LETTER FROM THE FOUNDATION DIRECTOR Growth is in the air at the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) and what an incredible year we have experienced as we work together to grow funds and opportunities for the next generation. In June, I celebrated my 25th year with the American Hereford Association (AHA) and I have spent the last 15 years working to grow the foundation and junior programs. What a journey it has been to be a part of growing something so special and building our pillars of scholarship, leadership, education and research. It has been said that really good things take time to grow. Some of the best advice I was given early on in this part of my career, was that successful fundraising did not happen overnight. However, with patience and staying the course and cultivating meaningful relationships, each gift would add up over time and start to make a big difference. That difference making is happening now and how rewarding it is to experience the difference among the Hereford young people that are engaged in all aspects of the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA). The foundation has been blessed with a loyal network of donors and board members that are vested for the long haul in seeing the foundation flourish for generations. Many of the same people that helped to lay the foundation for HYFA’s pillars are still an integral part of our success story today. Combine these cornerstone donors with new partners all along the way that bring new passions and creative energy and big things happen. New endowments, next level leadership opportunities, more scholarships and real-world educational programs are just a few of the big things happening at HYFA. It thrills me to report that fiscal year 2022-23 saw an increase of $1.4 million in net assets and a year end mark of $6.3 million. The board of directors and staff continue our relationship with UMB Bank’s Trust Department as they oversee all of the accounting and manage the growing investment portfolio. Even amidst some peaks and valleys in the market, the total portfolio performance since the fund’s inception in 2005 shows a 6.35 percent return, keeping in line with HYFA’s investment policy, ensuring that all of our scholarships and endowments are protected for perpetuity. Last December, HYFA embarked on a new Season of Giving annual campaign and the outpouring of support as we unlocked challenge donations for all of the foundation’s pillars was incredible. In the first year, $135,000 was generated from more than 100 donors and these funds went right to work providing educational and leadership opportunities as well as strengthening current research programs. The Foundation One Campaign is another way that HYFA supporters have rallied around our mission and it is neat to see this campaign continue to grow as a way for organizations, families and ranches to show their support through a percentage of sale proceeds. One of the strategies in the AHA’s latest strategic plan includes building a pipeline of future leaders. I firmly believe this leadership pipeline starts with the programs offered by HYFA and your investments in the future are putting leadership in action across the foundation’s pillars. In this sometimes crazy world we live in, the future needs leaders from rural America to step up and lead with integrity, no matter what industry they are in. The NJHA members of today are those leaders of tomorrow and it does my heart good to know that HYFA is playing a part in building up our young people. The foundation is committed to the future and the following pages of the annual report take a much deeper dive into the pillars and the programs that make up HYFA’s story. One of the most important parts of our story is our donors and supporters and for that we say THANK YOU. Thank you for your belief in our mission, thank you for being part of our growth and thank you for sharing your legacy with HYFA. We invite you all to continue to GROW with us in the new year and be a part of the difference being made in breed research and changing the lives of young people. Onward and upward we go. SINCERELY,

