Dear Readers

Merry Christmas to you all, wishing everyone the very best for the festive season and for the New Year. As this is our final issue of 2014 and until our next issue on the 7th January 2015. Have a wonderful rest, and enjoy some fantastic sport and TV shows. Christmas has so many things to savour at home and out and about in the Costa Blanca, especially when taking time to walk around the coastal towns and country side.

The chilly winter days and some rather wet weather has been the trend of the last week but the good news is the long term forecast for the Christmas week is promised to be wall to wall sunshine, with temperatures hovering around 20 degrees. It is quite normal to see people on the beach at Christmas. In past years I've seen beach volleyball on Christmas Day in Benidorm and it's quite usual to see sunbathers “chill-axing” on sunbeds along the beaches of the Costa Blanca. It hardly seems possible especially as I’m all wrapped up in my winter woolly jumper, big jacket and scarf, not to mention the winter vest! Although I can say that on Sunday afternoon I experienced a wonderful winter walk in the sun along the seafront with my dog. We decided to stop for a cold beer on the sunny terrace of a local bar on Altea seafront. I couldn't help myself sending a photo from my phone to family in the UK with the caption “a Sunday stroll in Spain”. It was only a short time before the storm hit which unfolded into a spectacular display of electric lightening over the ocean, with the downpour over the higher ground that worked its way to the coastline, drenching the towns along the coast.

With my Christmas tree now on display at home the living room is very cosy and the spirit of the season feels underway. I'm looking forward to spending time relaxing and enjoying this wonderful country, including getting out and about to see some of our clients who offer great hospitality. I enjoy the atmosphere of watching the football in a welcoming pub with a bite to eat and a few beverages.

In the last few weeks we have asked our readers to take part in the Buzz Christmas Raffle Draw taking place at the Buzz News Desk (aisle 6 Indoor Market Benidorm) on Friday 19th at 1pm. We have a table full of gifts and surprises, so please come along to support the Children of EMAUS. All proceeds will be used to provide new bedding for each child in the local care homes. In this first phase, the company installed over 7 km of pipeline, connecting more than 1500 domestic properties and 600 other installations, including supplies to around 50 hotels and at least 18 dining venues. HOSBEC and Natural Gas jointly presented the gas installation project, together with the necessary measures that the hotel industry needs to adopt in order to use this fuel in future, including maintenance and inspections. This new natural gas fuel in Benidorm will include supplies to kitchen areas and boilers rooms, although it may also have an application in air conditioning and cogeneration facilities. Boilers operating with natural gas will perform better and a consume less.

The trend in the market using natural gas as an energy source for the hospitality industry can generate significant savings between 20 and 30% against that of

GOOGLE NEWS SWITCH OFF

Google News left Spain early on Tuesday morning despite a top newspaper association making a last minute call for authorities to find a way to halt the closure. Tech giant Google called the bluff of Spanish policymakers and shut down its online news service at around 2am on Tuesday 16th December. The closure came after the Spanish government passed a new “intellectual property law” which means that companies will have to pay to post content from the country's media outlets on their sites.

Demands for divorce by mutual consent rose in all regions of Spain except for the Canaries and Navarre, while demands for contested divorce rose in all regions except for Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country.

method of cooking and what the ingredients are, you are often faced with a dish that simply does not live up to expectations. Carbonara sauce can be made so many different ways but the correct ingredients are Pancetta, Egg, Onion, Cream and Parmesan Cheese. To my delight this is exactly how the chefs at El Italiano prepare their sauce, and the richness of the cheesy cream Carbonara is probably amongst the best I have ever tasted anywhere.

Homemade Pizza and Pasta are the speciality of the house, but the menu also offers great fish and meat dishes. So if you fancy a juicy sirloin steak or a fillet of salmon you will find something for everyone. With fish being a favourite dish in Spain, the choice includes Sole with Marnier Sauce, Grilled Swordfish, Grilled Salmon and a Special Dish of the Day. One of my favourite pasta dishes, if cooked correctly, is Spaghetti Carbonara. The problem when eating out in restaurants is that unless you know the

For many years the Fab Four fund raisers (Anne, Pam, Tad & Stewie) have been the hub of the fund raising and have given up an amazing amount of their time to organise the fund raising for the local Children's homes. The Weekly Buzz newspaper would also like to thank everyone and all of the businesses in the indoor market who have donated gifts.

