Poet Brings ‘New Voice’ from Ghana

Newsboys Concert Tickets On Sale Now
T
ickets are on sale now for a concert by the Christian pop-rock band Newsboys, performing at 7 p.m. April 11 in the Convocation Center. Grammy Award nominees and five-time winners of the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Award, Newsboys have five gold albums to their credit and 28 No. 1 radio hits. Their 2010 album, Born Again, reached No. 4 on the overall Billboard chart. In addition to Newsboys’ top hits, the playlist for the concert at Cal U will include songs from the band’s current album of rock-driven worship anthems, God’s Not Dead, including “Your Love Never Fails,” which has been No. 1 for six weeks in a row at Hot AC radio. Appearing with Newsboys is the Nashville-based singer/songwriter Britt Nicole, a Grammy Award nominee for her 2012 album, Gold. The artist says her danceable, pop-inspired songs “send a potent yet joyful message of self-worth” to her growing cadre of fans. Opening acts are All Things New and the duo Campbell.
“We’ve had country and bluegrass performers at Cal U, along with urban comedians and even a magician,” said Mike Silva, general manager of the Convocation Center. “Christian rock is a popular genre, and one that we expect to do well in this region.” General admission tickets cost $25 in advance, $30 on the day of the show. For $77, guests can enjoy a special Newsboys’ VIP Experience with priority check-in, an exclusive autograph session, a Q&A event with the band and limited edition merchandise. The tour is sponsored by Compassion International, a charity devoted to lifting children out of poverty. elebrating the oral tradition of Africa’s singer-poets, internationally acclaimed poet and educator Kofi Anyidoho will read from his work at 7 p.m. March 14 in Steele Hall Mainstage Theatre. Anyidoho, of Ghana, is a UNESCO resource poet for cultural and linguistic diversity in education. A sought-after international speaker, he is renowned for powerful live performances that address contemporary culture while honoring the spoken-word tradition of his family’s Ewe ethnic group. “He is the new voice of Africa,” said Dr. Mohamed Yamba, dean of the College of Liberal Arts. “Kofi Anyidoho is the first African poet, author and educator to visit Cal U as part of the College of Liberal Arts’ globalization effort.” Before his evening performance, the poet will engage in a full day of educational activities, including class sessions with English majors. Anyidoho has published six collections of poetry and a bilingual children’s play in English and the Ewe language. His Ewe-language recordings include GhanaNya, a dialogue between Anyidoho and the voice of his late mother, who also was an Ewe poet and cantor. He has received numerous awards for his poetry, including the Langston Hughes Prize, the BBC Arts and Africa Poetry Award, the Valco Fund Literary Award and the Fania Kruger Fellowship for Poetry of Social Vision. Among his collections are Elegy for the Revolution, Ancestral Logic and Caribbean Blues, Praise Song for the Land and The Place We Call Home and Other Poems. Some of his books will be available at the reading.
Poet and educator Kofi Anyidoho
Educated in Ghana and the United States, Anyidoho earned a Ph.D. at the University of Texas. Today he is a literature professor at the University of Ghana at Legon, in the capital city of Accra, and the first occupant of the university’s Kwame Nkrumah Chair in African Studies. At the University of Ghana, Anyidoho also has served as head of the English Department, interim director of the School of Performing Arts and director of the African Institute on Humanities of the CODESRIA, the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa. Anyidoho’s appearance at Cal U is sponsored by the President’s Office; the Office of the Provost/Academic Affairs; the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Education and Human Services, and the Eberly College of Science and Technology; the School of Graduate Studies and Research; and the English Department. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.
Athletes’ Total GPA Sets School Record
C
al U’s varsity athletes have scored another stellar academic semester. For the 13th consecutive semester, the varsity athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In fact, 31 student-athletes boasted a perfect 4.0 GPA last fall. Overall, the Vulcans posted a cumulative GPA of 3.187, making last semester’s overall average the highest in school history. “Our student-athletes continue to shine in the classroom,” said Dr. Karen Hjerpe, Cal U’s interim athletic director. “Attaining the highest cumulative GPA in our history shows the commitment of the students to their academic programs — and the hard work of our academic support staff, coaches and faculty is integral to their success.” A total of 209 student-athletes, representing all fall, winter and spring sports, were named to the Fall 2012 edition of the Cal — Continued on page 3

Having students create glogs — digital collections of text, video and sound focused on a defined topic — is one way to encourage critical thinking and reading. The project arose from a series of workshops offered as part of Cal U’s Professional Development Schools Collaborative, in conjunction with the Teaching with Primary Sources program. To increase rigor in reading instruction, participants worked together to create grade-level literacy modules that align with Common Core State Standards, integrate primary sources, utilize a variety of informational texts, and require young students to think critically about what they are reading and viewing. Also involved in the workshops were Linda Muller, a training specialist with the College of Education and Human Services, and Dr. Michael Brna, director of Cal U’s Teaching with Primary Sources program.

