Creating a Sustainable Community The City of West Buechel, Kentucky is proud to announce the West Buechel Sustainable Communities Initiative. The mission of our initiative is to cultivate projects that foster respect and care for our local residents, sponsor community outreach, and promote the economic development of a progressive city. Cultivating Projects That Foster Respect and Care For Our Local Residents. The City of West Buechel is committed to providing resources for area residents via the following; develop the potential of area youth via strategic community programs and workshops, provide underserved senior residents with the tools needed to be engaged , fully, with twenty-first century technology (basic computer skills, internet access and navigation), in order to prevent disparities. Sponsor Community Outreach (Health and Human Services). In response to improving the quality of life for area residents, the initiative will sponsor community forums, workshops, and symposia that will cover the following; health disparities, violence prevention, community services for the elderly (senior centers), HIV/AIDS Prevention, substance abuse, and community health issues. Promote the Economic Development of a Progressive City. The City of West Buechel is devoted to the economic development of a community that has played an integral role in the growth of Jefferson County. Efforts will go toward supporting the following; cultivating projects that create new jobs and private sector capital, creating new avenues for new industry and entrepreneurship, providing opportunities for the community to capitalize on free trade as well as implement new technologies in the workplace.

Why Do We Need An Initiative? Why does West Buechel, Kentucky need an initiative? West Buechel, Kentucky is a city that has been incorporated since 1952. In the early sixties, and late seventies, the city experienced much economic growth, due to the construction of Showcase Cinemas and Bashford Manor Mall. The cinemas were considered to be the “first suburban movie theatre for the area.” At its height, Bashford Manor housed over eighty stores and contributed to West Buechel’s economic vitality.
WHY?
In the early nineties, West Buechel experienced an economic downfall, with the closing of many area businesses. West Buechel’s economic troubles resulted in the closing of Bashford Manor in 2003. The Cinemas closed soon after, in September of 2004. The city has since implemented revitalization efforts which have witnessed the development of a new Super Wal-Mart and a Lowe’s Home Improvement store, however, there is still room for the city to flourish and compete on a scale that will garner more substantive economic growth. Here are some facts to consider: 7.5% of West Buechel’s residents are over the age of 65 (2000 Census). The senior population is reaching ten percent of the total city population, therefore there is a need for increased services and resources for the city’s seniors. 22.5% of area residents under the age of 18 live below the poverty line (2000 Census). The West Buechel Community Center will provide strategic programming for community via arts educational programming and recreational activities. It is time to help develop the potential of area youth who are facing adversity. The City of West Buechel, sits in a county that saw employment drop from 1.5% in 2006 to -0.3% in 2009. (Jefferson County Profile/ Epodunk) At the time of the 2000 census, the per capita income in West Buechel was $16,562, compared with $21,587 nationally. (2000 Census) As a city located in Jefferson County, West Buechel would like to fall in step with Louisville’s Healthy Hometown Movement which envisions a community-wide culture where healthy eating and active living are the norm and fosters an environment that promotes increased physical activity, better nutrition, healthy public policy and access to needed resources.
