Continuing to Meet the Challenge In this issue we recognize the Dams of Distinction (DOD) and Sires of Distinction (SOD) (See Pages 24 and 28). The DODs are cows that meet the highest standard of production by calving at 2, maintaining a proper calving interval and having a strong nursing ratio. We must always remember why the good Lord put Hereford cattle on earth. They are here as a maternal breed that are known to withstand different environments and produce a good, healthy calf at the end of each season while being pregnant. Congratulations to the producers who have bred and or owned these prestigious cows. While it is very important to recognize the females each year, it may be even more important to recognize the sires of the DODs. With this in mind, the American Hereford Association (AHA) Board voted in 2007 to begin to recognize SODs. A sire qualifies as a SOD when he has produced daughters that have been recognized seven times as DODs. When selecting potential sires to use in an artificial insemination (AI) program, you can find the SODs on the Web by using the “Select if” section of the expected progeny difference (EPD) search. Again, congratulations to the breeders and owners of these prestigious sires. As spring starts, I have a few reminders and requests to share with members: 1) Remember to collect udder scores on all females at calving time.

You can remind yourself about how to properly collect these scores by visiting the “Education Center” at Hereford.org. 2) If you would like to market semen on a bull, please consider the noncertificate AI program. This program allows you to market semen without the hassles of AI certificates. In other words, sell the semen, and when breeders go to register the calves from these sires, they will not need to bother you to purchase an AI certificate. Calves sired by non-certificate bulls can be registered; you just do not need to have an AI certificate to do so. Note: to participate in the programs, bulls still need to be AI permitted. 3) If you have a young sire that you would like to get early proof on, nominate him for the young sire test program. To do so call 816-842-3757 or e-mail jward@hereford.org. 4) Please make plans to attend this year’s Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) convention that will be in Columbia, Mo., June 28-July 1. Registration information and schedules will be available on Hereford.org when they become available. 5) I would like to begin to collect DNA on some of the cosmetic issues that still limit the use of Hereford genetics by some commercial producers. My request is for you
to collect blood into a purple-topped tube on any animals that you have with cancer eye, prolapse or any other problem. We would like to work to find DNA markers that may help select against these problems. In addition to the blood, we would like a picture of the affected animal. A close up of the eye or whatever the problem. Send the blood and photo to me at the AHA office or directly to Jon Beever at the University of Illinois (contact the AHA office for shipping instructions). The final reports on heifer calving rate (HCR) and cow fertility are in the final stages and will be released online and in a future Hereford World issue. Remember that these two traits will be sire model traits that will help with selection for both fertility and stayability. Finally, I would challenge each of you to collect and submit performance data and utilize that data in selection and culling decisions. Commercial producers around the country continue to choose Hereford genetics. With this increased demand comes tremendous responsibility. Every Hereford breeder needs to be stringent with data collection and culling practices. You have worked hard to gain the trust of commercial cattlemen, and now the challenge is to produce the product that they need to stay profitable. Keep up the good work. HW www.hereford.org

Watch for Delegate Nomination Postcards
Hereford breeders who have collected feed intake data are asked to submit the information to the Association. This information includes steers, bulls and heifers. The Association is collecting as much data as possible to put together some discovery and validation populations for genomics. In order to continue to move the breed forward and assure commercial cattlemen that Hereford breeders are proactive in their approach to breed improvement, the Association requests breeders submit DNA on any animals that will be culled due to cosmetic issues such as cancer eye or prolapse. Hall of Fame, Merit nominations due May 1 Nominations for the Hereford Heritage Hall of Fame and Hereford Hall of Merit are due May 1. The Hall of Fame honor recognizes Hereford breeders who have dynamically influenced the direction and advancement of the Hereford breed. Hall of Merit recipients aren’t necessarily Hereford breeders but have, in their own ways, greatly influenced the Hereford breed and the cattle industry. Journagan family donates ranch to Missouri State University Missouri State University announced Feb. 12 that the Journagan family had donated its 3,300-acre ranch with

