Natural beauty and exciting activities await in Los Cabos.

¡Bienvenidos a Los Cabos! With glorious Sea of Cortez beaches, year-round sunshine, award-winning dining, championship golf and legendary fishing, it’s little wonder that Los Cabos is one of the world’s premier vacation destinations. Situated at the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos offers a little bit of paradise for every visitor—you’ll find everything from beautiful natural scenery to celebrity-studded nightlife. A favorite for sunny getaways, Cabo is geographically blessed with a safe, convenient and SCENIC LOCATION enjoying island-like isolation from the U.S. border and mainland Mexico. Surrounded by the Sea of Cortez, the Pacific Ocean and miles of enchanting desert terrain, Los Cabos feels delightfully remote. However, it’s just a SHORT FLIGHT from many major American gateways, and just a matter of a few hours from departure to poolside margaritas for many visitors. Los Cabos is located just south of the Tropic of Cancer (on the same latitude

While visitors often think of bustling Cabo San Lucas when they hear “Los Cabos,” the region is actually home to two very distinctive cities. Cabo San Lucas (often simply called “Cabo”) is the vibrant heart of tourism, with a world-class marina, stylish resorts lining wonderfully SWIMMABLE MÉDANO BEACH, chic nightclubs, and the iconic natural rock arch at Land’s End where the waters of the Pacific meet those of the Sea of Cortez.

The area boasts a RICH HISTORY, from the original native Pericú peoples to the conquistadors and pirates who once patrolled the coastline. In the mid-twentieth century, Hollywood legends like Bing Crosby, John Wayne and Desi Arnaz traveled to Baja before the advent of the highway and international flights. They arrived in private planes and yachts to relax and fish in seclusion. Tourism and infrastructure has boomed since then, but Baja remains a favorite CELEBRITY RETREAT.

● WELCOME

as the Bahamas and Hawaii’s island of Kauai), and throughout the year, clear skies and low annual rainfall make visiting a delight. Los Cabos enjoys summer temperatures in the 90’s and daytime temperatures in the 70’s during the winter months when migrating whales put on spectacular shows offshore.

7

About 20 miles away, San José del Cabo offers a slower pace, romantic historic architecture, a thriving arts community and traditional town square. Linking the two cities is the stretch known as the Tourist Corridor, sprinkled with ultra-luxury resorts, PICTURESQUE BEACHES and world-famous golf courses including Cabo del Sol and Palmilla.

With so much to do, from DIVING with thousands of tropical fish in some of the world’s most pristine waters to fighting a prize marlin, there’s never a dull moment in Los Cabos. Whether you choose to hop aboard a SUNSET CRUISE, enjoy tacos and beer at a beachfront cantina or treat yourself to a day of spa pampering, the vacation of a lifetime awaits!

Further afield, remote retreats offer alternative tastes of Baja’s magic, from the tranquility of the EAST CAPE to the galleries and laid-back surfer vibe of TODOS SANTOS. Throughout the region, visitors will discover warm hospitality and modern services. And while knowing a little Spanish can be helpful, English is spoken in many of the resort areas, restaurants and bars.

Corridor Beaches PLAYA LAS VIUDAS

Tucked along the soaring rock formations at Land’s End, photogenic Lover’s Beach is a must-visit. Hop aboard a water taxi from Médano Beach or the marina, bring supplies for the day and make arrangements for your return as there are no services at the beach. When conditions are good, snorkeling and diving on the bay side can be delightful. Stay out of the water on the Pacific Ocean side known as Divorce Beach, where powerful surf pounds the shore. Swimming on this side is very dangerous.

Also known as Widows Beach, this serene stretch of sand is an insider favorite. A wonderfully tranquil atmosphere and tide pools teeming with marine life make this a great spot to spend a sunny afternoon. Swim with caution and when the waters are calm. Access via the dirt road located near Km. 12.5 on the Tourist Corridor.

For marvelous snorkeling, head out on the Tourist Corridor to Santa Maria, a small half-moon shaped bay that’s as pretty as it gets. Positioned between rugged bluffs, this enchanting cove offers largergrained sand with a faint rosy hue, harmonizing beautifully with the vivid turquoise waters. Very popular for snorkeling and kayaking, this marine sanctuary features a wide variety of colorful tropical fish and sea fans. If you’re driving, look for the access sign near Km. 13 on the highway leading to the dirt parking area, then stroll to the cove.

The centerpiece of Cabo San Lucas Bay, Playa El Médano (“The Dune”) is lined with hotels, bars and restaurants. The gentle waters along this beach make it great for swimming. This lively beach hums with the activity of visitors and vendors, making it a fantastic spot for peoplewatching. As parking is limited, grabbing a taxi may be your best bet. Los Cabos is home to legendary marlin, dorado & tuna fishing.

