Steve

Sampson

Head Coach • Second Year • Stanford, 1981 Collegiate Record: 75-24-24 {Santa Clara, 1986-90 / Cal Poly, 2015-}

teve Sampson, former manager of the United States Men’s National Team and Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy, is in his second year as head coach of the Cal Poly men’s soccer program following an historic 2015 first season in charge of the Mustangs. During his first year on Cal Poly’s touchline in 2015, Sampson directed the Mustangs to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in seven years while the team matched a program record with 11 victories. Individually, Chase Minter was named Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year, Wade Hamilton was selected Big West Goalkeeper of the Year – both for a second straight season – and a program-record eight Mustangs earned All-Big West praise. In January 2016, Minter, Hamilton and defender Kip Colvey were each selected in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft while fellow graduating senior Matt LaGrassa also signed a professional contract. One of the most accomplished coaches in the history of American soccer, Sampson managed the United States at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France and directed LA Galaxy to the 2005 Major League Soccer Cup title. Among other notable assignments during more

S

than three decades of coaching and teaching, Sampson has served as the Costa Rica Men’s National Team manager (2002-04) and as an assistant with the United States Men’s National Team for the 1994 FIFA World Cup after also directing Santa Clara to an undefeated record during its NCAA Division I national championship run. Sampson, who has enjoyed coaching success at every level between junior high school and the international game, arrived at Cal Poly in December 2014 from the Camarillo-based Eagles Soccer Club, where he served as the executive director and technical director overseeing 44 youth teams and nearly two dozen coaches. Sampson also serves as president of Global Sports Institute, which operates the Steve Sampson Soccer Academy and serves as a soccer consulting agency. Fluent in Spanish, Sampson has served as an on-camera analyst for Time Warner Cable Deportes in Southern California and Televisa Deportes Network in Mexico for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, 2012 UEFA European Championship, CONCACAF World Cup qualifying matches and various international friendlies. In June 2016, he joined Fútbol de Primera radio as a color commentator for Copa América Centenario. He remains the only American-born person to have served as a soccer analyst on Mexican television. Named LA Galaxy manager on Aug. 18, 2004, Samp-

son directed the club to that year’s MLS Western Conference finals. A year later, Sampson became just the third manager to guide a club to both the MLS Cup and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the same season. As the Costa Rica Men’s National Team manager (200204), Sampson led the country to the second round of CONCACAF World Cup qualification in 2004 and the 2003 UNCAF Nations Cup championship (a competition for Central American countries). Also serving as technical director for all of the country’s national teams, Sampson helped Costa Rica qualify for the 2004 Olympic Summer Games and the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Finland. With his Costa Rica managerial appointment, Sampson became the first Americanborn coach to manage a national team outside of the United States. From 1999-02, Sampson served as the technical director for California Youth Soccer Association South, overseeing the selection and development of youth players in the largest association in the United States (Cal South features more than 100,00 registered players). During his time with Cal South – which regularly placed players on Olympic Development Program sides and youth national teams – the organization produced seven national championships. Appointed interim manager of the United States Men’s National Team in April 1995, Sampson immediately led the

Americans to a fourth-place finish at the 1995 Copa America, a run that included a 3-0 romp past Argentina. Promoted to the full-time managerial position, Sampson then helped the United States qualify for an unprecedented third successive World Cup Finals appearance with the Americans losing just one match during the qualification process. On the way to the World Cup, the United States topped Brazil 1-0 in the 1998 Gold Cup semifinals, a victory that helped Sampson become the only American manager with victories against both Brazil and Argentina in competitive play. With the United States, Sampson created the “El Equipo para Todos” campaign to promote and help recognize the men’s national team as “Everyone’s Team” in Hispanic communities. Through this endeavor, his managerial positions with the United States and Costa Rica national teams and his continued work on Spanish-language television, Sampson remains one of the more recognizable coaching figures in North, Central and South America. Sampson’s tenure with the United States Men’s National Team began in 1993, when he was named an assistant coach on Bora Milutinovic’s staff in preparation for the 1994 World Cup in America. With Sampson on the bench, the United States reached the knockout phase of the World Cup for the first time since 1930, losing 10 to Brazil in the round of 16. In the buildup to the 1994 World Cup, Sampson served

as the vice president for competition on the organizing committee and as the Chairman of the United States National Team Committee. As head coach at Santa Clara (1986-90), Sampson compiled a 64-19-19 record with the crowning achievement coming during the 1989 season as the Broncos finished 20-0-3 en route to capturing the first and only NCAA Division I title by a men’s program in university history. For his coaching efforts, Sampson was named both NSCAA and ISAA National Coach of the Year and West Coast Conference Coach of the Year. Sampson, who enjoyed four winning seasons in five years at Santa Clara, also directed the Broncos to the 1990 NCAA Tournament. No stranger to NCAA Tournament success, Sampson – prior to his five seasons at Santa Clara – was an assistant coach with UCLA and helped guide the Bruins to the 1985 NCAA championship. A competition director and outlying site coordinator for the football tournament at the 1984 Olympic Summer Games, Sampson was also an assistant coach at Foothill Junior College (Los Altos, Calif.), where he helped the Owls to the 1980 and 1981 state championships. Sampson earned his master’s degree in education from Stanford and a bachelor’s degree in human performance from San Jose State. Sampson and wife, Sheri, have three children: Brandon, Emily and Trevor.

coach and technical assistant at the international, professional and collegiate levels for two decades, Shaun Harris is in his second year as an assistant coach with the Cal Poly men’s soccer program. During his first season on the Cal Poly bench in 2015, Harris helped Cal Poly to its first NCAA

