OUT AND ABOUT

Dear Readers

Happy Easter readers! The sun is shining and we can see the first real sign of things to come with the beaches looking their best, with the sun beds and parasols out and people enjoying the simplicity of being outdoors. For relaxing, playing games and more, the beach is a place for the whole family without spending a penny.

Easter holidays can be enjoyed in so many ways, so whatever it is you are doing send us a text or email , even a photo and we will feature this in an article next week. Maybe a trip to Terra Natura to see the amazing wildlife a great place to entertain the children.

For me a walk to the Albir lighthouse kick starts the day. A great way to exercise and enjoy the stunning views, not to mention keeping my dog happy. The walk takes around 45 minutes and is extremely popular for many joggers and fitness enthusiasts, as well as hundreds of daily tourists and locals walking for relaxation.

Enjoy the long Easter weekend. What an ideal start to the month of April, plus the longer daylight hours make the evenings more pleasant. I hope you enjoy the extra pages in this week’s Buzz, including puzzles, TV choice and a five page dedicated sports section, with this weekends top fixtures and features.

From Front Page...Second came visitors from Germany, who spent a total of €911 million during the first two months of this year. Third place for international spending in Spain went to Scandinavian visitors, who spent €846 million while visitors from France spent €641 million.

The results are linked to both the strong pound offering the best exchange rates against the Euro for seven years together with the growing economy in the UK with zero inflation allowing the general public to be in a position to afford more. The economy grew at a faster pace than initially estimated by 0.6% in the final three months of 2014. Previous estimates have indicated the economy grew by 0.5% and the unexpected increase means that growth for the year was 2.8%, higher than the earlier estimate of 2.6%. The rate marks the highest pace of annual growth since 2006, when the economy grew by 3%. An expansion in production and services as well as household spending helped to drive the increase but the biggest contribution to the revised figure was surprisingly a strong perform-

ance of UK exports. In a separate report issued said that consumer confidence in March has hit the best level in 12 Years. Visitors to Spain and ex-pats living from their UK income are much better off with a high above 1.38 against the Euro (EUR), making a 2% recovery since the end of last week.

the alfaz del Pi town Hall has included an amount of €6,000 in the budgets for 2015 for a sterilization plan for stray cats launched by the Health Department in cooperation with the four veterinary clinics in the town. Head of Health Department, Vicenta Baldo, explained, “it is a measure with the aim of palliating the overpopulation of stray cats and help them”.

The method of capturing, sterilizing and letting them free is the only one which has been effective in the control of the stray cat

population. “This method involves capturing all cats or most of the same colony, sterilizing them and bringing them back to their territory”, added Videnta Baldo. The captured cats are marked to identify them as havnig been sterilized. The veterinary clinics cooperating in this campaign are ‘Hospital de dia Vetersalud La Creu’, ‘Hospital Veterinario Marina Baixa’, ‘Clinica Playalbir’ and ‘Clinica El Valle’. By Fred archer

MURDERED BRITISH COUPLE COVERED IN RAINCOAT NEWS

A murder investigation is now underway after a British couple were found shot dead in their villa in the village of Jalon. Peter Tarsey a former Olympic diver and retired engineer and his wife Jean both aged 77, were found last Sunday at around 4pm in each other's arms after dinner guests alerted police. The couple had not been seen for several days.

Police had reported that they were had both been shot dead by a small calibre gun and that various gunshots had been fired." The Guardia Civil said post-mortem examinations have not yet been completed, but they are believed to have been killed in the last few days.

The couple, who have been residents in Spain for 18 years, had no known criminal history and "had not been doing anything strange", according to police officers said there was no sign of forced entry and the case is being treated as homicide. A TV was found to be missing in the property and a computer had been thrown into the swimming pool. The couple had a safe in their home containing valuables which was locked when Police arrived but the Spanish press reports the safe showed signs of tampering. A locksmith has now examined the safe and confirmed that the lock had been drilled several times in an unsuccessful attempt to break into it. The reports say that there was only docu-

“We knew it must be them but Eduardo wanted to make sure, so he pulled the coat back just to check. “They were in each other’s arms like he was protecting her. I really don’t want to think about it as it’s so upsetting.

Eduardo told the paper he had known the Tarsey’s for 40 years, and added: “They were very good people, humble, friendly and not ostentatious.

The gardener, who was interviewed by police at the scene, said the couple were "charming and normal," without enemies. A friend said: "Jean did a lot of work for local charities, including one looking after abandoned dogs. She also did a lot of Reiki healing for her friends in the area."

Their villa, with its private pool and mountain views, was currently for sale with local agents for €260,000 and had been a target for burglars in the past. The couple were hoping to move to Mallorca to be closer to one of their grown-up sons.

Two friends Ann and Eduardo found the couple in their home. Covered all but their

FAMILY OF FOUR FOUND DEAD IN GIBRALTAR NEWS

April 2nd – April 14th 2015

A British man, plus a woman believed to be his Spanish wife and his 2 children have been found stabbed to death in Gibraltar.

A murder investigation is underway but police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths. Two UK Home Office pathologists will be flying out to Gibraltar this week.

The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the country. The government statement released on Monday said: "A peaceful society like the one we enjoy in Gibraltar will be hard-pressed to come to terms with such a horrendous tragedy." Chief Minister, Fabien Picard, said "As a husband and father, I - like no doubt all Gibraltarians and residents of Gibraltar - am in total shock to hear about this terrible crime."

The family, whose bodies were discovered in a rented flat, had only been in Gibraltar for a few days, according to local reports.

The name of the Liverpool man, found dead at Boschetti's Steps, will be withheld until his relatives arrive in Gibraltar.

The bodies of the two children were removed from the crime scene as investigators continued to search for clues. The bodies of the two adults will remain in the flat ahead of the arrival of the pathologists from London.

COSTA COFFEE COMING TO SPAIN

Over the past five years, Costa Coffee has grown rapidly, opening on average 150 international stores every year.

