Interview with Garry & Sean the guys behind the latest girls event and fun night. So I went to meet the founders and cast to find out more... Garry has been sitting on the idea for 10 years the Benidorm Knights are now born. Formed together with partner Sean, based on the Chippendale idea from the UK the Benidorm Knights have performed live at the Hotel Marina In the last two months Garry & Sean have put

it together and made it a reality. Starting with a recruitment programme, they told me "trying to find the suitable candidates for auditions was not a easy task" Garry takes on the task of teaching the guys the moves and holding the rehearsals a daily routine and a task that has to create the success of the show. All the uniforms have been made by scratch by seamstress Pat the wardrobe mistress working around the clock to be on time for the first show. > Page 5

HELLO!

Fiestas Go Off WIth A

fter experiencing the recent events of Fiestas in Benidorm and Alfaz Del Pi the next week should take us all back to some reality of our normal day to day lives. For holiday makers and visitors I’m sure most will be returning home to recover or perhaps may decide to take a few extra days here to relax and rest. It has been a week of partying, fun for the whole family and for many locals and visitors and we may now feel a little shell shocked at the fact that the next big event is only just over five weeks away!! Yes Christmas party celebrations are now being booked and so are Christmas dinners and there are some great hotel deals available for mini breaks ideal for relaxation together with festive fun. Christmas Shopping has started with local shops making their window displays together with some fantastic gift ideas. Mini breaks are a great way to see your friends and family, hotel accommodation takes the pressure off having guests at home but allows people to get together for fun and relaxation. If you are living here in the Costa Blanca then it is a great idea to have visitors come over to see you but still having their own space. The latest deals online with Thomas Cook and Travel Republic are very good value, the cost for 4 nights over Christmas including flights and half board is from a little as £350 each including half board 3star hotel. The Buzz will give you lots of information about what´s going on and also the very best places to eat, drink and to enjoy the best entertainment around town If you want to travel around and see the best views in Spain then you are in the right place, we are so lucky here in the Costa Blanca to have such a choice of both mountains and the wonderful coastline. We have travel around information on page 12 giving you some ideas of places to visit. Every week we will feature an special place where you can have a day out. If you want to hire a car or a scooter we have a special discount for our readers on pages8 & 29 and get around for as little as 20€ per day see our special savings voucher on page 8.

any of us enjoy watching fireworks, the vast colours, shapes and noises. Each display is a different spectacle they gather large crowds of people of all ages, this in itself may be one of the biggest risk factors. I doubt that anyone who has visited Spain in the last week has been able to escape from the smell of gunpowder in the air; it gets some getting used to when fireworks are let off even in the day time. This comes to a big surprise to many even the biggest guy’s jump out of their skin from the bang of a firecracker, after being dropped out the windows of passing by taxis! Though fireworks are wonderful to enjoy, Safety is important to many of us, here in Spain people have a slightly different outlook on things and are often encouraged to put their own safety at risk. Fiestas such as “Correfocs” (which in English means fire-runs" people turn up in their hundreds to take part, fireworks are ignited in the centre of crowds and people are shouting, screaming and sprinting for cover! Unfortunately fireworks are dangerous and a fire incinerated an apartment in Calpe on Wednesday when a six-year-old was left to play with fireworks on the sofa in the sitting room shortly before 9am. By the time his 8-year-old sister and parents realised the couch was in flames it was too late to put the fire out and the family had to flee, warning other residents on their way down the stairs. The building was evacuated and the fire department put out the flames but not before the entire apartment had been gutted. The family was on holiday in the area.

NEW legal guarantees for expats have been brought in by the European Union. The deadline for member states to implement EU law 10/249 on the 'right to translation and interpretation' expired on October 27. The range of costumes are massive and so are all of the extras that includes make up and things that you just could not imagine or perhaps you can but I can’t mention right here!! Not only does John and his staff aim to please almost every request for the amazing fancy dress party here each year at Benidorm Fiestas but also throughout the year catering for the massive stag and hen following that Benidorm has where we see the Stag or Hen wearing some very unattractive costumes and other bits and pieces that make up a show piece model, including

What is a Penya?

There are groups of friends and families who have been celebrating together the religious festival and the groups are known as a PENYA. Children's parties are arranged with tables and chairs set up on the street for them to enjoy a feast. Some Penya groups have been together for over 30 years also there are new groups each year and each person makes a financial contribution monthly. The fund is then used to hire a bar or restaurant and have a week long party with food and drinks, live entertainment and much more. Some groups are known to hire their own chefs and waiters, also they have DJ´s and music systems and the places that are used for these events are decorated and have the PENYA name

colours and flags hanging outside. The live music and entertainment normally goes on until 4am each morning and then for a few hours there is calm before the fireworks wake everyone up and the party starts all over. Many British and other nationalities who have businesses in the area of the Old Town in Benidorm close up or rent out there premises for these celebrations. The many people in the Old Town celebrating are mainly Spanish with British visitors and tourists coming to the area to see the celebrations. The British pubs and bars will put on their own fiestas and enjoy the celebrations with additional visitors to entertain and make a party of their own.