equipment and facilities, including about 1,000 head of cattle, to the university. The ranch is located just 10 miles south of the Mountain Grove, Mo., campus. The second-largest single private gift in the 104-year history of Missouri State University – in excess of $7 million – will provide almost unlimited opportunities to expand and transform the university’s William H. Darr School of Agriculture, according to Missouri State officials. The first part of the gift was completed in December with the transfer of 243 registered Hereford cows. And with this transfer, Missouri State now has the largest Hereford herd in the country that is associated with a university.
Herefords top San Antonio All-Breed Bull Sale Of the nine breeds represented in the 47 head sold Feb. 10 in San Antonio at the All-Breed Bull and Commercial Heifer Sale, Herefords were the top seven grading bulls and the top sellers. Fourteen Hereford bulls sold for an average of $3,850, compared with an overall average of $2,928, making Hereford the high-selling breed in the bull sale. The top seller and the fourth highest-grading bull, C&M Rambo 8019, sired by GH Rambo 279R, consigned by C&M Herefords, Nara Visa, N.M., sold for $9,000 to Diamond S Cattle Co., Fort Worth. The second high seller and highest-grading bull in the sale was also sired by GH Rambo 279R and also purchased by Diamond S. B&C L1 Rambo 28021 was consigned by B&C Cattle Co., Miami, Texas, and sold for $7,000.

The new summary includes detailed listings on sires from U.S., Canada, Uruguay and Argentina to help producers make informed buying, breeding and other management decisions. A total of 2,214 sires are listed in the summary. There are 938 proven sires, 796 young sires and 181 reference sires from the National Reference Sire Program. The balance of the sires can be found in the carcass section, which is a list of the 783 highest-accuracy bulls for carcass traits.

Celebrating 100 Years of Hereford Publishing This month we continue to commemorate the 100th year of Hereford publishing. The two final issues in volume 1 of the American Hereford Journal were dated April 1 and April 15, 1911. Here are some highlights printed in the April 1, 1911, issue: • Best Gains from Herefords — A four-year Michigan experiment station project proved that whitefaces are the most economical feeders. The project compared Hereford-, Angus- and Shorthorn-sired calves. The Herefords were the most economical and made the most gain for the least cost. • The 1911 National Feeders’ and Breeders’ Show in Fort Worth was reported as the best yet held for the Hereford breed. C.M. Largent, one of the foremost Hereford breeders in Texas at the time, said, “There has never been a greater demand in Texas and throughout the South for purebred bulls than at the present time. We sold 10 times as many bulls as at any former show.” The grand champion steer of all breeds and ages was a Hereford owned and shown by Boog-Scott Bros., Coleman, Texas.

• In an editorial from the editors thanking Hereford breeders for supporting the publication during its first year, the recent success of the Hereford breed was documented. Tips For Navigating the New Site “Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts.” — Arnold Bennett In December the American Hereford Association (AHA) launched its redesigned Web site, Hereford.org. But, just like Bennett said, with change comes a learning curve. The goal of this new Hereford World column is to help users who are having a hard time navigating the new site. User tips If you are having a problem finding something on the site, try these tips to help find it:
The search function — No matter where you are on the site, there is always a search box in the top right hand corner. Simply type in what you are looking for. The search results will give you a list of links where the searched word or phrase can be found.
Quick Links — Also, no matter where you are on the site, there are always quick links at the bottom of the page. You may have to scroll down to view the red bar that says “Quick Links.” Click on the word or the arrow next to the word to reveal the menu of links. Every page on the site is listed here by category. Menu — At the top of every page, there is a menu bar. Here pages are also categorized, and by simply moving your mouse over each category, a more detailed menu of that category’s contents is revealed. For example, from any page on

