Scholarships for Summer Camp Now Available for Children of Single Parents The Roger W. Smith Memorial Trust Fund, which has provided for education, summer camp fees, and other special projects, was established as a gift to Calvary Church. Roger and his wife were directors on Wednesday nights for single parent programs before his illness in 1999. Roger expressed his desire to help single parent families with financial needs they experienced trying to raise a family alone. What is your role at Calvary Church? I have been the Administrative Assistant in the Missions & Outreach office for the past two and a half years; before that I worked in the Children’s Ministry. As the “AA” I provide administrative support for those in the department: Celeste McDonough, Pastor Bruce, and Sharon Kaiser.

If you are interested in learning more about how to care for missionaries, the role of North America in global missions and other topics, these books are available in Calvary’s library. Pick one up today. Serving as Senders is the classic missionary care book, helping churches, families and friends become true partners in the work of missionaries preparing for, ministering on, or returning from the field. This updated 20th anniversary edition adds a lot of valuable suggestions for navigating missions in our inter-connected, global world. In Western Christians in Global Mission: What’s the Role of the North American Church, Paul Borthwick, a recent speaker at one of Calvary’s mission conferences, asks the “elephant in the room” question: Is there an ongoing role for the North American Church in global mission? In his answer, he provides concrete advice to help us avoid creating dependency or appearing paternalistic to national believers. How do missionaries help those who have never heard of Jesus Christ make the connection between God’s Word and the life they know? The Messenger, the Message, and the Community: Three Critical Issues for the Cross-Cultural Church Planter is already a classic among workers on the field! Our small group has been an immense encouragement to us in recent months and we are grateful beyond words to the Lord for the love he shows through them.”
Group Details These groups gather in homes for the purpose of growing spiritually and relationally. You will be asked to commit to meet at least 8 times (most groups meet every other week). You will study God’s word together. You will fellowship together, care for one another and grow in the Lord together. If you are unable to join us on April 28, you can still be part of a group. Just fill out a registration form by April 22 to be placed in a new group. Calvary has emphasized the benefits of being a part of a small group for quite a while now. Terry and I joined a group of four couples a little over a year ago, realizing it was something we needed, but we were a little reluctant. It felt kind of like taking your medicine – you know it’s good for you, but it can be uncomfortable, especially at first. We met twice a month (usually). We studied the Word, prayed together, ate a little, laughed and talked a lot. God started building a bond that would become a lifeline.
Everyone goes through seasons in life where each day is like an endurance contest – it’s all you can do to put one foot in front of the other and hang on desperately, sometimes feebly, to the promises of God. In such a huge place like Calvary, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd, to feel like no one cares when you are going through a really rough time. Our small group has been an immense encouragement to us in recent months and we are grateful beyond words to the Lord for the love he shows through them.

One example of this caring spirit still brings tears to our eyes. Terry’s dad, Warren, had been extremely ill for several months due to complications from open heart surgery. Our small group was a constant source of encouragement and comfort during this exhausting time. Terry’s dad passed away in November and we made the two-hour trip back to Jackson to prepare for the funeral. During the evening visitation at the funeral home, two members of our group, Sam and Carla, walked through the door. We were stunned. They had never met Warren, but made that long drive to support us.

Our little group has been through the wringer in the past year. Not one of us has been untouched by tremendous challenges – aging parents with major health issues and difficult quality of life decisions, job losses and prolonged financial difficulties, older children making questionable choices – the list is long! Our regular meetings became sporadic and our Bible study less focused, but we still met together when we could. We kept texting, calling and emailing each other – just to remind each other that we care, we are praying, God is still good, even when life is hard.

Each Wednesday evening over 25 art enthusiasts gather for a very special time. As you walk into the room, you catch the excitement and many times there is standing room only for this time of learning and praising God through art expressions. The special needs art class is led by Pamela Cook, assisted by Cathy Ezinga, Cheryl Johnson, and other faithful volunteers. We experiment with a variety of mediums from watercolors and pastel chalks to molding with plastics.
This month our spiritual inspiration comes from the theme of sacrifice that the Go Getters are focusing on in the Worship on Wednesday program. Christ’s sacrifice for us is supreme, but we must also be willing to sacrifice what we are for what God intends for us to become. Our latest project expresses that truth…it starts with a plain circle of plastic, and drawing from their creative gifts, the students’ added color and design with permanent markers. The artwork was then exposed to a low heat, where the change happens. Just as when we place our lives into the hands of our Creator, the plastic is transformed into a thing of beauty that we cannot predict or imagine. The Go Getters are learning how God has imparted them with unique gifts of creativity, and that He is delighted when their artistic gifts are being expressed. No one’s project looks the same... exactly as God intended. Grouped together under the lights, their shining attributes are magnified. It is a wonderful thing to be a part of God’s workings here at Calvary Church. We invite you to stop by room 114 to view our “Dale Chihuly” inspired artwork currently being displayed. The Special Needs art class meets Wednesday evenings from 5:45pm to 6:30pm in room 114. All are welcome.
Adult Sunday Class focus: Growing in Remarriage Growing in Remarriage is a caring congregation of remarried couples (death or divorce) building Christ-centered relationships through in-depth Bible study, prayer, friendship and outreach. We also enjoy Friday night gatherings, potlucks, and retreats. We are more than a class which meets to study a subject by lecture. Growing up sitting at my Mother’s knee, I heard stories of Jesus’ love. And when I came to understand, I confessed to God above.