34

Sport Fishing Known as the “Marlin Capital of the World,” Los Cabos has a long-standing reputation as one of the world’s most prestigious fishing destinations. Well before the area’s tourism industry took off, fishermen in the know headed down to Baja to fight monster fish in these remarkably rich waters. The unique confluence of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez at Land’s End results in an incredible variety of marine life. Anglers will find seasonal abundance of striped, black, and blue marlin, dorado (mahi-mahi), tuna, sea bass, wahoo and roosterfish, among other species in the waters around Los Cabos. The type of fish varies throughout the year based on water temperatures, moon phase, the presence of bait fish, location of fishing vessels and other factors. We work with expert fishing fleets and captains highly skilled in locating the best current fishing spots. Annual tournaments attract international competitors in search of prize-winning catches.

Shopping in Cabo If your vacation itinerary includes the hot pursuit of a great bargain or unique treasure, Los Cabos won’t disappoint. Enchanting small boutiques, outdoor vendors and modern shopping malls offer variety and diversion for every shopper.

Cabo San Lucas In Cabo San Lucas, you’ll discover a bit of everything, from inexpensive baubles to designer clothing, high-end jewelry and quality cigars. Much of the shopping action is centered around the marina and surrounding downtown streets. Browsing by foot is easy and shoppers will delight in simply strolling and windowshopping. Persistent street vendors hawking all manner of goods and services are masters of the hard sell and are best dismissed with a firm “no, gracias” unless you’re truly interested. You’ll have a chance to refine your bargaining skills in Los Cabos, where some friendly haggling is expected and part of the fun in outdoor markets and many smaller shops. Of course,

For a modern, air-conditioned shopping atmosphere, check out the PUERTO PARAISO MALL, featuring clothing shops, jewelry and fine dining, as well as a movie theater and arcade for the kids in a great marina-side location. Nearby, the LUXURY AVENUE BOUTIQUE MALL offers designer clothing, handbags, and jewelry by some of the most prestigious names in international fashion.

If you’re looking for souvenirs, from t-shirts to trinkets, head to the MARINA MERCADO located at the end of Blvd. Marina near the main dock. Founded by artisans from throughout Mexico, you’ll find a great variety of goods in this large building.

many hand-made goods involve a great deal of labor, so be sure to consider the artisan’s time and skill when negotiating.

If Mexico’s national spirit is on the shopping list, stop in at the TEQUILA MUSEUM located in the “Golden Zone” of the marina

near the Marina Fiesta Resort. Here, you can sample and buy exotic tequilas, view distilling equipment on display and snap a photo with one of the charming character sculptures outside. For breezy resort fashion and distinctive women’s clothing, a visit to MAGIC OF THE MOON is a must. For twenty years, Pepita’s flowing fashions with tropical-inspired, hand-painted fabrics have been a Cabo signature. Custom orders are available at the Hildalgo Blvd. boutique in Cabo San Lucas and at sister shop, PEPITA’S, located in the Tourist Corridor. The fascinating art form of hand-blown glass thrives at VITROFUSION Y ARTE GLASS FACTORY just outside of town

off the road to Todos Santos. Worth the jaunt, the factory hums with activity into the early afternoon. A variety of decorative pieces and vessels are available; custom orders require pre-order. If you haven’t arranged for the pre-stocking of your villa, you’ll want to stop for provisions. CHEDRAUI (formerly CCC) and SORIANA are east of Cabo San Lucas on Highway 19. Both large supermarkets offer great quality food items and produce. The WALMART and SAM’S CLUB flank each other close to Km. 2 on the main highway. At the Walmart center, you’ll also find LA EUROPEA offering imported wines and cheeses. Located on Paseo del Pescador and Lázaro Cárdenas, CITY CLUB is a large warehouse store offering groceries and bakery items. Sam’s Club and City Club require memberships or a small fee to shop.

Corridor While shopping options are more limited in the Tourist Corridor, a few shops are worth checking out. ARTESANOS at Km. 2.5 on the main highway is a favorite—you’ll enjoy browsing the tremendous assortment of handmade crafts, colorful pottery, clothing, and decorative items. THE SHOPPES AT PALMILLA are located at Km. 27.5 and offer sophisticated, upscale home décor, art, fashion and fine dining. To stock your pantry, you may want to stop in at COSTCO (requires a membership) located at Km. 4.5 on the main highway, with the usual big-box warehouse variety of foods and beverages.