ENDOWING THE FUTURE The Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) stands strong and tall on its pillars of scholarship, leadership, research and education. HYFA’s newest endowment — the GKB Cattle Youth Endowment — powered by GKB Cattle, Desdemona, Texas, is a monumental gift that bolsters HYFA’s sturdy pillars and provides endless opportunities for Hereford youth to build their cow herds and develop leadership skills for a prosperous future. Gary and Kathy Buchholz, owners of GKB Cattle, have deep roots in the cattle industry. Their generosity through the new GKB Cattle Youth Endowment will be instrumental in cultivating a pipeline of leaders through the ranks of the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) for years to come. The bred-and-owned female show is a true highlight of the VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE), and thanks to Gary and Kathy, the 2023 bred-and-owned female show in Madison, Wis., featured the first-ever selection of the top five overall females, with the grand champion exhibitor, Maddie O’Leary of Texas, winning a trailer courtesy of GKB Cattle. In addition to powering the bred-andowned female show, GKB’s endowment will also fund the annual BOLD Leadership Conference, hosted at GKB Cattle’s Hi Point Ranch. Additionally, the funds will assist the NJHA board of directors as they work to represent the breed at leadership and educational events across the country. The endowment will be built over the next five years and sets the stage for great things to come at the JNHE and NJHA’s leadership programs. The BOLD Conference, will be entering its third year this spring, and is already making a huge difference in the lives of the young attendees. Gary and Kathy open their ranch and roll out the red carpet for young leaders. “From the moment I got there, I was laughing and having fun with my peers, but I was also challenged to think of what my future looks like and how to achieve it,” said Lauren Jones, BOLD attendee, Darlington, Wis. “We are truly blessed to be in this breed that gives so much support to the youth because
they know, we’re next up,” said Bryden Barber, BOLD attendee from Channing, Texas. Gary and Kathy know these young people are the next in line to lead our industry and country. The couple is quick to credit the people they are today to their leadership experiences as youth. The lessons they learned through those experiences helped build GKB Cattle into one of the most prominent multi-breed seedstock operations in the country and created unmatched passion for youth and giving back. Gary and Kathy have a tremendous passion for helping young people succeed. Some of their greatest joys in life come from seeing the youth of the cattle industry thrive and grow — wherever their career paths may take them. Prior to building GKB Cattle to its current lofty industry position, Gary was an agricultural teacher in his early years, helping countless youth get their start in the industry. Kathy, a fourth generation West Texas rancher, grew up attending the Texas Junior Hereford Association and American Junior Hereford Shows and National Conventions with her family. Together, the couple has served two past terms as NJHA advisors, fueling a passion that is now leaving a lasting legacy. In 2014, GKB Cattle offered the Lot 1 Foundation Female at the National Western Stock Show Mile High Night Sale. This donation started the GKB Super States Award, which is awarded at each JNHE to the highest placing states in the show and the educational contests. Kathy is an active member on the HYFA board of directors, and the board relies heavily on her leadership as they bring new junior programs to fruition and work to cultivate the next generation of donors. The GKB Cattle Youth Endowment will make a difference in the lives of young people, for years to come. For this, we are forever grateful. The foundation owes a great deal of gratitude to Gary and Kathy for sharing their legacy with the NJHA and giving young people the opportunities of a lifetime. GKB Cattle has paved the way for success, and the journey is just beginning.

HONORING THE VANIER FAMILY LEGACY In 2008, the late Jack and Donna Vanier of CK Ranch, Brookville, Kan., established the Vanier Family Scholarship Program through the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA). HYFA proudly carries on Jack and Donna’s legacy by awarding 10 scholarships in the Vanier family’s name each fall. Thanks to the Vanier family’s philanthropy over the years, upwards of $800,000 has been awarded to more than 80 National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members. Jack passed away Feb. 10, 2023. He was a pillar of the Hereford breed and instrumental in the creation of a firm foundation for young people in the Hereford family. The Vanier family name and HYFA are synonymous with supporting Hereford youth, and over their lifetime, Jack and Donna humbly gave so much to so many. HYFA is built on the pillars of scholarship, leadership, research and education, and the foundation is so grateful to Jack and Donna Vanier and their family for all they have given as they helped pave the way for youth in agriculture through scholarship and education. Calah Covey was one of the first recipients of the $10,000 Vanier family scholarships in 2016. “This scholarship not only helped me financially, but gave me confidence because the Vanier family chose to invest $10,000 towards my education and career goals,” said Covey.
Jack’s family said it best: “His contributions to agriculture, the livestock industry, to Kansas State University and to all the organizations and people he touched are many and significant. “The generosity of this family was extremely humbling for me, because I felt like I was awarded this prestigious scholarship, not because of how I’ve started in the Hereford industry, but instead because of how they must have projected that I could contribute later in life,” said Austin Cook, a 2020 recipient of a $10,000 Vanier family scholarship. But it was by living his life the way he did that marks the profound contribution Jack Vanier made to our greater society, the rural culture and a way of life worth preserving that will stand out. He was a patriarch, touching many lives through scholarship, mentorship and stewardship and for that, we will miss him as we continue to carry out the legacy that he laid. “To the Vanier family, thank you for your generosity and adamant support of Hereford youth,” said Megan Underwood, recipient of the Vanier family scholarship in both 2020 and 2022. “You have truly changed the lives of so many and the legacy of Jack and Donna will continue to live on as we celebrate their contributions for years to come.”

