It’s that time again! Children turning one by September 1, 2011, through children entering fourth grade need to be re-registered for the 2011-2012 Sunday School year. Reregistration helps keep our database current, places your child with a teacher for the fall, and ensures that your child will have a nametag on September 11 – Kickoff Sunday. Pre-printed registration forms are available at the check-in desks. Please verify the information on your family’s form, and place it in the basket.

From the separation of church and state to the civil rights movement, from the heroism of our founding fathers, to the building of our nation’s monuments, this series will be of interest to every American.

board highlights SPRING 2011
New Organizational Structure The Elders and Deacons began meeting in December 2010 under the organization structure approved at the October 24, 2010 special meeting. The Elders meet together twice monthly. The first Tuesday of each month is primarily a study session which gives us an extended period of time for prayer, devotions, and discussion of a major issue facing the Church. Our devotions have been guided by John Dickson’s book, The Best Kept Secret of Christian Mission and Pastor Samra’s book, The Gift of Church. We have had extended time to talk about our priorities as well as study how we might become more effective as a church body. We have found this time extremely beneficial in meeting our shepherding obligations as well as personally rewarding. The Elders meeting on the second Tuesday of the month is the business meeting for the month. The Deacon officers join us for prayer and have an opportunity to discuss any items that they feel will be of particular concern to the Elders. The Deacons hold their business meeting on the first Tuesday of the month. Four times per year the Elders and Deacons meet together to pray and discuss intersecting areas of interest. Both the Elders and Deacons are extremely positive about the new structure and the time it gives each group to address issues and opportunities in greater detail.
Community, Care and Maturation The elders have been reviewing the systems we have in place to meet the needs of our church family. Acts 2:42-47 gives us the framework for five key components of what a New Testament church should be:
gladness and sincerity of heart… Worshiping - (vs. 46a, 47a) And day by day continuing with one mind in the temple…praising God, and having favor with all the people. Witnessing - (vs. 47b) And the Lord was adding to their numbers day by day those who were being saved. Last fall, we formed three teams to study the critical areas of community, care and maturation. These teams have met several times with the guidance of a consultant to understand the current gaps we have in these areas and develop action steps. Community - Calvary is a big place, and some have difficulty knowing how to connect. The committee responded to this challenge by starting with the mission statement, "To create a culture in which each person at Calvary Church experiences community, demonstrated by accountability in: meeting together; praying together; growing together in the word of God, and caring for one another. The goal is deep relational connectivity." Authentic community helps fight against our fragmented society and gives people opportunity to care for one another. The team has developed several strategies that we plan to implement in the coming months to encourage everyone in our church family to get involved in a community group. If you are not yet a member of a community group, we encourage you to get involved. You'll be glad you did. Care - One of the challenges of a larger congregation is adequately caring for the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of our members. At Calvary, pastoral care is directed through the Yellow House. As our community groups become stronger, we plan to train Care Coordinators and Care Facilitators who will work with our community groups to provide personal care within their groups. board highlights continued Maturation - Our desire is for every member of our Calvary family to mature in their Christian faith. We define maturity as being "like Christ and becoming more like Christ." Being like Christ involves: a) loving God and others, b) obeying God and His word, c) witnessing evidence of God's power, d) exhibiting joy in Christ, e) continuing to grow. Becoming like Christ includes: a) receiving and living out wisdom, b) identifying with Christ, c) suffering, d) imitating godly examples, e) experiencing God's power in our lives, f) participating in community. Calvary currently offers five classes to help people grow spiritually. Calvary Church has traditionally been a program-driven church. Programs are good, but we recognize that they have limitations. We believe that we can better meet the needs of our congregation through community groups. Over the next few months, we will be encouraging everyone to join a small group where we can live out the “one another” commands of Scripture and develop authentic community.

