SHOP TILL YOU DROP IN THE COSTA BLANCA

The main shopping malls in costa blanca have high street brand names such as Primark, c & a, Zara, H&M, Mango and many more. The shopping centres are La Marina located in Finestrat La Cala near to Benidorm in the direction of Alicante, the other La Marina is further north near Denia, in Ondara. The third is in the South Costa Blanca called La Zenia Boulevard, located in Orihuela Costa close to Torrevieja.

All three shopping centres are close to the AP7 toll road exits and are easily located. Travel companies make special excursions so you can leave the car behind and enjoy the many bars and restaurants whilst out for the whole day. For more information on travel excursions contact Beniconnect travel agency. They have day trips to La Zenia Boulevard priced from17€ travelling by luxury coach and includes travel insurance. The sales are well and truly underway, known here as "Rebajas" you will see the Red "Rebajas" signs in almost every shop window. Traditionally the sales in Spain always start on the 7th of January, the day after the "Three Kings".

It's really is worth taking a look at the huge savings, as there really are some great bargains to be found. Often prices are much cheaper than in the UK, with some great high street names. The shops in the main shopping centres are open normally from 10am to 10.30pm and do not close during the afternoon. There are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants. La Zenia also has a Casino, Bowling and a children's park. Both La Marina centres have a Cinema and in Finestrat there is Bowling and children's activities.

If you prefer a more localised shopping spree, then why not visit the local towns. Altea has an amazing variety of top fashion stores, jewellers and a wonderful range of restaurants to visit whilst you are there, but remember that most shops close at 2pm and re-open in the evening after 6pm.

3

the evening, and therefore dinner is taken early which is quite normal, British evening time is for entertainment and socialising, not shopping. So are the Spanish shop owners missing the trick here? Why not keep open for the afternoon and I am sure it would be a big surprise to see how many more shoppers from the UK and other European countries would visit them during the afternoon.

In the Old Town of Benidorm it really is quite amazing to walk around during the afternoon. It is easy to spot the Brits who don't know about the afternoon closing times and most are looking around bewildered that the shops are closed. The odd store that is open often makes a killing, as they have a unique afternoon audience.

Brits abroad often enjoy a late breakfast and then by the afternoon enjoy a stroll around with a few stops along the way for coffee, beer, even Tapas for lunch is on the wish list and the Old Town is the ideal place. Arriving to closed shops and also many smaller bars closed, it seems that the difference in our culture is quite a way apart and still in the main holiday areas the locals seem happy to stay with tradition rather than put more money in their tills.

We all know about “siesta” time, but shops with January Sales that close in prime time shopping hours are really bonkers, especially knowing that the Brits love to shop and are used to all day shopping before getting back for tea time or perhaps dinner.

There are many British visitors who will want to go out for

January is also prime time for the UK travel agents, summer holiday bookings are at their peak in January because of the cut price deals, and most major tour operators have a January Sale. The latest figures show holiday booking so far in the UK since New Years Day at an all time high, with Spain showing as the most popular destination so far for the British traveller. Last year figures show that Benidorm registered 11.9 million overnight stays and that 3 out of 4 foreign visitors were British.

UK EXPATS LOSE WINTER BENEFIT 4

NEWS

nearly 93,000 of britons living abroad in countries like spain, France, Greece and Portugal, have been claiming the payment up to £300 annually which will be halted by Work and Pensions secretary Iain duncan smith, saving taxpayers nearly £17m a year. Only countries whose temperature is higher than the hottest region in the UK (5.6C) will be affected, for example Italy will not be included in the "temperature test" as the northern area is colder in the winter than Britain

Mr Duncan Smith said: "The huge increase in UK winter fuel payments made to people living in European countries equates to a near doubling in costs to the British taxpayer, and follows a ridiculous ruling by the European Court of Justice.

"The winter fuel payment is intended to help British pensioners with heating costs. "From winter 2015/16, we

are changing the rules so that it no longer goes to people in European countries with an average winter temperature higher than the warmest part of the UK."