Sixty-seven junior members from 15 different states gathered in Columbus, Ohio, for the 2023 Faces of Leadership Conference, hosted by the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) July 23-26. The theme of the conference was “Prepare You for Your Future,” with threads of connecting consumer perspectives to the livestock industry, including touring and working with the Ohio State University (OSU) meat science department, listening to speakers from all walks of the food industry sector and enjoying exciting adventures at the Columbus Zoo and Zoombezi Water Park, and a barn dance to finish the event. “Leadership is influence, and we create that influence by building relationships,” said Marlene Eick, 2023 conference speaker. The first day of the event kicked off with two incredible presenters, Eddie Slowikowski and Marlene Eick. Like the theme of the conference and the different leadership skills learned, juniors were encouraged to remember how their influence impacts others. “I love that Hereford cattle is what connects us all and brings us all here, but then it’s so much more than that, there’s so much more to expect,” said Kaylee Lunsford, Fort Scott, Kan. A tour of the historic OSU football stadium brought the excitement of juniors to the forefront, as they stood on the field gazing up at the stadium seats. An even more special moment followed, as Gene Smith, OSU athletics director, spoke on leadership in young people, an investment he has made a career of. An afternoon spent with Select Sires Inc., tapped into what the industry searches for when hiring. “One of the things I like to say about young people when I recommend them, is that they’re not afraid to work,” said Brian House, vice president, beef program and product manager for Select Sires Inc. “The influence and hard work of the juniors in the NJHA are what set them apart from others in the career field.” The Faces of Leadership conference is made possible by the Coley-Malir Leadership Endowment, through the Hereford Youth Foundation of America. Rick Malir and Bonnie Coley-Malir hosted the attendees of this year’s conference throughout the event. Malir, president and founder of City Barbecue, was one of the closing speakers at OSU, and said, “What I hope you can take from this conference, is to dream just a little bit bigger, and to know that there’s a lot of different opportunities out there.”

Twenty-one National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members were selected to accompany six NJHA Board of Directors at the second Building On Leadership Development (BOLD) Conference, Desdemona, Texas, March 23-26. This elite leadership retreat was hosted at Hi Point Ranch, by Gary and Kathy Buchholz, GKB Cattle. The NJHA Board of Directors created BOLD for college-aged junior Hereford members seeking opportunities to expand their leadership skills. BOLD is geared toward college and career focused junior members, providing them with a personalized learning experience, focused on improving their leadership, providing career opportunities and cultivating life-long relationships. This conference has quickly become a new staple of the NJHA, as juniors leave empowered for their future. “While I always hope that our juniors take what they learn to heart and apply it to their daily lives, there is one thing I hope they remember: never compare yourself and your situation to those around you,” Tar Tut, NJHA Leadership Chair said. “During a round table with Terri Barber, Elanco Animal Health, she shared that comparison is the thief of joy. That struck a chord with me, and I hope our juniors continue to run their own race, at their own pace.” Representatives from CHB were there with the juniors, and taught them how to cut their own steaks and prepare for proper grilling techniques. On day two, they were welcomed by Gary and Kathy Buchholz to Hi Point Ranch, followed by an inspirational message from keynote speaker Kelly Barnes, and workshops designed and hosted by the NJHA Board of Directors leadership team. These sessions focused on who you are as a leader, the type of leader you want to be and the legacy you want to leave. The final day started with panel conversations hosting different career professionals from GKB Cattle, Elanco Animal Health, Priefert and the American Hereford Association (AHA). From there, juniors participated in mock interviews and resume reviews to help prepare them for their future careers. Tours of the different GKB Cattle operations were held both days, exposing attendees to different aspects of the industry. BOLD is an annual leadership opportunity and is scheduled for April 4–7, 2024. Junior members ages 14 –22 looking to expand their leadership skills are invited to attend the 2024 Faces of Leadership Conference scheduled for July 28-31 in Fort Worth, Texas.

