October 22 - October 28, • theweeklybuzz.es

Dear Readers

I really do hate starting my weekly note off with a moan, however the weather has been quite dismal and grey at the moment, it just doesn’t seem to end. So let me change the subject from the bad weather to something much more positive and exciting… It’s only nine weeks until Christmas! This means it is time to start planning your holiday season like fitting in all the events and when to get your shopping. For many of us living in Spain, it’s a time to see family in the UK or have guests here to enjoy what is normally a very sunny, bright and much warmer time than in the UK. With a number of Christmas events being published here in the upcoming weeks as well as some great ideas for both shopping and for your home, we are working hard to make sure that The Weekly Buzz newspaper is the best place resource for. Before we can think too much about this though we should first get our fancy dress costumes ready as it will soon be Halloween and then the November fiestas in Benidorm. This fiesta is one of the most visited events in the region and people visit Benidorm for the biggest and best fancy dress street party in Europe. The streets around the centre of Benidorm’s Rincon area are full of some of the best costumes that you have ever see in one place. If you have not had the benefit of taking part then I can only recommend that you do. There is the massive disappointment that is the World Cup Rugby, however this coming weekend promises to be interesting as a battle of the southern hemisphere. After seeing the European teams fall by the way side one-by-one with some thrilling matches it is now time to see the best of the best in action for the finals. Other great sport is listed and reviewed in the back pages for your interest too. Don’t forget it is that time of year again for the Poppy appeal so please go and get your Poppy from your local bar or visit us the Weekly Buzz in the indoor market in Benidorm or at the Heat FM radio studio in Calpe. The Weekly Buzz is open to the public in the indoor market in Benidorm at our news desk, you can come by and talk to us anytime. We have a display of business partners offering you the best products for your life here in Spain, including property rentals, insurance, money exchange and much more. Also, don’t forget that if you have any events or news you can come and tell us. If you’re a business owner you can find out exactly how we can help you to get your business ‘buzzing’ together with Heat FM and The Weekly Buzz newspaper. For those people in the north areas, you can find us at our very new Calpe offices situated in the town centre, near to Specsavers and the dry riverbed.

Happy reading and have a fantastic week. Marco - Editor - Buzz Media Press Office. FALL OF WORKER SUSPICIOUS

From Page 1... It is reported that he was on the outside of the building situated on Calle Sierra Dorada in the heart of Benidorm’s old town to remove an unwanted awning. Sources have said that he was using all the necessary safety equipment and was also used to working at high altitudes. The worker plummeted the 12 floors at around 11 am and was taken to Benidorm hospital but announced dead shortly afterwards. The circumstances are thought to be suspicious and are being investigat-

ed by police and the company CCOO that employed the man. CCOO has issued condolences to the family of the man and are working fully with the police. Many Spanish locals like having awnings or glass curtains on their outside balcony as it gives them additional space in a flat. However due to the high wind and recent rainfall, many are damaged and either being replaced or removed. It is worth noting that this should always be carried out by a trained professional.

by SPENCER WILLIAMS A new study has shown that one in five properties bought right here in Spain is purchased by a Brit, that’s higher than any other nationality! Out of all the properties sold in Spain last year, 12.7% of those were sold to foreigners planning to move to Spain in the next five year. To be exact, 19.8% of those foreign purchasers identified as British, another sign of the greatly improving house market. 2015 marks the first year since the recent fiscal crisis that property prices have actually started to rise, making it a great time to put your property on the market, or grab yourself a bargain with little to no risk. Property on the Costa Blanca is a great investment, as now starting to hold it’s value and with many people choosing to renovate their properties, you can soon increase it’s worth. Choosing a home in this region makes sense, as it’s one of the

most popular destinations for both British tourists and expats; if you’re seeking a new life in the sun and a more laid-back climate. The second and third most popular regions for buying property by foreigners was Alicante and then Valencia, which, if you’re a resident, means you’re part of a growing number. Demand from foreign buyers saw a slight fall during the first quarter of the year but has risen steadily since then. Research has suggested that this increase is not only down to the Spanish weather, culture and lifestyle, but also due to the bargains as caused by the current strong Pound to Euro rate. As reported by The Weekly Buzz, all figures are showing entry into a new phase of property prices in the area as more and more are starting to invest again, securing a brighter future for Spain.