San José del Cabo

50

Meandering the historic downtown streets of San José del Cabo is a true pleasure, with delightful boutiques at every turn. From November through June, the THURSDAY EVENING ART WALK along Obregón Street is a romantic way to experience San José’s eclectic galleries, many housed in beautiful old buildings, while you sip wine and meet the artists. Among the captivating offerings in San José, NECRI is a sure bet for its beautiful variety of hand-painted Talavera and Majolica ceramics. And, for antiques, tequilas and hand-embroidered goods, head over to ANTIGUA LOS CABOS on Blvd. Mijares. When you need to stock up on groceries, hit up the gleaming MEGA superstore, which is just outside of town, across from

the entrance to the toll highway on Boulevard Mauricio Castro. SORIANA at Km. 34.5 and a new WALMART on the highway near Avenida Valerio Gonzaléz are also good choices.

Todos Santos If you can squeeze in the day trip to this wonderful historic town on the Pacific coast, you’re in for a great afternoon browsing the many world-class galleries. At GALERIA DE TODOS SANTOS, you’ll discover fine art paintings by some of Baja Sur’s top artists. For an intriguing variety of crafts and gifts, check out the wonderful EMPORIO AT HOTEL CALIFORNIA where you’ll find plenty of colorful folk art items and jewelry.

En route to Los Cabos, you will receive a MEXICO TOURIST CARD and a Mexico Customs Declaration form to fill out on the

plane prior to arrival. Each visitor, including children, must be in possession of a Tourist Card. You will need this card to check in for your return flight, so keep it with your ticket. 53

MINORS

In addition to official documentation required for minors, an unaccompanied U.S. or Canadian citizen under 18 years of age: A. Is required to possess a notarized letter signed by both parents giving permission for the minor to travel alone. B. If traveling with one parent, he or she must have a notarized letter from the absent parent, giving permission for the traveling parent to take the minor out of the country or an original court order indicating that the traveling parent has full custody. C. If the minor is traveling with one parent, and the other is deceased, the deceased parent’s Death Certificate must be presented. (Immigration requirements subject to change.)

AT THE AIRPORT

Upon entering Mexico, you’ll be given a baggage declaration form and asked to itemize what you’re bringing into the country. If you’re bringing gifts to friends and relatives in Mexico, you should be prepared to demonstrate to Mexican customs officials the origin and the value of the gifts. TRAVELER’S TIPS cabovillas.com

Tourists are permitted to bring in personal effects duty-free. According to customs regulations, in addition to clothing, personal effects may include a camera, video player, laptop computer, CD player, 5 DVDs, 20 music CDs or audio cassettes, 12 rolls of unused film, and a cellular phone (regulations subject to change). To avoid duty fees on valuable items upon return, you may find it beneficial to register these with U.S. Customs. DO NOT bring firearms, meat, vegetables, plants, fruit, or flowers into Mexico. As you exit the airport, be cautious about in-airport timeshare sales pitches. If you have reserved transportation, your ride will be awaiting outside, where taxis are also available.

Departing Cabo After checking out, make sure you head to the airport on time. Have proper documentation on hand, especially the MEXICO TOURIST CARD you received on the flight to Los Cabos. 54

U.S. Customs: The U.S. Customs Service currently permits most U.S. citizens returning from international travel to bring back $800 worth of merchandise, including 1 liter of alcohol, duty-free. Additional amounts may be subject to applicable duty fees. Some U.S. border states (most notably, Texas) also have imposed restrictions on liquor, wine and beer imports from Mexico. Inquire about restrictions with the liquor control office of the state through which you will return. It is illegal to bring Cuban goods into the U.S. Although some items are allowed, it is advisable not to bring back fruits, vegetables, meat or dairy products. For a list of prohibited items, visit the U.S. Customs website (www.cbp.gov) or contact the U.S. Consulate before returning.

Currency, Credit & Banking U.S. dollars are accepted in many places in Los Cabos. Once your dollars are exchanged for pesos, there is a fee to change them back, so exchange only what you need and note that exchange rates fluctuate daily. Banks offer the best exchange rates. If you travel out of the tourist areas, have pesos on hand. New regulations passed by the Mexican government have tightened the use of American cash dollars (USD) while in Mexico. Businesses

may only accept a maximum of $100 USD CASH per transaction, certain businesses may not accept dollars for any purchases, and hotel and exchange booths will only be allowed to exchange $1,500 per month into Mexican pesos. The use of credit cards, traveler’s checks, Mexican pesos and other foreign currencies are not affected.

● TRAVELER’S TIPS

Since ATM’s are widely available, a good bet is to bring a small amount of U.S. dollars to exchange and then withdraw what you currently need in pesos. Note that most ATM’s in Mexico accept only 4-digit PIN numbers.

cabovillas.com

All major credit cards are accepted in Los Cabos; Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. American Express and Discover Card are accepted in a few locations. Check with your credit card company about international fees. In restaurants and shops, ask if they accept credit. Personal U.S. checks are rarely accepted, so don’t rely on them. 55

Telephones The country code for Mexico is 52. The area code for Los Cabos is 624. Most pay phones accept prepaid cards, which are sold in various denominations at money-exchange booths and many shops. Most Internet cafés offer long-distance calling services. Most cell phone providers will allow you to roam while in Mexico. Check with your provider before your trip. Refer to Useful Phone Numbers (page 57) and Frequently Asked Questions (page 58) for additional information.