Birthday Bash at Rock and Roll House

Gala Dinners at Benidorm Palace

With little more than a couple of months to go to the Christmas and New Year Holiday season it's time to be planning where to go and what to do. Here in Benidorm we have an extra long festive season which lasts up until 6th January when the Three Kings arrive from the east, which means that the famous Benidorm Palace has a series of FIVE special Gala dinners and shows over the period. Noted for its fabulous food and service which makes a marvellous opener to a night of spectacular entertainment, the Palace has been satisfying its customers since 1977 and is still packing them in today. Tickets for the special nights are sure to be at a premium, so our advice is book early to avoid disappointment. On Christmas night and Boxing Day evening (25th and 26th December) you can enjoy a SIX course meal with wine for two, Cava and see The Drifters – Up On The Roof, Under The Boardwalk, Save The Last Dance For Me – plus the show for only €62 (€29 for kids) which sounds like a bargain to me!

This annual event is a must for any Rock and Roll fan, Europe’s Number 1 Elivs tribute act Simon Patrick performing live with a seven piece band including backing vocals. Nowhere in Benidorm or even in the Valencian region will you find a free event packed full of top quality live music. After a thrilling musical spectacle from Elvis and his band, Dean Ryan took over the stage making his first ever live performance with a seven piece rock and roll band as Shakin Stevens. I managed to catch him behind stage just before hand and asked him if he had much rehearsal time with the band, Dean replied. “No the band has arrived just for this anniversary event and there was no time, we are straight into the set and they will follow me, all will be fine!!” I must say I was surprised but after seeing the show I understood that

the professionalism between them all just worked. The band knows Rock and Roll as so does Dean Ryan. Simon Patrick joined together with Dean Ryan for their first ever duo with the band and rocked the roof off, the crowd were simply overcome by the show and wanted more.... And that’s what they got. The Rock and Roll House is also home to the Elvis Festival held in Benidorm each year in and this event is soon to be recognised as a major tourist event attracting hundreds of visitors to Benidorm. The birthday event now 9 years on is becoming a regular attraction for visitors who just love it and keep on coming back year after year. The dancing and rockin went on all night until the early hours and there were free T-Shirts handed out to the crowd as memorabilia of the event.

travel around Benissa Issue 08 / 15- 21 November

Benissa has a surprise at every corner. A landscape full of contrasts, surroundings full of history, endless leisure possibilities and the friendliness of its people, are all an invitation to enjoy everything this town has to

offer. It is a true pleasure to take a stroll through Benissa's perfectly conserved Historical Centre and discover the living museum that is comprised of the buildings of the old town. Cobbled narrow streets, hundredyear-old walls and ancient stately homes that take us back to the medieval era. HISTORY Years of Iberian, Roman, Arab and Christian history have formed the character of this town named Benissa. Going back thousands of years, remains like small cave paintings have been discovered that suggest the area was inhabited in the Prehistoric era. Coins and amphoras are signs of Roman presence in our lands. Nevertheless the origin of Benissa’s name (Banu-Issa) is considered to be Arabic. Even today most of the rural areas of the municipality conserve their Arabic names. This confirms the historian’s theory that points to the presence of an important Arabic population when James 1st “the Conqueror” arrived at Benissa in 1248. After the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609 the land was repopulated by settlers from the Pyrenees,

Catalonia and Aragon. It was in this era that the town’s walls were built. Today only small traces of these walls remain.

Purissima Xiqueta Parish church During the first decade of the 20th century (1902) work began on the construction of the new parish church dedicated to the Puríssima Xiqueta that celebrated the centenary of the laying of its foundation stone in 2002. Thanks to several private donations and the contributions of all the citizens of Benissa the new church was consecrated in 1929, and some years later replaced the San Pedro Apóstol as parish church. The building is of neogothic style with three naves that stands our for its central dome of great beauty, a skylight over the centre of the transept, and the altar, with the shrine containing the painted tablet with the image the Puríssima Xiqueta that is believed to have be painted by the artist Juan de Juanes. During the feast in honour of the Purísima Xiqueta, celebrated every year on the 4th Sunday of April, the shrine is lowered from its place on the altar with the help of an ingenious hydraulic system so that the image can be carried through the streets in the procession. This emotive ceremony is known “La Baixada de la Puríssima” (The lowering of the Virgin) Mediterranean gastronomy Benissa can also be known by way of its flavours and scents. The Valencian gastronomy is completed here through its original and tasty dishes, its spices, seafood, fruits and vegetables, and a special care which turns the food on your table into a special morsel. Names such as “Borreta de melva”, “Bull amb ceba”, “Mullador de pelleta”, “Sang amb ceba”, “Putxero de polp”, “Mullador de sagatxo”, “Coques al calfó i amb mullador” whet everybody’s appetite. The variety of rice dishes is nearly endless. Specially remarkable are “arròs al forn”, “arròs amb fava pelada”, “arròs amb fessols i naps”, “arròs de senyoret”, “arròs a banda” and many more. Hand-made sausages deserve a special mentioned. They have carried both Benissa’s and the Marina’s names all over the nation thanks to their delicious flavours and to the ancient recipes still used by local butchers.

