Closing Speaker Captain Lynn Korwatch Captain Lynn Korwatch graduated from the California Maritime Academy as a member of the first class of women to attend a service academy. After sailing in various capacities as a deck officer she received her unlimited Master’s license qualifying her to command vessels of any tonnage, on any ocean and in 1988 she was the first woman to command a United States commercial vessel. In 1991 she was promoted to General Manager, Marine Operations of Matson Navigation Co., where her responsibilities included managing the safe and efficient operation of the 14 vessels owned or operated by Matson in the Pacific Basin trades. Lynn currently serves as Executive Director of the Marine Exchange of the San Francisco Bay Region (SFMX), a non-profit membership organization that was founded in 1849 and is the second oldest corporation in California. For almost 160 years the Marine Exchange has been responsible for the timely and accurate tracking and reporting of all vessel movements in San Francisco Bay on behalf of its members and industry partners. She has been honored as the Navy League “Woman of the Year”, received the Women in Transportation “Glass Ceiling Award”, the Propeller Club of the Gate “Woman of the Year”, has received several certificates of merit form the US Coast Guard and was an answer on the game show “Jeopardy”. Lynn is married to fellow classmate, Larry, a recently retired ship’s Chief Engineer. Her son, Kent, who is a 2010 graduate of Cal Maritime, is currently working at as a manufacturing engineer at Northrop Grumman Marine Systems.
