Editors Notes Matthew Armitage I have had a unique experience this year of being able to put together the 2014/15 yearbook, whilst also being SCDO. I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to this yearbook, I really couldn’t have done it without you, so whether you submitted a profile, a sport/society article or just some photo’s to stick in, a huge thank you! There has been so much activity in College this final term and fitting the creation of this yearbook in has been a bit of a struggle, but after a tireless last week I hope that I have managed to accumulate something together which will be enjoyable to all! Thank you to everyone who bought a yearbook too, I hope your time at Butler was just as special as mine and is something which you remember forever! Enjoy!
A word from the Principle Adrian Simpson We come to the end of another academic year and we have the opportunity to reflect on the successes across the College as we see the undergraduate class of 2015 pass through their graduation ceremonies to join our Butler Alumni. As ever, there has been more happening across the year than can possibly be reflected in a short piece. For example, our charities committee was outstanding this year, raising over £5000 for Grace House through auctions, rag raids and the fashion show. We were outstanding in sports with trophies for both men’s and women’s football, our cricket team taking on an beating various university sides and many teams winning leagues and being promoted. In addition this year it was great to see the close partnership between our students and our operations staff was rewarded with the Best Bar None award for outstanding college bar where our particular emphasis on the welfare provision and the development of an environment for responsible drinking. That same operations team also made an outstanding contribution to ensuring that our venture of housing 50 students at Ushaw College was a success. The students themselves formed a tightly knit community at Ushaw and the extra numbers meant that our postgraduate community had the critical mass to have much more independent activity during the year. And, of course, STAB clearly enjoyed the access to a professional stage and such an atmospheric location. In addition to our sporting and charities successes, the JCR also developed yet more ways for students to get involved: for example, the new music group, Pitch Please, has engaged more male students in singing than we’ve had in previous groups and they justifiably won our Best New Society award. We also had more scholarly activity with fellows from Hong Kong, the US and Grenada and talks as diverse as dyslexia, supercomputers, medicine in space and the slave trade, as well as the opportunity for our students to grill the local candidates just before the general election. This yearbook embodies the efforts of our student body as a whole to further the opportunities for all in Butler. I want to record here my thanks to everyone who has aided that aim: every club and society president and captain who has organised events, every musician who has played at concerts, every mentor, every speaker at a scholars’ supper, every member of staff and simply every person who has made a difference. But particularly, my thanks to our common room presidents Lyndsey, Tim and Siri who have lead such magnificent organisations which give rise to all this activity.
A word from the Vice-Principle Karen Langdon Thank you – for giving me the opportunity to get to know you and be part of some inspiring events. A couple of highlights for me include the Christmas Concert (I gained a new member for my choir in the City – fellow lusty singer) and Burns night in Ushaw College. What an amazing venue. I’ll let you into a secret; we nearly forgot the haggis for the Piper to cut up. But, being JB, we improvised. The Green debate brought politics to our halls, along with many from the local community. As did the lecture from our IAS Fellow, Kalyan, which developed into a lively scene in the bar. Pac-man people – you know who you are! It has been a year of significant change. There have been new faces in student support – Sandra, Sarah, Deborah and Julie have done a fantastic job in offering guidance, positive choices, unstinting goodwill as well as finding the right forms to fill, the right person to speak to and the best emails to use. No easy task at times. We are lucky to have Judith and Pam to keep us right, alongside the JCR/ MCR exec. You have been a pleasure to know. Collaborating for the best outcome has been the watch word this year and I think we have done pretty well with your help – for the new kids! Our mentor team has been exceptional. There have been new faces there too, welcomed and adopted by our more experienced colleagues. We have forged our way through new regulations and operational demands with humour and wisdom. They will miss you. And so … it is time for congratulations and farewells. I look forward to hearing all your news and triumphs, to receiving postcards and welcoming you back for the 10th anniversary celebrations. We wouldn’t have got here without you. There is a big wide world out there (look out for that mole). Go get it!