‘The Fantasticks’ Set to Make Cal U Debut This Week

s Cal U celebrates Women’s History Month in March, the University marks a milestone with the 10th anniversary of performances of The Vagina Monologues. Eve Ensler’s award-winning play is a series of heartfelt, poignant and sometimes hilarious vignettes celebrating women’s bodies and female sexuality. Since its debut in 1996, it has been performed at hundreds of college campuses across the United States. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. March 13-15 in Steele Hall’s Blaney Theatre. Tickets will be on sale from 10:30 a.m.1:30 p.m. beginning March 6 in the Natali Student Center; from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. MondaysFridays at the Women’s Center in Carter Hall, G45; and at the door. Cost is $5 for students and $10 for non-students. Ten percent of the proceeds support VDay, a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls that is marking its 15th anniversary this year. The rest is donated to local women’s initiatives.

al U’s Department of Theatre and Dance will open its 2013 spring season with The Fantasticks, which first delighted off-Broadway fans in 1960 and eventually became the world’s longest-running musical. With music by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones, the show explores the relationship between parents and children in a beautiful and theatrically simple style. Memorable songs include “Soon It’s Gonna Rain” and “Try To Remember.” This will be the first time The Fantasticks has been performed at Cal U. The cast consists of eight students actors: Jordan Brooks, Christina King, Trevon Kiser, Jason Capello, Zach Thomas, Jason Dohoda, Stephen Reedy and Clayton Rush. Students also contributed to the look of the show: Sam Karas designed the set and Mary Ann O’Farrell the properties. Dr. Michele Pagen is directing the production, with choreography by Diane Buffington and lighting design by William O’Donnell. The music director is Kevin Milliken, a music teacher at Masontown Elementary School. Curtain time for The Fantasticks is 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday with shows at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday. All performances are in the Gerald and Carolyn Blaney Theatre in Steele Hall. Ticket price is $12 for patrons of all ages. Students with valid CalCards are admitted free; a $5 deposit is returned when the student attends the performance. Campus BRIEFS BSU Formal on Saturday The 10th annual Black Student Union formal, “Winter Wonderland,” will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Performance Center, inside the Natali Student Center. The BSU is a student organization committed to cultural diversity at Cal U. It sponsors and participates in educational, cultural and social events on campus. Spring Academic Open House Cal U welcomes students and their families to an Academic Open House from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. The program is designed to introduce prospective students to Cal U and to give students who already have been accepted a chance to explore the campus. Anderson to Head Millersville
Students, faculty and staff can linger a little longer in the library. Closing time at Manderino Library has been moved back one hour. The library now is open from 7:30 a.m.11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. Hours are 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays; weekend hours are noon-8 p.m. The library will be closed for spring break on the weekends of March 16-17 and March 23-24. On weekdays during the break, March 18-22, the library will be open from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Regular hours of operation resume on Monday, March 25. The library will be closed March 31-April 1 for the Easter holiday.
Dr. John M. Anderson, president of Alfred State College in New York since 2008, was selected by the PASSHE Board of Governors to serve as the next president of Millersville University of Pennsylvania. He will assume his duties on April 1. Anderson succeeds Dr. Francine G. McNairy, who retired in January after serving as Millersville’s president for nearly a decade. While at Alfred, Dr. Anderson also served as interim vice president of student services, dean of student development, vice president of institutional advancement, and provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Harlem Globetrotters Appear Thursday

ickets are still available for the Original Harlem Globetrotters’ interactive “You Write the Rules” tour, appearing in the Convocation Center at 7 p.m. Thursday. Families can go online at www.harlemglobetrotters.com to vote for which groundbreaking rule will be incorporated into the game at Cal U. They might ask players to use two basketballs at once, for instance, or double the points for each basket made – what one Globetrotter calls “buy one, get one free.” After every game, players remain on the court for at least 15 minutes to sign autographs and have photographs taken with fans. This year’s Globetrotters roster features stars Special K Daley, Big Easy Lofton, Flight Time Lang and Dizzy Grant, along with the world’s tallest pro basketball player, 7-foot-8inch Tiny Sturgess; the shortest Globetrotter ever, 5-foot-2-inch Too Tall Hall; and female players TNT Maddox, T-Time Brawner and Mighty Mitchell.
Innovators of the game of basketball since 1926, the Globetrotters are embarking on a season-long alliance to promote breast cancer awareness, playing portions of their games with specially designed pink Spalding basketballs to help the cause. Ticket prices range from $25-$55. Fans who purchase the additional $20 “Magic Pass” can spend time on the court with the Globetrotters, one-on-one, shooting baskets, trying out ball tricks, or collecting autographs and photos. Women’s golf, which also won its fourth PSAC title last fall, achieved the highest team GPA at 3.565. Six team members were named to the honor roll. Leading on the men’s side was the cross country team, at 3.479, with nine runners holding a 3.0 GPA or better. Women’s track and field had the greatest number of studentathletes on the honor roll, with 32 players listed. Also well represented was football (31 players), baseball (24), women’s cross country (24) and women’s soccer (20).
enowned jazz musician and author Jamey Aebersold will conduct a jazz improvisation workshop Tuesday during the common hour in Morgan Hall’s Learning Resource Center auditorium. The free workshop is open to the Cal U community and the general public. Aebersold is an internationally known saxophonist and an authority on jazz education and improvisation. He has developed a series of play-along music book and CD sets designed to help musicians develop their improv skills. The Aebersold products allow a musician to practice and improvise with the music of well-known jazz personalities, and the recordings employ some of the best jazz musicians in the world. The “play-along” approach has been responsible for changing the practice habits of thousands of musicians around the world. One of the first to encourage small group classes concentrating on jazz improvisation, Aebersold directs weeklong Summer Jazz Workshops held during the past 40 years in venues across the United States and in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, England, Scotland, Denmark and Canada. In 1989, the International Association of Jazz Educators inducted Aebersold into its Hall of Fame. In 2004 he received the Medal of Honor in Jazz Education from the Jazz Midwest Clinic,

FORUM MEMBER SEATS AVAILABLE ON FORUM COMMITTEES (Appointments are made by the Forum Executive Committee.) The Forum Constitution provides that every standing committee shall include in its membership a member of the Forum. The Executive Committee shall appoint a Forum member to any standing committee that does not already have one.
