NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS HUGH SEABORN CHIEF EXECUTIVE, CAD O GAN

CHELSEA WELCOMES Design fans will welcome The Conran Shop, opening its flagship on Sloane Square. As it happens, ‘it’s on the same road where Sir Terence [Conran, founder] lived in the late 2000s and early 2010s.’ Elle Decoration describes it as “fresh start and, fittingly, also a coming home.” Foodies will enjoy Azzurra, a new destination on Sloane Street that combines the elegant simplicity of the storied Amalfi coast and sustainably-sourced British seafood. Home to a striking 16m bar, a three-tiered seafood display and wood-burning pizza oven at the far end, a Sgroppino trolley will also grace each table - blending zesty lemon sorbet, vodka and prosecco for an exquisite experience. Opening later this autumn.

Welcome Autumn brings a renewed sense of energy and there is certainly lots to look forward to as we head into the new season. Celebrating new arrivals to Chelsea, from flagship shop openings to worldclass hotels, we also provide an update on some of the major developments including The Gaumont, 196-222 King’s Road, and the ongoing Sloane Street public realm transformation. You are also invited to join us for an update on the results of the community consultation for Chelsea Manor Street, with an exciting opportunity to meet the amazing artist selected for the public art commission. We very much hope to see you then – details on page 2.

Chelsea welcomes some fresh new faces in autumn. We look at the most exciting openings: One Sloane, the much-anticipated hotel from Jean-Louis Costes, French designer Francois-Joseph Graf and Cadogan, blends British heritage and charm with a dash of Parisian flair. A six-year project, Hugh Seaborn said: “It is a joy to see so much of Chelsea’s exquisite architecture and rich artistic heritage reflected and celebrated throughout One Sloane – creating a truly beautiful and unique hotel which will appeal to both discerning visitors and locals alike.” Read more about the collaboration in Wallpaper* Magazine or in The Times. Elsewhere, The Chelsea Townhouse, previously The Draycott hotel, opens following a tasteful restoration and promises British heritage mixed with contemporary elegance. Vogue describes a stay as “like stepping into a Henry James novel”.

Pavilion Road crowned one of Britain's best streets

EARL CADO GAN 1937-2023 With great sadness, Earl Cadogan passed away on 11 June 2023 at the age of 86. Lord Cadogan led a full life, finding enjoyment readily and most comfortable in the role of philanthropist.

Following an open call across the UK, Pavilion Road has been voted one of the top three streets in Britain in a competition organised by Create Streets to mark the Coronation.

Greg Hands, MP for Chelsea and Fulham remembers Lord Cadogan for his commitment to the neighbourhood: “He was ever present in Chelsea, and cared deeply about this very special part of London, the community, the history, the buildings and the environment. Charles leaves an enormous legacy of good works and service to Chelsea. He will be very fondly remembers by the whole community.”

Nicholas Boys-Smith, founder, described it as ‘an absolute masterpiece of urban acupuncture overseen by landowners, the Cadogan Estate, who take their stewarding carefully.’

A full tribute can be found on the Cadogan website.

THE GAUMONT (192-222 KING'S ROAD) Cadogan’s new development, The Gaumont, at 196-222 King’s Road has been completed and is set to become a landmark destination comprising a new Chelsea cinema, rooftop bar, enhanced Waitrose, gastropub, flagship retail space, creative space, offices and homes. Its new name, The Gaumont, is a celebration of the building’s cinematic and theatrical heritage Cadogan’s intention with this development has always been to further contribute to the King’s Road’s cultural and creative scene. A community consultation was held recently to gather views on a proposed ‘creative cluster’ for Chelsea Manor Street, strengthening the King’s Road as a place for creators, innovators and artists – thank you to those contributed. We are now working to find occupiers who meet the output of this consultation. Another exciting aspect is the commission of a significant new piece of public art – a local cultural panel selection (including the Chelsea Arts Club, V&A and Royal Society of Sculptors) led to the appointment of internationally acclaimed artist, Shezad Dawood. The aim is to unveil this artwork in autumn 2024. You are invited to join us for an update on the results of the consultation and an opportunity to meet the artist, Shezad Dawood, at The Gaumont on Wednesday, 18 October 2023. We very much hope to see you there. Please RSVP to kaya.dewulf@cadogan.co.uk

SLOANE STREET CHRISTMA S UPDATE The Sloane Street transformation progresses well. A partnership between Cadogan and Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, this extraordinary makeover will make it cleaner, greener and more beautiful – enhancing the neighbourhood for residents and visitors alike. A film by Wallpaper* brings the vision to life. From 18 November, the works will move away

from the shops towards the central section of Sloane Street. Barriers will remain in place for health and safety, however areas which have yet to be paved with the new York stone will be temporarily tarmacked for pedestrian ease. The northbound street closure will remain in place, with Southbound traffic open. For further information, visit sloanestreetfuture.co.uk

'CIT Y LIVING, LO C AL LIFE' GR ANT S The Kensington and Chelsea ward-based community programme helps residents improve their neighbourhoods by creating opportunities for conversations and providing funding for community activities. Find out more and apply for a grant via the RBKC website.

RENTAL E-BIKE PARKING Rental e-bike parking is being introduced across the borough, with 128 new painting parking spaces and 40 ‘virtual’ bays which will make the borough one of the highest densities of rental e-bike parking in London. These parking spaces are designed to boost visibility in a positive way and encourage more people to use rental e-bikes, over the cars, for short trips to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality.