OUTRAGE AS WEBSITE LISTS POPULAR AREAS FOR OUTDOOR SEX

by CRIS WEST A new website has caused an uproar amongst locals up and down the Costa Blanca which lists all the recommended places for having sex in your car or outdoors. Mispicaderos. net is a free to join website and allows users to input their own recommendations of where to find the best places as well as talk to people with similar interests. Points have been listed all over the area including Denia, Javea, Benissa, and Moraira as quiet secluded places for people to engage in the activities. Whilst not illegal, many locals have said the website glamourises the activity and encourages other to participate. People have also stated that due to the public nature of outdoor sex, it could be witnessed by younger people or those of a sensitive disposition. The site lists places all over ranging from parks to mountain walks, behind churches, in cemeteries and even in hospitals. Users can then add their own comments to the positions which many have seen as seedy and some contain explicit

details. Comments include “A good park for sex, frequented by people of all ages” about a park in Denia, and a cemetery in Gata is noted as “Perfect at night, remember to take lights”. One of the weirdest is regarding an unused hospital in the area and states “There is no better place to have sex than an abandoned hospital”. The practice of ‘dogging’ came to light around 5 years ago in the UK and involved people either taking part in, or watching sex happening in cars. Well this new website shows

that the practice is now fully in Spain and is causing concern. Locals have said that the website is degrading to the areas they know and love and could also bring crime to the area. They have asked for the website to be taken down however as the site is free to enter and not breaking any laws, it looks like it might be here to stay. Advertised as for ‘anyone looking for a little adventure’, Mispicaderos.net has over 11,000 places now listed in Spain and more are added everyday.

EARLY BIRD CHRISTMAS FAIR

by CRIS WEST

As the nights draw in, thoughts start to turn towards the jolly fat man and his ever-expanding list of presents. More and more people are choosing to shop local now-a-days to give the much needed money to businesses in and around the area and the Early Bird Christmas Gift Fair hosts only the best. Held at the Salones Carrasco in Javea on the 8th November, this yearly event has stalls from all different types of business. Whether you’re looking for cakes, cards, specially made paintings or any other type of handmade novelties, this event has them all. For only 1 euro entry, you can get in there nice and

early and grab all the Christmas gifts you need to keep your loved ones happy, plus it’s always nice to say they are locally sourced too! The event precedes the much bigger Christmas Fair held at the newly up for auction Denia Marriott at the end of November. Starting at 11am, you will also be able to get refreshments to ensure you don’t get hungry as you shop until you drop before closing at 5pm. All music at the event is provided by local Javea Station Total FM so you can be assured they’ll keep you in the Christmas spirit. Whatever you’re doing on Remembrance Sunday, ensure a trip to Carrasco in Javea is on the cards.

LOCAL TRAM BREAKS IT’S OWN RECORD

theweeklybuzz.es • October 22 - October 28,

By CRIS WEST

Traveling from Denia to Alicante is usually an enjoyable experience for many as rather than driving on the expensive toll road or using the overcrowded N332, many opt to use the tram. The popular tram stops in and around many coastal towns and due to its mountainside track, offers amazing views and death defying drops along the way. Used by locals and tourist alike, the tram and it’s low cost fairs has proven very popular over the last few years, however as we reported last week, a part of the track needs to be fixed which has caused the tram to break a new record for being at it’s slowest.

take 6 months and means the passengers have to disembark the tram, wait for a free shuttle bus to the next station and then complete their journey. There is also now a speed reduction in place due to the low quality of the lines, which has stretched the journey even longer. A recent experiment on the journey found that travelling at popular times (early morning and late at night) could see a fourhour journey due to the amount of people using the service to get them to

and from work. Using the service out of these popular times is said to take just over 3 hours. Due to the track and station changes, the shuttle bus has been provided however due to the length of it’s journey, is often delayed at picking people up. The tram company recently came under fire as a new legislation stated that bikes would continue to be allowed on the trams despite numerous complaints, however pets, in particularly dogs, would no longer be allowed on the tram for health and safety reasons.

The journey of just 94 kilometers was originally supposed to be completed in less than an hour, however now takes around four hours from start to finish. This is down to the work interruption between the Calpe and Altea stops which is estimated to

How to help visitors with mental health needs

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office Press Release The Foreign Office is offering detailed advice to British citizens living in Spain on how to prepare for visits by friends or family members who have mental health issues. The advice stems from a joint campaign with the UK’s Mental Health Foundation that aims to raise awareness of how British nationals with mental health needs can prepare before travelling overseas, and is part of World Mental Health Day on 10 October. British Consulates in Spain handled 67 cases involving mental health needs in 2014/15. Will Middleton, Consular Regional Director for Spain, said: “Staff at our consulates in Spain are seeing more cases involving mental health. A deterioration in mental health whilst visiting a foreign country can cause considerable distress, both to the person concerned and to family and friends in Spain, as well as back in the UK. “So if you have a guest who has mental health needs, do take some simple steps to help ensure their visit is trouble-free and enjoyable for all concerned.” If you are hosting a friend or family member with a mental health condition, you can:

· Ask if your visitor has taken out travel insurance and whether the policy covers any pre-existing mental health conditions, and has a valid European Health Insurance Card (visit www.ehic.org.uk for more information) · If the visitor is on medication, check what they are taking and the normal dosage, and ask them to bring enough for their visit plus some extra to cover any unexpected delays · Whilst they are with you, encourage your visitor to continue to take their medication even if – as sometimes happens – they are feeling better because they are on holiday · Be aware that English language help for people with mental health issues may be limited in your area and that the approach of health authorities may be different to the UK. You may want to find out what support is available locally, in case you need it · Consider who you would contact if your guest’s mental health deteriorates while in Spain, and ensure you can contact them in an emergency · Make sure your own passport is valid and in a safe place, in case you need to travel in an emergency.