The expansion into Spain sees Costa enter into two new regional franchise agreements with Sandpiper Iberia and The Coffee Company Spain Limited, adding to their current Airport partner, Airfoods. The first Costa Coffee store outside of the airports will open in Malaga within the next two months.

Andy Marshall, Managing Director of Costa Coffee International Franchise commented “Costa is a truly global brand that is enjoyed by customers all over the world. It is great news that we’re extending our presence in Spain, an exciting market where there is already an estab-

CALPE CREATES SPACE FOR WALKING PETS

“We believe it is the right time for Costa Coffee to offer the Spanish people our unique Mocha Italia blend and quality handcrafted coffee, and we envisage a significant store opening programme over the coming years.

“We now have three great partners in Sandpiper Iberia, The Coffee Company Spain Limited and Airfoods, and we look forward to working with them to deliver this exciting opportunity.”

Costa continues to grow in to new markets, integrating local tastes and preference, in order to become the destination of choice for irresistible coffee across the world. By Russel Ash

The Mayor of Calpe, César Sánchez, has visited a new area for pets.

The public site is dedicated so pets can roam off lead, whilst being accompanied by their owners. The area has all the proper water and electricity services, plus cleaning facilities. Pets can wander

comfortably and safely and owners can enjoy a “green” environment.

The site, located in the Fossa area near the beach, is 10,000 square meters, has gardens with trees and benches, public toilets, lighting and water fountains will be installed shortly. There are also paper dispensers and

gloves, to clean up after your dog.

The land has been flattened and there is plenty of space for the animals. The mayor explained, "It is a public and secure area for dogs, a novelty in Calpe for dog owners and dogs to enjoy a green space, which is maintained and clean."

VILLA ROMANA TO EXHIBIT 45 ARCHAEOLOGICAL ITEMS

Since 2008 the excavations at the Villa Romana in Albir have unearthed plenty of archaeological items which show how the ancient villagers’ lived and what their basic foods were. Forty-five of those pieces can now be seen at the recently opened Outdoor Museum. Last Sunday there was an open day to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the Museum. The new exhibit rooms were opened in the grounds next to the archaeological remains.

In one of these new rooms will be exhibited for their first time 45 items such as

a bronze ring, needles which were used to comb, an alabaster glass, a bronze hook, weights for fishing nets, a hunting knife, a baker’s stamp to mark the bread in special dates, several silver jugs and cups, a graffito on an eastern amphora from Palestine, and more.

The Villa Romana Outdoor Museum has had over 40,000 visitors since it opened in 2011. It has become an alternative offer to Albir beach, although it is still very close, and will be extended in the summer with the opening of the ‘Carabineros’ barracks.

ALBIR BEACH WELCOMES EASTER VISITORS

Juan Carlos Casiano, Head of Technical Services and Beach Areas Department, has checked on the improvement works on Albir beach.

They have installed two new toilets and during the Easter holidays there will be more emphasis on the cleaning and safety of the beach. The improvement works also included the checking of the footshowers and the cleaning of the children’s games area.

The ‘Paseo de las Estrellas’ promenade will be closed every evening from 7PM to 12AM until April 13th. There will also be a beach guard who will make sure there are no peddlers around and, of course, a lifeguard service. Both services will be added to the usual police officers and civil protection to reinforce safety in the beach areas. By Russel Ash

ALTEA

April 2nd – April 14th 2015

EASTER TRAFFIC JAM STARTS EARLY

Last Monday afternoon, driving from Benidorm to Altea became a real patience exercise.

The N-332 road was choked in the area passing through Alfaz del Pi, and Altea has also suffered several jams and the traffic will only increase when the tourists arrive. These two areas are the most affected places because Alfaz del Pi and Altea are already suffering from traffic congestion every day.

After a relaxed winter, Easter comes and the problem is more evident on the national road which links Benidorm with Altea. Politicians have promised

a ring road for years, but that never comes. It is only a nine kilometre road, but it becomes a nightmare for the residents who have to drive it to get to work or other daily activities.

Both directions have the same problem, no matter if you are going from Altea to Benidorm or the opposite way and the worse area is the road cross to Alfaz del Pi, where cars can be stationery for up to 20 minutes.

The roundabout infrastructure was planned to be opened on March 26th but we will have to wait for it to be finished.

Monday afternoon at the new roundabout of Alfaz del Pi, partially closed.

It is necessary for the officers to know what to do to face and prevent it, with confidence”.

The Benidorm Town Hall assembly hall was full of local police officers from most towns in the Costa Blanca area and two from Murcia, several members of the Guardia Civil, the National Police, Task Forces, Information Brigade and more. The meeting was also attended by members of the Benidorm Social Services’ Mediation, Coexistence and Integration Agency (Amics), some representa-

Help for ScHool SupplieS up to €60

the help for purchasing school supplies for children aged 3 to 5 will raise during the 20152016 academic year up to €60 after the partido popular (pp) proposal.

Last September the amount was €58 to help the families in need.

The PP also asked to the Town Hall that this aid be used only in local shops to

help the businesses located in Benidorm but, according to the PP, the Head of Education Department, Ruben Martinez, “prevented” this proposal.

This help for purchasing school items is subjected ‘to income criteria’ so they reach the most disadvantaged families with lower incomes.

The Town Hall of Benidorm and the Community of Property Owners of ‘Los Carrascos’ building have signed an agreement to end the last few years’ lawsuits without finding a solution. This agreement will allow the improvement works to fix the problems which are affecting the square.

The Head of Urban Scene Department, Conrado Hernandez, said that “we have managed to become united and sorted a problem which is affecting hundreds of families”.

In the budgets of 2015 some money is already included to start the improvement works in order to stop the leaks.

UNIQUE AND PERSONALISED GIFTS

When you visit the Photo Gift Centre you expect to find personalised gifts but on a recent visit, I was surprised by the range of services they also offer. I suppose I should have expected that they can print your photos but did you know that they can print them from phones

BIKERS LINKED TO DRUG TRAFFICKING CALPE

The ‘Guardia Civil’ has intercepted a biker group in Calpe linked to an international French club, and two men have been arrested.