JCR President Siri Minsaas As I write this entry, end of term festivities are taking off: there seems to be an event on every day, Summer Ball preparations are reaching a peak, and decorations from Butler Day are slowly making their way out of the JCR Office. I can’t believe that the year is already over. Leading the JCR this year has certainly not been easy at times, but there have absolutely been enough good moments to make it worth it. There have also been some truly bizarre moments: convincing a woman who had found Butler Bar on a list of local pubs that we would not be able to provide a male member of our bar staff to make cocktails at a hen party she was organising sticks out as an interesting experience, as does the time I received an email from a student at St. Aidan’s telling me that the happiness of the rest of his life depended on me allowing him to join our gym as he wished to continue to pursue the love of his life, a student from Ustinov. Being JCR President is simultaneously the best and worst job. I’ve been thrown up on more times than I would have liked. The regular working hours have been a particular highlight as well… In no other job, however, would I have been able to work alongside the incredible people I’ve been privileged enough to have as my colleagues and friends this year. I also can’t imagine being part of any other community where people work so hard for the benefit of others to put on events and activities, and run our sports, societies and committees, giving students the opportunity to do what they love. It has been so encouraging this year to see new events and ideas develop, and the enthusiasm and dedication of our students taking our wonderful community forward. Long may it last! A huge number of thanks are in order to so many people for this year. Firstly, I need to thank the College staff. We have a dedicated team here at Butler who work as for long as it takes to ensure that our students are provided for and supported. Adrian, Des, Karen, Pam, Sandra, the porters and all of the cleaners, Viv, Mandy, Pete, Deborah and Julie, Judith, Fiona, Sarah – can I say a massive thank you to all of you on behalf of the student body for everything you do on a daily basis. And to Pam – thank you for looking after me for four years. Thanks are also due to the Exec of 2014/15 for making this past year so exceptional, and to the Exec of 2015/16 for the impressive amount they have achieved in the few months I’ve been privileged enough to work with them. The International Festival was my absolute favourite event this year, and with the York Varsities, the Societies Garden Party, Grace House Auction, Welfare campaign weeks and live music nights, it’s no wonder that all of the other JCR Presidents are jealous when they see our wall-planner. You guys are the cogs that keep this place going. On a more personal note I also need to thank my friends who have supported me throughout my time here, keeping me going through all of the difficult times as well as making the good times extra special. I love you all very much, and you should hopefully know who you are! Though he falls into the above category, extra special thanks are due to Matt Armitage for his endless enthusiasm and tireless dedication to improving student experience, and for co-organising Butler Day. I can honestly say that this year would never have been possible without Matt Armitage, nor would this yearbook. I’d like to wish the very best of luck to Alice and Hattie, who are going to be absolutely phenomenal, and to the new Exec. Everyone who will still be here to enjoy the results of your hard work is incredibly lucky! And lastly, whether you’ve still got three years or just a week left here, make the most of your time at Butler – there’s no place quite like it. Siri xxx
SCDO & ARA Matt Armitage Being your Student Community Development Officer this year has been such a privilege I can hardly put it into words, so here goes my attempt at it. 2014/15 has been a rollercoaster year of events, drama’s, ups, downs, roundabouts, basically just a whirlwind of activity and fun! Being at the centre of the JCR this year has been a fantastic experience as I have been able to watch so many of you develop the seeds of an idea to become a full blown event that engages so much of our community. Some of my favourites this year have been the International Festival (great job Sabrina!), the Winter Ball and the Societies Garden Party! There have been so many events it was hard to choose just three though, so I just want to say a huge congratulations to anyone who has been involved in College life this year! You have made Butler such a vibrant and wonderful place to live and it will be heart-breaking to say goodbye! Luckily I have also had the opportunity to engage with the alumni community, being the Alumni Relations Assistant for College too, This allowed me to plan alumni events throughout the year and keep in contact with graduated students. The alumni community is just as involved as the College community and I implore everyone graduating to stay in contact with Butler is one way or another, being part of Butler really is for life, and you never know what new friends you might make by attending a reunion event! Butler has something for everyone, whether you like music, arts, sport, drama, unicycling, dance, darts, studying, films, games...the list could go on and on. I hope you have made the most of your time at Durham by not just studying but doing something extra too! Life at Butler is truly special, and something I will never forget. Thank you to every single one of you who has influenced my time here, it has been an amazing journey and I hope to carry the experiences of my time here through to later life. Matt xx

To thrive as a Services Officer I'd say you need 3 things. A WISHBONE: We saw the potential for ice-creams, BBQs, and expanded gluten-free options, and chased the dream. A BACKBONE: Writing good rotas each week required motivation and drive (and chocolate). A FUNNYBONE: Credit goes to Hattie Pridmore, who never failed to make me laugh.