Jenny Edwards, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said: “Many people in the UK with mental health conditions manage them well day to day. However, there are a few extra things to consider when travelling abroad. Check your travel insurance covers pre-existing mental health conditions before travelling and make sure that your medication is legal, available, and sufficient for your trip. “Changes to your itinerary or a delayed flight could impact your mental health needs so it is important to travel prepared – pack medication in your hand luggage and keep a record of your mental health contacts in the UK in case you need to reach them. Research your travel destination and locate the local mental health services for that country. By following these simple steps, a relaxing trip can be easily enjoyed.” For more information about foreign travel and mental health, visit www.gov.uk/fco/ mental-health-abroad. “The Day of the Dead in Mexico,” is a public exhibition, which will continue until November 3rd, at the Casa de Cultura of L’Alfas del Pi (House of Culture). Victor Manuel Zayas and Martin Sanchez, two Mexicans citizens, residing in Alfaz for over ten years, are the organizers of the exhibition which opened this weekend with councillors Vicenta Baldo, Isabel Muñoz and Luis Miguel Morant in attendance. As well as the exhibition, on the 2nd of November, one of the events organised for this festival will be a children’s film screening also be hosted in the House of Culture and will show the funny children’s film, “The Book of Life”, at 17.30. Mexico’s Day of the Dead festival is one of the most important events in Mexican culture. The day might sound a little morbid but it’s actually a very beautiful

and complicated event. If you live in Mexico, the 1st and 2nd of November is all about honouring the dead with food, flowers and candles whilst every participates in parades wearing decorative masks, eating sugar skulls and enjoying the dancing skeletons. It’s also a time for reflection for those for those who have recently lost a loved one, or a time of demonstration for groups with a political agenda raising awareness about tragic events. Day of the Dead festivities are spread out over two days – the Dia de los Angelitos on 1st November dedicated to souls of children who have passed away, and Dia de Los Muertos on 2nd November dedicated to spirits of the dead adult. The main celebrations including parades and communion meals will typically occur on the latter day of the festival, of which a large portion is held in local cemeter-

ies.

MOTORCYTCLE CHECKS AFTER NOISE COMPLAINTS

by SPENCER WILLIAMS

Altea’s residents have had enough of the noise that some motorcycles and scooters are making and are doing something about it. To overcome the issue, residents have presented their complaints to the local police who have acknowledged the problem by starting a campaign on Monday 19th to help reduce the noise from these vehicles which will last until Sunday 25th October. The Councillor for Cit-

izen Security and Traffic, Vicent Ripoll explained that the campaign will monitor vehicles during the given period for excessive noise and analyse the state of exhaust pipes. As well as helping to resolve these issues, the police will also use this opportunity to check that riders are wearing helmets, and ensure all motorcycles or scooters their valid ITV and that it’s in date.

BENIDORM MUSIC FESTIVAL

by CRIS WEST

The planned Iberia music festival finally got to happen on Monday this week after the first was cancelled due to bad weather. The event dubbed ‘2.0’ was said to be back bigger and better than originally planned and featured many famous Spanish artists. The original date for the festival was on September 5th but due to the high-unexpected rainfall, the whole area flooded and had to be postponed. However the weather was in their favour and soon the music was playing at the rock themed festival this week. The three main bands were La Union, Los Toreros Muertos and Rosen-

do who whipped the crowd into a frenzy. The event started just after 8 and even the clouds couldn’t turn people away. However as the heavens opened, the bands unfortunately had to stop for an hour as the equipment and stage was getting wet and the safety team dubbed it too dangerous. Once the rain subsided, the bands came back on and the attendees were soon dancing again. The band of the night was Los Toreros Muertos who’s lead singer Pablo Carbonell was on top form at entertaining the crowds. Alicante based band ‘Motor City’ ended the show and sang “Wolf Man in Paris’ which hit topped the Spanish charts in 1984 and judging by the crowds reaction, proved very popular. Event organiser Javier Ferrandiz said the day was a great success and due to its popularity, they are already starting to organise an Iberia festival for 2016. “We want our fans to be happy and we try not to disappoint them” Ferrandiz commented and he also said that the postponing of the event couldn’t have been helped, but luckily it didn’t stop the people from attending.