NEW HIGH-SPEED RAIL LINKS FOR SPAIN 8th Jan - 14th Jan - 2015

as spain is getting ready for general elections, spain's world-beating highspeed rail system is ready to connect eight provincial spanish capitals The public works ministry plans to add another 1,000 kilometres (621 miles) to the country's AVE (high-speed rail network) in 2015.

The cities of Zamora, Leon, Palencia and Burgos will be joined to the system in the north. In the east, Valencia will be joined with Castellón, also Alicante and Murcia will have access to AVE. In the south, Seville to Cadiz will be joined, then finally Granada will be connected.

The trains will not travel at their maximum speeds of 300kph, but Salamanca will also be added to the network. Stations are planned in 2015 for the Galician cities of Pontevedra and Vigo.

The high-speed line will also connect the cities of Plasencia and Badajoz in Spain's west, through the cities of Cáceres and Mérida.

Spain's El País newspaper reported that the plans have cost 48 percent more than in 2014, with a cost of €3.56 billion, including subsidies from Europe totalling €285 million. The high-speed rail network, established in 1992 connecting Madrid and Seville, is considered to be one of Spain's greatest achievements, reducing travel time between many major cities in the province.

Money spent on the network in 2015 is set to be double the amount spent on the nation's highways, with people now preferring to travel by train than plane within Spain. Germany has stated that traffic between many points on the AVE network is insignificant, Spain disagrees stating that the network shows economic growth.

SPANISH STOCK MARKET INCREASES

This was good news for companies and for stock owners alike after 3 years in decline. Most countries increased on the stock markets, but Spain did very well, appearing fourth on the list. The biggest risers were Japan, the United States and Germany. At 21 percent, Spain was a lot higher than the average in the Euro zone, calculated at 17.64 percent.

There are many different types and qualities of olive oil, which makes it difficult to compare prices. On average in the UK it costs around £4 a litre in Aldi, to £6.50 at Waitrose.

Due to future climate changes we could see olive oil originate from the US, where landowners in California and Texas are changing and now planting olive trees. Pie night at Monroes restaurants, in the centre of benidorm, Moraira and Pedreguer. Monroes is famous for being the Number One Carvery in the Costa Blanca, and now they are boasting top spot for their Home Baked Pies.

Pie and Mash has always been one of my favourite British dishes, so when owner Heidi invited me along to sample the homemade pies, I simply couldn't wait.

given how tasty the food was, but because you help yourself to vegetables and potatoes, it's all too easy to put a little too much on your plate. My excuse is that the serving spoons are very large! No dessert for me on this occasion, and the choice was also very tempting I must say...

The carvery section is laid out with a full choice of vegetables, mash and roast potatoes, as well as wonderful thick gravy. They also offer a choice of chips, peas and gravy. For me it has to be mash with gravy, although looking at the chips I would probably have a change next time.

The huge pies are fresh baked and served on the hot counter. How good can a pie look when baked in a large round pie dish? Standing tall, each pie offered a different filling. My choice was "Steak and Ale", but there was also Chicken, Ham and Leek which looked very tempting.

A generous portion was served into my plate and it looked amazing. I helped myself to vegetables, mash and gravy. The filling was not only tasty and juicy, but the steak was tender and soft, with no fatty bits. It was covered in perfectly cooked short crust pastry, crispy on the outside. The meal really was absolutely superb.

I have to admit I could not actually finish everything on my plate. This was a pity

Pie Night is every Monday from 6pm and costs only 6.75â‚Ź including a dessert, or 5.25â‚Ź for the main course only. SPAIN ROAD DEATHS FALL

The number of people who died on spain's roads fell to a record-low 1,131 in 2014, official figures published last Friday show. The road toll for 2014 was just below the 2013 figure of 1,134 and the lowest since record-keeping began in 1960. Last year also marked the first year that Spain saw less than 1,000 fatal accidents on the country's roads, the new statistics reveal. There were 981 such accidents last year.