ECOLOGICAL COAST PATH Benissa has a 4km long rocky coastline with cliffs and small coves surrounded by pine trees. An ecotrail runs along the coastline and can be enjoyed throughout the year thanks to the mild climate. The Paseo Ecológico (Eco-Trail) is the best trip along the coast of Benissa. The starting point is the “Tourist Info Benissa Playa - Aula de la Mar” (Tourist Office Sea Rooms) services that operate in the “Casa dels Cent Vents” (House of the Hundred Winds). The trail consists of two routes: south and north, and runs all along the coast with information panels describing local customs and history, the varied flora and geographical aspects of the coastline, and offers an easy and attractive walk.

How to get to Benissa Car: Road access is easy and quick. AP-7 motorway exit 63 leads to the N-332 main road. Fly: Direct flights to Alicante & Valencia (“El Altet” airport 80 Km and “Manises” airport 110 Km.) High winds batter Valencia Region

FIREMEN were kept busy on Monday afternoon when high winds battered the Valencia Region. Reaching speeds of up to 77kph, the wind forced minimum temperatures down by as much as 6C in some areas and blew down billboards. Trees were uprooted, windows were broken and some properties were damaged. Despite the fall in temperatures

many areas registered very warm weather. Jávea hit a high of 23C on Monday along with Benidorm and Alicante while in many other areas the temperature fell to just 16C. There were 30 incidents most of which were in small towns. In most of the cases they had to deal with fallen trees although in one incident part of the facade of a building gave way.

It’s all you need for a great read.

not only top entertainment. rachel´s kitchen now open for top quality dining R achel’s Kitchen is a well known venue and now offers quality home cooked food. Head Chef Alain Cornet arrives at Rachel’s - Not Only Top Entertainment Rachel’s Kitchen now opens for Top Quality Dining. After working as a chef for the last 14 years here in Spain, Alain has taken the challenge of launching a brand new food concept to the very well know Rachel’s Bar. Dinner and Live Entertainment together has a great appeal, having dinner followed by the show and making your night out special and one that you can always remember. Rachel’s is a very well known entertainment venue offering some of the best acts in Benidorm. Live entertainment is available in many venues but Rachel’s have a proven track record for getting some great top acts and providing only the best so you will be guaranteed to have a great night out. Conveniently situated directly opposite the Levante Club Hotel as well as the Melia and Flamingo Oasis, This busy area is probably the most vibrant in the holiday resort with a host of restaurants and entertainment venues making what is now known as the Rincon Strip. Head Chef Alain Cornet came to Spain and has a wealth of experience specialising in European food. He first took the passion for cooking at school but then decided a different route and took the career as a professional DJ travelling all over the world. He then went back to cooking after coming to Spain to live in 1999. Coming to be head chef at Rachel’s is a completely new idea and concept for the busy entertainment bar, now they will form a proper kitchen offering high quality fresh home made dishes with something for everyone. I was lucky to be presented with a mix platter to taste some of what the menu has to offer, something that probably would not of been on my list of first choice was the Val au Vant - light puff pastry filled with Chicken Ragu a creamy mushroom sauce with a hint of spice, a totally different dish that is extremely tasty served with chips, mash or rice. I then tasted the delicate Baby Ribs a unique blend of BBQ and Honey coating with roasted onion the chefs own recipe. Followed by a sample of very tender seasoned Entrecôte

14

Beef Steak, it was moist and succulent an ideal choice with salad and chips. Finally For the first time I had a taste of Belgian Stew - tender chunks of beef in a rich thick tangy sauce just wonderful, something I would recommend to try and ideal to have with either fresh mashed potatoes or rice. At Rachels Kitchen you can have snacks or lunch including a choice of Baguettes - Burgers and Salads that are to die for with a choice of Chicken Ceasar, Cajun Chicken, Nicose and Greek Salad. Main meals to choose from are the most popular favourites that we all tend to love, Lamb Chops, Pork Fillet , Mixed Grill, Salmon Fillet, Chicken Curry, Steak Entrecôte, BBQ & Honey Glazed Spare Ribs all served with fresh mash, chips or rice. Set menus of the day cost only 7.95€ for two course or 8.95 2 for three course. Combined with quality of the fresh ingredients and the presentation and cooking skills of Alain together with the opportunity to enjoy a evening of live entertainment Rachel’s has the recipe for a great night out! And not forgetting the special wine promotion featuring the World Class Winery “Blossom Hill” exclusive to The Weekly Buzz and VISTA CARD with this voucher here you get 2.50€ off a bottle normal price is 12€. Blossom Hill offer a choice of original Californian White Chardonnay - Rose and Fruity Red Wine. So save 2.50€ and enjoy a great meal, quality wine and a night of live entertainment. The latest entertainment line ups include: Shean Foster Conley Angie Greer Kings of Soul The Eagles Dusty Springfield Tribute Soul 2 Soul Amy Winehouse Tribute Soul What - Scott Michael Tony Vincent Carlos Ricky Dale Jo Lloyd Leroy Smokes Lee Jewell Janyssha Lyon Mr Motown Pepe, Vincent and Chef Alain loom look forward to seeing you soon...