OFFERING REAL WORLD EDUCATION NJHA FED STEER SHOOTOUT

This year’s National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) Fed Steer Shootout program had 207 head of Hereford and Hereford-influenced feeder cattle from 67 participants and 18 states. For the third year, a field day PARTICIPANTS was sponsored in the spring for participants and others at the HRC Feed Yards in Scott City, Kan. More than 100 people attended the NJHA Fed Steer Shootout Field Day, including nine-year old Rett Blume, Pierre, S.D. Having HAVE CATTLE attended since the first field day in 2021, he said, “I would encourage other juniors to get involved, because you learn so much about the process involved in feeding cattle, and therefore feeding people.” ON FEED During the field day, an in-person judging contest was hosted, inviting both the junior and senior age divisions to participate in a meat evaluation and live cattle evaluation. Blume was named the winner of the junior age division and Pecos Worrell, Harper, Texas, took the senior honors. Attendees at the field day had the opportunity to hear from many industry leaders including Cargill Protein North America, HRC Feed Yards and Cattle Fax. Cargill STATES presented carcass value determination and a carcass cutout demonstration. Blume said, “I had a fun time meeting new friends at the field day. I also learned a lot from the Cargill demonstrations, especially the different cuts of meat.” The highlight of each field day, is the ability for participants to walk in the feed yard pens, seeing how their own cattle are performing. While doing so, HRC Feed Yards staff, nutritional consultants and vets, made themselves available to answer questions about the cattle’s performance. Worrell said, “I was so excited to get the opportunity to see how my steers had changed since I dropped them off at the feed yard. Little did I know that the best part was the education program. Getting to talk to the feedlot vet and nutritionist not only helped me for next year’s contest but also feeding carcass steers at home.” Junior members who participate in the NJHA Fed Steer Shootout program have access to a library of educational resources to learn about the beef cattle feeding industry and what happens to the cattle after they move on from a cow-calf operation. A final portfolio project, for those who wish to win scholarships and awards, as well as the title of junior contestant of the year, is completed and presented at the American Hereford Association (AHA) Annual Meeting & Educational Forum each fall. Worrell chose to participate in this portion of the contest as well and was selected as one of the top three to compete in person at the AHA Annual Meeting. “My process for putting together a portfolio was researching the topic and talking to my dad,” said Worrell. “While explaining how my steers performed was my favorite topic, I learned a lot from the internet on the other topics.”

National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members made a mad dash to Madison, Wis., for the 24th annual VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE), July 8-14. More than 800 junior members entered the 24th annual JNHE. Exhibitors showed 551 owned polled females, 220 owned horned females, 277 bred-and-owned females, 37 cow-calf pairs, 72 bred-and-owned bulls and 108 steers under the bright lights of the Alliant Energy Center. This year marks the first time the top-five winners were selected from the bred-and-owned female show. In the past, grand champion and reserve grand champion titles were awarded to two females. Through the GKB Cattle Youth Endowment and Gary and Kathy Buchholz’s generosity, the champion bred-and-owned female exhibitor took home a custom-made Hart Trailer from Stephenville Trailers. The Buchholz’s are no strangers to the JNHE or any of the NJHA youth development programs. From hosting leadership conferences to sponsoring shows, the Buchholz family advocates for youth education and leadership. “My husband and I love to support juniors, and it’s our way of continuing the breed for the future,” says Kathy Buchholz, GKB Cattle, Desdemona, Texas, “To continue to support all of the educational aspects that the National Junior Hereford Association presents to juniors, it has just been a part of my life to help support juniors.” The Buchholz’s have continuously gone above and beyond to support youth programs. The inaugural winner of the trailer was Maddie O’Leary, Weatherford, Texas. Rounding out the top five was Madilyn Norvell, Tuttle, Okla.; Hudson Carter, Stratford, Okla.; Maddie Jenkins, Athens, Texas; and Collin and Landon Deatsman, Leesburg, Ind. Among this monumental moment of the JNHE bred-and-owned female show, more than 500 NJHA members took part in educational and leadership programing throughout the week-long event. Competitions ranged from the Certified Hereford Beef® (CHB) Cooking Challenge and Hereford Bowl to judging and team fitting. HYFA and the National Hereford Women help make these educational opportunities available for participants. Among these contests is also the opportunity to participate in the Bridging the Gap College and Career Fair, to further encourage juniors to develop themselves as individuals and professionals. The 2024 JNHE will be held in Grand Island, Neb., July 6-12, as we celebrate the 25th anniversary with a JNHE that is the “Grand Daddy of ‘Em All.”

