our everyday lives. Starting with the beginning of Jesus’ ministry and continuing right until the end, you won’t want to miss a Sunday as we discover who Jesus is, the difference He can make in our lives, and why those little red letters should be a big part of our lives. This fall, we will study the book of Jeremiah. Think this doesn’t sound applicable to life today? Think again. The days in which Jeremiah lived mirror our own, thus the title of the study is Jeremiah, Meet the 21st Century! The study is written by Nancy Samra and you will be amazed at how relevant the truths and warnings in this book are for us today. The evening begins at 7:00pm with men and women each meeting in small groups for about an hour, then for the last half hour, we all meet together in the Chapel until about 8:35. Our teacher, Ed Kaleefey, shares with us additional insights from the lesson for that week. A $5 suggested donation per semester is appreciated to cover materials. Nehemiah Prayer Team When Nehemiah heard that the walls of Jerusalem needed repair, his first response was to fast and pray for four months. For the past two years, the elders and deacons have been praying and fasting for God’s wisdom concerning our space needs. Now we would like to invite our church family to join us. WOW Go-Getters (Adults with Special Needs) Wednesdays | 6:30pm | Chapel Go-Getters for Jesus are a large community of youth and adults with special needs who are eager to serve God and one another. Classes for Adults with Special Needs Wednesdays, Beginning September 12 Art Class (Room 114): Artistic skill development, in a socially friendly environment, is a regular part of Wednesday evening (during the school year) for any Go-Getter student who would like to attend. Choir (215): Scripture set to music is the focus of this group of Go-Getters. It is a way for those who cannot read to hide the word of God in their hearts. The focus is not on singing ability. Sign Language (Room 211): The sign language class is open to the larger community of the church. There, students are taught basic communication and the use of signs to praise during worship.
