Mindfulness Skills for Academic Success and Test Anxiety Reduce anxiety and improve test scores. In this course, students are introduced to mindfulness as a technique for enhancing academic success and working with test anxiety which may be encountered with CSAPs, SATs, ACTs, or final exams. Recent scientific research has shown the effectiveness of mindfulness in strengthening concentration and working with stressful emotions. Students will learn and practice mindfulness over the course of four sessions so that the practices become familiar. That way, when facing stress or text anxiety, mindfulness can be an available mental tool for maintaining focus and calm. A variety of mindfulness meditation strategies will be introduced. Because practicing these techniques is essential for desired results, brief home practice assignments will be encouraged. u Rosa Bridges has practiced mindfulness meditation since 2009 and has sat 120 days of silent retreat. She has taken a number of trainings in service of facilitating secular mindfulness such as UMass Medical School Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Practicum, the Mind Body Awareness Project, and courses with the Mindsight Institute and the Ojai Foundation. Rosa has her own business, Restorative Mindfulness, LLC and will start an MSW program in 2013 focusing on mindfulness for mental health.

SAT Preparation Covering both verbal and math skills, this class will help students to maximize their performance on the SAT. The verbal review will teach students how to answer sentence completion and sentence error questions quickly and correctly when the vocabulary is familiar and how to guess effectively when much of the vocabulary is unknown. Methods for improving reading speed and techniques for locating pertinent information in reading passages will be covered. One entire class period will focus on the SAT essay. Math concepts and skills will be reviewed. Instructors will discuss different reasoning processes. Strategies for maximizing test scores will be developed through practicing on actual SAT tests. Students must spend time out of class doing assigned work to achieve the greatest benefit from this course. The course fee includes a book and a CD. Please bring a pocket folder to the first class. > Visit www.bvsd.org/LLL for meeting details

SAT Prep Small Group Intensive Does your child work better in a small group setting? Small group tutoring and individualized instruction will allow students to master tested skills in this intensive course. Students will learn the strategies best suited to each of the three SAT sub-tests (Writing, Critical Reading, and Math) and put them to work using problems drawn from real tests. For the verbal sections of the test, the emphasis is on essay-writing, passage-based reading, sentence-completion questions, and improving the structure of sentences and paragraphs. Students will complete a diagnostic test for the math portion of the SAT that will help them identify specific math topics that may need extra strengthening. There will be a comprehensive review and final preparation for the exam at the last class, targeting areas where students need the most reinforcement. Stress reduction and relaxation tips are given throughout the course, and feedback on assigned homework and practice tests will be available both online and by phone outside of class time. Class is limited to eight students. > Visit www.bvsd.org/LLL for meeting details