LEVANTE PROMENADE Clubs & Charities REOPENED AFTER FIRE ‘S T E P P I

by BOB OXLEY - PRESS OFFICER

Benidorm City Council finally reopened the Levante promenade opposite the hotel Selomar to traffic on Tuesday 20th October after the hotel suffered from a fire on October 4th as reported in The Weekly Buzz. Municipal technicians reported that they were able to allow traffic on the promenade after finding that the owners of the hotel establishment had removed all elements that could fall into the street. The owners of the hotel have now released a statement to the media stating

that two days before a fire, several of the owners had visited the property accompanied by people who were interested in purchasing it and that there were no indications of squatters or suspicious activity at that point. In the same statement, they ensure that the property has been visited regularly by the owners, as well as technicians to ensure that the place is safe. In all these visits, they said they never found any evidence that there might be people squatting there.

At the recent regular meeting of ‘Stepping Stones’, a member of the group asked if he could share a quote based on Henri J M Nouwen’s book, ‘Out of Solitude’, which he felt was an apt description of the empathy and sympathetic understanding of the Listeners 24 hour Helpline and it’s Bereavement/Loss group. “When we honestly ask ourselves which persons in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief

and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing or not healing, but face with us the reality of our powerlessness. That is a person who cares”. ‘Stepping Stones’ meets once a month with a support team from the ‘Listeners’. For dates, venues and any other enquiries, contact the dedicated ‘phone line 634 362 498. This is an initiative from the ‘Listeners’ Registered Charity, which has dealt with a number of such challenges through it’s 24 hr Helpline, 965 99 66 78. As with the Helpline, there is no necessity to reveal any personal details, and all conversations are conducted in an atmosphere of understanding and agreed confidentiality.

TOWN HALL ALLOCATES MONEY FOR PENYAL D’IFAC

Calpe town hall have finally managed to settle the on-going issue of the repair works for the Penyal d’Ifac by allocating enough funds for the maintenance in the 2016 budget. The repair works are needed for the reopening of the top of the Natural Park of the Penyal d’Ifac in Calpe, which was closed by the regional administration at the beginning

of the summer season in June. The plans were finally put into place after representatives from the two political parties who operate the council of Calpe (the town hall have been in a coalition since the local elections) held a meeting. In this meeting they agreed that the works needed to be carried out on the access path to the top of Penyal will be developed in phases, and

on completion will allow residents and visitors to climb to the summit again, ensuring the safety of hikers in the Natural Park which is one of towns greatest assets. The closure sparked

numerous complaints among the town’s residents and visitors; although the path was closed and fenced off, people still risked their safety to access the summit.

Teenager electrocuted while taking selfie on roof of train

by SPENCER WILLIAMS A 14-year-old boy was given a serious electric shock after hitting cables while attempting to take a ‘selfie’ on the track of a commuter train outside Barcelona. The youth, who has not been named, was knocked unconscious from the shock on Friday evening and is being treated in Barcelona’s Sant Pau hospital. The Mossos d’Esquadra

said on Monday that the teenager had climbed onto the roof of the train at Rubí station, a town north of Barcelona at 6.20 pm on Friday when his head came into contact with the cable. It isn’t the first time the quest for a daredevil ‘selfie’ has resulted in serious injury. In March 2014, a 21-year-old man died after touching a high voltage wire when he and his friends clambered on

top of a parked train to take photos of themselves. Last November a Polish student on an Erasmus exchange programme died after falling seven metres while attempting to take a photograph of herself in front of Seville’s iconic Triana bridge. In August a man was gored

to death during a bull run while filming the festivities on his mobile phone.

Rio Seco Clean up Complete

by SPENCER WILLIAMS

The second stage of the cleaning of the Rio Seco, which corresponds to the river from the bridge ‘Sant Bartolomeu’ to the sea, have been successfully completed after being delayed by the Moors and Christians festival. This completes the cleaning of the river which began with the first stretch in late September when the Department of Environment began cleaning from the Tram bridge to the bridge of Sant Bartolomeu. The mayor of the town’s environment expects this operation will reduce the risk

of flooding and finally slow the plague of mosquitoes that are in the area, which is affecting the residents of El Campello.

U3A VALL DEL POP VISIT BIO PARC IN VALENCIA

by CAROL LOCKHART - Press Officer

On 15th October a group of 55 U3A members enjoyed a fabulous outing on a lovely sunny autumn day, when we visited the Bio Parc Zoo experience in the centre of Valencia City. Slightly surreal, arriving in the midst of Valencia’s traffic and minutes after passing a LIDL store, to be walking across a modern tubular bridge into another world completely. The stunning layout and natural settings for the animals from diverse areas, Wetlands, Savannah, Equatorial, Madagascar and additional attractions, made an educational and enjoyable stroll through “their worlds”. The impressive settings, trees, boulders, rocks, water features all cleverly designed to duplicate their natural territories with spacious compounds and natural barriers ingeniously allowing maximum close up vision of the animals. Colourful birds and lemurs roamed free, neither people nor camera shy. However, we were reminded that we were indeed amongst wild animals. The magnificent