Merry Christmas!

A HIDDEN SHOPPERS TREASURE A MAGICAL PHOTO GIFT

Getting new ideas for the Ideal Christmas gift is sometimes difficult, so why not use a simple photograph to create a magical transformation and the perfect gift for someone in the family, a best friend or your partner. Go along to the Photo Gift Centre in the Plaza Coblanca, situated in the Rincon end of the Avenida Mediterraneo. the Plaza is tucked away just behind the BBVA bank opposite the Casino Mediterrรกneo.

The "Green Screen" studio at the "photo gift centre" offers a service that is very unusual if not unique. Here is some examples of what they can offer by taking a simple photo and adding a background of your choice.

The photo in the bottom right shows a customer called PAT, photographed against a green background. The second photo shows the finished product with a new background and a uniform "overlay". Using this system a photo can be magically transformed and your child could become a superhero, a pirate or a princess.

The other photo shows the original image of JACK taken in the "Green Screen" studio. The addition of a background of Benidorm is added with some text (bottom left). The final product shows the new image printed on 6x4 inch crystal. If you have any questions or special requests call in to see Joseph or call 634 345 221

ALTEA CHRISTMAS FAYRE This year Altea is holding a small Christmas Fayre in front of the Town Hall, from the 19th till the 24th of December. Perhaps a bit late, but an excellent solution for all those who have adapted to the Spanish way of life and left their Christmas shopping till the last moment. Here you will certainly find something really special for your nearest and dearest, even on Christmas Eve! There will be around fifteen stalls with interesting and original craft work, from Christmas decorations and

beautiful ceramics, to exclusive leather bags, jewellery, puppets and toys - there's something for everybody. Most of the stall holders have their equipment and tools with them, and can add that personal touch to a present, or even take orders for something really unique. For the younger visitors there is a

merry-go-round and storytelling. According to data from the holiday rental platform, HomeAway, based on enquiries received during 2014 for property rentals between 20th December to 7th January, the demand for holiday home rentals over the Christmas period in national and international destinations has increased by 19%. Destinations within Spain account for 41% of the requests while those for international destinations account for the remaining 59%. The volume of enquiries from Spaniards for holiday rentals in Spain for this Christmas have grown by 35%, the most sought after destinations being the region of Valencia, which accounted for 25% of the requests, followed by the Canary Islands (18%) and AndalucĂa (17%). The Canary Islands, in particular, experienced the greatest increase in demand with respect to 2013, of more than 73%. The most popular international destinations for the Spanish were France, the United States and Costa Rica. The volume of enquiries for French holiday rentals has increased by 58% compared to 2013, and accounts for 12% of the demand. Paris, London and New York are the most popular international cities. Rental requests for Catalonia accounted for 57% of the total demand in Spain, and it is also the national destination with the highest year-onyear growth (+88%). The other favourite national desti-

nations are the Canary Islands and Madrid. El Mundo reported that Spain’s islands are the preferred destination for German tourists when opting for a holiday rental in Spain and is their fourth most requested international destination after Austria, Holland and France. British tourists showed preference for the Canary Islands, Tenerife and Lanzarote in particular, and accounted for 75% of the demand from the United Kingdom through the holiday rental portal. The region to register the best data in terms of increased demand is the Balearic Islands (+40%). Madrid is the preferred destination for Italian tourists, with the demand growing by 42% compared to the same period in 2013. The portal’s analysis of the data also indicates that the period of rental sought by foreign tourists for Christmas is an average of six days for all nationalities.

WINTER IN SPAIN - SOMETHING DIFFERENT 18th Dec - 6th Jan - 2014

Considering that much of Spain sizzles during the summer, there’s perhaps no better time of year to visit the country than during the winter. From tourist-free sightseeing to hitting the ski slopes, here’s what you need to know about traveling to one of Europe’s favorite winter destinations.

ANDALUCIA

If you’re both hot- and cold-weather averse, then this is the time of year to head to Spain’s southernmost region of Andalucia. Typically super toasty during the summer, Andalucia becomes considerably more mild during winter months, making it the ideal destination for escaping weather extremes that you might find elsewhere in Spain, or even in Europe. Not only that, but since it’s low season for tourism, expect visits to places like Granada’s Alhambra, Córdoba’s Mezquita and Seville’s tower-topped cathedral to be a lot less packed with people than during warmer months (make your way to more than one of these destinations during an Andalucia day trip).

