ROCK OF AGES $20,000 PAY DAY FOR NEW BAND by Mitchell Jordan

ALL FIVE members of the South Strathfield-based band, Into the Fireplace are one step closer to living the rock and roll dream after winning the $20,000 grand final of The Star’s Clash of the Bands competition. The rock band, comprising James Hancock, Patrick Laba Sarkis, Chiara Kim, Tom Townsend and Jack Townsend has come a long way since forming in mid-2011. When they took to the stage at Rock Lily in Pyrmont, Into the Fireplace competed against 17 bands who were assessed on their original song-writing and performance prowess by three judges: guitarist Peter Northcote, Select Music agent Katie Rynne and booking agent David Knight. The band’s 19-year-old guitarist, James Hancock said the win was good recognition for years of hard work. “You have to go in there with the confidence that you’re going to win,” he said. NSTEAD OF “I’M DREAMING of a white Christmas”, I’m into singing… “We’re all going on a summer holiday” – even if that holiday is at home. Having Christmas in the summer-time is way more preferable to a bleak, freezing northern hemisphere festive season. Been there and done that and it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Scurrying about on massively over-crowded public transport in zero temperatures or worse,

HOLIDAY TIME IS HERE AGAIN

BURWOOD remembering to check that two gloves are on your person at any given time (not one in your pocket and the other somewhere else) and then there’s the lack of daylight hours. I do have fond memories of Christmas markets in

Germany and Austria but on the whole we’ve got it good right here. You can have the massive roast with all the trimmings, seafood feast, or anything in between. Australian seasonal produce would have to

rank close to the top of the world’s finest, and it’s easy to access on our doorstep at local greengrocers, Sydney Markets, butchers (the real kind), delicatessens and speciality bakeries popping up all over the inner west and plenty of outstanding seafood retailers. We are spoiled for choice and isn’t that fabulous? And after the big day, go to the beach. How good is that? On the whole, we probably take what we have for granted because that’s what we have been brought up with and are accustomed to. However, there are many

Aussies who do it tough at this time of year for all sorts of reasons. Appeal emails from charitable organisations appear to be rising if my inbox is anything to go by. So spare a few dollars for those who need it or place a gift under any of the Wishing Trees in the inner west. As this is the final Burwood Scene for 2013, I’d like to wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. As always, I’d like to thank the many community members who contribute to Burwood Scene from

across the Ashfield, Strathfield, Canada Bay and Burwood areas with their information, opinions and phone calls. Your input is valued and appreciated. Thank you to our advertisers for their continued support and lastly my heart-felt thanks to our team, who keep the news coming. Burwood Scene will be back on January 22, 2014. Until then, please check in to www.burwoodscene. com.au for any up-to-date news. Merry Christmas one and all.

Plaza business drops after car park closure LOYAL SHOPPERS are furious and business owners are facing a tough Christmas trading period following the sudden closure of the car park behind Burwood Plaza on Belmore Street on Wednesday, November 27 that also eliminated pedestrian access to Belmore Street and Wynne Avenue. The land, which was used as a council car park, was sold in 2011 by Burwood Council to developers B1 Group for redevelopment for as a new high rise, mixed-use development including residences, retail shopping, public works and a new public car park. Business owners in Burwood Plaza suffered an immediate down-turn in business and are concerned about the long-term effect. “We are down 15% now,” says Freshworld Fruit Markets manager, Dwayne Warwick. “It’s going to get worse. At least the owners could have left the walkway open. There was no signage and we were seeing people getting trapped where the pedestrian access is now closed.” The usually busy Sandwich Scene outlet was all-but empty with the owner saying, “It’s a worry” and that she was also down 15 per cent. One local shopper, who did not want to be named, said the anger was evident. “Every person I spoke to has the same grievance. Why couldn’t they have waited until after Christmas? Builders never start projects at this time of year,” she said. AMCAL Chemist co-owner George Bournazos described the decision as disrespectful. “I have been here for 25 years and this is the biggest debacle I’ve ever seen. It’s disappointing