male lion started a series of deep throated roars that reverberated around the Parc, blood chilling even in the bright mid-day sun; nobody was arguing that he was King of the Hill surveying his harem of lionesses from the top of a pile of boulders. As we progressed around the Parc, we heard him again and again, so too did the nearby small deer and other animals that normally would have been his prey but protected, as we were, by the those same natural barriers designed to allow the best viewing experience for us, but to ensure they stayed within their designated areas. Later another chilling moment, when one of the large apes threw his weight around, literally, starting with a rising crescendo of screeching that saw his companions moving swiftly away, giving him plenty of space. Whatever set him off we don’t know, maybe another male within the internal enclosure, but he hit that high metal sliding door with all his might and even from the opposite end of the area, the eager line of camera pointing onlookers, including us, took a sharp step backward.

These experiences certainly added to an already special day and we were all very impressed with the whole concept. The animals all looked healthy and with loads of interesting spaces in which to move around, and were, of course, the stars of the day. Ten out of Ten to Angela and the TCET team for organising a memorable day,

to Irene for raising 100 euros with the hand-knitted poppies from the U3A travellers on the coach, a punctual, comfortable coach journey and to Valencia City for putting together such a well-planned attraction, which opened in 2008. Anyone visiting Valencia the Bio Parc is a ‘must see’ place and should be top of the list to visit.

MORE SPACE FOR WEEKLY CRAFT FAIR IN JÁVEA STARTS THE MARINA ONCE AGAIN

by CRIS WEST

Work has now started on the new marina Nou Fontana in Javea to make space for an additional 300 boats in the popular coastal town. The additional marina, commissioned by Javea council is being carried out by the company Santacreu and aims to allow more space to dock smaller boats. The port situated nearby is currently full and has a waiting list of people who want to dock their sea vessels here, so it’s hoped the new work will allow more people to make use of the space. Situated on river Gorgos in the Arenal area of Javea, the commission was initially given a quick turnaround time however in the first week of work they have already hit unforeseen delays. The first round of work includes dredging the water of all obstacles, which unexpectedly contained car tires of different

sizes. However the main bulk of the work consisted of removing an as yet unidentified substance described by one worker as ‘black sludge. The sludge, said to be extremely smelly will need to be fully removed before work can continue and the 300-berth space opened before the summer of 2016. The team still has to remove mooring lines from previous boats as well as sunken vessels that are currently taking up space in the water. They also have to repair the docking area, add emergency lifelines alongside the water, and place solar lighting beside the route of the canal. The team has also been commissioned to add a new underpass for the traffic to use which will make it easier to enter the water area. Reservations are already being taken for space, please visit www.marinafontana.es to book yours.

by CRIS WEST From 31 October onwards, the good burghers of Jávea can once again enjoy visiting a small but attractive craft market every week. This time not only on Saturday mornings in the square of the Post Office (Plaza Marina Alta) in the old town, but also every Sunday morning on the sea front near the harbour (at the end of the Avenida Jaime I). Most of the people on the stalls are old regulars; for the last three years they have come every evening to the summer fair in de port, and from January till June this year they were to be seen every Saturday morning in the square in front of the Post office. Just a few weeks ago, from 9 till 12 October, they took part in the festival La Mar de Tapas. Jávea is beginning to be very artistic! This autumn between 10 and 15 stalls will set up in both places to sell work made by hand by the people on the stalls. That’s what Artesanía de Autor means real craftwork made by dedicated people. Walk by the stalls, look at the work and talk to the people who spend their week working at their craft. Leather, silk, bone, wood, clay, paper - all are used to make handbags, hair pins, jewelry, toys, lamps and many other delightful and original items. Some practical, others just decorative. Think of this craft market as an art gallery in the street, with each artist at his stall. This is where you can buy items which you will never see in a shop, items made with the love and attention to detail which is so often missing from mass-produced goods.

Every week the group will be a little different. Some of the people will travel to other parts of Spain for a weekend fair elsewhere, while others cannot make enough goods in one week to replace what they sell. All participants bring their tools along, ready to make small alterations or accept special orders that can be made on the spot, or prepared to be picked up in a week’s or two week’s time. A list of people at any given weekend will be posted on www.amata.es (in English and Spanish). At http://www.amata.es/ JaveaPuerto%2015.html you can take a look at the type and quality of goods in the fair in the Puerto this October. The fair at the post office is there every Saturday from the 31st of October and opens from 11 am till 2 pm; in the port the stalls set up from the 1st of November, every Sunday from 11 am (winter time!!); they will stay open till about 3 or 4 pm, because many people like to stroll along the sea front before or after their Sunday lunch in one of the many restaurants in this lively part of town. VAUXHALL VIVA 2015