Prayer for the Sick

He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” Clare DeGraaf has led the Elders’ ministry of prayer for the sick for several years. Those who would like the elders to pray for them are welcome to call Ruth Gudbrandson at the church office (ext. 5013) to schedule an appointment. The elders can pray with you at church on Sunday, or any other time throughout the week that may be more convenient for you. Elders can also visit you in your home or hospital room. One of the blessings of the new elder/deacon organizational structure is that we have more time to pray corporately for the church and individual needs. Several from our church family have come to receive prayer for healing and to be anointed with oil. Please join us in the Visitors’ Center next to the Chapel at 6:15pm on the first Tuesday of each month.
New Members We believe that membership means commitment, and we want to encourage those who have not yet become members to make Calvary Church their permanent church home. We praise God that 51 new members have joined Calvary Church since January. One of the distinctive features of West Michigan is its never ending drearily gray winters. And about the time you've given up all hope, May comes and the blossoming trees and colorful flowers remind us of the promising summer to come. With brilliant five AM sunrises and days filled with summer festivals, berry picking, outdoor lunches, strolls through parks, ice-cream treats, sandy beaches, campfires, hiking, boating, a myriad of other activities and colorful sunsets that hang low in the sky well past ten, Michigan is blessed with seemingly endless summer days. In Merge this summer, we want to embrace these endless summer days in a thoughtful and intentional way. Therefore, we are going to be learning about and practicing spiritual disciplines. This means we’ll be intentionally creating space in our lives for God and for one another.
Merge is a community for young adults, 22-34, meeting during the last service in room 137.
Join us on Sundays as we explore God’s Word and spend time sitting at His feet and communing with our Heavenly Father. We’ll also have a variety of events and activities where you can see the beauty of God’s creation and fellowship with others. So, before you over plan your summer, take a moment to pause and create some space to spend with God, resting in the peace of His presence.
UNITED - High School Ministry We are changing the meeting time for UNITED over the summer months.
June – United will meet Sunday mornings, during the 2nd hour at 9:40am. July & August – United will meet Sunday mornings, during the 1st hour at 9:00am. UNITED//AM If you’re in high school, then join us for UNITED all summer long on Sunday mornings. We meet in Room 108 for worship through God’s Word and singing. We’ll be playing some wacky games all summer, all focused on our summer events’ theme “I Heart Bacon.” We’ll also be going through two mini-series over the summer: The Social Network and iPod Theology. 2 Corinthians 9:8-11 When we hold back the resources God has given us, we limit how God can use us to advance his kingdom.
by Ron Haas, Elder “Unlimited” is a great concept. Who doesn’t like talking, texting, and surfing as much as your heart desires. The Chinese buffet just wouldn’t be the same, if you could only have one crab ragoon. And who hasn’t dreamed of driving on the Autobahn with your foot stomped to the floorboard. But the truth is, limits are important. Non-stop texting could lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. Too many trips back to the sushi bar could wreck your diet, and unchecked speed could result in a tragic accident. Limits are good -- except when it comes to giving. When we hold back the resources God has given us, we limit how God can use us to advance his kingdom. Paul gives us four compelling reasons to push our giving to the max. Unlimited Grace Enables us to Give Without Limits Generous givers must overcome a major mental block, “What if I need my money for an emergency?” Money gives us a false sense of security. “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God” (1 Timothy 6:17). Paul reminds the Corinthians that because God has no limits to his grace, we can give with confidence that his grace will be sufficient to meet our every need. “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8). Unlimited Grace Lasts For Eternity, So Do Our Gifts We can give only because God has given to us in the first place. In a sense, our generosity is simply “re-gifting,” because we are passing along what we have received. Paul quotes Psalm 112:9, “He has
scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” You might think that this verse refers to God’s righteousness, but it actually refers to the righteousness of those who have received God’s gifts and are generous. Our gifts for the cause of Christ make an eternal impact as we lay up treasures in heaven. Unlimited Seed Produces A Bumper Crop of Righteousness Some limit their generosity by giving only from the interest they earn, but not touching their principal. Conventional wisdom tells us that if we tap into the seed, there won’t be a future harvest. Paul addresses this fear with this thought, “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness” (2 Corinthians 9:10). If we are generous, God promises to give us our daily bread plus more seed. The more seed he gives us, the more we can give, and the greater the harvest. It’s an amazing cycle. Unlimited Grace Sees Unlimited Opportunities “You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion” (2 Corinthians 9:11). God is not promising to make every generous giver a millionaire, but he is saying that if your heart is generous, he will bring you opportunities to give, and give you the ability to respond. Generous givers give every chance they get. What’s holding you back from being generous? Why don’t you test God and see how these generous giving promises will apply to you. Neighbors International Neighbors International seeks to show Christ’s love by offering hospitality and friendship to international students studying at local universities. As we build friendship and trust, we open the door to share the gospel of Jesus of Christ.