One of the arrested is a 39-year-old Belgian and the other one is Spanish aged 24. They have been accused of crimes against public health, belonging to criminal organizations and public documents forgery.

The investigation began when the ‘Guardia Civil’ was warned (by French Police links in Alicante) about the existence of an

international biker group, composed of eight people who were previously involved in different crimes, such as drug trafficking or illegal weapons possession.

The ‘Guardia Civil’ suspected that the biker group could be economically supporting a bigger international group related to racketeering. After several searches they seized numerous guns (some of them classified as prohibited), different forged documents and a device which was used to record all the bikers’ group meetings. In addition they seized eight motorbikes (some of them with fake plates) and also drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine, hashish and marijuana. Further arrests are not ruled out. The arrested men and the seized items have been brought before the Court of Instruction no. 3 in Denia.

POSTAL SERVICE TO BE IMPROVED

Calpe Town Hall has already started the improvements by installing boxes in order to assure a postal service in all areas, especially in the urbanizations which previously had problems.

This second phase involves the urbanizations ‘Canuta’, ‘Oltamar’ and ‘Estacion II’. Residents of these areas can request this service at the Town Hall ‘Oficina de

Atencion al Ciudadano’ (Citizen’s advice bureau) and they will have to provide documentation that proves they own the property, such as the Suma receipt or the deeds of the house and also show their NIE card and passport.

The post box will cost €120 and an extra €30 for 15 years maintenance. TheTown Hall and Post Office are cooperating to improve this service.

CONCERT FOR HOPE

Students, staff and parents at Xabia International College were treated to an incredible concert given by students from various age groups, with all donations going to music teacher Abi Fletcher's Kenyan charity “Hope Restoration Centre in Nairobi.

The talented individuals gave an eclectic programme consisting of classical guitar, piano and violin solos, piano duets, as well as band ensemble and girls' choir. Material ranged from a Beethoven minuet and a Bach prelude, to more contemporary numbers by Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith, via Henry Mancini

and Bob Marley. Largely rehearsed

during lunch breaks, the musicians achieved a fantastic standard in recent months, one that Abi Fletcher and the rest of the staff are proud of. The concert followed a presentation, where Abi outlined the progress that has been achieved at Hope, due to a combination of Abi's drive and passion and the significant money that had been raised at XIC.

Javea's Mayor, JosĂŠ Chulvi visited Xabia International College recently, and faced a challenging and enthusiastic session of questions from the students in both English and Spanish. After first expressing shock and sadness at the Alps air crash, he then went on to outline his role within the town's council, before answering queries on a range of topics - from skate parks and dog mess to unemployment and street lighting. Pictured here are the Mayor with Head of Secondary,

Fiona Phillips, and TĂŠcnica, Alicia Padilla.

As Spring term comes to an end, children in Year 5 at Xabia International College Primary held a Greek afternoon to celebrate and share their learning about Ancient Greece. The afternoon started with Ancient Greek Olympic games — teams Sparta, Athens and Corinth took part in events such as Javelin, discus, the dash and other traditional games. Following the winners ceremony, children performed two mytus in the Greek theatre style, and enjoyed a Greek feast with parents who had come to share the fun!

EASTER MONDAY PRODUCTION

Penny Grant's production of 'Lilies on the Land' opens at the Javea Players' Studio Theatre in Javea's Old Town on Easter Monday, April 6.

It plays to full houses until Friday April 10. Such is the potency of the magical theatrical mix of a terrific play, a theatre company with a big reputation for the high quality of its productions, a tiny theatre and, God bless them, the support of the local press. . The seed from which “Lilies on the Land grew was an open letter in Saga magazine asking exWomen's Land

Army members if they would send the Lions Part any material relating to their experience in the Land Army that might help create a play. The Lions Part, a company of professional performers who collaborate to create seasonal festivals, plays and theatre pieces, expected a small number of replies. TEULADA MORAIRA

April 2nd – April 14th 2015

WriTing grouP Wins Prizes

At the end of 2014 the MorairaTeulada U3A ‘Creative Writing Group’ was invited to take part in a short story competition by the Denia Writers Circle, a challenge which was readily accepted. This eventually changed to a competition open to all, and sponsored by Jennifer Cunningham Insurances S.L in conjunction with Bay Radio.

The stories were on a number of themes and our members were invited to submit up to three stories each. Several of our members did indeed submit stories and when the total entries were whittled down to the final ten, five of them were from this Group. The winning three were then read out on Bay Radio in ascending order on successive Sundays. The group was so thrilled to discover that second place had gone to one of their members Richard Singleton, who wrote a very unusual story called 'Dear Mum and Dad' about computers and the future of the world, while the competition winner was another member, Hilary Coombes who wrote a stirring and moving story called 'The Lion'.

Warmest congratulations from the group to both Hilary and Richard. Indeed all the stories submitted by our group were excellent and reflect the tremendous talent in our little group.

In addition to this, two members of the group have recently had books accepted for publication – one, by Vonnie Giles, a book of short stories and the other, by Hilary Coombes. The group is totally thrilled by their success and it would probably not have achieved this if it hadn’t been for their membership of the U3A. Hilary said “it was the group that gave her the confidence that her own writing wasn’t that bad

after all and that without the support from the other members she is not sure whether she would have been bold enough to pursue it”.

Coupled with this, another member, Mike Hillier, is a prolific novel writer and has several books in print, with another one coming out soon, which he is arranging himself.

u3a MeeTing MondaY 6Th aPriL 2015

The venue for this month’s meeting is Salon de Banquetes, Avenida Mediterraneo, Teulada. Doors open at 9.30AM in order for the Committee to prepare the room. The meeting will start at 10:30AM to allow additional time for members, who have not already done so, to renew their subscription for 2015 and new members to join.

New members are welcome to join our U3A before the meeting and will be able to join Groups and find out more about our Travel and Cultural Events.