the site, move your mouse over “Education Center” and click on any of five options within that category.
Frequently asked questions When I click on my old Hereford Web site bookmark, it gives me an error. What’s wrong? The old and new Web sites technically have the same address, www.Hereford.org, but the old site would have bookmarked as www.hereford.org/tailored.aspx. So it’s important to update your bookmark to the new home page, just as www.Hereford.org. Where can I find contact information for AHA staff? Like most pages on the Web site, there are a couple of different ways to get to the staff page. One option is to go to the Seedstock menu and click on “Your Association.” There you will find a page for field staff or office staff with contact information for each member. Another way to get to that page is to go to Quick Links at the bottom of any page and under “Seedstock” there is a link for “Staff.” And still one more way is to type “staff” into the search box at the top of the page and choose the result that best fits what you are looking for.
How do I find AHA members in my area? When you are on the home page, under the Favorites menu there is an option for “AHA Membership Search.” You can also click on “Finding Hereford Genetics” under the Commercial tab on any page. This click will bring up the EPD/ Member inquiry page with a map of the U.S. Click on any state to bring up a list of AHA members in that state. You can also search EPDs or specific animals from this page. This page can also be accessed through the Quick Links at the bottom of the page. Where do I find the membership application and other forms? All forms needed to manage your operation, become a member or register your cattle are in the forms library. To get there, click on “Your Association” under the “Seedstock” tab. Then the menu on the left lists “Forms.” Every form is there in pdf format, plus there’s a link to the forms center for junior members, which includes scholarship applications and contest entry forms. Make Plans for Summer Activities Hello, junior Hereford exhibitors. April is here and the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) is right around the corner. It is time to start thinking about filling out scholarship applications, what contests to participate in, which calves to enter and if you are interested in running for the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) board of directors. Remember that the early bird entry deadline is April 23, and we will once again offer online entries at JrHereford.org. See Page 16 for a schedule of this year’s JNHE. Scholarship deadlines are May 1, so visit JrHereford.org for the applications, guidelines and other JNHE information as it becomes available. Juniors who are interested in running for the NJHA board must submit their applications by May 20. Running for the junior board is a great opportunity and experience for anyone who is interested and loves the Hereford breed. While running, you will meet so many amazing people and new friends that will last for a lifetime, and you will get to see what happens behind the scenes and to appreciate JNHE even more than before. So for those of
you juniors who are interested in running for the junior board, there is still time to get your application in. Visit JrHereford.org for an application and criteria. Also don’t forget about the Program for Reaching Individuals Determined to Excel (PRIDE) Convention Aug. 2-4 in Boise, Idaho. We have a lot of fun and exciting things in store for you. We will tour ranches, learn about being an advocate for the beef industry and even enjoy a white water rafting trip. Registration for PRIDE will open in May, and the deadline for sign-up will be June 25. The cost to attend the leadership convention is $275, and a schedule of events may be found on Page 17 of this issue. Can’t wait to see everyone in Indianapolis and Boise. Travel safely! HW

Spring Is Near After digging out from a snowy winter, we welcome the sure signs of spring. A newborn calf frolicking in the pasture and trees bursting with life are signs the upcoming show season is just around the corner. The Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) is one of the highlights of the show season for many juniors and their families. As families are making preparations for a trip to Indianapolis in July, the National Hereford Women (NHW) organization is also preparing. Members are finalizing plans for scheduling and promoting contests, events and scholarship selections. Contest and scholarship information is available at JrHereford.org. Be sure to take note of application due dates. The NHW strives to make the best even better as it combines the contests and scholarships previously sponsored by both the American Hereford Women (AHW) and National Organization of Poll-ettes (NOP). NHW encourages junior participation and looks forward to a memorable JHNE. The NHW board is also committed to improving communications with members via newsletters, articles in Hereford World and a newly created Web site. Members are encouraged to renew their membership and to promote new memberships. Dues are $20 (equal to previous $10 for AHW plus $10 for NOP), which enables the organization to continue all legacy programs of AHW and NOP. The membership year is Jan. 1 through Dec. 31 and memberships
are considered delinquent after Aug. 10. Life memberships are available at a cost of $400. Members may renew through their state organization or mail dues directly to Susan Rader at 3117 US Hwy 67E, Mt. Vernon, TX 75457. The NHW mission is rooted in the tradition of promoting Hereford cattle, sponsoring youth activities and scholarships, and providing educational and leadership events for women.
Meet NHW board members
Each month we’ll introduce members of the NHW board. We hope you enjoy learning more about our NHW leaders. Shellie Moore Collins is a fifth generation Hereford breeder, raised in southwest Kansas. Her parents, Charlie Shellie and Darla Sutor Moore, engrained their love for Hereford cattle into their children — Dana Pieper, Kevin and Shellie — at an early age. Throughout Shellie’s time in various aspects of the cattle industry — 4-H, FFA, Kansas Junior Livestock Association, NJHA, and livestock judging — her love for and devotion to the Hereford breed and its members have always been hard to miss. Shellie was actively involved in her state association as a director and queen and was the 1999 National Polled Hereford Queen. The following year she was elected to the
NJHA board of directors and served as the 2002-03 president. She was a member of the 19992000 Butler County Community College livestock judging team and the 2002 Texas A&M national champion livestock judging team. At the national livestock judging contest in Louisville, Ky., she was selected as an all-American. Upon graduating from Texas A&M with a degree in agricultural economics in 2003, she obtained her master’s in the same area at Kansas State University in 2005. In April 2006 she married Colby Collins, and they reside on the Collins Ranch in southwest Oklahoma with their daughter, Cierra. Shellie works as an agricultural loan officer for BancFirst, Frederick. Shellie says she is excited about continuing her involvement in the Hereford breed by helping with Junior National Hereford Expo show programs and as NHW treasurer. NHW board member Della Ehlke and her husband, Mark, and daughters Lacey, 22, and Jane’a, 19, own and operate Della Ehlke Herefords in the foothills of the Big Belt Mountains in southwestern Montana. First generation Hereford breeders, Della and Mark also have a group of commercial black Angus cattle. Both daughters attend Montana State University. “We are lucky that they are so close to home, as we rely heavily on their help,” Della says.