God is calling us to expand our ministry and to do so, we need you! Please prayerfully consider if God is leading you to use your giftings to minister to students in the following ways: Bible Study Leaders – For many international students, being in America provides them the opportunity to study the Bible for the first time! We would like to be able to offer them this amazing opportunity. We will provide materials needed for leading a Bible Study with international students. Bible study leaders will work in pairs and need to commit to weekly sessions. Homes for Bible Studies – Do you live near GVSU or Davenport? We need homes where the weekly Bible Studies can be held. Events Coordinator – In order to help facilitate relationship building between the international students and the American volunteers, we would like to host monthly activities. The events coordinator would work with Neighbors International Committee Members to plan these events and see to all the details involved. Due to the nature of working with internationals, we need an individual who can plan an event for 20, but also be flexible enough to adapt when just two show up! Van Drivers – As the number of students we reach increases, we need individuals who are willing and able to drive the church vans. The van drivers must go through Calvary’s approval process in order to drive the van. Van drivers will be needed on a monthly basis. Even though summer is vacation time, the children’s ministry still runs fUll programs both hours. Quite a number of our caregivers, check in volunteers and teachers take vacations. Opportunities for Prayer Prayer & Fasting for the Unemployed Please join us every third Thursday for a time of prayer and fasting for the unemployed. We will meet during the lunch hour, 12:00-1:00pm, in the Chapel.
Prayer Group for Prodigals Almost all of us know someone who accepted the Lord somewhere in the past and now that person has slipped away from God and is living for self. It seems the closer you are to that person, the harder the heartbreak is for you. You desperately want them to turn back to the Lord. Maybe you were a prodigal yourself at one time; if so, you know even more the importance of turning those straying hearts to God. This new prayer group will unite our hearts as one to pray our loved ones back to the Savior. Please join us on the first Sunday of every month at 8:10am in Room 207.
Festival of Lights We need your help to make this year’s Festival of Lights work. Now is the “prep work” time - 120,000 lights need to be tested and counted. No special skills are necessary, just the ability to plug in a string of lights and see if it works. Why short-term missions?
This year Calvary Church will send out a total of twelve teams to serve in Grand Rapids and throughout the world. Participation in short-term missions is encouraged beginning with our middle school students because: - It is Biblical – most of the apostle Paul’s journeys into cities were short term in nature; - It provides bridges for missionaries to share the gospel through building better and stronger relationships with nationals; - It is a blessing to those we work with by sending well-trained teams; it blesses those who participate; and it blesses us as a congregation when we hear the stories of how God continues to work throughout the nations. From the 5th-6th grade three-day missions trip right here in Grand Rapids to the adult trips around the world, the vision of Calvary’s short-term mission trips is evident: To see our friends, family, neighbors, the least reached, least evangelized, poor, oppressed, and displaced people of our world bring glory to God by becoming transformed followers of Jesus Christ. To fulfill our vision, our efforts and resources are intentional and focused in the following key regions: - The least reached in Central Asia - The least evangelized in Eastern Europe - The poor and oppressed in Mozambique, and other strategic areas in the world and the United States - The poor, oppressed and displaced in Grand Rapids Two teams have already gone out this year, one to India, and the first of three trips to Mozambique. inspire King's Table Ministries
An outreach ministry to special needs individuals and their families
As you may be aware, Calvary Church is celebrating 25 years of ministry effort to the Special Needs community. What you may not be aware of is the development of a para church organization called King’s Table Ministries which was formed during this time. Back in the early 2000s, David and Sally Gallagher worked within the Special Needs ministry of Calvary Church with a passion for people with special needs. Each of them had a close relative who was developmentallydisabled. It was at this time that God led them in an outreach effort to begin the Praise and Worship service times which brought together special needs people from around the Grand Rapids area.

