The Florida Panhandle is a stretch of coastline on the Gulf of Mexico that offers some of the most beautiful and diverse vacation destinations in the state. From the white sandy beaches of Destin to the historic charm of Pensacola, the Panhandle has something for all tastes.

One of the most popular destinations in the Panhandle is Destin. Known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”, Destin is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In 2023, Boston is commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, a pivotal event inAmerican history that played a significant role in the lead-up to theAmerican Revolution.

As the city prepares for this momentous occasion, a series of events, attractions, and programs are being planned to honor the legacy of this historic event. Visitors from around the globe will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of Boston, while celebrating the city’s role in shaping the United States.

The celebration will take place annually on December 16, featuring iconic Bostonians in period costumes engaging in the vigorous debate that ultimately led to the destruction of tea. In addition to these reenactments, several other personalities who made significant contributions to the event will be showcased.

The festivities are planned to include a grand-scale, live reenactment at Quincy Market, with numerous

organizations from Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts working together to create a year of dynamic programming in honor of the semiquincentennial of the Boston Tea Party.

Anational and regional collection of loose tea will be on display, accompanied by a Historic Tours of America trolley. Furthermore, the city will introduce a new “Tea Talks” Speaker Series in 2023, a Boston Tea Party Descendants Program, and the 41st Boston Harborfest, with the Tea Party as the featured theme. These events will provide an engaging and educational experience for visitors, showcasing the importance of the Boston Tea Party inAmerica’s journey toward independence.

The museum offers an interactive, educational experience for visitors of all ages, including a full-scale replica of the ships used in the event and a reenactment of the Boston Tea Party.

In addition to the Tea Party celebrations, Boston’s leading attractions will be on display in 2023. The Boston National Historical Park is a collection of sites that commemorate and narrate the story of the American Revolution in the city of Boston.

The park includes the Boston Common, the Massachusetts State House, the site of the Boston Tea Party, and the USS Constitution Museum, among other notable locations. Traveling the Highways & Byways with Bill Graves

Branson, Missouri and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee are both family-resort destinations, which sets the tone in both cases for what’s there. Neither caters primarily to adults, as they have no casinos or enticing bars. In fact, Pigeon Forge is a dry town. They are also in the Bible Belts of their respective regions of the country.

Branson calls itself the “the live music show capital of the world” and has for 50 years. It offers more than 100 shows, as some theaters have three performances a day. The theme here is wrapped in theAmerican Flag, so you can expect wholesome entertainment and displays of old-fashioned patriotism.

The Titanic: Tragedy and Triumph Preserved

The claim to fame of Pigeon Forge has traditionally been as a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited of our national parks. As the crowds grew over the last few decades – over nine million Park visitors annually – entrepreneurs moved in to create things for people to do here once they had seen the Park, or to give them another reason to come in the first place.

Entertainer Dolly Parton, who grew up in the Great Smokies, is the most prominent of the entrepreneurs. She created a 154-acre theme park called Dollywood. It is much like Silver Dollar City in Branson. It fact, it was originally the property of the same people who run the one in Branson and it too was called Silver Dollar City.

Both Branson and Pigeon Forge have Titanic

Museums – more like a mini-tour of the HMS Titanic. The one in Branson opened in 2006, and the

one in Pigeon Forge four years later. Both are built as half-scale replicas of the forward section of the ship and have 20 galleries displaying hundreds of artifacts.

Why here? Huge numbers of people visit these tourist meccas every year. Neither has any tie to the Titanic, as New York does, for example, being the destination of the the ill-fated ocean liner that sailed from England.

By contrast, I recall visiting the Golden Spike National Historic Site where the track for the transcontinental railroad was joined in 1869. It is in Utah, in the middle of nowhere. Someone – not the clearest thinker in our group of tourists – asked the ranger, “Why make us drive so far? Why not have the site closer to the freeway?” Obviously at a historic site, where an event happened, location is everything.

“Boarding” the ship-museums, you receive a boarding pass of an actual Titanic passenger or crew member. At the end of the self-guided tour, in the Titanic Memorial Room, you discover the fate of the person whose name you have been carrying. Displayed there are the names of the 2208 passengers and crew, along with a picture of each of the survivors and a brief note on how their lives turned out.

The ship’s Grand Staircase, in both locations, is made from the ship’s original blueprints. Hand-crafted with inlaid wood, each cost over a million dollars to build.

Those in the water froze to death; few drowned.

The only Bible known to have survived the ship’s sinking is rotated between the two Museums. It belonged to a British Minister on-board, who did not survive. He gave the Bible to his sister-in-law when she was being placed in a lifeboat.

Welcome toAmerica’s Outback.

On the starboard side of the Captain’s Bridge, in the Pigeon Forge Museum, is an “iceberg”. It’s actually a wall of ice kept frozen by refrigeration. Nearby is a pool of really cold water. I put my hand it, briefly –that simulates how the ocean felt that night.
