Organic Vegetable Gardening for Beginners

Would you like to grow your own vegetables but don’t know where to start? In this class, you will receive step-by-step instructions from garden planning to food preservation. Beginning with soil preparation, site considerations, and growing your own seedlings, you will plan a garden customized to meet your needs. Then we will discuss planting, position, and pest management. Finally, you will learn what to harvest when and how to preserve the bounty for the winter months. Practice a holistic style of garden management that encourages diversity and returns as much to the earth as is harvested. A materials fee of $7 is payable to the instructor for comprehensive handouts. u Shere Holleman, M.Ed., has been gardening for more than 20 years. She decided to become more self-reliant by growing some of her own food two years ago and now produces hundreds of pounds of organic vegetables from her backyard garden. Shere is currently working on her Master Gardener certification. > Thu 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm / Feb 28 – Mar 14 $75 / Casey Middle / 3 sessions

Farm Shares 101 Do you enjoy fresh produce picked just hours before you take it home? Or peaches, pears, and cherries from the western slope? Would you like to eat meat raised humanely on local farms? You can get all of these products and more by joining a CSA program (also called a farm share). And you’ll get to know your farmer to boot. This class will teach you all about farm shares—how to decide if they fit your lifestyle, what to look for when selecting one, and how to handle the variety of foods that joining one will bring. You will also learn some of the risks and benefits of joining a CSA and discuss some prominent Boulder County CSAs. There will be an optional field trip (costing an additional $10) to a local CSA farm. Dan Moore has been a proponent of farm shares since he first joined one five years ago. As part of his search to find the right CSA, he built an online directory of Colorado farm shares, interviewing farmers and other CSA members, and helping others find the right local food solution. Local food and sustainability have interested him for a decade. u
