NORTHWEST CROSSING SATURDAY

FA R M ER S M AR K E T G U I D E WELCOME TO MARKET SEASON 2019! LOVES

It’s presented, once again, by the fine people at Cascade Sotheby’s International Realty. We are so excited by our upcoming market for so many reasons! We see this beginning of the season as an exciting "burst" announcing the wonderful beginning of summer! Our market guide, (fine art friend), the rainbow rooster (as painted by John Hillmer), symbolizes all that we love about this special event. Our market is bursting with color, waking up our senses, reminding us that local and health and joy are only a once a weekend, Saturday, celebration away! And we can’t think of a better way to WAKE UP on Saturday mornings, then to the sights and sounds of this brilliant market! We'd like to thank all our new and returning farmers and food artisans who bring healthful, regionally produced foods to our community, and to the thousands of people who come each month to support our vendors, patronize neighboring businesses, shop for their families, and enjoy their time at the market. There’s a trend, country wide, that is seeing far too many farmers markets in decline. For the past decade, as communities seek a return to all things local, to a sense of healthy connection, farmer’s markets have been an exploding enterprise. Sadly, this trend has contributed to a glut of markets, where far too many are struggling in the wake of such saturation. And so, we’d also like to give great thanks to you, the many fine neighbors and merchants of NorthWest Crossing, the solid, regular contingent of greater Bendites, and the sprinkling of tourists, who have marked this event as a weekly ritual, as we are pleased to report that this market is solid, solid, solid!

FARMERS MARKET PRESENTED BY

JUNE 8-SEPT 21 SATURDAYS 10AM - 2PM

This market and its farm to table way of life, has been connecting families and farmers with artisans and small business owners for eleven years now. Look for fresh produce, meats, cheeses, eggs, flowers, hand-crafted items, tasty food and drink each week. We are introducing a “jaw dropping” professional busking space in the middle of the main, market, intersection, as well as other performing artists located between LaRosa and Umpqua Bank. Here we go! Please join us on Saturdays from June 8th to September 21st~ we can’t wait to see you!

BEHIND THE SCENES: A LOOK AT WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE A MARKET!

It takes a West Bend Property Company, who 11 years ago began dedicating resources, staffing, and marketing/administrative support towards the vision that Bend should have a signature market outside of downtown to compliment the amazing Downtown Bend market. It takes the vision and tenacity of a decade’s worth of terrific market leaders, including Tiffany Clark, Melissa King, and Melissa Tugmon. It takes a team of three to six operations staff, waking up at 5am closing streets, and putting the market to bed by cleaning up after the market, and in between setting up tents, tables, and market umbrellas, fitting down linens, and placing key signage and zero waste stations, all into location. It takes a great market manager coordinating the pre-market vendor recruitment and registration, the marketing, and jumping forward to onsite care such as chalking out booth spaces and greeting, warmly, some 100 + vendors with a smile at check-in. It takes a permit specialist to work with the City of Bend to make sure all i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed. It takes a combined effort between managers to procure and care for sponsors. It takes Liliana’s roller blades, and Cecilia’s fine decorating touch. It takes an event company owner to meddle less, and vision more. It takes a team. And this team is a great one!

LILIANA CLARK

Volunteer Assistant to the Market Manager

Liliana Clark bursts with joy and effusion, bringing her roller blades in tow to help check in vendors, as she’s grown up and volunteered around the market since it’s conception! She’s a favorite among vendors! CECILIA CLARK Assistant to the Market Manager

2019 is a big year for 14 year old Cecilia at the market, as she migrates from volunteer to employee. She’ll be assisting the market managers, helping to check in vendors, decorating tables, and lending her beautiful spirit to whatever is needed.

CAMERON CLARK Farmers Market Owner, C3 Events

Cameron has been producing events for more than 35 years (almost 30 in Bend). His history includes stints as a college administrator/arts presenter at Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Redlands (where he earned a masters degree), and founding and producing many of Central Oregon’s favorite events, including the NorthWest Crossing Saturday Farmers Market. PARIS TUGMON

Assistant to Market Manager

Returning to the market for a second year, Paris helps on site with morning check-ins, connecting with vendors, and caring for market aesthetics…quite the job for a middleschooler!

ELIJAH TRAN

Assistant Operations Lead

Elijah took his first turn with the market last year as an operations staff. His hard work ethic and delightful spirit are infectious. A musician, and champion tai chi wushu competitor, the market is blessed to have him returning in a management role. TAYLOR JOHNSON

Administrative Market Manager

A recent graduate from University of Michigan, Taylor’s swooped in and picked up multiple administrative and social media tasks for the market, and delightfully, always with a smile.