HEAD FOR THE (SNOW-COVERED) HILLS

When you think of the Iberian peninsula, siestas might come to mind instead of hitting the slopes. But, in fact, during the winter you can actually go skiing all across Spain. In the south, grab your poles (or rent them) at Europe’s southernmost ski resort located in Granada’s Sierra Nevada mountains. Then in Madrid, just an hour’s drive from the center, you can be slaloming down the mountainside of one of the two resorts. Meanwhile, in Barcelona you can make the three-hour drive to runs in the Pyrenees, even crossing over into other countries (Andorra and France) altogether.

MADRID AND BARCELONA

For a little more holiday spirit, spend a part of your winter season in big cities like Barcelona and Madrid. During the month of December and beginning of January, these – Spain’s largest cities – bring on the Spanish holiday cheer. Expect light-decorated streets and bustling Christmas markets, like the one found in Madrid’s Plaza Mayor, or Barcelona’s Plaza de la Catedral. Then combat the cold weather with a cup of hot chocolate and a side of churros, or go more local in Barcelona with a suizo, a hot chocolate topped with a mountain of unsweetened whipped cream.

LPD Travel Wish all of their customers a very Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year 2015

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD

wE25 WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Freedom is the real key to happiness today, so take full advantage of a potentially upbeat, active period during which you can show your most positive face to the world at large. Allow your mind to explore, and ensure plans for the next few weeks reflect this process.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

Certain aspects of life are trying your patience, but its not too surprising as the lunar low is around. Your best approach is to be cool, calm and collected. Showing great discipline if you feel under threat can work wonders and balances your over sensitive side.

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Business and practical matters count for a great deal. it’s a great time to make new contacts, especially ones that’ll be important for a long time to come. You’ve got what it takes to be on top form socially, so show the world what you’re really like now Gemini. CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

You’re looking for a good time today and in an uncomplicated way, you’ll manage that. You wont allow routines to bother you, and your ability to share with others is noteworthy at present. Financial gains are possible but you need to build on past efforts. LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

You can now take advantage of a period that’s especially good for personal growth. Look for opportunities to broaden your horizons in different ways, and be willing to seek out more excitement. Doing what you really want to is difficult so you’ll need to compromise.

Scribble Pad...

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

The spotlight is on the progress you can make in financial matters, specifically those that involve people close to you. The current interlude offers you an excellent opportunity to purse some sort of advancement, but there’s nothing to indicate this has anything to do with work.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

Practical matters should be running smoothly, so you’ll get the chance to contribute a very joyful attitude to whatever is going on around you. Today is favourable for getting an overview of where you are at the moment. Remember to get some relaxation too. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

Its one of the best days of the month to really make an impression on life. The lunar high helps you arrive at decisions in seconds, and you’ll manage to push ahead while others wander around in a daze. To make the best progress now, focus all your efforts. Go for it. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

There’s a few quieter days on the cards as the moon passes through your twelfth house, but there’s so much you want to get done that one option will be to battle on regardless, despite planetary warnings. At least when you’re exhausted you’ll know why. CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

You should be able to get what you want today with the aid of a little persuasion, and you wont easily be put off by the slightly negative attitudes of people you have to deal with. Avoid getting involved in arguments, especially those that lead you nowhere. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

You want things to be on course when it comes to practical matters and all arrangements. it’s a good time to get in touch with powerful emotions and to confront issues you’ve been putting to the back of your mind in recent days. Making people laugh stands you in good stead.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

Use this period to widen your intellectual horizons. Most Pisceans are a good deal brighter than they think, and this fact comes home to roost today. People are happy to adopt your ideas, especially family members. A dose of “ christmasitis” is possible today.

anxiety. However, palpitations in older people are often caused by a heart problem such as abnormal rhythms of the heart. The most common abnormal heart rhythm is atrial fibrillation (fast irregular contractions of chambers of the heart known as the atria). The overlying cause may be coronary artery disease (atherosclerosis of the arteries supplying the heart muscle) an

overactive thyroid gland or even depression.

In younger, fitter people, palpitations are most often caused by stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, or by stress. Some drug treatments can cause palpitations as a side effect. Because palpitations cause an unusually fast heart beat, they can cause the pumping action of the heart to become inefficient thus causing delivery of oxygen to the body's tissues may fall. In turn, this leads to symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness or a feeling of light-headiness.