What’s Hot and What’s Not tells us.

It’s all you need for a great read.

Owners: What’s your side of the story?

During the next six weeks we hope to have the response from the owners with their comments to the reviews made on Tripadvisor. We welcome Restaurant & Bar owners to have their say, so don’t delay e-mail us to: buzz@vistacostablanca.com Grannies Teahouse C/ San Vincente 8, Benidorm

“Great find”

Reviewed November 5, 2013 On our recent trip to Benidorm we visited Granny’s tea house three times in a week, the second time we had the full English which was a bargain at only 4.99 euros including a big pot of tea (with a quaint tea cosy which you can buy!) and orange juice. The lady running it is very friendly and chatty whilst at the same time your food comes really quickly. I would definitely recommend this place for a cream tea or a breakfast.

“A little gem”

Reviewed November 1, 2013 We stooped here on the last morning of our holiday for a spot of breakfast it was lovely the food was fantastic and very hot the atmosphere was great the owner very friendly and well priced will defentley use again.

“Grannies teahouse or grumpy madhouse”

Reviewed October 9, 2013 My wife and I dropped into Granny’s around 10.30am one morning. It looked just the sort of cosy chintzy place for a decent breakfast and cuppa. “Granny” turned out to be an angry little woman busy banging pots and pans around behind the counter. We approached and she reacted as though we’d stepped as complete strangers into her home private kitchen rather than customers of her business. A mixture of surprise and irritation. She threw up her hands and dashed out into the street holding her hands palm up and looking at the sky. She charged back in loudly enquiring “is it raining out there or something”. We gaped and exchanged glances with other cowed looking customers already in there. Maybe we should have left but we ordered two full english breakfasts and two teas. She barked various choices at us “Beans or tomato?” etc etc and then rushed off to do the banging about thing with the pots and pans. We sat and waited and watched as two men came in and innocently approached her counter. Before they could speak she shouted at them to sit down and wait to be served. They looked taken aback and decided to leave. The angry woman watched them go and gave out a “huh” of what could only be described as sneering derision. She eventually brought our order literally slamming down cups, pots, plates etc and at the same time yelling - and I do mean yelling - “help is on its way”. It never came while we were there whatever she meant and we paid up and left. Who on earth ever goes to this woman’s place twice?. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you’ll have an amusing Basil Fawlty type experience it was just rude and unpleasant. Avoid at all costs

Deja Vu C/santa faz 9, Benidorm - old town

“Great food and service”

Reviewed October 26, 2013 I really like it here. The atmosphere is very homely. Me and my mates go every year for slap up meal and drinks. Its like going for your Sunday dinner at your nans. Foods great value but make sure you book or you’ll never get a table.

“You get what you pay for”

Reviewed October 31, 2013 My friend and I were wandering round old town looking for a place to eat Sunday evening, as this restaurant is very close to our hotel we decided to book a table, the lady suggested we leave it until about 21.00 as they were booked up earlier , this we were happy to do. We arrived and were given a small table as there we just the two of us the waiter gave us the menus with the Sunday special for €9.50 suggested, this seemed on the face of it good value compared to other places hence we both ordered from said menu. The meal came with 1/2 bottle of wine or water my friend preferred to buy a beer but as I like wine I thought I would give it a go problem was it arrived in a glass jug so I had no idea how many dregs of bottles made up this jug either way I doubt if it was a half bottle but was certainly the cheapest end of the market. Now on to the food the first course was onion soup which was passable so I ate mine but my foodie friend said it was all wrong and left 95% of his, the next course I had garlic bread as being veggie choice was that or nothing, again this was passable but very greasy, my friend had the meat patty which he described as very cheap so just cut it up and piled on the side of the plate, in fact when the waiter collected the plates he commented that not much was being eaten. For the main course I had a veggie lasagne which to be fair was just ok and very small compared to others I have had in Benidorm and the Uk, for his main course my friend had the meat option and did eat some of this but as it comes with mash (which he did not know), he left that a selection of veg was served which my friend was convinced were out of packets and not fresh but I thought they were quite edible. We both had apple crumble for dessert which again was ok but the apples seemed tinned. Overall if you do not mind basic food and are possibly on a budget this is the place to go as despite the review given here less critical people would be fine but as a veggie they are one of the worst places for choice I have come across so far in Old town, although given what you pay €9.50 its fair value.