by Belinda Noonan

and frustrating for customers. I can’t believe these people couldn’t be bothered to wait three weeks out of respect to the local community and Christmas,” George commented. Plaza Seafood owner Sandy Tarlamis is concerned about his customers. “We have been affected straight away but the worst thing is hearing the disappointment from the customers. Burwood Plaza management is doing everything they can but their hands are tied. Burwood Council should not have let this happen,” Mr Tarlamis said. Burwood Plaza owners, Centuria Property Funds said that it is developing a coordinated traffic management plan. . “C entur ia is working closely with B1 Group, Icon – the builder appointed by B1 Group to construct the site, and the Burwood Council, to develop the traffic management plans that are aimed at easing congestion when construction activity commences. The plans will include traffic personnel to assist in the management of pedestrian and vehicular traffic entering and exiting Burwood plaza with additional personnel brought in during peak periods,” a Centuria spokesperson said. “We are also in close discussions with B1 Group to maximise the synergies between the two centres,” said Michael Tulk, Shopping Centre Manager at Centuria Property Services. “ Wit h t h e i n c re a s e d residential accommodation above Burwood Plaza and the expectation that there will be quality Asian operators looking to invest in the retail shops

within the B1 development, we see Burwood Plaza as positioned to benefit from the development activity and the enhanced shopping experience it will bring.” Burwood Mayor John Faker is unhappy about the closure saying, “I am disappointed that the car park was not kept open during the busy Christmas period. I asked them [the land owners] to reconsider the closure just prior to Christmas” he said. “This [the development] was approved by the Joint Regional Planning Panel. I voted against this decision,” Cr Faker said. “However, this will only be a temporary inconvenience, as the developers have agreed to provide public parking on the premises once works are complete.”

CHRISTMAS IN BURWOOD

A

s we approach the end of 2013, Council remains committed to delivering a high standard of service over the festive season.

By now I’m sure you will have noticed the beautiful Christmas decorations in our town centres at Burwood, Croydon, Enfield, Croydon Park and Strathfield, including two large Christmas trees at Burwood Park and The Strand. Council is rolling out a range of fun activities for families and children this festive season. On Saturday, Council will be hosting Carols in the Park which will feature carols, food stalls, entertainment and

fireworks. This year, the event includes our popular Christmas in the Park. Organised by the local church groups and schools, the event will feature a live nativity scene, carols and festive performances. I encourage you to come down to Burwood Park and take part in our free community event, as we welcome in the New Year. I wish you a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

100 homes Deck the Halls and have a sing-along to go for Westconnex NSW ROADS Minister Duncan Gay has called for expressions of interest from industry to widen the M4 from six to eight lanes, and released the concept design for the M4 East tunnel, which will see 100 homes demolished at the entry and exit points at Underwood Road, Homebush and Wattle Street, Haberfield. “ There is now strong momentum behind WestConnex and we’ve reached an important milestone before construction starts on the first stage,” Mr Gay said. “The widening of the M4 and its extension via a tunnel along the Parramatta Road corridor will transform this part of Sydney.” Stage one of the WestConnex project will see the widening of the M4 from three to four lanes in each direction from Church Street, Parramatta to Homebush Bay Drive, Homebush. The M4 East tunnel will start around 800m west of Concord Road with the current M4 connections to Concord Road and Parramatta Road being retained. Key work includes: •    A road tunnel from the M4 near Concord Road, North Strathfield to Parramatta Road and City West Link, Haberfield around 5km long •    At Concord Road – a new entry ramp to the WestConnex tunnel eastbound •    At Concord Road – a new exit ramp from the WestConnex tunnel westbound •    At Concord Road – an exit to the M4 to access Parramatta Road at North Strathfield from the WestConnex tunnel westbound •    An entry to the WestConnex tunnel westbound, from Parramatta Road east of Wattle Street, Haberfield and from the City West Link at Haberfield •    An exit from the WestConnex tu n nel e ast b ou nd, to Parramatta Road east of Wattle Street, Haberfield and to the City West Link at Haberfield. “Building the motorway will require some property acquisitions, but we will try to keep them to a minimum,” Mr Gay said. “The exact number is not known at this stage as the final route alignment has not been determined, but it

