Sorrow and Blood is the latest release from the Mission Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance. At first appearance it may look as if it is a 21st Century reading of Foxes Book of Martyrs, but nothing could be further from reality. This exhaustive work is the best compilation of global authors, many speaking from personal experience about the issue of persecution of believers. The book does a thorough job of covering a theology of suffering. It provides questions at the end of each chapter to help guide the reader to a more personal understanding of living as a disciple of Jesus and advocating for our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ around the world. These are areas that any Calvary attendee could grow and benefit from.
Beautifully written and deeply convicting, Oswald Chambers gets at the heart of Christian living with his daily devotional book, My Utmost for His Highest. It has been a constant companion and help in my own personal walk with Christ. Chambers has a knack for encouraging, yet challenging others to deepen their faith.

Festival of Lights Special Needs Night 2012
With joy-filled smiles, 700 individuals passed through the doors of Calvary to witness the dress rehearsal of Festival of Lights. From Grand Rapids, to Alto, to Greenville, and even Newaygo, they came in busses, vans and cars. Pews had been removed to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers were labeled with names of their owners, closed captioning lit up the monitors, fingers and hands signed with excitement, cheerful greeters welcomed at every entrance, and enthusiastic volunteers accompanied those attending into the sanctuary. The special needs community of Calvary Church and the greater Grand Rapids area look forward each year to the dress rehearsal of Festival of Lights which is open at no cost, exclusively for them. Seeing God’s love and faithfulness revealed in such a beautiful manner moves them to cheer and clap. At the end of the evening the impact is expressed by awe, gratitude and thoughts of coming back again next year. The special needs ministry staff looks forward to partnering next year with the worship department in celebrating our Savior’s birth through Festival of Lights night for another 700+ individuals with special needs.