Very Good Fandango Pau Casals, 10, El Albir

“Wonderful Food”

Reviewed 21October 2013 Beautiful food, great service and lovely relaxed atmosphere. A gem of a place and well worth a visit , we enjoyed it so much we had to go back for second visit during our weeks holiday. Wine was lovely and price very reasonable for quality of food.

“A Very Special Dining Experience at a low cost”

Reviewed 10 September 2013 After 6 months in Wales, it was nice to get back to Albir to experience the Dining at Fandangos. We find we do not go out in Wales very much any more, as no one compares to Manuel’s cooking. Nothing is too much trouble, & if you want something that’s not on the menu you only have to ask. The wine is of a very good quality & very cheap compared to the prices you pay in a restaurant at home. Three courses from 12 euros, you pay the price by your choice of main, your starter & desert is thrown in, together with bread & allioli & a little bite of something from the chef. The staff are so friendly & can not do too much for you to make it a great dining experience.

“Great entrecote, worst service”

Reviewed 21 June 2013 After staying in the entrance room for roughly 2 minutes, we were finally greeted by the waitress. We were seated outside at our choice, and another waiter quickly came to take our drinks. Once he came back to take our meal order, we were told they were out of our first choice of food. After explaining that without our first choice of food, we would leave, he went away to talk to the chef. Coming back he said there had been a miscommunication between him and the chef, who he bad-mouthed, we were able to order our entrecotes. Nothing bad at all to say about the entrecote. It was in fact, great. After our main course meal, we asked to be seated inside for desserts, as it was cold outside. Once re-seated, it took about 8 to 10 minutes before the waitress realized she had completely forgotten us. Quickly running towards our new table, we were given our choices of desserts, which also took longer than we felt necessary. Instantly upon receiving our chocolate mousses, we asked for the check, as we felt we did not want to overstay our welcome. This, too, took longer than it should have. Great entrecote, the staff need to improve on their customer service.

Hair elastics – these are essential. I am always wearing one on my wrist, but they can stretch out or break, and you never know when you’ll need another one.. 2. A chic water bottle. Anyone who knows me knows that I constantly have a water bottle on me; I try to drink at least 30 oz. of water a day. Staying hydrated is incredibly good for your skin and maintaining a healthy diet 3. A tube of Le Volume De Chanel mascara. Available at Nordstrom, I highly recommend this mascara! Physically writing things down helps me process and remember all of the important dates and events – and yes, I do color code it. 5. A bottle of the season’s best nail polish: This fall my go-to nail color is Essie’s After School Boy Blazer. It is such a rich and dark navy that matches everything. I keep it in my bag if and when the dreaded chipped nail appears. Nothing makes me feel more put together than a fresh manicure.

Alicante amnesty

ALICANTE council tax councillor Juan Seva said this week that he will be applying an amnesty on all property owners who have carried out unlicensed modifications to their homes if they come forward and declare the work and pay a flat rate €240 fine over four years. The aim of the council is to get all unlicensed work registered and oblige people to pay the correct IBI taxes. Sr Seva said the council has

buzz@vistacostablanca.com

no idea at all how many people have carried out structural changes to their properties but he hoped that by applying the amnesty they will come forward voluntarily and declare the work, which will in turn generate more income for the council. He went on to say that the amnesty affects all kinds of properties that have been subjected to illegal alterations from homes to offices and shops as well as warehouses.

Alicante's white elephants

Four municipal installations in Alicante that were constructed amid much fanfare have remained closed due to a lack of funds to open and maintain them. Three of the facilities were built using money provided by the former socialist government under its Plan E and Confianza plans. The most expensive of these projects was the indoor swimming pool that was built on Vía Parque close to Lo Morant Park. At a cost of €3.8 million the project, which also includes a gymnasium, was finished in September 2011, but since then it has never been used due to the cost of maintaining it. Alicante council does not have the €800,000 needed to pay for staff and maintenance and for the past two years it has been trying to get a private company to take it on.

Your weekly Horoscope ARIES

The Sun is rising on a fascinating future at the start of the week. You have a bizarre sense of double vision: You see yourself in the present and, simultaneously, you see where you want to be. Being alone is okay with you. Tuesday and Wednesday you hit an emotional speed bump - your dreams are rich and confusing, and even the simplest tasks seem impossible - but Thursday and Friday mark a return to form. Someone blurts out a wild idea and you seize it. People naturally want to follow your lead - more people every day. The weekend’s packed.

CANCER

The disconnect you sense on Monday is particularly annoying because you can tell that this other person is in the mood to talk; you’re just striking out on the specifics. You want to talk about how you feel; they want to talk about money. It isn’t until Tuesday and Wednesday that you feel in-tune with others. All week long it’s important that you don’t get riled up, that you allow events to take their course, because take their course they will. Think of Thursday and Friday as an exercise in taking your time and thinking before speaking - a good warm-up for your social weekend.