It has been an exciting year working alongside Beth as Services Officer. The team of students working in the Kitchen and Coffee Shop have been incredible, supporting our efforts to improve and maintain the services, and expand the choice available to students. We have also had tremendous amount of support from Mandy allowing us to expand the range of gluten free options, offer ice creams and smoothies, and hold summer BBQs. The summer BBQs were a huge success and a highlight of the role this year. It has been a privilege to serve the JCR as a member of the Executive Committee this year, and I look forward to the coming year as JCR President.

Hey everyone! it has been a great year for livers out, with more events than ever. From tea and toast in exam season, to the allotment social in Returners Week, a Monopoly-themed Returners Formal to International Cocktails and Food event. If you can't go to college, college should come to you! Thanks for a great year, Emma x
This year welfare comm. have been incredible. We have had help from all members to ensure that welfare campaigns this year have been fantastic. The team have managed to put on five campaigns with me as Welfare Officer and a long Take a Break campaign with Fiona. We had some key events that were a great success and that the welfare team really enjoyed. The welfare parties during Butlerite Welfare Week and SHAG week included some interesting games including guessing the flavour of flavoured condoms. We’ve had everything from healthy snack sessions to discussion whether disability is a societal construct. I have to say a massive thank you to everyone who has been part of the committee this year and for everyone’s contribution to the campaigns. Matthew, Calum and Fiona were the best assistants I could ask for and I am 100% sure that Fiona will be the most caring and engaging Welfare Officer for you all. Providing you all with condoms has been a very fun experience, stay safe Butler.

Elected into the position of Bar Stewards slightly later than the rest of the Exec myself and Harriet took on the role in October after an entire summer of persuasion from our JCR Chair...and I look back with no regrets.
Working on the college bar for the past 3 years has been one of my favourite parts of University, as it was a good way to get involved socially in college and gain valuable skills for the future. I enjoyed being a Bar Steward this year

2014/2015 has been a progressive step forward for Butler societies, and long may it continue.
Social Chair Jenny Hudec Social events have gone very well this year. We have enjoyed some of the most successful formals yet- with a nearly 100% sell out rate. This year has also seen Butler branch out of the Howlands, holding two dinners at the beautiful Ushaw venue. We have had multiple Newcastle nights out, including our first ever joint trip with Van Mildert which was a huge success. Other highlights have been the Halloween bar crawl, the Christmas trip to Edinburg and the re-Butler stroll which all enjoyed record turn outs.

I have had a fantastic time over the past year organising and participating in sporting events at Butler, from organising the first York Varsity event with Langwith College in York, to participating and winning the Floodlit Cup with the Football A team, something that will live long in the memory. There were also great moments that i got to take part in while being on exec, such as freshers week, which was fantastically organised, and the sports formal, which was a great celebration of the sport at Butler. Overall its been a pleasure to have been a part of a great year of sport at this college.
With such an eclectic mix of individuals in the 2014-15 exec, it was never going to be an easy job. But just how much we came together by the end is testament to the commitment of every single person there. It was a pleasure to work with Vicky and Catherine, whose diligence and sacrifice were really something to behold. Thanks to everyone who came down to the meetings, voted, and who showed great appetite to change the way things are run in the college. I’m glad we managed to do some good.