is expected to be about 100 properties.” The exact location of the ventilation tunnels is not yet known. At a media information session attended by Burwood Scene in October, Westconnex Director for Strategy and Engagement, Maryanne Graham said that discussion needed to happen with the community. “We don’t know (how many filtration stacks). That is yet to be determined and discussion with the community still needs to happen,” Ms Graham advised in October. “Independent air quality experts and a chief scientist for Australia and New Zealand will be drawing on global benchmarks for ventilation solutions.” “Other organisations such as the Asthma Foundation are being consulted,” she added. Member for Strathfield Charles Casuscelli is encouraging local residents to have a good look at the concept design for the M4East at www. westconnex.com.au The Minister’s announcement means that all the planning applications for stage one of WestConnex have now been lodged, paving the way for work to begin following an earlier submission of the planning application for the M4 widening last month. “With the Roads Minister calling for expressions of interest from industry to widen the M4, Australia’s largest transport project moves a step closer to construction,” said Mr Casuscelli. “It will then extend the motorway via a 6km tunnel of three lanes in each direction from west of Concord Road, North Strathfield to Parramatta Road and City West Link at Haberfield and will be known as the M4 East,” he added. Three information sessions for inner west residents are being held in December and early next year before comments from the public close on February 17, 2014. An information session will be held on Saturday, 14 December at Concord Library, Flavelle Street, Concord from 10am until 2 pm. Further information sessions are scheduled for early February.

The evening will be capped off with a visit from the man himself, Santa and a dazzling fireworks display guaranteed to get you in the festive mood. Christmas in the Park is organised by the local churches in conjunction with Council and includes a live nativity scene re-enactment and performances by local church groups, choirs and schools.

Santa is coming to Burwood Park on December 14.

FUNDING OUR FUTURE

Since 2010, Council has been listening to the community in order to identify and deliver services that are important to you. One of the top priorities residents have raised is to maintain and upgrade local infrastructure including our roads, footpaths, kerbs and parks. Currently, council rates are determined by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART), which sets a ‘rate peg’ limiting the amount rates can increase each year. However, the rate peg does not take into consideration rising costs and residents’ demand for increased services. In order to continue delivering these services at our current sustainable option is to apply for a Special Rates Variation (SRV). Council has put forward three different rate options and we want to know which you prefer. This is an important decision for us to make as a community. Local band rocks the house Continued from page 1

“It shows how far we’ve progressed. Our first show was a bit rusty: most of us hadn’t been in bands before, but now we’ve played a lot of shows and have a good local following.” Into the Fireplace’s lead vocalist, 22-year-old Chiara Kim of Belfield found herself in a state of disbelief upon hearing the verdict.

“To be honest, I was gobsmacked,” she recalled. “I went in there thinking we had a chance, but was really struck by the whole situation.” For their efforts, Into the Fireplace received a prize of $20,000 which will be used to put their recently recorded EP out there to the public. James placed an importance on

remaining level-headed about the whole situation. “It’s important to think that you’re not going to get big and keep the love and passion for music – otherwise you’ll end up bitter and disappointed,” he said. Chiara, who has no training as a musician apart from studying music for her HSC at Bethlehem College, recently decided to quit

her job to focus solely on music for the next two months. “Performing is such an adrenaline rush,” she said. “It gives you an overwhelming satisfaction to know you’re providing people with an experience and to see the audience appreciate it.” Female-fronted rock bands are few and far between, but Chiara sees this point of

difference as something that can only help Into the Fireplace to stand out. “I’ve never felt like I’ve had to prove myself,” she said. “My band mates think I’m awesome and I feel the same way about them.”

More marinas for Sydney Harbour NEW MARINA destinations have been unveiled for boaters on Sydney Harbour. Minister for Roads and Ports, Duncan Gay has announced that 18 commercial marinas are opening their doors to the boating public under the new Sydney Harbour Destinations Plan. “Mar i n a s i n p opu l ar destinations like Cabarita and Gladesville will be accessible for people who are having a day out on the water,” he said. Member for Drummoyne, John Sidoti, said that under the Sydney Harbour Destinations Plan, the government will continue to work with other marinas to expand the number

of destinations and identify new areas where the boating experience can be improved. “When you’re out on the water, look for the bright green ‘Boating Destination Marina’ banner which will be displayed in prominent locations at all of the participating marinas,” he said. “Blue banners marked Destination Berth will be used to show boaters exactly where to tie their boat up. This is

about making a great boating experience on the Harbour, even better,” added Mr Sidoti. People are also encouraged to ring ahead, particularly at smaller marinas which may only be able to accommodate a limited number of vessels at a time. La Bocca deli cafÊ in Croydon Park fits the bill perfectly, establishing itself as the place to go for coffee, lunch or a snack with home-made Italian cakes, pastries and pastas, a fully stocked delicatessen, imported Italian goods and quality coffee. Run by Sicilian born Giovanni Cantarella, his wife Tiziana Tarda and their 19-year-old daughter Manuela since taking over from the previous owners in May, La Bocca exudes a generous and genuine welcome. The close knit family happily work together, clearly loving what they do.

