F history – In 1855, John Wesley North settled in what

would become Northfield for the great hydrologic power potential and abundant natural resources. North built a saw mill then a grist mill and a bridge. Today, MOM Brands (Malt-O-Meal) still operates a mill in the same location established by North, and Northfield is the only place in the world where its hot cereal is produced.

F The Town that Stood Tall – On September 7,

1876, the James-Younger gang rode into town, intent on robbing the First National Bank of Northfield. When the holdup was discovered by local citizens, they began to arm themselves to face down the gang. A battle ensued and lasted only seven minutes. When it was over, two robbers lay dead in the street and the remaining six outlaws fled the town. It is the extraordinary courage and independent spirit of these townspeople that is honored on the weekend after Labor Day each year during Defeat of Jesse James Days. djjd.org

Colleges From its earliest days, Northfield has been home to two outstanding liberal arts colleges. Northfield College was founded in 1866 and changed its name to honor a benefactor, William Carleton, in 1871. Today, Carleton’s enrollment is around 2,000 students. The St. Olaf School was formed in 1874. Its original purpose was to educate Norwegian immigrants and prepare them for life in the new country. Today, St. Olaf’s enrollment is approximately 3,000 students. F St. Olaf College

Located on the west edge of town atop Manitou Heights, St. Olaf’s campus offers an impressive view of Northfield and the Cannon River Valley. St. Olaf hosts many events that are of interest and open to the public, including athletic events, lectures and performing and visual arts. For visitors to Northfield, Carleton College offers many attractions, including numerous ways to enjoy the natural world. One North College St, 507-222-4000, carleton.edu • The Cowling Arboretum is open to the public year round. It is an ideal place to hike, run, ski, fish, or simply enjoy being outdoors. The upland and lowland forests along with the 150-acre prairie restoration provide excellent bird and wildlife watching. The extensive 15-mile trail system has been ranked by Runner’s Magazine as the top place to run in Minnesota and one of the top 10 in the country. In winter, trails are groomed for both classic and skate skiing. apps.carleton.edu/campus/arb • The Goodsell Observatory was built in the late 1880s and houses three telescopes that are more than 110 years old, as well as modern telescopes. Open houses are held the first Friday of every month for two hours and starting times vary based on sunset. apps.carleton.edu/campus/observatory • The Japanese Garden (Jo-ryo-en – the “Garden of Quiet Listening”) is nestled behind Watson Hall and was designed by Dr. David Slawson, who studied for two years in Kyoto with Kinsaku Nakane, one of Japan’s foremost garden designers. F Farmer’s Market at Riverside Park

Local growers offer delicious homemade and homegrown products. With a loyal following, it’s best to arrive early for the pick of the crop. The market is held every Tuesday and Friday from May through October, and every 3rd Friday year round. West 7th Street and Riverside Park from 11:45am-1pm and Saturdays from 9-11am.

F Tours – The Convention and Visitors Bureau can help plan

a group visit and tour of Northfield and the surrounding area. They can also assist with customizing a portion of an existing tour or excursion. The CVB has two very popular tours for groups to enjoy: • The Outlaw Trail – The route taken by the James-Younger Gang as they rode through the Northfield area in 1876. The tour includes historic buildings, campsites, country roads and a few little towns along the way. • Historic Sites and Points of Interest – A sampling of charming, attractive, historic buildings and interesting sites in and around the Northfield area. The CVB provides a self-guided tour brochure of both these tours. this park on foot, any season of the year. In the spring, the park is a wildflower garden, relax by Hidden Falls in the summer, autumn colors in the maple-basswood forest, one of the last extensive stands of the “Big Woods.” And when winter comes, ski or snowmobile the trails throughout the picturesque woods. 51 modern campsites: 27 electric sites and 24 non electric. 4 primitive walk-in/tent sites. F Sledding – The St. Olaf Old Main hill has been a sledding tradition in Northfield since the early 1800s; and at Carleton College, the Evans Hall hill is located at the southeast end of the Cowling Arboretum at the end of Second Street.

F Snowmobiling – The 42.5 mile Waterford Trail begins

at Sechler Park and winds through scenic forests, open fields and pastures. Based in Northfield, the Waterford Warriors Snowmobile Club members maintain about 60 miles of trails and groom about 84 miles worth. Find them on Facebook.

F Cannon River Wilderness Area – Five miles south of Northfield along  Highway 3, this park stretches across 850 acres and nearly 14 miles of wooded river valley.
