To avoid problems, always drink bottled water. Try to drink as much water as you can during the trip (at least 01 liter / 04 glasses of water per day). Because you are visiting an Andean area, don't forget to take precautions to avoid altitude sickness if you are prone to it. Be sure to try a hot tea or an infusion of coca leaves upon arrival. During your first day rest the first couple of hours, move slowly, eat lightly and avoid drinking alcohol or smoking. Peru has plenty of banking services. Main banks: BANCO DE CREDITO DEL PERU (BCP), BANCO CONTINENTAL. Bank hours: Usually from 9:00 AM to 18:00 PM - Mondays to Fridays. Some banks open on Saturdays, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (only mid day). Advice: Always ask in each city for bank names and opening hours. NOTE: Cashier points (ATM) are available in Lima and main cities. All accepted: AMERICAN EXPRESS, VISA, DINERS, others. The Peruvian currency is NUEVOS SOLES (S/.) Notes: 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 NUEVOS SOLES Advice: Always carry bills of small amounts (20 or 10 NUEVOS SOLES) Coins: 5, 2, 1 NUEVOS SOLES. Smaller change or SENCILLO also available (coins of 50, 20 or 10 cents). Coins of 1 or 5 cents are less common. Exchange rate (November 2009) USD 1 = 2.80 Soles (NUEVOS SOLES) Lima: Monday to Saturday 9:00 AM to 20:00 PM, in Miraflores shops open on Sundays. Ica: Monday to Saturdays 9:00 AM to 19:00 PM Arequipa: Monday to Saturday 9:00 – 19:00 PM, some shops open on Sundays. Puno: Monday to Saturday 9:00 – 18:00 PM. Cuzco: Monday to Saturday 9:00 – 21:00 PM, some shops open on Sundays. NOTE: Double check with local contacts in each location. Public transportation is not recommended for tourists on their own. If you wish to take a public bus or any local transport, it is better to be accompanied by a local. Be cautious against pickpockets not only for tourists on their own but also in groups. Avoid wearing jewelry or showing-off fine accessories (trendy sun glasses, costly mobile phones, etc). Purses and cameras should be kept tight.
