Jenny

Condon

Head Coach • 11th Season • Iowa State, 1991 265-239-1 {Cal Poly, Overall} • 116-91 {Big West Conference}

he most successful head coach in Cal Poly softball program history, three-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year selection Jenny Condon enters her 11th season in 2015. Having directed Cal Poly to Big West titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007 and 2009, Condon’s 265 career victories at Cal Poly rank as the ninth highest total by a Big West head coach and the second highest total by any Mustang coach in school history. Condon’s 116 conference victories also rank 10th in Big West history. The Big West's representative to the NFCA Division I Head Coaches Committee, Condon became the 11th Big West coach to earn 200 victories at a member institution during Cal Poly's final game of the 2011 season. Under Condon, Cal Poly has finished in the top half of the Big West standings seven times. Individually, Condon has helped produce 40 All-Big West selections at Cal Poly, seven Big West Player of the Year honorees, seven NFCA All-West Region selections and one All-America selection.

T

Under Condon, the Mustangs have found success on and off the field. In 10 previous seasons, Cal Poly players have earned 35 Big West All-Academic honors – an average of 3.5 Mustangs per season. Condon's programs have been especially adept in defending Bob Janssen Field, having compiled a 105-80 (.567) home record under her guidance. Included in that mark is a programrecord 19-game home winning streak from May 9, 2008 to May 2, 2009. The 2014 season proved to be another banner year for the Mustangs with the program finishing 33-19 overall and one game short of capturing the Big West title and the conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament invitation. Highlighted by Sierra Hyland’s selection as Big West Pitcher of the Year and Freshman Pitcher of the Year, seven Mustangs earned all-conference praise. The 2009 season proved to be the finest effort in Cal Poly's 21-year Division I tenure as the Mustangs established single-season program records for overall winning percentage (.774), conference winning percentage (.857), conference victories (18), fewest conference defeats (three) and fewest overall defeats (12) en route to capturing a second Big West title and a berth in the

NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs, who also made program history by rising as high as No. 21 in the USA Today/NFCA poll, produced their first NCAA Tournament victories at the Division I level and reached the championship round of the Stanford regional. Behind Anna Cahn's Big West Pitcher of the Year honor, a programrecord nine Mustangs garnered all-conference praise. Prior to the 2009 campaign, Cal Poly's 2007 season ranked as the most-notable year in program history. Aside from capturing the program's first Big West title and securing its first NCAA Tournament berth at the Division I level, Cal Poly established thensingle-season records for total victories (39) and overall (.696) and conference (.778) winning percentage. After dealing defeats to No. 12 Washington, No. 6 Northwestern and No. 9 Stanford, Cal Poly opened Big West play with eight-straight victories. The Mustangs, who led the conference race wire-towire, closed the regular season by winning five of their final six games and a 3-2 victory against Pacific on May 11 not only secured the Big West crown, but also provided Condon her 100th career victory. Headlined by Big West Player of the Year selection Lisa Modglin – who also doubled as Cal Poly's first NFCA All-America pick

in nine years – Cal Poly placed eight Mustangs on the 2007 all-conference team. A standout player in the collegiate and international arenas, Condon's influence at Cal Poly was felt instantly as her inaugural 2005 squad posted a 35-16 mark. The Mustangs went 15-6 in Big West play and the secondplace finish was, at the time, the best showing in program history. Cal Poly's 27-23 record in 2006 was backed by an 11-7 Big West mark that guaranteed a third-place finish. The record solidified the program's first back-toback winning campaigns since the 1996 (23-19) and 1997 (37-17) seasons. Condon began her coaching career at UNLV in 1994, assisting the Rebels to a third-place finish at the 1995 WCWS. She relocated to Northwestern in 1997 before beginning a two-year stint with Oregon State in 1998. The following season, the Beavers recorded a schoolrecord 47 wins and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Head coach Kirk Walker's staff earned Speedline/NFCA Pacific Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Condon spent the 2000 campaign with UNLV before returning to Corvallis in 2001. She served four additional seasons at Oregon State until accepting the Cal

Poly head coaching position on Aug. 25, 2004. Condon competed collegiately at Iowa State and completed a prolific career in 1990. A 1989 NFCA AllAmerica second team selection, four-time All-Big Eight honoree and three-time academic all-conference pick, Condon remains Iowa State's all-time leader for hits (216), runs (120), triples (24) and batting average (.351). The outfielder was inducted into the Iowa State Hall of Fame in 2003. A native of Edina, Minn., Condon earned a bachelor's degree in education from Iowa State in 1991 with a minor in health. Condon began a two-year stint with USA Softball in 1994 by helping the Americans capture the 1994 International Softball Federation World Championship in St. John's, Newfoundland. A year later, the United States won the Pan-American Games gold medal in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Additionally, Condon played on three National Women's Fastpitch League championship teams with the California Commotion and was named an ASA AllAmerican four times – twice with the Commotion and twice more with MCM Sports. She earned gold medals in softball at the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1994 and 1995 and in team handball at the 1993 competition.