A

Tournament appearance in seven years while the squad match a program record 11 victories. Harris arrived at Cal Poly in January 2015 after serving as a Performance and Technical Analyst with UEFA at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. In that capacity, Harris also worked at the 2012 UEFA European Championship in Poland and Ukraine, the 2004 edition in Portugal, the 2013 U-21 UEFA Championships in Israel and the 2013 U-17 UEFA Championships in Slovakia. Prior to his UEFA tenure, Harris was the head coach and technical director at Capital City FC (Ottawa, Ontario). As part of a seven-season tenure within the

professional game, Harris was responsible for the club's day-to-day operations and helped Capital City FC to first-division promotion to the Canadian Soccer League and a runner-up finish in the 2011 Givova Cup. As an IFD academy coach with Everton Football Club of the Barclays Premier League (200811), Harris served as head coach of the U-23 and U-20 squads that competed in the United Soccer Leagues. Also an academy coach with Everton, Harris helped identify and scout players for the club. Harris first worked with Cal Poly head coach Steve Sampson at Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy. A member of Sampson's

technical staff, Harris – who worked at the club from 2005-07 – helped the Galaxy capture the 2005 MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup. Before his MLS tenure, Harris worked with the United States Soccer Federation's National Development Program (2003-04), where he was responsible for technical, training and pre-match management of U-14 and U-15 squads. With the USSF, Harris also worked on two of the three FIFA World Cups hosted in the United States. At the collegiate level, Harris has served as the top assistant coach at Cal Baptist (2008-09), where he helped the Lancers to successive postseason appear-

ances and an NAIA national ranking and as the associate head coach at Irvine Valley College (2007-08), where he assisted the Lasers to consecutive state tournament finalist appearances and a peak position of No. 8 in the NSCAA Junior College Poll. Under Harris, 16 former players have reached Major League Soccer while a total of 56 players have earned professional contracts worldwide. Of the 56 players, nine have earned caps for their respective national teams in seven different countries. Additionally, Harris has coached more than 100 former academy players that have earned university scholarships.

As a team in 2015, Cal Poly shipped the third fewest goals (24) among Big West teams. Hernandez arrived at Cal Poly in August 2015 having spent the previous two years as the U-16 and U-18 goalkeeper trainer at Real Salt Lake AZ Development Academy. As part of one of U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy programs, Hernandez groomed prospective players for both U.S. Soccer and Major League Soccer’s Real

Salt Lake, developing training sessions and organizing film review sessions. From June-July 2013 and as part of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Hernandez served as U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper coach under Jürgen Klinsmann. Working with international standouts such as Tim Howard (Everton F.C., Colorado Rapids) and Brad Guzan (Aston Villa F.C.), Hernandez helped the U.S. to a fifth Gold Cup championship. “Ignacio brings a wealth of experience to Cal Poly, having coached collegiately, professionally and internationally,” Mustang head coach Steve Sampson said. “Real Salt Lake were academy finalists for three years and

national champions once. In the U.S. National Team’s run-up to qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, his goalkeepers won every game he coached in.” Prior to his time with the U.S. National Team, Hernandez worked with UCLA’s goalkeepers (2010-11) and was responsible for strengthening technique and optimizing physical and mental performance. Hernandez’s first stop with a national team squad occurred in Costa Rica (2002-03) and under Sampson. Hernandez then served as the El Salvador Men’s National Team goalkeeper coach (2006-07). In between international assignments, Hernandez was LA

Galaxy’s main goalkeeper trainer from 2003-05. Under Sampson during the 2005 season, Hernandez helped the Galaxy lift both the MLS Cup and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Among other coaching assignments, Hernandez has trained goalkeepers at former Premier Development League club Orange County Zodiacs (1999-2000), Pateadores Soccer Club (1998-05) and Santa Ana College (2001-08). A native of Mexico, Hernandez played professionally for 15 seasons and kept goal for some of the nation’s leading clubs, including Atlante F.C. (1987-89) and Deportivo Toluca F.C. (198991).

Alex G. Spanos Stadium The Home of Cal Poly Men’s Soccer

lex G. Spanos Stadium – rated No. 9 on CollegeSoccerNews.com’s 2011 list of The Most Exciting Places to Watch a College Soccer Match – serves as the home of the Cal Poly men’s soccer program. Backed by some of the largest crowds in the history of collegiate soccer, the Mustangs have provided their fans with plenty to cheer about during the venue’s 10 years. Entering the 2016 campaign, the Mustangs have produced a 54-19-14 overall mark at the complex and a 26-10-10 record against Big West Conference opponents. Additionally, the Mustangs have recorded 29 shutout victories at home while Cal Poly’s goalkeepers have kept 35 clean sheets. Nationally, Cal Poly’s home support is almost without peer. Of the top 43 best-attended regular season matches in the history of NCAA soccer, 10 have occurred at Spanos Stadium during the past nine seasons. During the last three seasons, Cal Poly’s 11,075-seat sellouts for matches versus Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara have ranked as three of the top six best attended collegiate soccer matches in the nation – outdrawing every game from the College Cup during that time span. With the seating capacity at 11,075, Spanos Stadium can accommodate 3,480 fans in the chairback and bench seating on the refurbished California avenue side. In 2009, a video board was installed at a cost of more than $1 million. Twice during the past nine seasons Fox Sports has produced a national television broadcast of Cal Poly’s showdown against UC Santa Barbara from Spanos Stadium.