Water The water supply for Los Cabos is well water. While many locals drink directly from the tap, multiple factors can lead to contamination. We suggest you drink bottled or purified water and ice.

Weather Just south of the Tropic of Cancer, Los Cabos weather is temperate and sunny, with very little rainfall and an average temperature of 78° F. Sunny, mild winters offer cool nights.

TRAVELER’S TIPS ● cabovillas.com

Summers are hot and arid—perfect beach weather. Summer and fall are usually the best for diving, with warm waters and good visibility. The weather in Cabo is generally great!

Time Zone Info Los Cabos is located within the Mountain Time Zone, 7 hours behind GMT and 2 hours behind New York. In Mexico, Daylight Saving Time is observed from the first Sunday in April until the last Sunday in October.

Security & Safety

56

Los Cabos is a very safe destination. Crime is not a big problem in the resort areas of Los Cabos, but do exercise common sense and caution. Don’t leave valuables unattended. When using an ATM, use the same attention you would at home. Absolutely avoid narcotics and firearms. If in trouble, contact the U.S. consulate; the number is 143-3566. Water safety: There are no lifeguards in Los Cabos. Beach resorts use a flag system to indicate water safety: red indicates danger, yellow means caution and green signifies the water conditions are safe. Use caution around the surf, especially on the rougher Pacific side, where large waves and undertows are common occurrences.

Transportation A number of transportation options are available in Los Cabos. When reserved prior to your trip, ESSV can arrange transportation to and from the airport to your villa or resort. In general, we highly recommend a rental car for convenience and sightseeing. ESSV is proud to offer Avis and National rentals. We recommend reserving your rental car before your trip to assure availability. Private transportation is also available by reservation. Vehicles range from a 6-person limo to a 17-person van. Taxis are available at the airport and in resort areas, but do not run on meters. Be sure to negotiate your fare and be clear about your destination. To reserve transportation, contact your ESSV representative.

Frequently Asked Questions WHAT TYPE OF CLOTHING SHOULD I PACK?

Packing for Cabo San Lucas should be light. It is usually nice and sunny year-round. Pack a light jacket or sweater for mornings and cool nights. Don’t forget the swimsuits! DO I NEED TO SPEAK SPANISH IN LOS CABOS?

Absolutely not. Most people in Los Cabos speak English, and many speak several other languages too. Knowing a little Spanish is helpful. The locals really appreciate the effort. WHAT ABOUT HOSPITALS AND DOCTORS?

Cabo San Lucas has a new American-style (AmeriMed) hospital and some very competent English-speaking doctors. Hospitals may not be equipped for severe trauma cases. Always check with your doctor if there is any doubt about traveling abroad. Before traveling, learn what your health insurance will cover overseas and consider investing in additional travel health insurance. ESSV offers both trip-cancellation and medical travel insurance. WILL MY CELLULAR PHONE WORK IN MEXICO? Most cellular services will allow you to roam in Mexico (charges will apply). If you have a smartphone, be aware that extra data charges may apply while in Mexico. Call your provider before your trip to find out if service is available. ESSV also offers convenient cell phone rentals for your use. Call your ESSV representative to reserve. DRIVING IN BAJA – WHAT SHOULD I KNOW?

ESSV offers competitively priced Avis and National car rentals. Your U.S. driver’s license is valid in Mexico. U.S. auto insurance is not valid in Mexico, so secure additional Mexican insurance through your rental provider. Use common sense and observe local regulations. Parking is limited downtown. WHERE CAN I CHECK MY EMAIL?

Several Internet cafés are available throughout Cabo. Many of our villas and resorts offer wireless Internet access. Some resorts require an additional fee for Wi-Fi access, while others offer free

ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL PROGRAMS FOR KIDS?

Yes. Several resorts offer special children's activities including part- or whole-day kids' clubs with special activities, supervised pool time, arts and crafts, meals, games and more! Check out our Kids' Club page at www.cabovillas.com/kidsclub for more information. ESSV can also arrange professional and caring babysitting services at your private villa or resort.

WHAT'S THE DEEP-SEA FISHING LIKE?

The waters of Cabo San Lucas offer world-class fishing. Los Cabos has long been a favorite destination for its abundance of big-game species like marlin, dorado (mahi-mahi), tuna, wahoo and more. ESSV can arrange a perfect day of fishing for you and your group. Led by experienced crews, our fishing charters will take you to the richest sites in the area. See the fishing section in this guide (page 34) for more information.