Should any person be suffering from a sensation of palpitations they should see their Family Doctor who will be able to diagnose the cause. A simple test called an E.C.G. (heart trace) will probably be advised. This is a painless, inexpensive test than can provide the doctor with a lot of information about the activity of your heart. 1'$ #(0$ 0$ (0 1$/+(, * 2("(#$ (0 *0- +-/$ "-++-, (, +$, 0 1'$6 /$ +2"' *$00 *()$*6 1- "-,02*1 -"1-/ 4'$, 1'$6 /$ %$$*(,& #$./$00$# 3-(#(,& 1'$ -"1-/ + 6 4$** !$ *$ /,$# !$' 3(-2/ 1' 1 +$, (,'$/(1 %/-+ 1'$(/ -4, 1'$/0 0 4$** 0 1'$ + *$ ,-1(-, 1' 1 "-+.* (,(,& !-21 . MASTERCHEF: THE PROFESSIONALS

Season 7 Episode 21 of 21 After seven weeks of competition, only three chefs remain and their last challenge is to prepare a threecourse menu for Marcus Wareing, Monica Galetti and Gregg Wallace. They have just 180 minutes to draw on everything they have learnt during the contest and over the course of their careers to create a starter, a main and a dessert that show off their culinary ability. The judges then assess their efforts before deciding who will be crowned champion, succeeding last year's winner Steven Edwards. Last in the series BBC2 London 8:00pm Tue 23 Dec

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

SPONSORED BY The Alfaz Fantasy League slowed down last Weekend after the Bonanza points haul of the previous Week. The 1 Monday Night game and 9 Premier League games at the Weekend provided the Fantasy with 23 goals,5 clean sheets,46 yellow cards and 2 red ones. The 2 Players dismissed were Aston Villa's Kieran Richardson and Hull City's Tom Huddlestone for both going over the top with their tackles. There could have been more if Referee Chris Foy had shown a little more bottle while officiating the Diving Championships at Stamford Bridge at the Weekend. Dennis's Team The Potters became the 6th Team to reach the Summit of the Alfaz Fantasy League when they overtook Lenny's Spreaders by 5 points and nudged them into 2nd place. The Potters are one of the few Teams at the top who do not have Chelsea's Diego Costa and Manchester City's Sergio Aguero in their Line Up. Their 3 strikers are Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez,Spurs Harry Kane and Everton's Lukaku who between them have scored 172 points.Lesley's Laws Lads are in 3rd place just ahead of Vince's Bars a Loner. Down at the foot of the Table there is a bit of light at the end of the Tunnel for Les's team Have Not Got a Clue because for the 2nd Week running they have closed the gap on Winnie's Le Hombre Rioja. Sarah's Team The Dons have reached the No 1 spot in our Mark Carter Ladies Section, they have taken over with an 8 point advantage over last Weeks Leaders Sharon's Shaztastic.Sarah a few Years ago won our Junior League and his now showing her Brothers what it's all about.Kim's Ginger United and Pam's People are both nicely placed in 3rd & 4th place. At the other end of the Table Winnie's Team Le Hombre Rioja had another bad hair day only scoring 4 points which leaves them trailing Kate's Team Mixed Bunch by 23 points. No changes at the top or bottom of our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League.Lilie's Sponge Bob XI have strengthened their grip at the top by moving 24 points clear of Harley's Ginger Ninja while at the bottom Adam's Team What's the Point have fell further behind Calum's Rees Red Devils, the distance now 57 points. The Golden Boot League which is sponsored by Leonard Knowles

Construction still has Keith's team Max & Paddy leading the way. This Week they scored 19 points thanks to his 2 Chelsea Players Diego Costa,Edin Hazard and Spur's Eriksen who all scored at the Weekend. Karen's Florida Pearls are keeping tabs on the leaders in 2nd place but the team to watch out for is Big Andy's Albir Hotspurs who moved up 14 places to 3rd.His 3 Midfield Players Edin Hazard,Juan Mata and Eriksen were all on the score sheet for the Hotspurs. At the other end of the scale Les's Team Have Not Got a Clue moved closer to David's No Hopers and are now only 9 points away. Both Teams have Arsenal's Giroud in their line ups who bagged a brace of goals in the Gunners romp against Newcastle. 3 Teams have qualified for our Premier Imports Draw at the end of the Month for a case of fine Wine and they are our highest scoring Team Arfa United (69 ) and the 2 teams who had the Lowest Score Tommy's Quantrill's Raiders and Chris's Team Son of St Domingo who only managed a miserable 1 point each. Last Month's Winner was Steph's Team Seymour Shooters. PHIL TAYLOR TARGETS GOOD WEEK PRAISE FOR 17TH WORLD TITLE HIGH DAVID DE GEA 18th Dec - 6th Jan - 2014