The Speakers at the April Monthly Meeting will be Meri and John Snell whom will talk about the history of the Lions and the charities they support.

Three arresTed for drug Trafficking

The Spanish ‘Policia Nacional’ arrested three Dutch men in Altea and Teulada-Moraira for crimes against public health and electricity fraud. The investigation started when the officers discovered that they were planting marijuana inside their villas.

The officers arrested two men, aged 25 and 45, who were living in a villa in Teulada-Moraira and one 52-year-old man living in Altea. During the search a total of 1,588 marijuana plants were seized. The officers realized that the men were also defrauding the electricity company, because the electricity system had been manipulated in order to supply the high energy consumption generated by hydroponics.

In addition, the officers found a gun, two detonating pistols and abundance of blank ammunition.

The arrested men, who had no criminal records, were brought to justice after giving evidence in police stations. The operation was performed by officers from the Local Brigade of Judicial Police Station of Benidorm. By Russel Ash

THE BRITISH ARE BACK

The Brits are back and without any doubt are top of the charts for property buyers so far in 2015. As the expression is in Spain "when the wind is behind you take it" so quite simply when buying a property abroad look for the right time.... The strong currency exchange rate seen recently together with the cheapest property prices in Spain for ten years there has been no better time than now and the bargains are being snapped up. Activating the British Market is something that property agents have been waiting for and only by waiting for the economic improvement in the UK to settle would the market come back seeing more and more UK residents looking to invest in a Spanish home.

Mortgages are now easily obtainable from Spanish Banks with around 70% of the value being available for non residents and even 80% for bank purchases. With very low rates of interest of around 2.5 3% making the investment using ones expendable income is a shroud move that offers so many benefits to anyone wishing to make some money for the future and also have the use of a holiday home in the sun. Families can enjoy their holidays throughout the year knowing that the weather is almost guaranteed to be warmer, dryer and with it being just over two hours flight time from the UK is why

by foreign buyers in the province that is an average of 50 completions a day.

British buyers were again top of the list accounting for no less than 858 of the purchases, 41% up on the same period last year totalling 18.7% of the total sales.

The strong pound is why now is the right time to consider your house purchase here in sun y Spain.

Spain is the ideal destination for buying a holiday home.

Selling up in the UK and taking the opportunity to retire to the sun is again becoming a popular choice. With a pension that will not only go further on the day to day expenses but also the fact that buy selling a property in the UK and then having the choice to buy from a wide variety of ideal homes for retirement years and having enough cash to put a side to enjoy over

the years is a very attractive solution especially to escape the long cold winters. So with more cash available and a much stronger pound 2015 is the right time for the Brits to take advantage and take on SPAIN as a second home.

PROPERTY purchases by foreign buyers have shot up to pre-crisis levels in the Alicante Province. The council of notaries have stated that in the first quarter of this year there were 4,588 property purchases

Whilst prices have plummeted the pound has strengthened a perfect recipe for those who want to jump on the property market here in Spain. With the turn in the confidence of the Spanish market the buyers market will soon see an even higher number of British and International property buyers looking at securing a profit of their hard earned cash. For pensioners there income goes a lot further here with a lot more euros to the pound as well as lower prices for living.

Buying property, whether it is in the UK, Spain, or any other country, is always a very big decision, and of course, a serious commitment. A decision of that magnitude requires the best team of experts and advisors who know and understand the local property marketplace and can help you to make your all-important overseas property purchase.

BUYING A HOME IN SPAIN

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LOCATION

Taking a holiday in Spain during the summer when everything is in full swing, nightlife is bursting with options one can soak up the sunshine on the beach or by a pool. The bars and restaurants are open every day and evening, water and theme parks welcome visitors from around the world and there is a wonderful feeling of enjoyment in the air.

This is indeed one side of life in Spain, but to live here you need to be aware that in most places it isn't quite as described above. For this reason, choosing the right location for you new home is extremely important and this will depend on many things, including climate, accessibility to local amenities and transport links. Most British people head for the coastal resorts, here you will find a variety of property types, from apartments to gated communities with lovely villas. Apartment blocks can be noisy if not well sound insulated, and may not have parking spaces.

Perhaps the all-important sea view may not be the answer for you, but presumably you will be looking for a well-constructed and finished apartment a road or two back from the beach with perhaps a mountain view and plenty of parking? Urbanisations are popular and

some do have on site shops and other amenities, but the majority don't. Will you be happy to drive to the nearest supermarket on a daily basis? How far is the doctor's surgery, your bank, the bar?

Before you buy your property, consider how many years you expect to live in it, whether you will be happy to move later on into a town to be within walking distance of everything, or whether you need that now. Many people seek peace and quiet, but that comes with certain inconveniences which may prove more difficult in future years. If you enjoy water sports, try to find a location close to a diving or water skiing school all the better if you can go there by foot. In larger towns and cities, public transport services are good, but often the smaller villages may not have any, or they may have just one bus that goes once a day in the morning and returns once a day in the evening. It's important to assess this before you buy.

It really boils down to doing the research in your chosen area, in the streets around the property you like, in the nearest village or town and in summer and winter. Spain offers so much variety that there is somewhere for everyone, but the trick is finding the right location for you and your circumstances. Happy hunting!