The original Vauxhall Viva was launched back in 1963 and proved an instant hit due to its good value and practical nature. Now, after more than half a century, the Viva name is back as a city car, but remains true to its forbearer’s values by focusing on low running costs and practicality. The Viva is at its best in an urban environment, with its diminutive size and three-cylinder engine making it easy to drive and park in town. The Viva is offered with just one engine - a 1.0-litre petrol with 75PS - which is economical and competent at low speeds, returning up to 65.7mpg and emitting less than 100g/km of CO2 when specified in ecoFlex trim. All models are well-equipped and even basic models get cruise control, heated door mirrors, front fog lights, lane departure warning and hill start assist. However, air conditioning and Bluetooth aren’t included and the interior also feels rather cheap due to a thick layer of scratchy and dull plastics.

The range-topping SL models do add automatic air conditioning, a leather covered steering wheel and alloys, but even with these extras, the Viva rarely detracts from its low-cost appearance. The cabin is practical though, with space for four adults and lots of airy comfort. The ride is also good, with soft suspension and low levels of road noise. Admittedly, the boot is on the small size - it’s just 200 litres - but it’s sufficient for the weekly shop or a couple of small suitcases. One area that does let the Vauxhall Viva down is its lack of ‘big car’ feel at higher speeds. The Viva’s 1.0-litre engine isn’t bad, but it is painfully slow and will often leave the driver changing down a gear or two to cope with small hills. Both the Hyundai i10 and Skoda Citigo feel more composed above 50mph and are also more fun behind the wheel, with better mid-range acceleration. It’s difficult to deny the Viva’s value though, especially when you factor its low running cost and impressive equipment levels. However, even considering that, the Viva still feels decidedly average, especially when you compare it to the current crop of city cars that focus on fun and style - both of which are lacking in the Vauxhall Viva.

BENIDORMS ITALIAN JOB

The EL ITALIANO RESTAURANT IN BENIDOM is conveniently located close to the Town Hall near to McDonalds at the Plaza Del Hisplanidad. A great location to spend time browsing the many local shops and then relax for an amazing lunch or dinner Italian style, with a feast of the best pasta and pizza in the Costa Blanca. So if you like to eat Italian, then you will absolutely love this place as it offers real home made authentic cooking and mummy’s own traditional recipes.

Meet Vincenzo, Davide and the team and experience their amazing hospitality with the ambiance of this very popular eating spot in the heart of Benidorm Old Town. Pizza and pasta are the speciality of the house with a menu that also offers great fish and meat dishes. So if you fancy a juicy steak or a tender and moist fillet of salmon, you are visiting the right place. You will find a menu at El Italiano that offers something for everyone. Fish being a favourite dish in Spain, the variety is vast and includes Sole, Swordfish, Salmon and a Special Dish of the Day. One of my favourite pasta dishes is Spaghetti Carbonara. The problem when eating out in restaurants is that unless you know the method of cooking and what the ingredients are, you are often faced with a dish that simply does not live up to expectations. Carbonara sauce can be made so many different ways, but the correct ingredients are pancetta, egg, onion, cream and Parmesan cheese. To my delight this is exactly how the chefs at El Italiano prepare Carbonara, and the richness of the cheesy cream sauce was probably amongst the best I have ever tasted anywhere. My problem is when I visit I can’t just have pasta... I

have to have a Pizza to share as well, accompanied by a smooth full bodied red wine that on this occasion was chosen by Davide. Without knowing the cost I told him that I wanted to try something different, as I normally always go for the house wine. Not only did he choose a wine that absolutely blew me away as far as taste and quality, the real surprise was the price! Amazing value and the best quality I have had in ages... what more can you ask for when dining out? Great food in a buzzing establishment full of atmosphere with wine to die for! And the wine is a secret, so unless to visit and ask Davide what it was he chose for me then you will not find out.... It is the best kept secret in Old Town Benidorm.

ADELE - 25 NOVEMBER 20TH At this point, anticipation for Adele’s third studio album 25 couldn’t be more palpable. Amazon had 100,000 requests for the album on its store before recording had even began. Fans have been teased about the record for well over three years now, ever since the multi-million-selling 21 dominated charts and award ceremonies across the world back in 2011 and 2012, so here’s everything you need to know about the biggest album yet to be released. “Bye bye 25... See you again later in the year,” Adele tweeted last year, causing everyone to believe the album would be on shelves by the end of 2014 and basically confirming it would be called 25. Adele’s label XL Recordings were quick to deny any plans for a new album campaign that year, though, and reports surfaced that she was still working to get the record completely perfect. She’s since confirmed the record will be called 25, and that it’s about “getting to know who I’ve become without realising”. In April 2015, confidential emails from Sony appeared online detailing that Adele’s new album was scheduled for release in late 2014, but was pushed back. Frequent collaborator Ryan Tedder explained that Adele is facing no pressure to get an album out. “She will deliver the album on her own timetable, at her own

pace, and the only person that will ever declare it finished will be her, when she decides it’s finished.” The latest report, from Billboard, claims the album is coming next month, with further insiders telling us to circle November 20 on the calendar. And Adele’s fellow artists have taken note. British producer Naughty Boy said earlier this year: “Adele’s album is coming and labels have cleared their schedules because they know it’s going to wipe out the competition! The star has been in the studio with Pharrell Williams who described her as a “masterful writer”, despite only getting a brief amount of time with her due to her personal commitments as a mother. She has also been recording with aq number of other artists such as Ryan Tedder and Diane Warren, we will just have to wait and see what she uses in her album!