Phil Taylor is still the most feared man at the World Darts Championship as he attempts to land a 17th title at Alexandra Palace. There were murmurs about the 54-year-old’s decline after a shock defeat to Michael Smith last year, but his ominous recent form has shown that ‘The Power’ is ready to conquer the sport’s top players once again.

37

But the Dutchman has shown vulnerability in the last few

Taylor, the pre-tournament favourite, sent out a warning to his rivals last month when he took the Grand Slam title with an average of over 100.

He faces little-known German Jyhan Artut in the first round and has been handed a helpful draw to the quarter-final stages. But waiting for the Stoke thrower in the semis could be the winner of the 'quarter of death', a duel between the likes of James Wade, Stephen Bunting, Raymond van Barneveld and former conqueror Smith.

The biggest threat to Taylor’s title hopes could be defending champion Michael van Gerwen, who ripped the crown from him in January.

‘Mighty Mike’ completed a 7-4 triumph over Peter Wright to become the youngest winner at the age of 24, taking the world No 1 spot in the process.

months, suffering televised defeats to Mervyn King, Kim Huybrechts and Terry Jenkins.

Van Gerwen opens his defence against Joe Cullen and will need to rediscover his blistering best scoring if he runs into Gary Anderson in the semi-finals.

He was pushed to the brink by Anderson in last year’s tournament, finally winning 4-3, and the red-hot Scot remains a dangerous opponent. Watch the PDC World Championship live on Sky Sports Darts from December 18.

Juan Mata praised David De Gea’s matchwinning display after he made a series of crucial saves in their 3-0 victory over rivals Liverpool on Sunday. The Spain international twice denied Raheem Sterling from close range and tipped a Mario Balotelli shot onto the bar. Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to sign De Gea from Atletico Madrid in 2011 came in for some criticism after he made a number of costly errors in his first season at Old Trafford. But De Gea is now widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and Mata knows he will be a crucial performer if they are to continue their recent good form.

THIERRY HENRY RETIRES FROM CASTROGIOVANNI FOOTBALL AND JOINS SKY FINED

Thierry Henry has announced his retirement from football and will join Sky Sports as a football expert and ambassador from the start of 2015.

three-time winner of the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year at Arsenal and twice winner of the PFA Players’ Player of the Year.

Henry lifted more than 35 major individual and team trophies including the World Cup and European Championship for France, the Champions League and La Liga with Barcelona, the Premier League and FA Cup at Arsenal, the French League at Monaco and the MLS Shield with the New York Red Bulls. He was twice winner of the European Golden boot, four times winner of the English Premier League Golden Boot, five times winner of the French Player of the Year,

Thierry Henry said: “I’ve been fortunate enough to have had an amazing playing career with many incredible memories and now I can’t wait for the next chapter to begin with Sky Sports.

The global sporting icon will work across Sky Sports’ unrivalled schedule of live international, European and domestic football, joining a line-up of football experts that includes Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jamie Redknapp and Graeme Souness. Sky Sports viewers will be able to enjoy Henry’s opinions and insight forged from a playing career of unparalleled success.

He is the all-time leading goalscorer in the history of both Arsenal and France. He was also an integral member of the historic Arsenal Premier Leaguewinning ‘Invincible’ team of 2004.

MCLAREN PAIR BUTTON & ALONSO

McLaren have retained Jenson Button for 2015 with the veteran staying on to partner the returning Fernando Alonso in an all-world champion line-up.

After weeks of protracted deliberations over their driver line-up for next season, McLaren finally ended the saga on Thursday morning by announcing Button will be staying in a race seat at the expense of 2014 team-mate Kevin Magnussen. The Dane has, however, been retained as McLaren's new test and reserve driver.

While Mercedes might quibble with that assessment, the Alonso and Button partnership – a vivid contrast in character and driving styles – is a mouthwatering prospect. At 33 and 34 years of age respectively, Alonso and Button will form by far the oldest partnership on the grid in 2015.