LIBRA

‘Love is life,’ wrote the Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy - and it rings true. It’s hard to think of a better definition of life, especially this week. Monday is more loaded with syrupy sweetness than a stack of pancakes. Tuesday and Wednesday return you to your daily routine, full of minor victories, everyday setbacks, etc., but the end of the week is (once again) completely about relationships. Including romantic ones. You are more in control of your life than it may seem on Thursday and Friday, and more at ease than you’ve been in ages this weekend.

CAPRICORN

No matter how flawless a sales pitch seems on Monday, now is probably not the time. (In fact, the more flawless it seems, the more wary you should be.) Tuesday and Wednesday you’re a lot more interested in creative projects - making music, making art, writing letters to people - than in making money. These activities draw you out in a way that feels good right now. Thursday and Friday find you a bit lost in the slow, fraught dynamics of a family situation, but Saturday and Sunday are a pleasure (especially if you do something outdoors).

TAURUS

The static electricity might become unbearable on Monday. Everyone’s inadvertently shocking everyone else. In a different mood you’d find this funny, but now it’s driving you crazy. The best thing to do? Spend Tuesday and Wednesday around people who wouldn’t drive you nuts if they tried, people whose every gesture you anticipate. In other words, people you adore. Thursday and Friday, don’t jump head-first (or feet-first, for that matter) into anything. Take your time. Test the waters first. This weekend is magical and decadent.

LEO

James Joyce once said, ‘Nations have their ego, just like individuals.’ This resonates on Monday because the power struggle at hand seems to have the gravity of international conflict, even though it’s really just about you and someone else not seeing eye to eye. Tuesday and Wednesday, rather focus on whether or not you’re in the right, focus on what others are saying. Just listen. See what you learn. Thursday and Friday are full of plain lessons in odd packages, but this weekend you’re shamelessly radiant.

SCORPIO

‘A family in harmony will prosper in everything,’ so says a Chinese proverb. By this rule, there’s not much prosperity on the horizon at the start of the week, because matters in the family realm are anything but harmonious. Tuesday and Wednesday you view the current difficulties as an opportunity to be creative, to dream up a silver-bullet solution; but this is not a cartoon. The truth is, everything might get worse (on Thursday and Friday) before it gets better (this weekend). Whatever happens, remember that compromise is a powerful tool. Use it wisely.

AQUARIOUS

You are drawn toward someone like a moth toward a flame on Monday - although chances are, this attraction isn’t going to end with you burning to a crisp. (How hot could this person be?) There may or may not be romantic content to your attraction; nevertheless, they will be all you can think about. Tuesday and Wednesday find you thinking about yourself (and your wallet) before anything else, but Thursday and Friday your thoughts are rich, epic and full of people. This weekend, someone accuses you of being eccentric. You enjoy this accusation.

GEMINI

You’re thinking like a serious philosopher on Monday - although you’re trying not to bore anyone. You like being around people who are nothing like you, who don’t see things the same way, who’ve had different experiences than you’ve had. You enjoy a fresh perspective. Tuesday and Wednesday you’re itching for a change. (Some new clothes? A new career?) Thursday and Friday, put yourself in the path of your most outspoken friends. You’d like to hear their take on things. Communication is a theme this weekend.

VIRGO

You are brilliant at finding ways to be constructive even as you’re cleaning house, redoing the plan, experimenting. You can change the tires on a car while it’s still moving. This is what Monday is like. Don’t be surprised if, on Tuesday or Wednesday, someone offers, ‘Um, can we pull the car over and then finish changing the tires?’ Not a bad idea, when you think about it; no reason to be combative. Sadly, on Thursday and Friday, almost every interaction you have is combative. But you leave work happy on Friday. You have a sense this weekend’s going to be good.

SAGITTARIUS

You get things the first time around on Monday. Others need the basics explained again and again - by which point, you’re totally bored. Think of ways to occupy your mind while everyone else catches up. Tuesday and Wednesday, overactive mental preoccupation may explain why you’re unable to do very basic activities - like eating without spilling on yourself - but Thursday and Friday you’re a superstar in every way. If someone busts out a board game, they’d better be prepared to lose. This weekend, take care of some errands you’ve been ignoring.

PISCIS

It is within your nature to overcommit. You have big dreams and you don’t want to say no to anyone else’s dreams either, but meanwhile you have a family and a job and a social life and - well, when do you expect all this saving-the-world stuff to get done? Tuesday and Wednesday, reconsider your priorities. It’s important to schedule time for sitting in movie theatres and thinking about nothing at all. Thursday and Friday are upside down and bizarre, but the weekend is extremely normal. And relaxing. And full of love.