CALPE

Dominated by the imposing image of the Rock of Ifach, Calpe sits on the shores of the Mediterranean, surrounded by a beautiful landscape filled with mountains and vineyards. Many ancient civilisations settled in this town in the Marina Alta region of Alicante, a history narrated by the remains it preserves, which include the Roman baths "Baños de la Reina" (Queen's Baths). Deeply-rooted traditions harmoniously coexist with the tourist industry, making it one of the main destinations on the Costa Blanca. Eleven kilometres of beaches and coves, a marina and a beautiful natural environment are part of the immense appeal of the town. Including, of course, its astounding gastronomy, an authentic showcase of Alicante's cuisine. Calpe, a town with a long history and deeplyrooted traditions, is also one of the main tourist destinations on the Costa Blanca. The Marina, the promenade and eleven kilometres of coastline, marked by cliffs, beaches and coves, are some of the many attractions. Another attraction is one of the symbols of the town, the Rock of Ifach, a huge calcareous rock, 332 metres high, that penetrates the sea and gave the town its name. This region has been declared Nature Reserve, because of its botanicaland faunal diversity. The best views of Calpe and its coastline are seen from the top of the rock, accessible through guided tours at the park. The mild climate and the peculiar orography of the area make this town the ideal destination for everyone, from those seeking beaches and sun to fans of outdoor sports. Refreshment kiosks and equipment-hiring stands that offer windsurfing boards and jetskis are located all along the beaches of La

Fossa and Arenal, which have a beautiful promenade and offer all kinds of services. Among the many quiet coves in the bay is Les Bassetes, famous for its beautiful seabed and crystal waters. This cove rivals others such as La Manzanera and Les Urques in beauty, perfect for sailing and scuba diving. Calpe also has a sailing school for both beginners and advanced students and a scuba-diving centre in Puerto Blanco. Lovers of outdoor sports can climb the Rock of Ifach or go potholing in the Barranc del Mascarat and the Oltá Mountain.

Gastronomy, holidays History and Architecture and the Outskirts Calpe was inhabited by many different Mediterranean cultures. Iberians, Phoenicians and Romans all found a surveillance privileged point in this land, thanks to the Peñón de Ifach. The present town of Calpe was established in the area surrounding the Rock. Its history is narrated by the remains it preserves, including the Baños de la Reina (Queen's Baths), from Roman times. The historic quarter of Calpe is bordered by the old walls, erected in the 15th century to defend the city against pirate attacks. Next to the Moorish quarter of El Arrabal, part of the medieval walled precinct is preserved, some fronts and the large Tower of Peça. Nearby, the parish church devoted to the Virgin of the Snow, dating back to the 15th century, is the only Gothic-Mudejar temple in the Region of Valencia. Two beautiful examples of religious architecture are also found in Calpe: the hermitages of La Cometa and San Salvador, both from the 17th century. The rural tradition of this town is present in its

Rock of Ifach

This incredible geological landmark has attracted visitors from all over the world since time immemorial hence the town became a natural holiday resort. Today Calpe is also a magnet for the international sailing and boating fraternity and has a first-class marina situated at the very foot of the imposing rock. The two beaches are situated either side of the rock and are excellent for surfing and swimming.

Calpe's traditional gastronomy is mainly based on rice and fish. In addition to the famous paella, there are other rice dishes with beans and turnip, which are baked or served with Swiss chard. Also typical are dishes like the octopus casserole and Llauna de Calpe (fish stew). The wines with the label Designation of Origin Alicante should accompany any of these deli-

From Carnival to Fallas de San José (March 19)and including the Bonfires of San Juan (June 24) and the festival of Moors and Christians (October). The local holidays, devoted to the Virgen de las Nieves (Virgin of the Snow), takes place on August 5. From Calpe, many different excursions can be taken to other towns on the Costa Blanca. Denia and Jávea are located north of Cabo de la Nao (Nao Cape). These are tourist towns with an extensive coastline of beaches and coves. The visit may continue to the Montgó Nature Reserve, where the outline of the mountains dives down into the Mediterranean, creating spectacular cliffs. To the south is the town of Teulada, famous for its muscatel vineyards. Altea is dominated by the blue dome of the church of Virgen del Consuelo. L’Alfàs del Pi is an inland town that meets the sea on the beach of Albir. Benidorm, with its excellent beaches, makes this region one of the most important tourist destinations in Alicante.

EASTER THREE-DAY WINE TASTING

THIS Easter weekend, the Enrique Mendoza wine bodega in Alfaz del Pi - will once again be holding its three-day wine tasting experience.

Enrique Mendoza is a family-run bodega, which does not buy in any grapes, using only those grown themselves.

This is the fourth year that the award winning winery has held the event, which last year attracted 6,000 people. Mendoza produces the award-winning ‘Santa Rosa’ red, listed as one of Spain’s top 10 wines. For a €10 charge you can sample up to 10 different organically-produced wines and specialist olive oils and also get to take

away a souvenir glass. For an additional charge, try out some selected cheeses.

The event is on April 2, 3 and 4 from 9.30am until 4pm with free parking available.

NADAL IS TO BE FACE OF FOOD CAMPAIGN

ennis star Rafael Nadal will be the face of the latest campaign to promote Spanish food products in international markets, the Agriculture, Food and Environment Ministry confirmed Wednesday.

The head of that portfolio, Isabel Garcia Tejerina, will launch the new campaign on March 25, saying in a statement that it will emphasize the elements common to both Spanish food and the image of one of Spain's greatest athletes: quality, knowledge and recognition.

Efforts to open new markets, enhance companies' foreign presence, improve product positioning, reinforce Spain's brand and support the quality of Spain's agri-food industry are crucial to the gov-

ernment's internationalization policy, the ministry said. In 2014, agriculture, fishery, food and forestry exports totaled 40.8 billion euros ($43.3 billion), up 3 percent from the previous year. Spain is the world's eighth-biggest agrifood exporter.