God blessed these Saturday gatherings and before too long, as many as 300 people, including the families and caregivers, were meeting at Calvary Church each month. David and Sally’s passion for the Special Needs community was based in their love for Christ and the need to share this love with the wider community around us impacted with Special Needs. This outreach opportunity to the families of the Praise and Worship attendees was the basis upon which King's Table Ministries was born. From this foundation, they began an outreach effort developing a relationship with Lincoln School. Sally led volunteers in making bibs

for the students. Then it was a mitten and hat collection effort to provide Christmas gifts for the students. From there, families were adopted by other families to share the joy of Christmas. Teacher Appreciation luncheons were given. School supplies were furnished to the students. On and on it went, as over the years Kings Table Ministries impacted families right where they live! This year KTM has plans to start a landscaping project at Lincoln School. All of this stems from a passion to bring Jesus to our community of Special Needs families by building relationships where the families live. KTM works in the community with Lincoln School, the parents, the students, and the teachers creating a strong model that can be duplicated in other public school systems. In the public school system, through church involvement with special services and program development, establishing neighborhood Bible Studies for adults with special needs, creating a traveling dance team called Worship in Motion, and starting an adult group home on Christian principles, God is working through King’s Table Ministries. If you would like to be part of this exciting ministry of outreach, an outgrowth of Calvary’s Special Needs Ministry, and show Christ's love to our Special Needs community, please contact Sally Gallagher (sallyktm@gmail.com).
Each segment of Special Needs Ministry will not meet May 29 (Memorial weekend), or July 3 (Fourth of July weekend) or on September 4 (Labor Day weekend). All three segments of Special Needs Ministry will be meeting during the second service only, at 10:45am, from July 10 through August 28. Special Treasures: Room 114 Under the direction of Judi Warner and Jenny Davis, the class will be exploring various “centers” which will have activities related to the specific topic being taught that week. Seekers: Room 112 The Seekers recently began a study of the Psalms. Students are mostly taught one-on-one along with some group activities. Sarah Westveer continues to lead this group with the assistance of Lori Overbeek and many faithful volunteers. Go-Getters: Room 112 until July 10, then moving to the Chapel. Prayer has been the topic of study most recently in Go-Getters. The students are faithful in their prayers and are learning more about prayer through biblical examples of the power of prayer. Student participation remains a strong focus in this class. The Saturday night service began in 1988, as a creation of Ed Dobson (Calvary’s Pastor Emeritus) and Phil Brower (former Worship Pastor). The service was oriented to reach out to those who didn’t know or were seeking to know Christ. Services included drama, question and answer times, testimonies and contemporary music. Along with casual dress, these elements were all key components in creating a come as you are atmosphere. The Saturday night service was always designed to be a place where those who didn’t feel welcome in the church could find a place to belong. Over the years such pastors as Ed Dobson, Rob Bell, Marvin Williams, Michael Hidalgo and Josh Mateer have preached God’s word in this worship service. It also provided a ministry opportunity for Calvary’s pastoral residents. The Saturday Night Service is a great place to explore faith and spirituality. Life can be crazy and busy, but our hope and prayer has always been that the service provides a place of sanctuary and refuge for the community. In this place many have come to know Jesus Christ and trust Him with their lives. The ministry of Saturday Nights serves as a stepping stone into the larger body of Calvary Church and has truly been a blessing over the past 23 years. On June 4, the Saturday night service will begin meeting at Take Hold Church (222 S Division) in downtown Grand Rapids. Two years ago, Take Hold began by inviting Christians of like mind and heart to gather in the name of Jesus Christ. Once this small community was established they sought ways to reach the lost, make disciples, baptize believers, teach Scripture, and minister as a local community of faith. Currently, Take Hold is a church of redeemed people made up of the outcast, downcast, punk, drunk, freak, geek, sinner, saint, un-churched, de-churched, churched, homeless, homeblessed, rich, poor, suburbanite, urbanite, searcher, seeker, tax collector, prostitute, and fisherman (basically anyone). They aspire to create a safe space of refuge, sanctuary, and love for people to comfortably explore real faith and spirituality. The community of Saturday nights will join with Take Hold in this new space; the location will change but the focus of the service will remain the same. As we look back, we are incredibly grateful for all the lives that God has changed through the ministry of Saturday nights. We are excited about the new direction God is taking this service and trust that many will continue to find a refuge and a place of sanctuary at Take Hold.

An Addition to the Family
We are excited to tell our Calvary family about a transition and an addition to our staff family. Lorie Dewey has accepted a new position on Calvary’s pastoral staff. She will now oversee Marriage and Family Ministry. Susan Sorensen has stepped into Lorie’s former role, joining the pastoral staff to oversee the Women’s Ministry on a part-time basis. We are excited about these changes and how God will work through Lorie and Susan to bless our congregation. We hope you enjoy this opportunity to get to know Susan better.
Q: Can you explain what your role as Pastoral Staff Representative for Women’s Ministry involves? A: My life verse is one I have brought right into this position. Colossians 1:28 says “We proclaim Christ, admonishing and

teaching everyone with all wisdom in order to present everyone perfect in Christ.” That is my heart for the women of Calvary Church, to provide opportunities for women to grow and seek God in a deeper way. I work with a wonderful team of women, the Women’s Advisory Committee, who share this mission. Together we seek God’s direction for women’s ministry. Our goal this year is to bring women together, to build community and to develop our leaders.

Q: What does a day in your life look like? A: I’m still figuring that out! When I started the end of April we were wrapping up this year’s women’s Bible Studies and MOPs but also continuing the training of leaders for next year. This summer will be spent preparing for the launch of our new Tuesday morning Bible Study format called The Gathering Place. (Be sure to look for more information about this

have thought or imagined. At age 41 I went through Breast Cancer….and God continued to teach me of His grace and care of me. Because of this cancer journey I had the opportunity to co-author a 90-day devotional titled Praying Through Cancer (Thomas Nelson) which is now also featured in the new Women’s Devotional Bible, Pink edition.

I quipped, “An hour in prayer!....just what are we going to pray about for a whole hour?!” I am so grateful he persisted. We did pray and God showed up in a powerful way those two summers. Later, the Lord used Vonette Bright (Bill Bright’s wife) when I worked with her on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ. More recently, I have grown tremendously as I have had the privilege of being mentored by Helen Stewart and for four years taught with her the Monday night and Tuesday morning Celebration Bible studies. grow. One of the earliest was when I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer at age 19. He took me to Judges 6-7 and the story of Gideon. Through Gideon I learned to stop asking “Why, Lord?” and begin asking “How, Lord?...How are You going to work in this situation? How are You going to show Yourself strong?” So many times I have not known how He was going to work so it has been exciting to watch Him do far more than I could