HAIR LOSS

We all lose around 100 hairs every day. This is completely normal but when hair is falling out in clumps or blocking the plug hole after washing there may be a problem! Many people believe that stress causes hair loss. Stress as such, is not an explanation for hair loss. That said, if you have had any illnesses or major surgery it is not uncommon to lose large amounts of hair about 3-4 months later. This is known as Telogen effluvium. Thyroid disease, both over-active and under-active can cause hair loss. Look out for other symptoms such as tiredness, dry skin, constipation and weight gain, or the opposite, restlessness, excessive perspiration, palpitations and

weight loss. When the thyroid function is stabilized hair will re-grow. Other illnesses that can cause hair loss are diabetes and lupus. Among other things, diabetes can cause weight loss, increased thirst, excessive urination and frequent infections. Hormonal problems can also be a culprit. Imbalances of male or female sex hormones, androgens and oestrogens, can cause hair to fall out. Certain medications may also be responsible such as oral contraceptives, antidepressants, anticoagulants (blood thinners,) blood pressure tablets and medications to treat heart disease. Medications used to treat gout and even vitamin A if taken in too large quantities can also cause excessive hair loss. Anybody who is concerned about hair loss should see their Family Doctor to rule out underlying disease.

Rubella

Rubella (German Measles) is transmitted by coughs and sneezes and is very contagious. It is usually a mild illness, but contracted during pregnancy it can prove devastating to the developing fetus, especially during the first 16 weeks. If infected in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, the developing baby will have a 90% chance of developing ‘Congenital Rubella Syndrome’. Birth defects may include brain damage, deafness, heart defects and cataracts. Most young girls are now immunised in school as part of their routine immunisation programme. However, in about 1:50 girls, the immunisation does not work well and as they go into adulthood their bodies do not have sufficient antibodies to give protection. The only way of knowing if you are protected (rubella

immune) is by having a simple blood test. The ideal time to be tested is before you are pregnant. If you are found not to be immune you can then have the immunisation but you must delay pregnancy for at least a month after the rubella jab. If already pregnant, it is important to have your ‘booking visit’ with the Midwife as soon as possible (8-10 weeks pregnant is ideal). At this initial visit your immunity to rubella will be tested as part of your initial maternity blood tests. If your test shows you to have no antibodies, therefore at risk of rubella, you should keep away from people who might be infected. Once your baby is born, you should then be vaccinated to give you protection in future pregnancies.

It’s all you need for a great read.

Wayne Rooney has single-handedly dragged Manchester United back into the title race.

Rooney was the pick of the players in United's 1-0 win over Premier League leaders Arsenal, setting up Robin van Persie to score the winner against his

former club at Old Trafford. Rooney's 27-minute corner was headed home by Van Persie to give David Moyes a much needed win, closing the gap on the Gunners at the top of the table to just five points. Sky Sports expert Carragher believes Rooney is the reason United still have a chance of defending their Premier League crown. He said: "Rooney is the reason why they're only five points behind this season because United have been poor. "It's not the vintage United we've seen of old and there are a lot of players who haven't performed, but he's the one who's dragged Man United up there, virtually single-handedly at times." Rooney's work-rate was impressive and the England forward was the catalyst in a well-oiled United performance and his endurance impressed Carragher. "You look at the technical players in the opposition Ozil and Ramsey - but Rooney brings that power and endurance, he's a typical Premier League player and that's why he is one of the top players in our league and with Manchester United. "We've spoken a lot this season about partnerships

Carl Froch insists he has no retirement plans The 36-year-old is a three-time world champion and will put his WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles on the line against Groves in Manchester, live on Sky Sports Box Office. "This is my 14th world title fight. That level of motivation comes naturally and there

30

is an amount of pressure whether you are challenger or champion" The Nottingham man pounded out a points victory over Mikkel Kessler in their rematch in May and insists his rivals can forget about him hanging up his gloves in the near future.

and top strikers but I think United have got some of the best strikers in European football and Rooney's right up there with the best of them. His performance today with some of the players on show - he was the best player by a mile. Partnership Most talk this season has been about the striking partnerships at Liverpool (Sturridge and Suarez), or Manchester City (Negredo and Aguero), but Carragher touted United's top two of Rooney and Van Persie as being just as good. "I thought Rooney and Van Persie were brilliant as a partnership today," added Carragher. "Arsene Wenger said before the game that he 'still sees Van Persie as an Arsenal player.' I just think maybe Robin heard that and by looking at his reaction when he scored, compared to last season where he was a lot more respectful; I think he showed today he's a real Manchester United player and this is the club that he's at. "Last year Van Persie was the standout player in the league. Rooney had his problems and was in and out the team. Van Persie's got the goal and we've mentioned all season about striking partnership and United's is as good as any."

challenge Joe Hart for the No 1 spot - although Hodgson has confirmed the Manchester City keeper remains his first choice. Hodgson said: “Joe will start one of the two games, but I don’t think he will start both because I feel it’s important for me to look at one of the other two keepers, possibly both, I haven’t decided yet. But Joe is still our No 1 goalkeeper.