I'm happy to say this is my third year to serve as a childcare volunteer for the MOPS International ministry at Calvary Church. I began with the purpose of being of service. Soon, however, I discovered the great blessings I receive by caring for precious little children while their moms have the opportunity for "time-out" to be with other moms in a Christian Ministry. For two and a half hours, twice a month during the school year, I completely forget about "me and mine" while interacting with and enjoying the company of the little children. Also, I love the opportunity to meet and make new friends with the other MOPS volunteers who are a part of our Calvary Church family. A great bonus is that the moms take turns bringing tasty treats for all the workers. And finally, our coordinator, Elaine Meredith, makes all of us feel very much appreciated and is flexible if we have a change of schedule. I highly recommend giving this volunteer opportunity a try. A recent Discovery participant said, “Bonnie’s [Morrill] insight and spiritual sensitivity far exceeded my expectations. I learned more about myself and how I can use my gifts more effectively. And I appreciated how she gently ‘taught’ me in the area of spiritual gifts and how God leads us to use them effectively.” Discovery is a program designed to help you learn about what your spiritual gifts are and how you can use them. You will have the opportunity to meet with a trained staff member to review the Discovery program and guide you through the process. For several years on Wednesday nights, Calvary adults have enjoyed gathering for an evening of teaching and growth. This year, several units are being offered that work together to help Christians build a foundation of knowledge and mature in their faith. Religion is all bunk.” - Thomas Edison Many cultures hold to a series of common sense, consensus beliefs that make Christianity absolutely implausible to them. As a result, many people have very genuine, passionate doubts and questions about why so many around the world adopt Christianity as their belief system. These doubts and questions deserve our respect and attention. One thing that Christians are charged with is helping people think through these issues, with the goal of bringing the questioner closer to Christ. Do you have doubts about the Christian faith? Do people you know and love struggle with what they or you believe? Based on Tim Keller’s The Reason for God, Discussions on Faith and Life will openly address the issues of exclusivity, absolutism, liberalism, hell, injustice, suffering and doubt. The goal will be to help us both understand why we believe what we believe as well as prepare us to effectively communicate the Christian understanding of these topics to others. Short-Term Missions: India
Open Door Vision 2013: India Overflowing with Joy Kajani once summed up her life in one word: “vanthanai” (painful). Kajani was married at age 13. She blindly worshipped her family’s Hindu god and practiced “pain sacrifices,” which included piercing her cheeks and walking on hot coals. Kajani presented sacrifices to the god every week, hoping it would bless her with prosperity. But instead, she says, “Nothing went right.” In a span of just three months, Kajani’s two children – a son, age 16, and a daughter, age 9 – both died. Kajani was crushed. “It’s my fault my children died, “ she thought. Dousing her body in kerosene, she tried to burn herself to death, but her husband stopped her. Hoping for a fresh start, the couple moved to a new village where Kajani enrolled in an Adult Literacy Class through Mission india. When she developed chest pains, the class prayed to Jesus, and Kajani was healed! Finally, Kajani had found a God who answers prayers. During her class, Kajani received Jesus as her Savior. She gave Jesus all her troubles and pain, and she realized she was not guilty for the death of her children. Peace filled her heart for the first time. Kajani led her husband to faith in Christ, too. She says, “God’s Word has been my encouragement. If I couldn’t read, I couldn’t be encouraged.” Before she learned to read, Kajani was unable to travel farther than she could walk because she couldn’t read signs. She felt invisible; embarrassed. Now an Adult Literacy graduate, Kajani travels alone by bus or train to visit relatives. But Kajani says that the most important thing she gained from her Adult Literacy class is Jesus. Kajani has brought more than 20 people to Christ in her village and has started a house church. She’s being trained as a Mission India Church Planter. “God is my source of hope, and telling others about Jesus has given my life new purpose,” she says. What word does Kajani use to describe her life now? “Santhosam” (joy). Mission India’s Adult Literacy program is one of four ministries in India that Calvary Church is partnering with in this year’s Open Door Vision project. Others are Kerala Bible Baptist College, Faith-in-Deeds Children’s Home and Bible World Rehoboth. Right here in Grand Rapids, we are also supporting Urban Transformation Ministries’ Man-Up program. Calvary will collect funds for several months that will be distributed to these organizations. To support these ministries and their work in bringing others to Christ, simply indicate ODV on the memo line of your check or on the giving envelope and place it in the offering plate. 8 | January 2013 | calvarygr.org
January 3-14 our first short-term team for 2013 will be on the ground in India serving alongside our missionaries, Jonathan & Hannah Victor. The team is conducting a medical clinic and plan to see up to 1,000 children from the local schools, as well as adults. The non-medical team members will be teaching a Bible lesson, sharing the gospel, and interacting with kids as they wait to be seen. The team will also finish the climbing wall that was begun by last year’s team. The team asks prayer for: • Safety and health for them and for their families at home while they are gone. • God to provide just the right translators for the medical team. • God to reveal himself to the children as the team presents the gospel to them, and that He will provide wisdom and the right words to share with new Christians. • Wisdom for the medical team as they spend time with each person. • God to unite the team in His love as they worship at church (two Sundays); that the testimonies they share will be an encouragement. Save the dates: Missions Conference: April 20-21 This year’s Missions Conference will offer opportunities to interact with our missionaries, as well as short seminars on many topics related to missions including the impact of short-term missions, caring for missionaries, and becoming a missional family. Activities will be concentrated into the weekend of April 20-21, so mark this weekend on your calendar and plan to join us.
All-Church Serving Day: Saturday, May 4 The following pictures may not be as familiar to you; the home as it was being erected at 426 Adams this past summer, and the finished home awaiting its occupants – the very happy mom and her six children who will take possession of their new house this month. The dedication of the home is January 6, at 1:30pm at the address above. Habitat has extended the invitation to those from Calvary involved in the construction to attend this very moving ceremony.
Just as we see last year’s Glocal Impact Day come to a conclusion with the dedication of the house (see left), we are busy planning for this year’s all-church serving day. Please reserve Saturday, May 4 on your calendar to join us as we again impact our community in Jesus’ name. Plan on serving together as a small group, a Sunday Adult class, or as a family; there will be age-appropriate tasks for children five years old through adults. Be sure to block off May 4 on your 2013 calendar now. More details are to come for both the Missions Conference and the Serving Day, so keep watching for announcements in the bulletin and future editions of the Calvary Life magazine.
Sanctity of Human Life Sunday: January 20 Some people think you can be human, but not a person. They think everyone starts out a “non-person,” as an embryo, and become persons later — unless we’re “defective.” They also believe personhood can be lost as we age, or if we’re damaged through brain injury or disease. God’s Word tells us that all human beings are created in His image (Genesis 1:27), and that harming innocent, weak people is always wrong (Exodus 20:13). Even though we are fallen, weak, and damaged, we are still valuable in our Creator’s eyes – so valuable that He sent his only Son to die for us – every one of us. Each year on Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, we join millions of Christians in holding up in prayer those who are most vulnerable, and we seek tangible ways that we can support them. Join with us in praising God for His creation, and honoring life given in His name.