In addition to running the ranch, they own and operate a machining and fabrication business with locations in Helena and Missoula. Della has a background in accounting and insurance. She has been involved in the Montana Hereford Association (MHA), serving on the board of directors for six years and as president for two terms. This past year, she was involved in putting together the MHA feeder calf sale. She serves as vice chair on the seedstock committee of the Montana Stockgrowers Association and was a 4-H club leader and secretary/treasurer of the livestock committee for many years.

She loves working with horses and hopes to someday participate in local ranch horse competitions. She also enjoys the outdoors, her dogs and spending time with her family. One of the newest NHW board members is Denise Billman from Newcomerstown, Ohio. Denise was elected to the board last October Denise as the director at-large. Denise and her family have been involved with Hereford cattle for the past 10 years. She has been an active member of the Ohio Hereford Women for eight
years, serving as the director for six years, president two years, and assistant secretary/treasurer for the past two years. Denise, her husband, Reb, and their daughter, Denelle, reside on a small farm with 15 registered Hereford cows. Her son, Derik, is deeply embedded in the Hereford industry with Grassy Run Farms in West Virginia. The Billmans are currently the advisors for the Ohio Buckeye Junior Hereford Association. Denise is also employed full-time as an office manager for a small business, as well as a part-time employee of a national retail store. HW