“I would guess it’s more likely he will start against Germany rather than Chile but I don’t wish to be held to that.”

England play Chile at Wembley on Friday November 15 with Germany arriving at the same venue four days later. Hodgson has only one more squad to select after these games - for the friendly against Denmark at Wembley in March - before naming his provisional 30-man party for the World Cup finals in Brazil next summer. Squad: Forster, Hart, Ruddy, Baines, Cahill, Cole, Gibbs, Jagielka, Johnson, Jones, Smalling, Walker, Barkley, Carrick, Cleverley, Gerrard, Henderson, Lallana, Lampard, Milner, Townsend, Wilshere, Defoe, Lambert, Rodriguez, Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck.

Ronaldo's year?

After Cristiano Ronaldo bagged yet another hat-trick for Real Madrid on Saturday, there is a feeling in Spain that it might finally be his year to win the Ballon d'Or. The good citizens of Zurich, where FIFA's number one lair is located, may want to consider stocking up on drinking water, energy bars and tasty looking cats and dogs in case of emergencies. If Cristiano Ronaldo does not win the Ballon d'Or award in January then a hefty part of the population of Madrid will be heading to Switzerland to go medieval on Zurich's booty with an old-fashioned siege and ransack. Treble tops from Ronaldo Pitchforks are set to be waved in a furious manner by those who feel that Ronaldo's immense 2013 is worthy of football's big gong, ahead of Lionel Messi and Frank Ribery, irrespective of the lacklustre performance of the Portuguese poacher's club in the same period. On the completion of Ronaldo's hat-trick against Real Sociedad in a 5-1 win, the Santiago Bernabeu crowd was calling for the player to finally be handed the big prize. That is saying something for a group who took a very long time to warm to the player, despite

the amount of goals he's scored since joining the club in 2009. Whilst Ronaldo will continue to say that the award doesn't matter a hoot to him, that is of course complete nonsense. It matters a huge amount. Especially since the announcement that four other rivals will be on the final shortlist for the ceremony being held in January - an excuse if ever there was to put Neymar on the ticket, as well as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a certain Argentinean and Ribery. After Saturday's victory saw a more balanced Real Madrid for once, Marca plonked Ronaldo on the front cover, with the banner "Cristiano Universe". Although the paper tends to live in that place every day of the year, it was a worthy headline with Ronaldo in particularly devastating form at the moment. The Madrid man has already scored 24 goals this season in La Liga and the Champions League, to make it 62 since the start of 2013. His 19th hat-trick

in La Primera saw Ronaldo reach 225 goals in 216 games in Spain, a truly extraordinary figure in the demanding realm of the modern game. "He is from another world," admitted Carlo Ancelotti, a manager who has seen some decent players in his time. The Revista panel discuss Cristiano Ronaldo It is not just Ronaldo's goalscoring record that is so particularly impressive but also his non-stop commitment and running. Ronaldo never seems to have a lull or a period of iffy form. Unlike Leo Messi, who suffered a hamstring knack against Betis, he never seems to be injured either. As the ever-effusive Tomas Roncero wrote in AS, "It doesn't matter when or where he plays, he puts on a superman cape and flies with the same ambition, the same effort and intensity." However, there is a sense in Spain that no matter what Ronaldo achieves, it simply won't be enough. The recent mocking caricature from Sepp Blatter merely reinforced the feeling in a country that loves a good conspiracy that FIFA (and UEFA, the two groups are interchangeable in any complaint), have if it in for the forward on the grounds that Ronaldo's flashy image is vulgar. As the editor of AS, Alfredo RelaĂąo, wrote on Sunday: "This year it won't be Messi, but Ribery due to the campaign from Bayern". It must be said though, that if image was key to FIFA then the French footballer may not be the most wholesome choice due to his current legal issues.

If you have sales experience and are self-motivated, own your own car and speak Outgoing Ferrari driver Felipe Massa has been handed a F1 lifeline after signing a deal to join Williams for 2014. Felipe Massa is confident he has "chosen the right team" after revealing he held talks with Lotus and McLaren before signing a multi-year deal with Williams. Just two months after being ousted from Ferrari, Massa has opened a new chapter in his F1 career after agreeing to become Valtteri Bottas' new teammate as a replacement for the outgoing Pastor Maldonado. Having proved that he hasn't lost any of his talent, or desire, it appears as if the veteran Brazilian wasn't short of offers as he sought to prolong his decadelong F1 career, with Massa divulging that held talks with Lotus, Sauber, Force India and McLaren before opting for Williams. Massa has no doubts that he both he and Williams can prosper in 2014 despite a troubled campaign in 2013 in which the team have registered just a solitary, lonely point. "I'm very happy to be here and to start a new part of my career with Williams. I had a very long and nice time with Ferrari but now I'm really happy to move to Williams. I have a lot to give to this team," the 32-year-old told Sky Sports News.