“It is finished” was not a cry of defeat Death could not hold Him; He had won! A day of mourning became full of joy At the victory of Jesus, God’s Son.
But then I noticed all around There were ears that couldn’t hear. How would they know the Way, the Truth? It caused my heart to fear.
So, I cannot be content to ignore So many who cannot hear Of Jesus’ love and saving grace How He wants to draw them near.
Yes, preachers must go to the entire world God’s plan of redemption to show But that’s not enough; we need more than a voice To ensure that all deaf people know.
God made the deaf and without a doubt He wants them in Heaven too! So, please pray seeking His will For what He would lead you to do!
For words are missed in their silent world How can they know of God’s precious Son? The answer is found in humble hands That will tell how their souls can be won! Debbie Mills is new to Calvary Church and is passionate about sharing the Gospel message with those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Debbie is grateful that God gifted her with the ability to learn ASL (American Sign Language) quickly and is now using that gift to share her faith with others who need more than a voice to hear. If you or someone you know is interested in learning American Sign Language (ASL), the Special Needs Ministry will be offering introductory and beginner classes here at Calvary Church. The intro classes will expose you to the deaf culture along with learning some basic ASL. Please contact Judi Warner for more information or to sign up for an introductory class which will be held this spring. The centerpiece of this year’s missions conference Awaken is celebrating that passion and sharing it with other churches. Saturday & Sunday, April 20-21 Our Saturday keynote speaker and Sunday guest preacher is Steve Moore, president of Missio Nexus, an organization dedicated to empowering the Great Commission community of North America. Steve lives to see God’s people discover their individual passion and fulfill the specific call God has given them. His most recent book, Who is My Neighbor? Alf Clark, Executive Director of Urban Family Ministry Alfonso “Alf” Clark has been ministering in diverse settings in Michigan for 13 years. He is enthusiastic about ministering to families, teaching the Word of God, and loving kids. a note from the elders Pastor Samra’s Study Break Please join us in praying for our pastor while he is on his annual study break. Each year Jim Samra spends five weeks away from Calvary Church. He goes with our blessing, because on a typical study break Jim reads dozens of books, meditates on lengthy sections of the Bible, prays for hours, memorizes scripture, writes theological papers on challenging topics such as spiritual warfare or interpreting scripture, and prayerfully maps out the weekly sermon schedule for the coming year. When he returns he is revitalized and excited to share what he has learned. Jim provides the elders with a detailed account of what he has studied and how the Lord has been speaking to him, then we spend time considering that and praying about it together. So we are thrilled to grant Jim this time to seek God’s will for our church! Jim and Lisa and their four children plan to enjoy one week of vacation together and Jim will spend the other four weeks in intensive study and prayer. Pray that the Samras will experience refreshing, uninterrupted family time while on vacation. Pray for Jim’s spiritual protection and for wisdom and distraction-free time while he studies. Please ask the Lord to speak clearly and to map out next fall’s sermon schedule according to His will and purpose. Doctrinal Statement For the past four years the elders and a committee have been reviewing Calvary’s doctrinal statement to make sure it clearly defines what we believe. Drafts have been revised several times. Pilot classes have been taught, leading to further revisions. Our goal is to strengthen our statement. Our existing statement doesn’t adequately address some common theological questions. The current draft form includes two sections, a doctrinal statement called “What We Believe” and a 32-page explanation called “What We Teach.” We hope this combination will clarify, strengthen, and help us teach our beliefs. The doctrinal statement requires approval by a congregational vote before any revisions are officially adopted. The congregation will have time to read, ask questions and give input about it long before the final draft comes up for a vote. In the meantime, please pray for wisdom as we seek to clearly articulate the foundations of our faith. Nominations for Elder and Deacon At our March 12 meeting, the Nominating Committee prayerfully submitted the names of those they recommended for consideration as potential elder and deacon nominees for the coming year. Now we are praying through the list and asking God to highlight the people He has chosen for these roles. We would appreciate your prayers as well. The next step will be to ask those whose names were submitted to pray about whether or not God is calling them to serve in this way. Central Asia Trip This past February, elder Noe Palacios, Pastor Bruce and a team of six from Calvary Church visited our partners in Central Asia to participate in a leadership conference for national workers. More than 360 attended the meeting and 200 were Central Asia passport holders. The team was encouraged to hear these national pastors share how people are coming to Christ and churches are growing in spite of persecution. One of the greatest blessings was to see the nationals take more leadership responsibilities. Calvary has been involved in this region of the world since 1992 and remains firmly committed to helping this unreached area of the world learn the truth of the gospel of Christ. We are grateful to those in our church family who become personally involved in missions. KIDS N ACTION is designed to foster social interaction through chosen electives, while facilitating spiritual growth in learning from the book of James how to “put your faith into action.” James Gang Picture Reminder Remember that on May 8, at 7:50pm, in the Fellowship Hall, we will be taking our group photo of all children who have participated in the “James Gang.” This photo will be on a “Wanted” poster, and will stay in our Elementary hallway for years to come – and each child in it will receive a personalized certificate. Ice cream treats will also be available for everyone! It’s not too late to join! To be in the picture, you must: memorize James chapter 4 and complete 5 serving opportunities. Completing serving projects is as simple as helping children interpret things they do for other people (shovel snow, share a lunch, donate books, etc.) as “putting faith into action” as the book of James describes. Severe Weather Awareness Week The week of April 17 has been designated as our spring severe weather awareness week.
In the case of severe weather, event closings will be announced on Calvary’s website, WCSG (91.3), TV8 and TV13. If a weather watch develops during an event, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) will monitor the situation. From discussing the morning’s sermon to catching up on your community group leader’s recent vacation, the Calvary Café is a great place to gather for conversation.