RESEARCH PILLAR
DRIVING THE BREED FORWARD HEREFORD RESEARCH FOUNDATION
Since 2009 the Hereford Research Foundation (HRF), a division of the Hereford Youth Foundation of America has helped power breed improvement projects outside the scope of the American Hereford Association (AHA) budget. The research division was developed to support programs that enhance beef cattle production through projects conducted throughout the U.S. in conjunction with universities, private firms and ranches. Extensive time and resources are spent each year by the association to enhance beef cattle production through various ongoing projects and donations to the research pillar help sustain breed research and keep the Hereford breed on the cutting edge. The National Reference Sire Program (NRSP) is the backbone of many Hereford research efforts and is essential for driving the breed forward. Since its inception in 1999, the NRSP has enabled the Hereford breed to identify the genetic merit of young sires faster and more accurately. The program has been the cornerstone for developing new selection tools, validating the efficacy of genomic tools and more. “The accuracy of the predictions is so much more powerful when you have multiple sire progeny observations in large contemporary groups in a true progeny test like this one, compared to onetime snapshots collected in a performance bull test,” explains Shane Bedwell, AHA director of breed improvement and chief operating officer. Olsen Ranches, Harrisburg, Neb., is the longest standing test herd in America and is a valued partner when it comes to documenting breed research. The notion of NRSP started when the Olsens approached the AHA about identifying bulls to use in their commercial Hereford herd. Since then, more than 300 bulls have been tested through NRSP.
HEREFORD YOUTH FOUNDATION OF AMERICA

14
All data has flowed directly into the breed’s genetic evaluation since 1999. NRSP sires influence 7% of the more than the 2 million AHA performance pedigrees. It’s impossible to overestimate the value of the NRSP and the Olsen’s ongoing involvement when it comes to the breed’s rapid genetic progress in key traits. Credit also goes to other NRSP test herds over time, including Amana Farms in Iowa, Mershon Cattle LLC in Missouri, Simplot in Idaho and Stahly Ranch in South Dakota. “This subset of cattle has proven invaluable to the breed in terms of genetic progress and the directions we’ve been able to go, such as the inclusion of feed intake, measuring efficiency and conversion,” Bedwell says. “It has definitely leveraged us with an unmatched data library to continue making progress.” Breed research also happen at the junior level each year and HYFA believes that research and education go hand and hand, especially with the younger generation. Since 2021, Neogen has partnered with the AHA, NJHA and HYFA to offer 100% free DNA testing of animals on-site at the Junior National Hereford Expo. Offered again this year in Madison, Wis., the Neogen DNA Collection Stations have continued to increase the awareness around TSU samples as well as the science behind the process, educating junior members on site and continuing to push forward the research pillar of HYFA within the Hereford Research Foundation. NJHA members also reap the reward of research dollars when it comes to the annual Fed Steer Shootout. Donors like Bar One Ranch, Eugene, Ore., and Texas Star Dance Ranch, Jonesboro, Texas, are committed to the success of this educational program that documents Hereford genetics at the feedlot.