COURT BANS UBER TAXI APP

Popular web-based taxi company uber has suspended its amateur driver service in spain after it received confirmation of a court ruling to ban it in the country. UberPOP, which allows non taxi drivers with their own cars to take passengers at budget rates, via a mobile app, started in Spain in April. "We've temporarily suspended UberPOP in Spain while we appeal the ruling and study new options to allow Spanish people access to safe and comfortable journeys," Carlos Lloret, the head of Uber in Spain, wrote in a blog post late Tuesday.

THree KInGs Parade 8th Jan - 14th Jan - 2015

Tuesday evening the streets of benidorm were packed with families awaiting the exciting Three Kings Parade, one of the most magical evenings of the year which fills each child with hope and joy. Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar, were represented this year by Lorenzo Cervera, Mariano Cebrian and Marlon Roy Wolf. They paraded the streets accompanied by an entourage of more than 500 people, including musicians, jugglers, clowns, cartoon characters and superheroes, with over a dozen different beautifully decorated floats.

The parade began just after six in the evening from Parque de Elche (Dove Park) and wound its way through the main streets of the old town for more than two hours, finishing off at the Town Hall Square or should we say at this time of year, the wonderful Plaza de Navidad.

The parade was split into two distinct parts, the first being more fun and playful, which included a large amount of full costumed cartoon and Disney characters. A big talking point was the float which depicted a scene

from the film “Frozen, which included a snow machine which showered artificial snow over the crowd; it really was magical for the children. The second half of the parade was more traditional, but just as enjoyable, as volunteers threw thousands of sweets and gifts out to the children lining the streets. The children all turned up with plastic bags, as they really do throw out that many treats! The evening ended with a colourful firework display (of course), it would not be a Spanish celebration without them.

cHrIsTMas raFFlea For eMaus bIG THanK you To... 8th Jan - 14th Jan - 2015

The eMaus cHrIsTMas raffle was held at the Weekly buzz news desk at the indoor market in benidorm on the 19th of december. Attended by the trio of Anne, Pam and Stewie known as the Fab Four they were missing Tad owner of the Yorkshire Pride Pubs who had unfortunately couldn't make it on this occasion. The event was organised to raise money for 100 sets of new bedding for the local children of EMAUS.

All of the children are in care at EMAUS homes in the local area, most who have been abandoned, orphaned as well as others that are handicapped or taken away from their parents for protection. In all cases the circumstances are very

sad and most of us do not see how much that these children have to rely on charity and on the very kind careers who work voluntary in most cases.

The fund raising has been a continuous effort led by Wayne at the Showboat and his crew including many outside helpers. The Weekly Buzz newspaper would like to thank Wayne and his team for the fantastic fund raising as well as all of the businesses in the indoor market who donated gifts for the raffle.

The Weekly Buzz Team would like to say a bIG THanK you on behalf of EMAUS and the FAB FOUR to all the businesses and readers who put up a raffle prize or gave a donation.

GIVE A DOG A The alfaz animal shelter was closed in november, to the delight of animal lovers as complaints piled up over the running of the centre. However it left 68 dogs without a place to go, and fears rose when it was announced that any canine without a home would have to be put down. Luckily a lot of the homes were found in time, with the Town Hall left appealing to anyone to take care of the ones remaining. Volunteers stepped up quickly and fostered the dogs until they could find a more permanent home.

CAVEMAN PAINTINGS TO BE RESTORED FOR EXHIBITION In 1993, prehistoric drawings were discovered in the sierra de bernia Mountains in altea, and the site is now on the unesco's World Heritage list.

Regional and State funding was granted in August 2014 for the restoration of the rare cave paintings, and a programme has started to prepare the site, including installing an entry point, fences and an information point where visitors can read about the findings.

As the cave paintings are located in an area high up in the mountains, the Spanish Government and the regional administration in the Comunidad Valenciana want to install a permanent 3D presentation exhibition in Altea Old Town, so that everyone has a chance to see them.