Neighbors Internati nal Sharing our Homes…Sharing God’s Word By Josie deVries (as told to Pam Depoyan) Often, God moves in wondrous ways...when we least expect it. He whispers into our hearts a nudge that invites, “Come, be part of something beautiful this day...” Such is the story of the evening I met international student Mei* (name changed) last October. Autumn gold lit the trees at the college as I drove to pick up three students to attend the Neighbors International Friendship Banquet. Chatting on the way, we became acquainted, but later it was Mei who connected with me most. I could not have imagined the gift she was about to share, a gift God would unwrap between us. In her gentle voice, she opened her heart to me like treasure. “I’ve just asked Jesus to be my Lord,” she confided. Eyes shining, she told me how she longed to read the Bible, but did not know where to start. A new sister from China! Warm joy enfolded us both as she spoke, her heart in her words. Then I heard the Holy Spirit’s soft whisper... “Will you teach her of my Word?” “I’d love to have you come to dinner, Mei,” I urged, “and study the Bible with me. My husband or I will pick you up...” As thrilled as I, she quickly agreed. Soon, we were sharing dinner as a family each week, learning more about each other, praying and then opening the Word together for two hours. Father, I prayed silently before we began... give me your wisdom as I prepare for this study. For knowing Mei is a philosophy major made me a little apprehensive about tough questions. I needn’t have worried, for the Holy Spirit was already pouring openness for His Truth into her heart. Since Mei knew nothing about the Word, I started at Genesis... unfolding the tender, majestic beauty of God’s love for us from the beginning of time.

Praying together also drew a tender bond between us. It wasn’t long before she truly became part of our family, celebrating holidays and birthdays with us. Her faith blossomed, leading to Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012, when Mei publicly declared Jesus as her Lord and received baptism. Fresh joy radiated in her smile even as we both knew she would soon face the biggest challenge to her conversion – revealing the news to her parents when she returned to China, in June. Faithfully, we studied, prepared and prayed for that moment. I’m so thankful for the way God makes us His ambassadors in sharing His heart, and also for Mei, my new sister. Today, Mei is working for her doctorate degree in philosophy, with Jesus as her dearest friend and savior. Was it only a year ago, she came alone to this country, longing for truth but not sure where to find it? Listen to her sweet words of testimony and you will hear God’s song of joy!
Ways to pray for Neighbors International Mei’s Testimony My name is Mei; I am from the City of Yichang, China and am studying at a local college in the Grand Rapids area. When I was in China, I was a non-religious person. Like many, I thought Christianity was just one of the many religions in this world, and believed it was not different from Buddhism or Islam. I saw religion as a way people viewed the world, and understood there to be no particular reason to favor one religion over another. After arriving at my college, I met a Christian science professor who was very nice to me, and kindly invited me for dinner at her home. I wondered how a scientist like her could believe in a supernatural being, and she explained to me how scientific beliefs and spiritual beliefs are not in conflict. As a scientist, she confines her attention on the natural world. But beyond the physical and mental reality, she says, there is a spiritual reality. The spiritual reality is above and distinct from our mental reality. It is not that we find evidence and mentally believe, instead, there is a spiritual reality that goes beyond our limited understanding. Hearing her viewpoint, I accepted it as very plausible, and the conversation helped me realize that perhaps my mental and intellectual resources are not enough to understand spiritual reality. The same professor introduced me to a Christian fellowship group, and I began to meet new people, and heard many of their testimonies. I soon came to believe that God does in fact exist, that Jesus resurrected from death, that the Father, the Son and the Spirit are three persons in one. The week after I made my decision to be a Christian
was very memorable. I could feel that my world was changing and I was eager to know more about Christians, the Bible and Jesus Himself. Then I attended a Neighbors International dinner, where I met Josie Devries. She gave me a ride to the dinner, and when she knew that I just accepted Jesus Christ as my personal savior, she kindly offered to host a Bible study with me at her home every week. She guided me to read the Bible, starting from the beginning when God created everything, to how he destroyed but kept Noah’s family in the flood. Then we looked at how God carried out his promise with Abraham the father of faith, through the generations until Moses. We also studied God’s Ten Commandments and the Passover. Josie said these are all in preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ who came to bring salvation once and for all. The systematic course helped me understand the most important things for Christians. In addition to the Bible study, Josie hosted me at her family dinner on Thanksgiving, brought me to her parents’ house for dinner on Christmas, gave me presents and showed me the meaning of the holidays to my faith. Knowing Josie has been a fantastic experience for me and I am thankful God is still working in my heart and transforming me.

What responses do you think you would hear if you came to an elder’s meeting and asked each elder this question: “In your experience, what is one of the best things about serving as an elder at Calvary Church?” Though each man approaches the role with the unique set of gifts God has given him, you might be surprised to hear that nearly every answer to your question would be a variation on this theme: One of the best parts of being an elder at Calvary is the Prayer Time! Serving as an elder is a humbling, challenging, sometimes complicated and often joyful experience. But without a doubt, one of the major—and perhaps unexpected—highlights for each of us is the privilege of being able to spend extended time together in prayer. If you have spent much time at all around Calvary Church; if you have scanned a bulletin, flipped through other Calvary Life magazines, checked the website or read an “e-news” email, you are probably well aware that folks who would like to pray with the elders can meet at 6:15PM on the first Tuesday of every month in room 211. But chances are you have not really considered showing up. Perhaps you think that invitation is for somebody else…maybe someone with bigger problems than yours or someone who is “more into that type of thing.”

