Quintet of Mustangs in the NFL When the National Football League’s 30 teams ended the lockout and opened training camps in late July, Cal Poly had five former players on active rosters -- defensive end Chris Gocong with the Cleveland Browns, wide receiver Ramses Barden and cornerback Courtney Brown, both with the New York Giants, linebacker Mark Restelli with the Miami Dolphins and wide receiver Dominique Johnson with the Minnesota Vikings. Linebackers Jordan Beck (Denver Broncos) and Kyle Shotwell were released in 2008 and Brown was let go by the
Dallas Cowboys in 2009 and signed with the Giants in early 2010. Gocong, Beck and Shotwell were Buck Buchanan Award winners at Cal Poly. Restelli signed a futures contract with Miami in January 2011 after two seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League. Johnson signed an undrafted free agent contract with Minnesota two days after the lockout ended. Beck was drafted in the third round in 2005 by Atlanta, Gocong was a third-round choice of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2006 and traded to Cleveland in April 2010, Brown was chosen
by Dallas in the seventh round in 2007, Shotwell signed as a free agent shortly after the 2007 draft with the Oakland Raiders and Barden was a third-round choice of the Giants in 2009. Shotwell was released by the Raiders on Sept. 1, 2007. He played in exhibition games with the Raiders in 2007 and Indianapolis Colts in 2008 and was on the practice squads of the Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs, all in 2008. Beck was cut by the Falcons on Sept. 3, 2007, signed a free-agent contract with Denver on Oct. 17, 2007 and was released midway through the 2008 season.