The prehistoric images date between 100 and 400 years BC and are located in the rock formation next to the

The Grand Prize draw in TM lions 2014 christmas raffle took place on 19th december at the lions´ bookstall, Moraira Market. A magnificent 2511 tickets were sold over a three month period - a sterling piece of work by Lions Andy and John E. who took hold of this event by the scruff of the neck and frog-marched it briskly over the finishing line. The winning ticket 00305 was purchased at TM Lions´ "Elvis & Shaky· concert on 6th November by well known local character "Aussie" Rob Lewis, whose favourite watering hole is Bar Bariloche, Tabaira and it was there where Lions President, Colin Lilley, tracked Rob down and presented him with his prize of Pepe La Sal Supermarket Vouchers to the value of 250 euros. Second prize of €150 Paichi Garden Center vouchers was won by ticket no. 00447, purchased by Martina Elesen, from Holland; the remaining four prizes – all of a 50 euro voucher to be spent in any local shop which is an AECO (i.e. Chamber of Commerce) member – were won by Ouden Dyk (ticket 00743), a Mr or Mrs Woods (ticket 00480), Jim

Rogers, of the Orba Warblers Golf Society (ticket 02458), and Lily Baguley (ticket 01237). Congratulations to them all!

Finally, a special THANK YOU from Teulada Moraira Lions Club goes to Edwiena Zengerink of the local Dutch Club in Moraira who is a fantastic supporter of this event and single-handedly flogged a mind boggling 290 tickets. Last year TM Lions presented Edwiena with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of all her hard work - maybe they now need to add a gold star!

On 18th December, the children of Cap D´Or School, Moraira had their 2014 Christmas Party at The Lowry Restaurant. TM Lions were asked if they could furnish a few bodies on the day to help organise games for the children etc and also if they could pull a few strings with their friends at the North Pole and arrange for a personal appearance by Santa.

WOW Cap D´Or School needs a personal appearance by the big man himself just a week before Christmas!

On the appointed day, a group of the Lions´ braver members turned up at The Lowry to face more than 100 over-excited children rendered completely hyper

by a combination of adrenaline and the sugar rush that comes from sweets, cakes and goodness what else! The games the Lions could manage. The noise levels and general mayhem, generated by lots of children having a great time, they left to the teachers, parents and grandparents to keep under some semblance of control!

Santa, of course, did turn up – and brought along with him the TM Lions famous snow machine which generated gratifying quantities of white stuff to the delight of everyone there as a junior disco helped burn off some excess energy and give some much needed respite to the grown-ups in the room.

to fall much further.

People who want to make a lifestyle choice with a second home see that, if prices haven't bottomed out after seven consecutive years of falling, they are close to it.The second factor is exchange rates. The euro-pound rate which last July stood at â‚Ź1.05 but is currently â‚Ź1.27 is a massive incentive.

With the turn in the confidence of the Spanish market we will soon see an even higher number of British and International property buyers looking at securing a profit of their hard earned cash. For pensioners their income goes a lot further in Spain with a more Euros to the pound as well as lower prices for living.

Fonts de l’Algar The Fonts de l’Algar (Algar Waterfalls) are at 3 km from the centre of Callosa, heading towards Bolulla, and Tàrbena. The Algar waterfalls form a natural park with an elevated grade of conservation of the ecological richness, and at the same time it has tourism and environment education services.

ForTalesa de bèrnIa

The Fortalesa de Bèrnia (Fortress of Bèrnia) was built in 1562 by the royal engineer Giovanni Battista Antonelli. It was a magnificent and clear exponent of the military architecture in the Renaissance epoch. King Philip II of Spain ordered its construction to face the Ottoman incursions on the coast. In 1612, because of its inefficiency and because it was far from the coast, it was demolished by order of Philip III of Spain. At the Fort you can still see the arches, the fosse, the bastion, the well and the wall remains. The wall measured 100 meters long and 100 meters wide. It has been considered as a Property of Culture Interest since 1997. The explanatory panels show the ancient running and use of the Fort.