1,941 Dams of Distinction Honored
The Dams of Distinction program recognizes superior cows in the breed and the cattle producers who manage them based on data submitted to the American Hereford Association (AHA). Efficient, fertile and productive females are the foundation of the most successful cow herds. To be honored as a 2009 Dam of Distinction, a cow must have: 1) Weaned a calf born since Jan. 1, 2008. 2) Produced at least three calves. 3) Initially calved at 30 months of age or less. 4) Had an interval between the first and second calves of no greater than 400 days. In addition, a 370-day calving interval must have been maintained after her second calf. The longer initial calving interval allows breeders to calve 2-year-old heifers prior to the mature cow herd. 5) Had weaning records submitted to the AHA Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR™) Program for every calf produced that was born before June 30, 2009. 6) Had a progeny average 205-day adjusted weaning weight ratio of at least 105. A cow receiving the Dam of Distinction honor is a cow that meets the highest standards of commercial cattle production. The cow must do her job, but also her owner must manage the herd correctly to give her the opportunity to excel. Only a few active cows are recognized. All heifers have the potential to be a Dam of Distinction, but only a small percentage fit the job description of an ideal cow year in and year out. The 2009 Dams of Distinction list recognizes 1,941 Hereford cows from 639 Hereford performance herds in 43 different states. For 29 years Rausch Herefords, Hoven, S.D., has led Hereford breeders with the most cows qualifying as Dams of Distinction. With 306 cows recognized, South Dakota is the top state again this year. 74 Bulls Recognized as Sires of Distinction The Sires of Distinction program recognizes superior Hereford bulls. The American Hereford Association Board of Directors initiated the program in August 2007 to recognize Hereford bulls that sire efficient, fertile and productive females. To be honored as a Sire of Distinction a bull must have produced daughters that have received at least seven Dams of Distinction awards. See Page 24 for the criteria a cow must meet to be recognized as a Dam of Distinction or visit Hereford.org and click “Records/TPR” and select “Recognition Programs.” Bulls attaining the Sire of Distinction status are recognized with “SOD” after their names when doing an animal or EPD inquiry on Hereford.org. Hereford steer wins reserve grand Twelve-year-old Allie Henrie, Wolfforth, Texas, exhibited her 1,320-lb. Hereford steer to the overall reserve grand champion steer title in the junior show at the Fort Worth Stock Show Feb. 4-5, beating approximately 2,600 steers. It’s the first time since 1978 that a Hereford steer has been grand or reserve overall. Henrie also earned a record $200,000 from Coors Distributing Co., Ft. Worth, for the steer in the Sale of Champions Feb. 6. The Henries purchased the September 2009 son of JCS Showtime as a 400-lb. prospect from Jay Carr of Carr Cattle Co., Sudan, Texas, and Eric Drager, of Drager Cattle Co., Texico, N.M., who raised him. When the gavel fell for the final time, 35.5 lots had gathered $189,200 to average $5,329. Four flushes lead the averages at $7,700, 10.5 bulls commanded $6,148 per lot, 18 females graced the ring at an average of $5,147 and three embryos sold for $400 per embryo. Highlights of the 2010 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show.
ore than 6,000 cattle industry members descended on San Antonio, Texas, for the 2010 Cattle Industry Convention and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Trade Show, which began Jan. 27. The event is the largest of its kind in the cattle industry and includes the annual meetings of NCBA, the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, American National CattleWomen, Cattle-Fax and the National Cattlemen’s Foundation. “This is an important time for the future of the beef industry,” Gary Voogt, NCBA president, told thousands of producers attending the opening general session. “Our business and our way of life are under attack. “Our committees will be addressing this and other problems this week as we work toward a unified plan to make the business profitable and sustainable again,” he told attendees. “The buck stops with you. Get after it.” Chairman of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board Lucinda Williams said that the industry needs the beef checkoff system and it needs it to be responsive to everyone in it. She said the industry needs to listen to its customers and it needs to be proactive. “Changes are coming down the pipe that will make us less profitable unless we do something about it now,” she said. However, she added that the consumer will not initially embrace the message and the funding and attacks from anti-meat groups will continue. She said consumers are funding organizations that have an agenda to see the end of animal agriculture. “There are too many people out there for us to tackle alone. We need to strengthen our links with other agriculture groups,” she said. Keynote speaker at the opening session was Chris Gardner, author of the book “The Pursuit of Happyness” and inspiration for the 2006 blockbuster movie of the same name starring Will Smith. “The Pursuit of Happyness” chronicles a compelling rags-to-riches story that found Gardner homeless and trying to raise his son 20 years ago. He landed a trainee position at Dean Witter Reynolds in 1981 and worked his way up, becoming a top earner at Bear Stearns & Co. and starting his own brokerage firm, Gardner Rich LLC in Chicago. The convention concluded Jan. 30 with the NCBA board of directors meeting and the NCBA annual membership meeting. During the meetings, members voted on leadership and policies to ensure the organization’s success in 2010. Steve Foglesong, owner of Black Gold Ranch in Illinois, was officially elected
