There is a tradition of artists and curators staging exhibitions in unusual places. I was part of a group show – in my former guise as an artist – in an abandoned Kwik-Save in Liverpool in 1999; on a student trip to the Romanian city of Iasi in 2003 I saw the 6th Periferic Biennial (curated by Anders Kreuger), one part of which, featuring many international artists working in a range of media, was situated in a former Turkish bath house. It is to be applauded – exhibiting complex contemporary art works in an idiosyncratic setting such as an underground car park. There is – of course – a vernacular to these places, such as there was with the old Kwik-Save, and the Turkish bath house in Iasi. The latter was all crumbling walls, patches of old tile work, faded grandeur and dusty corners; the former a cavernous, dilapidated empty box of a space echoing with the ghosts of former shoppers. Both spaces were enlivened by the audacity of works of art being set within them. No concessions were made to either of these spaces – no white walls and fancy lighting rig, no suggestion of trying to turn them into a white cube gallery. This, I expect, will obviously be the case with ‘Out of Sight’. The key, or trick, however, is to make the work stand out in such surroundings, and for it to not become subsumed within the architecture of the space.


The main thrust of ‘Out of Sight’ (or should it be ‘Out of Site’?) is not only for the exhibiting artists to show their work to a hopefully appreciative public, but to also find a platform outside of the normal criteria for exhibition (i.e.: the white cube space) and to highlight their role as perceived outsiders; or, more to the point, their role as art students at the dawn of a career. But there is an unfortunate pathos at play here. With the current political climate affecting many small professional gallery spaces across the UK, with many losing Arts Council England funding (funding indirectly meted out by DCMS and government), the opportunity for young and emerging artists of the future to exhibit their work with a established gallery is slowly, but surely, being eroded away. The setting for ‘Out of Sight’ is not strictly innovative. But I have a huge amount of admiration for the Arts University College at Bournemouth and the students that are nurtured there. There is hope within this pathos; the 33 on show here embody an innovative spirit that will surely endure.

I’m still unsure if the effort in equals the gratification out, but I want to do it again and again.