The first information about the castle dates from 1322, when Infant Don Pedro was given it by Bernat de Sarrià, Lord of Callosa, who might be the builder. It was successively owned by several Lords of Callosa such as the Moncada and the Bou Family until late 17th century. At this point, it started to get ruined, and it finally disappeared in the early 18th century. Nowadays some remains of the castle wall can be admired by visitors.

FIesTas Festes de Sant Jaume. Les Danses de Sant Jaume, also known as La Festa del Fadrí are the oldest fiestas in the festivities of Callosa d’en Sarrià, as well as in the region. The historian Adolf Salvà dates the fiestas in 1819, when is the first written reference. Its origin, like many other celebrations, is pagan: possibly the dances were in honor of some god of the fertility. The festival is in honor of a saint, in this case Saint James. The festivals of Sant Jaume are not limited exclusively to the dances, they are also a few days of celebration in the streets, like: cucanyes (popular games), games of Calitx (a popular game with coins) of Valencian pilota, loquat, cake tasting, correguda del gall (Rooster race), etc. Moors and cHrIsTIans As a people with historical roots, since 1860 are held the second weekend in October, the celebrations of “Moors and Christians”, are declared National Tourist Interest since 1985. They are celebrated in honor of the Virgen of injuries. Among the most spectacular acts, are the colorful parades Entrada Mora and Entrada Cristiana old dances preceded by Nanos, which accompany the Virgin during the procession. The dance of the Nanos precedes the parade and represent the pagan festival.

According to the Guardian newspaper "Evidence suggests that Christmas weight is particularly hard to lose" whist the Telegraph said that "On average, people gain 5lbs (2Kg) over the 4 week Christmas period).

So the question is...What do we do about it? We all know the answer. Most of ignore it, or say, knowing full well that we won't, I'll lose it later. But we don't , that is the growing (excuse the pun) problem facing society as a whole but more importantly all of us as individuals. The average american now weighs in at nearly 20lbs (8.7Kg) more than 20 years ago. This is leading to all kinds of possible health issues. Heart problems, increased blood pressure, strokes, type 2 diabetis, the list goes on and on. When we read about the numbers

of individuals suffering it tends to lose its meaning but every extra person with for example type 2 diabetis is someones mother, father, brother sister etc. They are individual people with problems not just for themselves but often for theit families.

So our next question is ......what shall we do about it this year? The team at THE WEEKLY BUZZ have commisioned a guide to weight loss from Paul Morris Publications that will be downloadable free to readerS. This should be ready for next weeks edition! Lets really create a BUZZ about this and not let ourselves become one of those statistics. Tell us your success stories, send us your pictures tell us what you did, how you did it. PLEASE HELP, MY CHRISTMAS TURKEY MADE ME PREGNANT!

now that I have your attention I would like to talk about accidental pregnancies which are all too common around the christmas and new year festivities.

And yes, your turkey could be the culprit, well, sort of! Combined oral contraceptives commonly referred to as ‘the pill’ can fail as a result of severe diarrhea or vomiting caused food poisoning. This is a common result of incorrect defrosting/cooking of the traditional Christmas turkey.

Diarrhea, vomiting, and incorrect pill taking can all cause pill failure. Over the festive period, parties, alcohol and hangovers can lead to all types of contraceptive failure and then of course there is complete wild abandon and risk taking

behavior. It is no wonder that we see a baby boom 9 months after Christmas!

A surprise pregnancy can bring joy to many couples but for others not so. If you have not used contraception or are worried that your contraception may have failed, you must seek medical advice as soon as possible. Emergency contraception is not an alternative to regular contraception but is highly effective ‘after the event’ for preventing an unwanted pregnancy.