to succeed Gary Voogt as NCBA’s new president. Foglesong encouraged NCBA members to join him in leading this great industry — and the association — to an even stronger future by getting engaged in the issues and telling their story to the public, as well as lawmakers in Washington, D.C. “Our industry has a great story to tell,” Foglesong said. “Our numbers may be small, but when each of us engages and makes our voice heard, we are a force to be reckoned with.” In a landmark vote, the board approved a new organization structure, as presented by the governance task force. This board action puts in motion the creation of a new governance structure, which would feature a smaller board of directors and a new House of Delegates that would include the organization’s state affiliates, state beef councils, industry/breed organizations and product/allied industry councils. The Federation of State Beef Councils would be housed within the House of Delegates and would continue to conduct its federation duties as specified in the Beef Promotion and Research Act & Order. Specifics of the recommendations include: • A board of directors that has 29 members, 26 of whom are elected by the House of Delegates. The board, which has legal and fiduciary responsibility for the organization; • A House of Delegates with a total of 250 votes. Of those votes 106 would go to state beef councils, 106 to state affiliates and 38 to industry and breed organizations, as well as the allied industry/ product council; • The Federation of State Beef Councils within the House of Delegates that elects a chair and vice chair and the eight other members to the Beef Promotion Operating Committee; • Committees approved by that board that would make proposals to the House of Delegates. committees would be comprised of NCBA members, members of member organizations and/or invited guests. The NCBA board also demonstrated confidence in NCBA by voting unanimously to approve a dues increase to help ensure the organization is on sound financial footing. Dues now start at $100 for cow-calf members. Feeder assessments increased from 10 cents to 12.5 cents per head. Earlier in the week, the Allied Industry Council also expressed its support of NCBA by voting to increase its member dues from $17,500 to $25,000. In addition to structural changes, members approved a number of policy recommendations to guide NCBA efforts in Washington, D.C., in 2010. In the area of federal lands, property rights and land management, members approved policy calling for reform of the Equal Access to Justice Act (EAJA). While EAJA was established by Congress to ensure that individuals, small businesses or publicinterest groups with limited financial resources could seek judicial recourse from unreasonable government actions, a lack of federal oversight has allowed the Act to be abused, particularly by environmental-activist organizations that often target farmers and ranchers under the guise of “public interest.” In a six-year period, non-profit environmental groups have filed more than 1,500 lawsuits, and, in turn, the federal government has paid out billions in taxpayer dollars in settlements and legal fees under EAJA and other fee-shifting statutes in cases against the U.S. government. Also with regards to federal lands, members approved policy to address the growing problem of wild horse and burro overpopulation, which has contributed to range degradation and reductions in biodiversity and livestock productivity. The policy calls for a comprehensive program — including fertility control, sex ratios and other humane means of herd reduction — in accordance with the management options authorized to be used by the Bureau of Land Management. With regard to international markets, members passed policy calling on NCBA to urge Congress to immediately ratify www.hereford.org
the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) — one of the most important bilateral trade agreements in the history of the U.S. beef industry. According to South Korean Economic Minister Choi, who addressed attendees at the week’s economic markets committee meeting, U.S. competitors such as Australia are well on their way to finalizing free-trade agreements with Korea, putting U.S. competitiveness at risk for years to come. In the area of cattle health, NCBA will pursue priorities and strategies regarding both the modification of the National Brucellosis Eradication Program and the eradication of brucellosis from the Greater Yellowstone Area. New policy also directs NCBA to work to maintain producers’ ability to keep their cattle healthy through the use of approved antibiotics. At press time all policies adopted were subject to approval by more than 30,000 NCBA members nationwide. Convention results became official after a mail-in ballot process concluded in March.
In other news former NCBA Vice President Bill Donald of Montana was confirmed as the new president-elect, and former Federation Division Chairman J.D. Alexander of Nebraska was elected to succeed Donald as vice president. Foglesong ended the convention with his outlook for 2010. Despite the very real challenges facing the industry — including an over-reaching federal government and increasing attacks by activist groups — he said he’s optimistic about the year ahead. “We have a nation of bright and professional agriculturalists who are ready to meet demand when it rebounds. And we have a noble profession: feeding people here at home and around the world. Cattle supply decline to continue in 2010 Cattle supplies in 2010 should decline another 1 to 1.5% in 2010, Randy Blach, Cattle-Fax chief operating officer, told attendees of the 2010 Cattle Industry Convention in San Antonio, Texas. At the same time, beef demand will continue to be impacted by a weak economy and high unemployment. Nevertheless, 2010 overall “should be a better year for the beef industry,” said Blach, with beef exports expected to rise and fed cattle slaughter totals expected to decrease. “Demand remains the biggest challenge for the beef industry in 2010,” Blach said. “Though the supply situation is very bullish, demand must stabilize in order for prices to turn significantly higher.” Fed cattle slaughter totals are expected to be down 2% in 2010, and cow slaughter totals should decline by nearly 9%. Average carcass weights are forecast to increase slightly, and beef production is projected to be down 2.8%. Per capita net beef supplies are expected to be down 4% due to an expected increase in beef exports and smaller beef production. In 2010, U.S. beef exports are forecast to increase to South Korea and, to a lesser extent, Japan and Vietnam. U.S. beef exports in 2010 are expected to rise by about 8% compared to 2009. In terms of feedgrains, total U.S. corn production could decrease, as U.S. corn supplies are record large at an estimated 14.83 billion bushels for the 2009-10 marketing year. U.S. soybean supplies are up more than 10% compared to last year — the second highest level on record — while soybean acreage is expected to be near 79 million acres. Spot corn futures prices are forecast to average near $3.75/bu in 2010, near steady with 2009, and the combination of bumper corn and soybean crops, as well as the sharp decline in winter wheat acreage, has lessened the need for an acreage battle this spring.
