Designing The Future

DESIGNING THE FUTURE

Modern society requires electricity. For many years, the supply routes of electricity have been dominated by infrastructure based on lattice towers. Towers which shape originates from technology and manufacturing techniques of the early 20th century. Power grids of the future have to evolve according to current demands of transporting carbon neutral or renewable energy over significant distances to wherever it is needed.

For the past ten years Bystrup Architecture, Design and Engineering have been working intensively from a holistic approach to develop the power pylon of the future. Today the efforts of our pioneering work bear fruit. A new series of environmentally friendly, aesthetic and cost efficient power pylons has been born. We will continue our efforts to develop not just the power pylon but the entire tranmission line connecting to the future.

The impact of power lines in the landscape cannot be solved solely by well designed pylons. In order to reduce the visual disturbance it is necessary to study the anatomy of a full line and all its components: pylons, conductors, insulators, etc. Various landscapes and environments call for different solutions. A design strategy has been defined to adapt to the setting and surroundings an overhead transmission line meets. The strategy is based on a simple set of guide lines: 1. Overall height of the system 2. The structural order and alignment of the system 3. Appearance of the individual elements - the pylon’s aesthetic quality

T-PYLON

2x400kV 1ST. PRIZE IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION UNITED KINGDOM CLIENT: NATIONALGRID

The T-Pylon is a minimalistic and timeless design capable of outlasting temporary trends. Strong, steady and at the same time delicate and optimistic. It has the benefits of being shorter and sleeker than the conventional lattice tower and blends into its surroundings - a design fit for the 21st Century and beyond.

“In the T-Pylon we have a design that has the potential to be a real improvement on the steel lattice tower. It’s shorter, lighter and the simplicity of the design means it would fit into the landscape more easily. In addition, the design of the electrical components is genuinely innovative and exciting.” Nick Winser, executive director, National Grid.

DESIGN PYLON

1x400kV 1ST. PRIZE IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION DENMARK CLIENT: ENERGINET.DK

The name “Design Pylon” reflects that aesthetics was the main focus of the competition. 80 pylons have been erected in Northern Jutland, Denmark. The pylon shaft is made of hot dip galvanized steel and the lattice top is made of stainless steel tubes. The foundation is a rammed monopile. Compared to a traditional concrete gravity foundation it is highly efficient and cost-effective. The pylon has been well received by locals, who call it ”the Magic Wand”.

STEALTH PYLON 2x400kV GERMANY

The Stealth Pylon is designed to merge into the enviroment. It is clad with polished stainless steel and reflects the landscape and the sky in the ever changing light during the day and through the seasons. The reflecting surfaces mirror the surroundings to a degree where the pylon becomes the sky, and the sky becomes the pylon, while the conductors appear to be across the landscape.

COMPOSITE PYLON 2x400kV DENMARK

The Composite Pylon is made of electrically insulating composite materials. The outer shell of polymer makes the traditional glass insulators expendable, while an inner core of carbon fiber ensures the structural strength. The Composite Pylon is transported in two parts, shaft and arms, which are assembled on site.

MIRROR WALL

2X400kV 1ST. PRIZE IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION NORWAY CLIENT: STATNETT

The Mirror Wall is a piece of land art in Heia Norway. Many people visit the area to hike and experience the breathtaking scenic landscape. With a surface of mirror polished stainless steel the pylon does not interfere with nature, it reflects the landscape. The Mirror Wall celebrates nature, and will be built as a single one-of-akind pylon on a new transmission line. Surface treatments to prevent bird collisions have been developed in collaboration with ornithologists.

EAGLE PYLON

2x400kV 560 PYLONS TO BE ENERGIZED 2014 DENMARK CLIENT: ENERGINET.DK

The Eagle Pylon is designed as a shape reaching for the sky in an optimistic gesture. The body is made of weathered steel with sets of stainless steel arms supporting the insulators and conductors. The reflection of the sun and the daylight makes the arms appear light and bright against the sky. The Pylon exists in different heights and various materials.

THE STRAW 1X400kV ICELAND

Like a straw in the wind, this pole leans slightly to the side on its way across the landscape. The simple construction consists of one tilted pole, two wires to keep the pole in position and one wire to keep the conductors in place. The simple construction makes the pole flexible and able to deal with wind and snow. The warm color of the weathered steel suits the many shades of landscapes and raw nature that the power line may encounter.

TECNICAL KNOWHOW Developing the power pylon of the future means creating an object that balances aesthetic appearance and technical optimization. During the design process incredibly complex 3D geometries must be managed. Furthermore the technical demands and handling of high voltage clearances require thorough knowledge of rules, regulations and standards.

Bystrup Architecture, Design and Engineering develops designs according to all European Standards. We are capable of dimensioning all components and perform structural as well as dynamical analysis of the entire pylon. Logistics, simplicity and speed of construction are determining factors in our aim to produce competitive and economically efficient power pylons.