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD

wE33 WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

If you’re feeling a bit sensitive this week you may misconstrue what others are saying, so before you lash out with your tongue, ask them to repeat their request again, just to make sure you’ve got it right. Maybe taking a few days off would recharge your batteries. TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

The strong influence of Venus your ruling planet brings a feel good factor to everything you do, so your home life and love improve in leaps and bounds. Mars enters your sign and brings surprises and changes, but you know exactly what you want and how you’ll get it. Be prudent with money.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

You’ll throw caution to the wind as Mercury boosts your communications and ambitions and renews your strength and confidence. The sun and Saturn help you lay strong foundations for the future, so don’t put up with second hand anything, from attitudes to amour. Take charge.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

Is it because you want to get physical with the love of your love, or is it that because summer is coming you want to up your game via physical exercise, like running a marathon? The move of Mars makes you dynamic and ready to push for career opportunities, so keep goals in sight.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

If you stretch your mind you’ll find the answers to things that have been hidden for a while, which also gives you the chance to correct old wrongs or set the record straight. The move of Mars boosts your ambitions and life in the public eye will become advantageous. The moon and Jupiter bring fun, so join in.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

You find yourself submerged in rational intellect and core deep psychology today, and its helping you come up with answers to old conundrums. Mercury pinpoints the areas of your life than need changes applied, and if discussing finances or property, you’ll hold your own. You’re on the ball.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

Mars influence on you could go either way. You’ll either be very subtle or very blatant, but no matter what way you want to play it, you’re heading into a time of transformation in your life, so don’t look back. Financial and emotional negotiations go really well, and you’ll come out on top across the board.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

If you allow tension to build in your life today, its because something has been left undone and you haven’t dealt with it properly. Be upfront with those closest to you at work and at home as you need co-operation to move ahead. If you have a grievance to air, speak up. Don’t let love and passion suffer.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

The sun in Aries joined by Mars helps you feel alive, so you’ll have to intention of taking a back seat in anything. You’re energetic, enthusiastic and raring to go, and that’s great, but just make sure younger people or children get their fair share of attention from you too.. Responsibilities must come first.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

From house problems to house moving, issues along those lines are rather prominent in your mind. The move of Mars brings a sense of comfort and boosts your self confidence, and even although the moon thrusts you under the spotlight, it’s vital that you finish what you’ve started. Stick to agreements you

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

You’re coming across to others as rather opinionated, but this isn’t you saying things for the sake of it, you know what you’re talking about and you have proof to back it up. Communicating, with emails or letters, have a defiant tone to them. You’re on a roll and that’s fine, as long as you have the evidence to back it up.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

Mercury leaves you questioning your own sense of worth, but your ideas and opinions cant be faulted, so like it or not, others will have to pay attention and listen to you. Recent fluctuations in finances have levelled out and are now on an upward curve, but don’t rest on your laurels. There’s still work to do.

Bake for 20 mins on the middle shelf of the oven, until golden brown. 6. Gently heat the apricot jam to melt, then sieve to get rid of any chunks. tronic brake force distribution!”

Peugeot considers itself at the enviro-vanguard, with all kinds of perfectly reasonable caveats (apart from so-and-so, who make cars that are tiny; and such-and-such, who only do electric). Apart from them, they really think they’re getting somewhere. The 508 RXH – top of the 508 range, and so much prettier than the 407 – has more up its sleeve than a bit of engine-cutting in traffic.

The diesel engine is a patented world leader in particulate reduction. The emissions are the lowest I’ve encountered for a car this size (119g/km). To prevent overheating and lessen the need for air-conditioning, even the windows have a greenish tint which, with the acoustic lamination and leather upholstery, made me feel insulated and remote – echoingly far away from my fellow road users. Paradoxically, since the car is large, I was often closer than I thought. The blind spot sensors, tiny orange spirals on the wing mirrors, glowed. “Other cars are using the road,” they warned me, silently. “It’s the A23!” I’d yell. “Of course they are.” The spirals, undeterred, kept glowing. There are four modes, “auto”, “four-wheel drive” (the

back wheels powered by an electric motor), “Zev” (100% electric for short distances) and “sport”. For the first few days, in auto, the acceleration was iffy: from 15 to 30, it would pull back, then surge into a perceptible skid. By day four, I could no longer make it happen and everything felt smooth, powerful but biddable. Day six, I was actively trying to skid, to demonstrate to my mister, while he drummed his fingers on the green glass, saying, “Really? You’re trying to make yourself skid in the rain, with children in the back?” “I just want to test the elec-

SPAIN NEW-CAR SALES ROSE 26% LAST MONTH New-car sales rose 26 percent in Spain last month, the 18th consecutive month of growth, car manufacturers' association Anfac said.

The February figure compared to a 28 percent rise in January, helped by a government subsidy program.

Registrations last month rose to 86,717, while sales over the first two months of the year rose to 154,836 cars, Anfac said. The government announced on Friday that it was extending the Plan PIVE scheme that offers price cuts on new low-emission vehicles for the seventh time.

Small things were annoying. The dashboard components were distracting in the over-reflecty front window; the parking camera would happily direct you to drive into a bollard. It was never obvious whether you should push the parking button up or down until you’d tried both ways twice. Harsh conditions, poor visibility, giant puddles, sudden diversions round corners: all that suits the 508, makes sense of its size, shows off its vigour and draws attention to its confident handling. One could imagine oneself more glamorous, more European and modern, living in a mountainous region, being more eco. That’s what you want from a family saloon, right? Some safety; acres of delusion.

TOP GEAR – WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Top Gear in its current format simply cannot and will not survive without Jeremy Clarkson.

His chemistry on-screen with Richard Hammond and James May was the very glue which held the show together in the early years, and then solidified it as time passed and made Top Gear so utterly fantastic to watch. To replace Clarkson

with a new presenter would be a catastrophic mistake.

Hammond and May already know this, I’m sure. They’ll likely continue to be involved with the BBC and work on their own shows separately, but I’d say their Top Gear days are most definitely over. Expect to hear more about that soon.

FEELING DOWN?

We all have our reasons for taking the drastic step of packing up and moving to Spain. For some it is simple: sun, sea and sangria. For others it is an attempt to escape unhappy situations or relationships back home. Whatever the reason, we all find out sooner or later that living in another country is not as easy as we may have believed. It does not solve personal or emotional problems and may even compound them as we do not have our loved ones around for support.

We all feel ‘down’ from time to time when things are not going well but there is a big difference between this and depression. Depression is an illness like any other and requires assessment and individualised treatment. Many people do not realise or do not want to acknowledge that they are depressed and it will be a friend or family member that sees the signs and encourages the sufferer to seek help. Some people resist any kind of intervention as they feel that there is some kind of shame attached to being diagnosed with depression when in fact the brain is an organ like any other. If you had a problem with your heart you would see a Doctor without question! Around 2 in 3 adults suffer with depression at some point in their lives. It is more common in women with 1 in 4 requiring treatment as opposed to 1- 10 men.

