This spring marks 100 years for the Elkington family farm in Bone, Idaho, and 61 years in the registered cattle business. Fellow Breeders, It is our pleasure and honor to welcome all our friends to the annual bull sale. We feel we have a tremendous set of cattle for you this year. We are honored to have you here. We started in the polled Hereford business in 1961 with an FFA project for Keith. This small start grew from one or two bulls a year to what we now produce. We have always carried out a very rigid culling program. We cull based on profitability. Our cows must be productive, heavy milkers and trouble free. We calve the cow herd on the range with little to no help. In addition, our cows must perform and continue to perform. We have 30 Dams of Distinction — that is 15% of the cow herd that calves on time and weans a big calf every year (one of the top 10 herds in the Hereford breed). We believe that having a cow herd that breeds up fast with little cost is an economic advantage to the producer. We now run 200 moderate framed, good doing polled Hereford cows and 60 South Devon cows. We have always based our program on the range man and strive to produce the kind of cattle that will make him money. Our goal is to produce cattle that are reasonably sized at birth and grow rapidly although some may be listed as heifer bulls in the catalog these bulls will work on any cows, the calves will have the performance you need regardless of birth weight. Performance testing has helped our customers and our program as well. We expect our cattle to be thick, easy keeping cattle that will milk heavy, raise a big calf and survive winter, with minimal feed and expense, while breeding back and raising a good calf. Our cattle are efficiency experts. Our severe environment culls inefficient poor fleshing cattle. They raise a good calf with less feed in a drought year that helps the bottom line. We have worked for 61 years and believe that we have a cross section of cattle that you will like. Elkington cattle will produce high performing calves and easy fleshing high producing cows with depth and length that will work anywhere on less feed. Our bulls live in harsh conditions and are developed on a high roughage ration at high elevation between 5,500 and 7,500 feet elevation giving them the needed capacity to breed cows longer into their lives. Our operation has always been a family operation, as it still is. Brent and I are still partners and Layne and his son Eric are an important part of the operation. Keith Elkington Terms: Terms of the sale are cash or check payable during or after the sale and before cattle will be released. Cattle will not be transferred until paid in full. We do understand if you need time to pay or need financing help, contact Keith. Elkington Polled Herefords and South Devons will be retaining a full revenue sharing ¼ semen interest on all bulls, unless stated otherwise. Any semen collected will be completed prior to delivery or loading out. This does not include salvage, all salvage value is the buyers. Sight Unseen Guarantee: We guarantee you to be satisfied with your sight unseen purchase or we will replace the animal with one of equal value if possible, if not we will refund the purchase price. Transportation: Idaho Falls has a good freeway coming from Montana as well as Utah. It is also served by an airport. Delta Airlines, Allegiant Air and United serve the Idaho Falls Airport. Traits You Can Count On at Elkingtons Our goal is to produce cattle that are reasonably sized at birth and grow rapidly although some may be listed as heifer bulls in the catalog these bulls will work on any cows, the calves will have the performance you need regardless of birth weight. Average BW on Hereford bulls selling in this sale is 75 lbs and with most of them being out of short gestation sires with high (+CED EPDs) the calves will wean off as good as the calves that are born at 90 to 100 lbs with less complications at birth.

Warranties: When the bull is sold we no longer take responsibility for death loss. Insurance will be available sale day if interested. We guarantee all animals to be breeders. All bulls have had fertility exams and are guaranteed to be fertile. If you should have a problem, please contact us and we will make it right. We do ask that you let us know within six months and that you take good care of the animal. We do reserve the right to use the bull on a healthy cow to see if she will conceive by him. If the bull does not get the cow with calf, we will replace the bull with one of equal value or credit in a future sale. Delivery: • Free delivery west of the Mississippi on a $4,000 purchase of bulls. Pay half east of the Mississippi on bulls. • Pay up to $250 a head toward delivery on heifer purchases of $2,500 or more nationwide. • Pay half delivery costs on heifers $4,000 or more nationwide. • International cattle will be shipped to an agreeable port. Volume Buyer Discount: A discount of 5% will be offered if any single purchase buys 9 or more head for an average price of $3,000 or more. Pick Up Discount: If you pick up your bull within three days of your purchase, we will discount $50 per bull and $25 per registered heifer lot. This discount excludes commercial females. All bulls will be Trich tested and ready for transfer on sale day. No cattle will be loaded until the sale is completed. You may bring your brand and brand your bull in our chute if you would like. (It might take some extra time sale day but we can try to accommodate.)