CHRIS ROCK TO HOST OSCARS 2016

Chris Rock is officially hosting the 2016 Oscars. After a flurry of rumours, the comedian has confirmed he will anchor the 88th Academy Awards next February. He appears to sailing this ship alone, which contradicts previous reports that producers were looking for another duo. The actor added in a statement: ‘I’m so glad to be hosting the Oscars. It’s great to be back.’ Academy President Cheryl Boone Issacs said: ‘He is certain to bring his amazing array of talents to this year’s show.’ And he’s got a great seal of approval from last year’s host Neil Patrick Harris. Chris has hosted the Academy Awards before in 2005, where he spent part of his opening monologue ripping on George Bush. The best film award that year was won by Million Dollar Baby.

The Best Natural Blood Thinners

If you have high blood pressure, then you may be prescribed blood thinners by your doctor. These decrease the viscosity of the blood slightly, thereby enabling it to pass more easily through your blood vessels while placing a little less strain on the heart. Moreover, it can help to prevent pulmonary embolism, thrombosis, heart disease or stroke. Popular blood thinners include Coumadin and Plavix, while Aspirin can also be used in this manner. But if you’re not at risk of any of these conditions, then using a prescription blood thinner or even aspirin can lead to a number of side effects. Among other things, this can cause dizziness, menstrual bleeding, headaches and stomach pain.

A milder approach then that can improve your blood pressure without causing side effects, is to use the various ingredients that are available naturally in our diet and which can help to thin the blood. Note however, that you should always consult with your doctor before attempting to self-medicate – even with natural ingredients. Otherwise, you might risk an interaction with other medication, or if you stop your prescription, you may still be at risk of the aforementioned conditions. Your doctor would not prescribe blood thinners unless the situation was urgent.

Popular Natural Blood Thinners Turmeric Turmeric is a spice often used in curries. It contains curcumin which acts as an antiplatelet. Ginger Ginger is actually part of the same family as turmeric and contains salicylate, an acid that is in a number of plants. Some studies link a derivative of this component, acetyl salicylic acid, to stroke prevention (1) though more research needs to be done. Avocados Avocados also contain the all-important salicylate. They’re also rich in saturated fats but this has been shown to increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) and not LDL cholesterol – despite what we formerly believed. Nuts Vitamin E can also act to combat clotting and is found in good quantities in nuts and several other fibrous foods. As insoluble fiber is also good for combating cholesterol, this is likely a good choice for combating high blood pressure. Garlic Garlic is not actually a blood thinner but rather a potent vasodilator. This means it widens the blood vessels and thereby allows blood to pass through more easily and again reduces the blood pressure. This is an alternate approach to combating high blood pressure through natural ingredients in the diet.

Why You May Want to Try a Gluten-Free Diet

Gluten may be one of the more difficult foods to avoid, as it is such a ubiquitous part of the Western diet. When you think that gluten is found in most bread, pasta, bagels, breakfast cereal and baked goods, it’s not surprising that finding foods that are gluten-free can be tricky. Most processed foods contain some level of gluten, and even beverages such as beer have it (from the fermented barley). Nevertheless, for an increasing number of people, going gluten-free may be worth the effort.

Gluten Intolerance on the Rise

What Is Celiac Disease?

Not to be confused with a wheat allergy, which is mostly found in children and is caused by an allergy to wheat protein, celiac disease is currently among the most prevalent chronic diseases that affect countries in the West, particularly those who are of European descent. The disease is due to a gluten allergy, which is a protein that can be found in certain grains, most commonly wheat, rye and barley. The allergic reaction damages small intestine’s lining, which keeps it from being able to absorb nutrients. Whereas you may not have full-blown celiac disease (in which you have an autoimmune reaction to gluten and increased intestinal permeability), you may be gluten sensitive, a state in which your digestive system reacts badly to gluten, causing such unpleasant symptoms as diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain. It may also cause symptoms that are seemingly unrelated, such as aching muscles and joints, headaches, depression, irritability and rashes.