We understand how it could feel uncomfortable and even a little intimidating to enter a room with fourteen men who want to earnestly seek the Lord’s will on your behalf. But it is worth the risk. The experience can be life changing. We know, because God uses that time to change our lives every month! It has been our privilege to pray over broken bones and broken relationships, over individuals, families, and small groups. We have cried out to God to take away sickness and we have asked him to provide jobs. We have anointed the forehead of a grandmother and joined her in pleading for the Lord to change her adult grandson’s heart, and we have anointed a little girl and asked God to heal her body. We have prayed aloud with boldness and we have sat before the Lord in humble silence. We have shed tears and we have laughed. We have been thrilled to hear how God has chosen to heal some, and we have sought to accept His will when He has chosen otherwise. Our Heavenly Father receives all the glory during that prayer time. We readily acknowledge there is nothing special about us or the anointing oil we use. Our purpose is to obey God’s instructions in James 5:13-16, “Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” Would you like to experience one of the best things about serving as an elder at Calvary? Do you need healing? Whether your needs are physical, mental, spiritual, relational, or some other kind, God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. If He is calling you to join us we would be honored to pray with you at 6:15 on the first Tuesday of the month. As we begin a new year the elders have been asking God to make clear to us His priorities for Calvary Church. Our heart’s desire is that our church would follow the Lord’s will in total submission and obedience. Please join us in asking Him to reveal His perfect will and to grant us the courage and humility to submit to it. We value your prayers seeking wisdom and protection for us and for our families. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will guide our decisions and that we—and every person who attends Calvary Church—will become more like Jesus, with an undivided heart.

Nehemiah Prayer Team When Nehemiah heard that the walls of Jerusalem needed repair, his first response was to fast and pray for four months. For the past two years, the elders and deacons have been praying and fasting for God’s wisdom concerning our space needs. Now we would like to invite our church family to join us. Wednesday Morning Bible Study Wednesdays | 9:30am | Chapel Join us as we study God’s word together. Our winter session starts on January 9. Mike Oatis will be teaching this winter. Refreshments are served from 9:309:50am, and the study begins promptly at 10:00am.
Special needs Adult/Individuals Elleen | efitzgerald@calvarygr.org | ext. 5623 SOS Go-Getters (Adults with Special Needs) Sundays | 11:15am | Chapel WOW Go-Getters (Adults with Special Needs) Wednesdays | 6:30pm | Chapel Go-Getters for Jesus are a large community of youth and adults with special needs who are eager to serve God and one another. Classes for Adults with Special Needs Wednesdays| 6:00pm Art Class (Room 114): Artistic skill development, in a socially friendly environment, is a regular part of Wednesday evening (during the school year) for any Go-Getter student who would like to attend. Choir (215): Scripture set to music is the focus of this group of Go-Getters. It is a way for those who cannot read to hide the word of God in their hearts. The focus is not on singing ability. Sign Language (Room 211): The sign language class is open to the larger community of the church. There, students are taught basic communication and the use of signs to praise during worship.

Come and join women of all ages in the Fellowship Hall for coffee, fellowship and a large group program that includes teaching, skits, worship and testimonies. We then move into small groups for discussion on our study of Moses. An excellent children’s program also teaches the story of Moses. New Eight-Week Tuesday Evening Bible Study Begins January 15 | 6:30-8:00pm We will use the book “Rising to the Call of Leadership” by Kay Arthur, David & BJ Lawson. This study looks at four important leaders who we are hearing about already this year….Eli, Samuel, Saul and David. You’ll explore key leadership principles, including how to make wise decisions under pressure, deal effectively with mistakes, and set a course that others will follow. Women’s Exercise Mondays | 9:30-11:00am | Gym Join us for a variety of aerobics, Zumba©, Tae Bo©, pilates, stretching, weight lifting and games all taught by a Certified Fitness Instructor. Women’s Volleyball Mondays | 6:00-8:00pm | Gym Women over the age of 16 are invited to join us for recreational volleyball on Monday nights. Sundays at Calvary Connection Point
Our Connection Point is a place where you can receive a warm welcome. Whether this is your first time at Calvary or your sixteenth, the Connection Point is your place for information on connecting at Calvary Church. It is located in the Chapel wing of the building, on your right as you exit the Sanctuary, in room 215.
Calvary Café
9:00am-11:00am in the Gym The Calvary Café is designed to give you the opportunity to mingle with other attendees between services. Stop in for a cup of coffee and a donut. From discussing the morning’s sermon to catching up on your community group leader’s recent vacation, the Calvary Café is a great place to gather for conversation.