Prop Martin Castrogiovanni has been fined £7,900 and given a suspended four-match ban for comments he made in the wake of Toulon’s defeat to Leicester. Castrogiovanni gave his own impromptu press conference in the wake of Toulon’s Champions Cup defeat to the Tigers at Welford Road on December 7. He then delivered an astonishing rant about Leicester – his former club - and their Director of Rugby Richard Cockerill.

GARCIA RESIGNS FROM FIFA ROLE

Michael Garcia, who led the investigation into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process, has resigned from the FIFA ethics committee in protest over the handling of his findings. The former US attorney dropped his bombshell on the eve of the latest meeting of FIFA's executive committee (ExCo) in Marrakesh, citing a "lack of leadership" at the top of FIFA in a lengthy resignation statement.

Garcia also made it clear he disagreed with FIFA's decision to declare the investigation into the bidding process closed.

CROLLA SUFFERS SPORT THIS WEEK FRACTURED SKULL (and Boxing day)

Anthony Crolla will have surgery on Wednesday after an attack by burglars left him with multiple injuries. The Manchester lightweight, who was due to fight for a world title in January, suffered a fractured skull and broke his ankle in two places when he was hit with a concrete slab.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed Crolla had been pursuing intruders who ran through his garden after leaving his next-door neighbours' house.

18th Dec - 6th Jan - 2014

That January 23 challenge for Richar Abril's WBA belt is now on hold, and trainer Joe Gallagher told Sky Sports Crolla's injuries, which also include cuts to the head, are bad enough to require surgery.

The 28-year-old, a former British and Commonwealth champion, had worked his way into world title contention with eight unbeaten fights after back-to-back defeats in 2012.

MAN CITY FACE BARCA PSG FOR CHELSEA

REDS SENT CRASHING OUT

Swiss club Basle have knocked Liverpool out of the UEFA Champions League after forcing the Reds to a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Ten-man Liverpool needed to beat Basle to be able to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition, however they could only manage a draw which got them eliminated.

Having spent many years out of the competition, Liverpool failed to liven up their campaign only managing just one win against Ludogorets which has now condemned them to the Europa League competition.

Manchester City face an intimidating Champions League last 16 tie with four-times winners Barcelona. Chelsea will face Paris Saint-Germain - which means a reunion with David Luiz - and Arsenal will take on Arsene Wenger's former club Monaco. Barcelona, who last won the competition in 2011, knocked out Premier League champions City at the same stage last season and boast the competition's all-time record goalscorer in Lionel Messi.

Brendan Rodgers' team just needed to win the final game at home and they would have been through, but it was not to be as Basle took a shock lead.

quarter-final stage last season but who suffered just one defeat during an impressive group stage campaign this time around.

The draw has been kindest to Arsenal, who will take on Wenger's former club Monaco. The French club have former Premier League champions Ricardo Manuel Pellegrini's City, who needed a 2-0 win at Roma in their final Group E game to qualify in second Carvalho and Dimitar Berbatov on their books and finplace, will play host to Barcelona at Etihad Stadium ished top of a group that included Bayer Leverkusen, on February 24 before heading to the Nou Camp on Zenit St Petersburg and Benfica - despite scoring just four goals. Fabian Frei finished off a stunning move to give his side the lead, and Liverpool started chasing the game.

It got worse for them when Lazar Marković was sent off 15 minutes after being subbed on for an attempted shove on the face of a Basle player, although replays suggested that it was a harsh decision.

With ten men, Liverpool still gave it a go in the last 15 minutes of the encounter looking for a goal.

Skipper Steven Gerrard produced a moment of ingenuity when he curled in a free-kick past Basle's keeper to level things at 1-1. It reignited memories of the game against Olympiacos in 2004 when Liverpool had to come from behind to advance to the next round.

Jordan Henderson struck the bar in added time, but it was not enough for Liverpool who needed an outright victory.

With the result, Liverpool has now been demoted to the Europa League after finishing third.

ARSENAL PICK UP THE PACE

Meanwhile, Arsenal produced one of their best displays in the Champions League this season beating Galatasaray 4-1 in their final group game.

Both Lukas Podolski and Aaron Ramsey netted two goals apiece to help the Gunners to the win in Istanbul.

Of all the goals, Ramsey's second of the match was very spectacular after he belted an unbelievable leftfooted strike that sailed into the net.