Symptoms vary between individuals but if you, or somebody you know has been feeling low and had several of the following symptoms for more than 2 weeks, advice should be sought.

for activities that you normally enjoy. Abnormal sadness, often with weepiness. Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or uselessness. Poor motivation. Even simple tasks seem difficult. Poor concentration. It may be difficult to read, work etc. Sleep problems such as insomnia, sleeping too much or early waking Lacking in energy, always tired. Difficulties with affection including low libido. Poor appetite and weight loss or the opposite, comfort eating and weight gain. Physical symptoms such as headaches, palpitations, chest pains and general aches. Recurrent thoughts of death. Feeling that life is not worth living or suicidal thoughts. Treatments include counselling, herbal or conventional medications and complementary therapies such as hypnotherapy and acupuncture.

Depression can have a massive negative impact not only on the sufferer but on those around that person and should not be ignored. Seeking help can seem daunting but a friendly chat with your G.P. or Nurse who can complete an assessment and discuss any concerns that you may have is the perfect first step to feeling yourself again.

FUNERAL PLANNING Given any discussion about your own death and consequent funeral is the last big taboo, this is a difficult subject to address. However, to paraphrase Benjamin Franklin – in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. So, the only way to present this subject is to be open and practical about the chooses we face and please remember, this is not about you. Your nearest and dearest are the people who will grieve your parting and be faced with the problem of organising and paying for an appropriate and respectful funeral. It is your spouse, your life partner, your children or your friends that have to carry this burden when they are in state of emotionally stress.

Given we would like to make it as easy as possible for them, at this time of grief that is exacerbated by our choice to live in Spain, there are plans we should make now and I would like to simply give you an outline of your options.

1. Do nothing – this obviously is the worst case as it will course maximum stress and maximum cost. Your nearest and dearest may have no idea of what to do first or how to organise a funeral in Spain. 2. Leave your body to science – this can course emotional stress to your nearest and dearest as there will be no funeral conducted as part of the grieving process. Also, the plan can be fundamentally ‘flawed’ if a post mortem is required or if you die out of the Province as it will negate the agreement leading

to a requirement for a funeral anyway. 3. Buy funeral insurance – there are a few flaws here. The plan only works if you keep paying the premiums and only covers you in Spain. Also the cost increases with time, i.e. you could be paying high premiums for many years and eventually pay more, than you would have done, if you had chosen to do nothing in the first place. 4. Buy a pre-paid funeral plan – the benefits here are many but a few critical points are. You get a single ‘emergency telephone number’ to call that will initiate implementation of the complete plan. The cost is fixed at the time of purchase and will never increase, therefore saving money. The plan will work both here in Spain or in the UK if you decide to return ‘home’. The only flaw is can you afford it?

If you would like to know more about your chooses or the details of the Golden Leaves pre-paid funeral plans, obviously I would be only too happy to meet with you privately. Thanks Brian. 616 786 174, email alteabrian@gmail.com

TIGER OUT OF TOP 100 44

SPORT

For the first time since 1996, Tiger Woods is not one of the top 100 players in the Official World Golf Rankings.

The former No.1 ranked player is currently ranked 104th.

Woods has not been on the outside looking in of the top 100 since Sept. 29, 1996, when he was ranked No. 225 and had only been a professional for one month. The next week, Woods won his first PGA Tour event at the Las Vegas Invitational and jumped to No. 75 in the world, the lowest he would be ranked for the next 19 years.

April 2nd – April 14th 2015

and Mark Brooks. The top 5 ranked players were Greg Norman, Lehman, Colin Montgomerie, Ernie Els and Fred Couples. In his career, Woods has accumulated a record 683 total weeks as the world's No. 1 ranked player, including 11 different runs at the top.

The major winners in 1996 were Nick Faldo, Steve Jones, Tom Lehman

The 14-time major winner set the record for most consecutive weeks atop the rankings in a span from August 1999 to September 2004 and topped his own record with 281 straight weeks at No. 1 from June 2005 to October 2010. Woods' last run as No. 1 was from March 2013 to May 2014.

The last International Break before the end of the Season saw the 4 U.K.Teams and the Republic of Ireland all move a step closer for qualifying for the European Championships. The 5 Nations have never previously qualified for the same major Tournament but all remain hopeful of reaching next Summer's Tournament in France.(Fingers Crossed) With the Premier League taking a rest due to the Break it gives us a chance to Review what's happened so far in this Season's Alfaz Faantasy League. Up to now we have had 6 different Teams at the Summit.Cisne Jack City,We R Leeds,Cowden Red Devils,Bars a Loner,Lenny's Spreaders and the current Leaders The Potters. At the moment The Potters are favourites with BET FRED to win this Season's Fantasy as they have a 63 point advantage over 2nd placed Keith's Max & Paddy. Based on past History it suggests that the Teams with the Players left in the F.A.Cup will have a better chance of lifting the much sought after Fantasy League Trophy.Out of the top 5 Teams Super Rhys have the most left in with 4 Players. Our Mark Carter Ladies Section has been dominated by Lesley's Team Laws Lads who had held on to the top spot for 19 Weeks until last Week when Sarah's Team The Dons knocked them off the top. 4 other Teams have enjoyed a stay at the Summit and they are Lyndy Lou's Boys(1 Week ) Pauline's Vodka Army(5 Weeks)Blue Monday(2 Weeks) and Shaztastic(1 Week). This Section will go right down to the wire with only 28 points between the top 4. The U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League has