• 4G son we use AI on the heifers and turn him out with bigger birth weight cows to correct birth weights. We have several calf crops from him and they have super pigment and low birth with superior growth. On 105 calves Pathfinder 842B has a BW ratio of 97%, a weaning ratio of 104%, and a yearling ratio of 105%. His calves are born light and grow extra good. With WW and YW numbers in the top 5% of the breed his calves put the weight on. A great moderate 4G son that excels in economic traits and pigment to produce excellent calves. POLLED HEREFORD HEIFERS These heifers have been culled at weaning, yearling and breeding time. This is as good a set of heifers. They all are of the caliber we strive to produce. They should produce good calves for their new owners for many years to come. They have never been pushed in their lives just foraged developed, no silage and very little grain mostly oats. They were raised in high altitude pastures on the open range, not on irrigated pastures. They will continue to grow for several years. They were vaccinated with Breed back 10, 8-way, Multimin 90 last spring before breeding. This fall they received Dectomax injectable Clean UP 2, 8 way and Guardian, to prevent scours in their calves. Brisket and PAP: All PAP Tests Are Not Created Equal Know the elevation of the PAP test to evaluate results

Brisket disease affects cattle at higher elevations by over-stressing their heart and lungs, leading to respiratory and even heart failure. The higher the elevation at which cattle have to live, the more stress is placed on their cardio-pulmonary system. The classic sign of brisket disease is swelling of the brisket due to pulmonary edema or fluid build up in the folds of the extra skin in the chest area. Brisket disease often leads to death, but symptoms also include repeated instance of pneumonia and just generally poor-doing cattle. Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) is a measure of how susceptible to brisket disease an animal may be. Cattle with lower PAP are less likely to get brisket. The disease is strongly correlated genetically, meaning that selecting for low PAP in your cows and bulls can reduce the risk in your herd or calf crop. Testing for PAP is not simple. The procedure involves putting a catheter into the left ventricle of the heart, and it has to be performed by a qualified veterinarian. The test gives each animal a score, measured in millimeters of mercury, just like a human blood pressure test. Very low scores would be in the 30s, and very high ones in the 80s or even higher. The lower the score, the lower the PAP of the animal, and the less risk that it will develop or pass on brisket disease. PAP testing is the best tool available for predicting high altitude performance, but it isn’t fool proof. There are many factors that affect a PAP score, including the age of the animal, the elevation at which the test was conducted, how long the cattle were at that elevation prior to the test, the health history of the animal, the stress level of the cattle the day of the test, their specific genetics, their feed, and eventhe weather the day of the test. That’s why a single score can sometimes be misleading, and all PAP scores should be used as guidelines for selecting low risk cattle. Unfortunately, people tend to take the PAP score as an absolute value. If a calf has a score below say 45, they think that is acceptable, without paying too much attention to the details, especially to the elevation at which the test was conducted. PAP testing at lower elevations generally tends to produce lower scores. Of course, the best thing would be to test cattle at the elevation they were going to be used, but that’s not typically practical. For that reason, we have developed a set of guidelines for our cattle, which were tested for PAP at 6,250 Feet, and at 20 months of age. Score 46 – 50 Use at 6,500 ft or lower Score 41 – 45 Use at 8,000 ft or lower Score 40 or lower Use at any elevation Remember, these guidelines are useful for cattle, or cattle that were tested at or around 6,250 feet. If you’re trying to compare PAP scores with cattle tested at a different elevation, you’ll have to account for that difference, realizing that the lower the elevation of the test, the harder it is to predict performance at very high elevations. And like all cattle traits, a dose of common sense should be applied when using PAP scores to select cattle.