There are 2 methods available

Tablets There are 2 types of tablet available. One must be taken within a maximum of 3 days after unprotected sex, the other, a maximum of 5 days. Neither are 100% effective and should be taken as early as possible to avoid a possible pregnancy. In both cases you only need to take one pill. Tablets will not protect you should you have unprotected sex again in the same cycle. Depending on the type prescribed by the Doctor, you may be able to safely repeat the treatment but this must only be done under medical supervision.

emergency Iud (coil) An emergency IUD is a small plastic and copper device that is fitted in your uterus up to five days (120 hours) after unprotected sex or within five days of the earliest time you could have released an egg. It takes about 15–20 minutes to fit. If it cannot be fitted immediately you may be advised to take a tablet.

Anderson overcame some horrendous luck with the dart board and an altercation with a spectator to see off 'The Power', who failed to take advantage of key moments in the match. Taylor missed three darts at double 12 to go 5-3 up in the eighth set and from that moment, Anderson played some scintillating darts.

He roared into a 6-4 lead but Taylor responded in amazing fashion, breaking the Anderson throw to bring the game back to 6-6.

But Anderson held his nerve in the final set to become the king of the world.

“I’m a proud scotsman and always have been. I live in somerset now which is a great place but I’m a scottish man and I get on with anyone. It doesn’t matter where you come from or who you are and I think we should all start doing that as well.

“you panic from the word go when you’re playing Phil Taylor. you panic the whole game because you know at any moment he can turn it on. one minute you’re going great and the next he’s hitting 180, 180, treble…

Convicted rapist Ched Evans looks set for a move to League One Oldham with personal terms agreed, according to Sky sources, despite three sponsors revealing they would withdraw their support. Oldham and the Professional Footballers' Association had been expected to make a joint statement on the future of the striker on Tuesday but several issues needed to be resolved and discussions continued on Wednesday morning.

Having canvassed opinion from supporters and sponsors, the club appear to have reached a decision and Evans is expected to be part of the first-team squad for Saturday's match at Boundary Park against Doncaster. Although opposition to the club's move

gathered momentum on Wednesday with three sponsors stating they would end their association with the club, the club insisted they remained determined to complete the deal and are expected to make an announcement on Thursday.

A statement from the Oldham board read: "There is a will to get this done. We believe it's the right thing to do but there are still issues. We want to continue to work with the PFA on this."

There has been a split among fans and sponsors. If he completes the switch he'll be attending a medical and the staff will be ready to carry that out. It looks like three days of waiting for a resolution is almost over."

Djokovic was pleased that, after saving three break back points in the seventh game, he found more rhythm and started dominating an oppo-

nent whose penchant for net attacks can often be disruptive. "From that moment on it felt a different match," Djokovic said. "I felt I was more swinging through the ball on the court and playing more confidently."

liverpool skipper steven Gerrard has confirmed he will join los angeles Galaxy this summer. In announcing his decision to leave Liverpool, Gerrard stressed he could not play for another European club if there was a chance they would come up against his boyhood side, and he believes Galaxy is the ideal destination.

"I’m very excited to begin the next chapter of my career in the United States with LA Galaxy,” Gerrard told the LA Galaxy website. The Galaxy are the most successful club in Major League Soccer history and I am looking forward to competing for more championships in the years to come. My discussions with (coach) Bruce Arena and (president) Chris Klein were extremely positive and

daVId Moyes 1 barcelona 0

david Moyes admitted it was a dream come true after watching his real sociedad side upset catalan giants barcelona on sunday night.

Moyes enjoyed his "happiest night" at the La Liga club since taking charge in November after a Jordi Alba own goal secured victory over Barca.

"We have talked about Barcelona when I was at past clubs," said the former Manchester United boss. "We used to watch them, like in the Champions League final, with admiration. We always said, 'My goodness, how would you get a result against Barca?' Tonight I got that opportu-

nity. "It is quite similar to the early days at Everton," he said. "How to get a result against likes of Arsenal or Liverpool at that time, or Manchester United? We did not always get results, but we got some, built confidence and got better.

Barca boss Luis Enrique paid a heavy price for leaving both Lionel Messi and Neymar amongst nearly 300 million euros of talent on the bench. Both South American stars only arrived back in Spain on Friday after an extended Christmas break and Moyes defended his counterpart's decision to only introduce them after the break.