been topsy Turvy to say the least. Early on Rocky's Mini Spurs set the pace but they were soon caught by young Bradley's Team Killer 2000(where do these Young Ones get the names from ).From then on the top spot was shared between 4 Teams,Sponge Bob XI,Ginger Ninja,Dog Dale and the present Leaders Super Rhys. This League could also be a close run situation with nothing to chose between the top 4 Teams. Unless there is an avalanche of goals I can't see Keith's Team Max & Paddy not winning our Golden Boot League which is sponsored by Leonard Knowles Construction. Their advantage over Super Rhys is a substantial 55 points. They have been at the Summit for 18 Weeks now and don't look like giving up their exalted position. The 1st Team to top this Section was Neil's 7 Palms Playa Poniente, then Mike's side The Shed took over followed by Jarrod's We R Leeds. The only Lady Manager to top this League was Karen when her Team Florida Pearls took over for 1 Week but since then it's been Max & Paddy all the way. 3 Teams have topped our F.A.Cup League so far and they are Tom's Benidorm Trotters,Evertonian Tom's Limoneros Caramelo and Marcus's Salford Sausages. Two Teams have 6 Players left in the F.A.Cup Richard's Rainbow Warriors and Steph's Seymour Shooters which could prove decisive in the final run in. Looking back on how the Players have fared so far in this Season's Fantasy League. There have been 65 penalties awarded of which 10 were missed,29 own

ALFAZ FANTASY SPONSORED BY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

KHAN: BROOK CAN WAIT HIS TURN

Kell Brook has called Amir Khan's bluff regarding a potential grudge fight between the pair - telling his British rival: "It's not about money for me." The calls for Khan to finally settle his longrunning feud with Brook have grown stronger in the last few days, but the Bolton fighter insists he has more pressing issues. While Khan is keen to meet the IBF welterweight champion "one day", he added he would be keen on a winnertakes-all fight.

Brook, though, is unfazed as he told Sky Sports News HQ: "It's not about money for me. It's about everywhere I go, (people asking) 'when are you going to fight him?'. It's public demand now. I think that he's getting forced in to this fight if he gets in."

Brook defended his world title with a fourround demolition job of mandatory challenger Jo Jo Dan over the weekend and is supremely confident he could do a similar job on Khan, whose much-maligned chin is still considered to be a major weakness.

HUGHES BANNED FOR THREE WEEKS

Wasps No 8 Nathan Hughes has been hit with a three-week ban after being found guilty of striking George North in an Aviva Premiership clash with Northampton Saints. Hughes has therefore being ruled out of S u n d a y ’s Champions Cup clash with Toulon, a blow for Wasps boss Dai Young.

North was forced off on a stretcher after the collision for which Hughes was sent off "He's been knocked down to the canvas - although both player and team denied by super-featherweights in his career," the charge. said Brook. The RFU have now confirmed Hughes will

miss three weeks following a hearing on Tuesday evening.

"Nathan Hughes (Wasps Rugby) a p p e a r e d before an RFU Disciplinary panel this e v e n i n g , charged with striking with the knee and/or shin, contrary to Law 10.4(a), d u r i n g Northampton Saints v Wasps RFC on Friday March 27 in the Aviva Premiership," their statement read.

TOWNSEND STRIKE SAVES ENGLAND

Andros Townsend rescued a 1-1 draw for England as their seven-match winning run was brought to a halt by Italy in Turin.

The Spurs winger has made a habit of saving his best for the international stage and he did it again for the Three Lions as he came off the bench to crash home a wonderful equaliser 11 minutes from time.

Italy had bossed the first period and deservedly led when Southampton striker Graziano Pelle guided home on the half hour after Phil Jones had failed to stop Giorgio Chiellini's run and cross.

Roy Hodgson used the encounter to experiment with his line-up and gave Tottenham's Harry Kane his full bow. The forward was starved of service for much of

the first half but did have a hand in the move that saw Wayne Rooney hit the crossbar with a deflected volley.

The Three Lions improved after the break and Kane saw a low shot drift just wide of the near post while Kieran Gibbs should have done better when he fired into the side netting after fine link-up between England's front two. The Rooney and Kane partnership had some real moments of promise and the Spurs striker will be happy with his display on his first start for his country.

The visitors continued to press as the game got stretched and after Townsend levelled they almost won it, but Rooney was denied by the impressive Gianluigi Buffon.

HOLLAND TOO STRONG FOR SPAIN

The Netherlands once again proved too good for an under-par Spain as goals from Stefan de Vrij and Davy Klaasen handed the hosts a 2-0 friendly win in Amsterdam on Tuesday. pain were hoping to exact revenge for the 5-1 thrashing they suffered at the hands of the Dutch at last year's World Cup, but their chances were undone by two goals in the opening 15 minutes.

De Vrij rose highest to head home Wesley Sneijder's in-swinging cross before Klaasen was given an alarming amount of space inside the box to fire home on the rebound after David de Gea had saved his initial effort.

Defeat means the European champions have now lost friendlies against three continental heavyweights France, Germany and the Dutch since

being dumped out in embarrassing fashion after just two games at the World Cup.

Del Bosque made nine changes to the side that sneaked past Ukraine 1-0 in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Friday, whilst Hiddink made just five alterations from his side's 1-1 draw with Turkey.

The extra strength in the Dutch side paid dividends in a flying start as De Vrij, who also scored in the 5-1 thrashing in Salvador 10 months ago, opened the scoring with a superb header from Sneijder's dangerous cross. Just three minutes later it was 20 when Klaasen pounced on a loose ball inside the area area and despite firing his first effort too close to De Gea, the rebound fell kindly for the Ajax midfielder to lash the ball high into the net.

FERRARI SHOCK S E PA N G Ferrari put a dismal 2014 Formula One season behind them today with a tactical masterclass that allowed Sebastian Vettel to upset the odds and sweep to victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix. -

"After the difficulties of last year, the amount of effort that has gone in to turn this team around... is just extraordinary," said the

Italian team's jubilant technical director James Allison after Ferrari's first win since 2013. - "You can't find the words to explain how good this feels," added the Briton.

Ferrari's 2014 blank was their first season without a win since 1993 while four times world champion Vettel failed to triumph at Red Bull. Maurizio Arrivabene

An early safety car period saw Hamilton and Rosberg pit for hard tyres while Vettel stayed out and laid the foundation for victory on his mediums.