Manuela, who attended Concord High School and was the Vice Captain 2012, always had a career path in mind. “I love cooking and being with people. I did hospitality at school and also studied it afterwards. It’s been really good to get to know the locals and see them come back, Manuela said. “When we first took over here I would see newborns with their mums and now they are coming up to a year old. Among the great array of Italian food on offer from fresh pastas daily (at only $7.50), imported Panettone and bread from Haberfield are mouth-watering home-made Sicilian almond biscuits, cakes caprese and canoli. A little slice of heaven. La Bocca also specialise in antipasto platters, Panini platters and desserts, providing catering for all occasions. They are open seven days a week for breakfast, brunch and lunch from 6.30am Monday to Saturday and 8am on Sundays.

Shop safe for kids’ toys PARENTS are being urged to shop wisely this Christmas when buying children’s toys. According to a release, toys with small breakable parts can be ingested by young children causing them to choke or stop breathing, while non-compliant projectile toys can cause serious injuries to eyes. Last month, Minister for Fair Trading, Anthony Roberts, announced 63 dangerous toys and general products, as well as 48 electrical items, had been detected by Fair Trading in the lead up to Christmas. The announcement was made

at a waste disposal facility in Sydney’s Terrey Hills where the Minister was presiding over the destruction of thousands of non-compliant toys confiscated by Fair Trading in previous compliance operations. “This year alone more than $100,000 in fines and costs have been handed out by the courts to 17 discount toy sellers operating in metropolitan and regional NSW,” Mr Roberts said. “Particularly galling is the fact that 15 of those traders had been fined before by Fair Trading and six had previously been prosecuted in court.”

Pollies fire heated words by Mitchell Jordan

A MEDIA RELEASE from Member for Strathfield, Charles Casuscelli criticising a rally to stop closing fire stations has sparked a war of words with Greens MP and Member for Balmain Jamie Parker. Casuscelli’s release described a “Greens-inspired rally in support of retaining overtime for fire fighters”, which he viewed as a political stunt. “The Member for Balmain has been trying for some time to stir up this hysteria over fire stations,” Casuscelli wrote. “It is nothing more than an exercise in political point scoring by the Greens.” When shown the release, Mr Parker asked Burwood Scene whether it was real or a joke. “You’ve got the best job in the world being able to write about things like this,” Mr Parker told this reporter. “It [the release] is like

something out of [the satirical newspaper] The Onion.” Mr Parker wasted no time in firing back his own point of view on the matter. “Residents and local business owners in my community are worried about the impact of these closures and I have been working hard to respond to these genuine concerns,” he said. “It is disgraceful that Charles disrespects his community to the point where he isn’t even listening.” Jim Casey, state secretary from the Fire Brigade Employees’ Union, backed Mr Parker. “The reason that the stations are being shut is because the O’Farrell Government has instituted a four-year rolling agenda of budget cuts to FRNSW,” he said. “In the first financial year (2011/12) it was $7 million. This year it’s $14 million. The following year it will be $18 and in the fourth year $25 million recurrent.”

People power puts Parramatta Road in perspective BURWOOD COUNCIL is following in the City of Canada Bay’s footsteps by using a citizen panel of around 70 people to make decisions on Parramatta Road and Westconnex. According to Burwood Mayor, John Faker, a statistically reliable cross-section of each member Council’s Local Government Area in proportionate numbers to the relative populations of each would form a citizen panel. “I have met on a number of occasions with inner-city mayors to discuss a regional approach in dealing with the development of the Parramatta Road Corridor associated with the Westconnex Project,” he said. “Council will be working with newDemocracy to create a citizen panel to represent our local area and develop a plan for the Parramatta Road Corridor.” In May this year, a group of 32 Canada Bay residents spent 45 hours working with council to make decisions. 41-year-old Rhodes resident, Jodie Hawthorne, who has lived in Canada Bay for the past two years said that she was “surprised to be randomly chosen” to participate on the panel. Though Ms Hawthorne found it “interesting” to work with council staff, she did not find the panel to be successful. “I certainly did not feel we were given ample opportunity to discuss the opinion on services of Canada Bay City