Gina

Vecchione

Associate Head Coach • Third Season • UCLA, 1982

ith two decades of collegiate coaching experience to draw upon, Gina Vecchione is in her third season as the associate head coach with the Cal Poly softball program. Vecchione, who works primarily with the program’s hitters and outfielders and coaches first base, helped the 2014 Mustangs lead the Big West Conference in fewest strikeouts (3.0 per game) while Cal Poly’s .288 team batting average marked a 38-point improvement from the previous season. Six Mustang

W

hitters from Cal Poly’s 2014 squad earned All-Big West Conference praise. Vecchione arrived on the central coast after serving as an assistant for 13 seasons at UCLA (2000-12). With Vecchione on staff, the Bruins captured Women's College World Series championships in 2003, 2004 and 2010. Vecchione helped the 2010 UCLA championship squad set school records for home runs (108), slugging percentage (.602), on-base percentage (.432) and walks (244). The Bruins, who appeared in the Women's College World Series championship game or series six times during Vecchione's tenure, also captured conference titles in 2002, 2006 and 2009. With Vecchione in the dugout,

the Bruins produced a 609-1601 (.791) record with UCLA's staff earning NFCA Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year praise in 2004 and 2010. "Gina's resume speaks for itself. She's excelled as a player and coach at every level in our sport and her experience of playing and coaching with national championship programs is invaluable to our players," said Mustang head coach Jenny Condon, who served as an assistant coach alongside Vecchione at Oregon State during the 1998 and 1999 seasons. "As a player, Gina was an incredible hitter and outfielder. However, what really sets Gina apart is her passion and enthusiasm for the game. Nobody loves the game more than Gina and she has the unique ability to instill that love in

Chelsey

her players. A three-time All-Pacific Region selection as a UCLA outfielder (1980-82), Vecchione is one of only four Bruins to have a number retired (2). After helping UCLA to the first NCAA championship as a senior in 1982, Vecchione was named to the All-Women's College World Series team and as an All-American. As a junior in 1981, Vecchione led UCLA in doubles (10) and RBI (21). Vecchione, a 1997 inductee into the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame, began her coaching career as a volunteer assistant at UCLA. A member of the 1983 United States National Team that earned a silver medal at the Pan American Games, Vecchione was a seven-time AllASA selection with the

Raybestos Brakettes (Stratford, Conn.) and assisted the club to eight national championships in 12 seasons. She finished as the leading batter at the 1988 ASA national tournament with a .444 average. At the collegiate level, Vecchione spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Oregon State (1995-99) before accepting a position with UCLA. During her final season in Corvallis alongside Condon, Vecchione helped the Beavers advance to the NCAA Regional championship game where Oregon State fell a victory shy of advancing to the program's first Women's College World Series. A native of New Rochelle, N.Y., Vecchione earned a sociology degree from UCLA in 1984.

Barclay

Assistant Coach (Pitching) • Second Season • Oklahoma State, 2007

helsey Barclay is in her second season as an assistant coach with the Cal Poly softball team and as the program’s pitching coach. During Barclay’s first season with the Mustangs, Cal Poly’s 2014 rotation led the

C

Big West Conference and ranked 27th among more than 300 NCAA Division I programs with a 2.13 ERA. The Mustang rotation also led the Big West in strikeouts (311 and 5.92 per game) and fewest home runs (23) and earned runs (113) allowed. Under Barclay, Mustang righthander Sierra Hyland was named 2014 Big West Pitcher of the Year after finishing 13th nationally in strikeouts (263) and 15th in victories (26).

Barclay arrived on the central coast after serving as an assistant and pitching coach with Marshall (2011-13). Barclay capped her tenure in Huntington, West Virginia by helping the Thundering Herd to a 36-22 overall mark, the program’s first Conference USA championship and an appearance in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Marshall’s 2013 pitching staff ranked 34th among NCAA Division I programs with a 2.25 ERA. Dur-

ing each of Barclay’s final two seasons with Marshall, the Herd pitching staff finished among the top-three Conference USA programs in ERA, strikeouts and opposing batting average. Prior to her time at Marshall, Barclay served as the graduate assistant pitching coach at Louisiana-Monroe for the 2010 season. A native of San Jose, Calif., Barclay earned Horizon League All-Newcomer team

praise during her 2004 freshman season at IllinoisChicago, in addition to helping the Flames to the NCAA Tournament. After transferring to West Valley College (Saratoga, Calif.), Barclay was named NorCal Pitcher of the Year after winning 22 times and compiling a 0.54 ERA. BOB JANSSEN FIELD The home of mustang soFTBALL

he 2015 season marks the Cal Poly softball program’s 15th anniversary at Bob Janssen Field. Named for the San Luis Obispo native dedicated to promoting youth sports and recreation within the central coast community, the Robert H. Janssen Foundation contributed $250,000 toward the construction of the project in order to support both the Mustang softball program and local youth sports programs. Located adjacent to Robin Baggett Baseball Stadium and comprising half of Ozzie Smith Plaza, Janssen Field is part of the 47-acre Sports Complex, an area that includes multipurpose fields for use by the student population. Janssen Field features 426 permanent chair-back seats. With the inclusion of bleachers, Janssen Field seats 1,000 spectators, making it the largest stadium among the eight Big West Conference member programs. On March 25, 2007, a stadium-record 1,532 fans packed Janssen Field to watch Cal Poly battle nationallyranked UCLA (top). The lighted complex also includes enclosed batting cages and practice areas for both teams, an on-site clubhouse for the Mustangs (above), restrooms and concession and merchandising areas.

T

Janssen Field measures 205 feet down the right and left field foul lines and 220 feet to straightaway center field. The outfield fence measures six feet. The first game at Janssen Field was played on March 3, 2001, with Cal Poly defeating UC Riverside 8-0. Entering the 2015 campaign, Cal Poly is 157-110 at Janssen Field. The 2009 Mustang squad set single-season program records for total victories (18), fewest defeats (one) and winning percentage (.947) at the stadium en route to capturing the Big West championship.