The hockey club have seen Ben Cushion captaining the mens side in tandem with his captaincy of the newly formed Team Durham 5th side, while the girls saw Roisin Monaghan taking up the helm. Imi Jones held the esteemed position of Social Secretary; putting on extremely well attended events from a farm themed welcome drinks to a Geordie Shore vs Made In Chelsea stroll, which went down a treat. The men started off the season well winning their first two matches and drawing the next two. An extremely strong performance from a fresh team. However a league victory wasn’t to be theirs with only one more win added to the tally. However I would like to applaud all the boys for putting in a sterling effort and putting up a good fight when we played. The girls have had a much harder season losing many key players last year and only one new recruit joining their ranks. Despite often being 2 or 3 players down they still managed to pull 3 wins out of the bag. Thanks to Roisin’s determination and dedication to the team. As a club we were also able to help Team Durham set up umpire training for the first time and now have 3 members who are level 1 trained. This puts us in good stead for the future. I would like to say a farewell to all the team mates we are losing. But also a special thanks to Chris Reilly for his dedication to the club over the years, you will be missed. It has been a privilege to serve as the President of the friendliest, most fun loving and supportive club in Butler. Rupert Maspero, Club President
This season has been the most successful football season for the women in Butler history. Last season, we were promoted from Division 1 into the Premiership after coming top of the league. We were so proud of ourselves and, despite losing some great players, we were ready for the challenging season ahead in the premiership league. This season we have fought hard and as a result of our tremendous efforts, we have taken the title as premiership champions. With the addition of some very talented fresher’s, the team has truly blossomed this year and is a force to be reckoned with. Not only did we come top of the premiership, we did not lose a game in the league this season which demonstrates our talented defensive four and strong team unit. Another brilliant achievement of the team this year has been winning the trophy knock-out competition. We advanced through all the knock out rounds and beat Cuth’s 2-0 in the final which was a great achievement as there were some very strong competitors in the league. The college acknowledged our achievements by awarding us with team of the year for the second year running. This was an honour and it feels fantastic to have played a part in the great achievements of the team as a whole this season winning three outstanding awards. All of this has been achieved whilst maintaining a friendly and relaxed environment for the girls at training and matches and ensuring that all players get a game regardless of their previous football experience. Finally, the team have gelled unbelievably well once again which is illustrated through our fun socials and inclusive atmosphere created at training and matches.

The treble looked to be on at one point during the season, before the A’s were disappointingly knocked out of the Trophy by Grey C after 5 games in 8 days. However, the real story of the season was the Floodlit Cup. Seeing off Staff A in the preliminary round before dispatching Mary’s A, Hatfield A and Stephenson A to face off against Aidan’s A in the final, the first time for both sides in the final of the biggest competition in college sport. With over 150 supporters, including College Principal Adrian Simpson, the A’s took the lead from a fantastic solo goal from Ben Cohen. Butler heroically battled on for almost the whole of the second half with 10 men after Cohen was sent off. A pitch invasion ensued as the final whistle was blown and the celebrations continued long in to the night as Butler won the prestigious cup.
After losing some key players last year, a good intake of fresher’s saw Cameron Wild, Joe Sansome and Joey Darlington form a new back four alongside Jack Skilton. With Joe ‘The Cat’ Colebrook in goal to form one of the most impenetrable defences in college football this year, conceding only 11 league goals. In the hunt for promotion, the A’s did extremely well but fell just short after losing two games, showing just how tight the league was. Danny Agar spearheaded the attack, with 28 goals to put him way out in front as Butler’s top goal scorer ever. Some performances worth mentioning would be the Rob George show against Stephenson B, clinching a hat trick in a difficult fixture. Sam Taylor turned out fantastic performances consistently over the season. Rob Young and Ben Tucker made the step up to the A’s after guiding the B’s to promotion last year and both produced a number of tireless performances.