Operations Team

Melissa brings her renaissance woman skillset to the market manager role. A marketing and web design specialist, Melissa has been flexing her sizable talents by additionally helping women entrepreneurs to find success as a consultant. Still, it’s her humanity that is most enjoyable, and the market is a reflection of this beauty. HEATHER LEEDER

Operations Leader

As a teacher, tutor, and communitygarden-queen-bee at the International School of Bend, Heather brings her guidance, compassion and care to our market staff as one of our Operations Leads.

For seven years Aaron has and continues to bring a calm and steady demeanor to the market. This, along with his leadership and training to our crew, makes him a star. ALDEN DAY Operations Team

Full of humor and wit, we are delighted that Alden is willing to drive all the way from Prineville to make sure our streets closures kick off right at 5am. NATHAN CANNON Operations Team

His second year working at the market, Nathan has a hop-to-it, get-it-done kind of attitude, along with a dependability that we love and can count on!

When not tearing up the Mountain View football field, Hunter rocks set up and tear down at the market. A Junior this year, we’re excited he’ll be spending another summer with us at the Market. JIM KONE Market Business & Sponsorship Sales

For over a decade Jim has been working alongside C3 Events to bring local businesses down onto the street to interact with the community. His charm and care are a delight to all and we are thrilled to have him working with our market sponsors this year.

We’ve made a great catch!

Have you ever wandered the streets of any urban place, and been awe struck, turning a corner into the jaw dropping sounds of a street musician that blows your mind? We are borrowing this notion, for this season’s market music. There will still be moments of marimba from Portland and Bend and steel drums from the youth of the tri-cities in Washington, but most weeks will feature amazing talents, performing solo, maybe with some intricate looping, in the main intersection of the event, startling market attendees into pure joy! We hope you enjoy this pivot!

While the students range in age from 9 to 12 years old, their playing ability belies their age. The music that they play comes almost exclusively from Zimbabwe and is very high-energy. They never fail to please their audience!

JULY 20, JULY 27, & SEPTEMBER 21

BUSKERS As you wander our NorthWest Crossing Saturday Farmers Market you will bump into the vibrance of our three resident busking stations. Dylan Even Stevens will provide spell-inducing tones with his didgeridoo (accompanied, sometimes, by Native American flute and more). Ernie the market bagpiper (Ernie Geiger), will settle into the second busking station, after announcing the beginning of each market, by walking the entire footprint of the market with his signature sound of pipes. And the String Theory School of Music, will provide opportunities for young musicians to cut their chops at the final busking station. Young musician, Cecilia Clark, may make her busking debut as well! Please support our buskers by making donations to them if you enjoy their market sounds!

LOCAL PARTNERS SPOTLIGHT Located in the intersection of NW Crossing Drive, you’ll find our Community Hub… your place for information and everything market related. Find out who is performing, what activities are available for children, what special programming is being offered, and get any questions you may have answered. Our Community Hub is kindly staffed by volunteer neighbors from Discovery Park Lodge. Central Oregon Locavore is a local, community based non-profit established in 2009, located near downtown Bend, serving both food producers and consumers throughout Central Oregon. Locavore operates a year-round indoor farmer’s marketplace which features freshly harvested produce, organic grass-fed meats, free-range eggs, local honey, locally made value added products such as salsa, sauces, and many environmentallyconscious products for sustainable living. In addition to the marketplace, Locavore also operates a number of programs including Farm Kids! Willing Workers on Local Farms, Edible Adventure Crew, Small Farmer Support Program, and farm-to-table dinners such as Meet Your Farmer Dinner Series and Farm to Table Dinners and Events. These programs serve to connect and educate community members to the local foodscape of Central Oregon and provide a platform for support and celebration.

The Rethink Waste Project, a program of the Environmental Center (whose mission is to embed sustainability into daily life in Central Oregon), works to educate people around the importance of their waste reduction. We work to promote reuse, conscious consumerism, repair, food waste reduction, and recycling correctly. The City of Bend has passed a plastic bag ban that will be in effect beginning July 1. One goal at the market this year is to promote using reusable bags and to educate around why it's important. The High Desert Food and Farm Alliance (HDFFA) is dedicated to supporting a community based food system in Central Oregon. Again this year, HDFFA will collect fresh food donations at the market to help augment non-perishable food items in the pantry system. Currently, there is a push by the Oregon Food Bank to increase the number of fresh foods available at regional food banks and to partner pantries by 50% over the next five years. In Central Oregon, HDFFA is partnering with NeighborImpact, to help drive this change. Among their many programs, they operate the food distribution center for over thirty food pantries and shelves in the region. The collection point at the NorthWest Crossing Saturday Farmers Market will also serve as a location for backyard gardeners to bring their extra garden vegetables. Please join us in supporting this very worthy endeavor for our community!