Reasons to Try a Gluten-Free Diet

Interestingly, the majority of those following a gluten-free diet are not actually gluten-sensitive. Some people feel that cutting out gluten provides them with more energy and helps in losing weight. Researchers believe that the damage wheat products cause is due to the way

the grain has changed over the past decades. Modern wheat has been bred to be shorter and sturdier than the variety grown during our grandparents’ day, but its gluten content has also increased. As so much of the gluten we get in our diet originates from processed foods high in refined flour, cutting these alone out of your diet can contribute to improved health and weight loss. Untreated gluten intolerance can lead to more serious problems such as celiac disease, infertility, osteoporosis and cancer, so be sure to get checked if you think you may have it. If this is the case, you can ask your doctor to have a gluten tolerance test done. However, be sure to have the test done before beginning any gluten-free diet, as if you wait until after the diet has begun, the doctor will not be able to be certain of a diagnosis, as the antibodies indicating gluten sensitivity will no longer be in your bloodstream. Following a gluten-free diet may take some advance planning, but it is easier than you may think. More and more products are coming out every day that are gluten-free, and many restaurants now feature gluten-free items on their menu. When cooking at home, try to eat the foods featured in the Mediterranean Diet, including vegetables, poultry and fish, lean meat, beans, nuts, fruit and olive oil. Foods such as potatoes, rice, corn and quinoa can also be eaten and form the basis of many tasty dishes.

PUZZLE ANSWERS

Although the number of people who appear to be sensitive to gluten is increasing, it is not only the gluten-intolerant that are flocking to a gluten-free diet. Some people believe it makes them feel better, others believe it will help them lose weight, and some are convinced they are gluten-sensitive, even though diagnostic tests have shown otherwise. It is estimated that Americans will spend approximately $7 billion this year alone on gluten-free products, and only half of those people will have a true sensitivity to gluten. Twenty years ago in the US, celiac disease was believed to be a relatively rare condition, as it affected only approximately 1 person in 2,500. Rates in Europe at that time were higher, at approximately 1 in every 300 people, a phenomenon that scientists could not explain. It is now believed that the lower rates in the US were due to an underdiagnosis of the problem. However, not only has there has been a steep increase in the rate of celiac disease diagnosis (with estimates of it affecting approximately 1 in 130 Americans), due to increasing awareness of the condition, but it also

appears that people have indeed become more gluten sensitive since the 1950s. Dr, Joseph Murray and fellow researchers from the Mayo Clinic compared blood samples of people from the 1950s with those of today and found that there has been a fourfold increase in cases of gluten sensitivity over the past 60 years.

Klopp blasts FA Over Rossiter

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has accused the Football Association of mishandling Jordan Rossiter after the teenage midfielder returned injured from England duty. Rossiter, 18, suffered a hamstring problem after playing three matches in five days for England’s U19 side. It was an incident reminiscent of last season when former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers clashed with Roy Hodgson after Daniel Sturridge sustained a thigh injury during an England training session the day after a match. And Klopp echoed his predecessor when questioning the way players are handled when on international duty. “I never heard of an 18-year-old playing three games in five days,” Klopp said. “That is the problem why he is injured and I don’t think he will be ready until the next international break. I don’t know who I have to talk about this but I will find a way because it is not okay. “On my first day I didn’t want to have a call with someone with the FA but for sure this is not okay..

Eubank Jr warns O’Sullivan

hris Eubank Jr has hit back at Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan by questioning whether the Irishman truly wants to fight him. he WBA interim middleweight champion makes his Sky Sports bow on Saturday when he faces America’s Tony Jeter, but has already secured a clash with O’Sullivan (22-1-KO15), scheduled for December 12.

O’Sullivan lashed out at Eubank Jr on Tuesday - dubbing the Brighton fighter “arrogant” - and the animosity between the pair is set to reach a crescendo with Eubank Jr (19-1-KO14) mounting his own verbal assaults. Eubank Jr, 26, told Sky Sports: “Spike O’Sullivan has a very good record and a very big mouth. The fight will happen on December 12 and

he’s going to get everything that he’s been asking for over the last two or three years. ”He’s been stalking me online so he gets to put his money where his mouth is on December 12. That’s the fight the public want to see this year. He’s been talking a lot of smack over the last few years and now he’s got his chance to back up the talk.

Obviously, it’s all about the culture, isn’t it? Well, the culture, the firmer pitches and the weather. It’s a climate thing, really. players dry at the expense of the international game. There you go. Twelve hundred words they wanted and I’m done and dusted in a hundred and ten. And those are just the rugby reasons. That’s before you even stop to consider that - maybe - the southern hemisphere’s superiority stems from the fact that their doings disappear down the drain in a different direction to ours. Not forgetting, of course, that the World Cup always falls slap bang in the middle of their Vernal Equinox and if trying to play Argentina in the middle of a Vernal Equinox doesn’t leave you at a clear disadvantage, then what does? In fact if you add it all up, it’s astonishing that the Irish got peppered by only twenty-three.