What a year for troupe! With the entry of five newbies after auditions, the group was freshly revamped and ready for a new start, led by the fabulous Ellie Hackney. The year started early for troupe with, for the first time in the history of Butler, our participation to the Varsity York Trip in November where we performed on Muse's version of 'Feeling Good'. This weekend also gave us the opportunity to have a two-day social, getting to know each other better and creating a good atmosphere within the group around the excitement of our first demonstration together. The girls bonded and the performance was a success; we were ready to take it to the next level: the fashion show, or as famously known JBCFS15, THE event of the year. The pressure was on and we embraced it. After a general consensus (#democracy), the first performance would be on 'Uptown Funk' introducing a bit of a hip-hop vibe to our group. This required some hard work for most of us but, thankfully, the stress of embarrassing ourselves was greatly handled by Ellie and her natural skills that made us look like ten mini (and girly) Bruno Mars on stage. With a Moulin Rouge themed underwear walk, the temptation of choreographing a burlesque routine to introduce the walk was too hard to hold back for me, and when Ellie asked me to take over for the second performance, I knew this was my chance. And here we were, practicing our sexiest moves on 'Show Me How You Burlesque' before the big night. The show was a success and so were our performances, offering to the greedy crowd a mix of edgy and sassy dances that pleased them deeply. So shout out to our captain this year, Ellie Hackney, who, despite being a real mess, made this year a real success for troupe! I am proud of our work, thank you, we'll miss you. Zoe Destang
Butler Netball has had an incredible year. In matches all teams have done outstandingly and exceeded expectations, practices have shown the enthusiasm and commitment of the club, and socials have demonstrated we succeed off the pitch as well as on it! Whilst Butler netball has always been strong, this year saw amazing results. The A team dominated the Premiership league, winning all but one game and only failing to take first place overall due to goal difference. This was a frustrating result given that we had actually beaten the team that ended up winning, but such consistent success shows just how strong the team was. The B team had a similarly successful year, coming 4th in their league overall, and reaching the 3rd round of the cup, a significant improvement on last year.
Due to such high membership this year Butler was able to enter a team into the newly created Social league, allowing any member of the club to be part of some friendly competition. Even without a full team Butler dominated the varsity games against Langwith College both at York and in Durham. With the standard of the club improving it was only fitting that the equipment we had improved too, and the club welcomed new posts and balls. Off the court our team spirit continued, with many socials throughout the year giving us a chance to get to know a different side to everyone. Whether we’re playing in the dark, during torrential downpours or 9am the morning after the Butler fashion show, the girls have always given 100% and managed to deliver incredible results and our success and dedication was recognised as we were awarded Club of the Year.
Pitch, Please’ have had a great first year as Butler’s newest society. What started as an idea by Alex Naylor has turned in to a fully-fledged male acapella group with practises every Tuesday. Highlights include our first performance at Butler’s Got Talent singing ‘Pompeii’, composing and learning the tricky ‘Take Me to Church’ to perform at Butler’s Fashion Show, and winning ‘Best New Society’ at the Societies formal. With a strong body of 20+ students, ‘Pitch, Please’ are looking to go from strength to strength in the coming year with preparations to sing both ‘Beggin’ and Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’. The societies have also planned a group Coast2Coast from Workington to Tynemouth to raise money for Grace House. Lesbihonest, it might not be the most conventional society you’ve ever seen, but it’s by far one of the best to be a part of. Acca-believe it.
This year, cocktail society has seen many collaborations with other societies and committees, including International Comm, Book Club and the uni-wide LGBT Society. Our first event was a ‘welcome back’ party for returners and livers out, with a Mean Girls’ theme of “on Wednesday’s, we wear pink”. We have had a couple of socials, most often in our fave Whiskey River, and have had a considerable increase in numbers attending the sessions. The joint event with International Comm was during One World Week and, again, attracted lots of new people. The joint event with LGBT Society was a continuation of something started last year and was a huge success. Hopefully, it can continue in further years! We’ve mixed many new and interesting cocktails and have even come up with some experimental concoctions ourselves, one of which included jam… Tastes nicer than you’d think! All in all, it’s been a really fun and successful year, and we’ve greatly enjoyed being presidents. To finish as we started, can we mix it? Yes we can!

Most Embarrassing Moment: Every time I didn't turn up for a lecture. I wasn't so worried about my degree as the mocking I'd receive for somehow misreading my weekly timetable for the seventeenth time.