Council with everyday citizens; I only recall one meeting where groups from the community were asked to speak with us, their talk time was limited and the talk was invigilated,” she said. “After this meeting I felt terrible that one group of emotional parents and operators of a local child care centre were guided out the door when their time was up.” Canada Bay’s mayor, Angelo Tsirekas, was not available for comment when contacted by Burwood Scene. Ms Hawthorne does not believe there will be “any positive change” in Canada Bay as a result of the citizen panel. “Perhaps if we had been given more time and unrestricted access to citizens, their opinions and feedback the outcome would have been more positive and an accurate reflection of the peoples’ concerns,” she said.

Citizen Jury member Jodie Hawthorne (right) with Cr Michael Megna.

“The final recommendations of the citizen panel is not reflective of what I stand for.” Canada Bay councillor, Michael Megna told Burwood Scene the panel gave members of the community a chance to share their opinions.

“It gave public credibility to our position,” he said, adding: “Councils are elected to make decisions and we can ask community reps, but the hard decisions should still be made by councillors.”

A Tamil forum is held monthly at Homebush Boys High.

ECONOMIC and political issues were on the table for discussion at the monthly forum of the Consortium of Tamil Associations earlier this month when Craig Laundy, Federal Member for Reid and NSW Member for Strathfield, Charles Casuscelli were guest speakers. Held at Homebush Boys High, the forum members posed many questions to Laundy and Casuscelli in an animated Q&A covering socio-economic topics affecting local Tamils. Laundy said he would make a parliamentary statement relating to Tamils’ problems and would mobilise the support of

the like-minded MPs within the coalition government. One audience member raised a question relating to creating a River for Jaffna (a cultural stronghold of Tamils in Sri Lanka). Mr Laundy replied telling those gathered that he would take up the matter with Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop as part of Aus_Aid program. “Mr Laundy stated that he has visited many schools in his electorate and would like to promote multiculturalism in his electorate, said Consortium president Mr Kidnapillai Selvarajah (Selva) “Charles is a passionate

person for fair go for all and a strong believer of community interest above all and that he was so happy to meet the various Tamil Community leaders together at the monthly forum, added President Selva. Casuscelli is currently co-chairing the Ministerial Consultative Committees for Chinese, Korean and Russian communities and agreed to explore forming a similar committee for Tamil Community and the possibility of establishing a cultural link between the NSW State government and newly elected Northern Provincial Government of Sri Lanka.

THE GREAT Australian tradition of gathering round a barbecue at home may be on its way out, according to new research. Statistics from Tourism NSW show that the camping industry is growing fast, with more than 87 per cent of Australian’s having taken a camping holiday. For many travellers, a barbecue is up there with packing insect repellent and sunscreen as one of the essentials on a camping trip. Peter Woodland, managing director of Australian company, BeefEater Barbecues, said that the changing face of Australian society is transforming barbecue habits. “Our research shows that

by Mitchell Jordan

an increase in city apartment dwellers, down-sizers, road-tripping baby boomers and a growing trend for camping holidays, has meant that the great Aussie backyard quite simply does not exist for many Australians, said Woodland. With summer on its way, outdoor cooking enthusiasts are also being urged to check their gas and undertake barbecue maintenance. Recommended tips for barbecue safety include transporting gas bottles securely in the upright position and checking for leaks before lighting.

All gas appliances including barbecues and portable camping equipment must be certified to be legally sold in New South Wales. All electric barbecues must also be approved and marked. Owners of gas barbecues and portable appliances, including small cookers and camping lanterns, should check to make sure they are in good order and have the relevant approval marks before connecting to gas. Barbecue owners can find more information about gas and electrical product safety and check examples of gas and electrical approval marks at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or by calling 13 32 20.

IN A BID to reduce childcare operating costs, Assistant Minister for Education Sussan Ley has said that that NSW had agreed to streamline Labor’s National Quality Framework (NQF) legislation. Calling the legislation ‘onerous’ at the recent Standing Council on School Education and Early Childhood (SCSEEC), Ms Ley noted that all State and Territory Governments shared the Federal Coalition’s view that amending national regulations was a clear priority to help relieve pressure on both parents and the sector. “The Coalition has a clear position to support high quality child care and early learning, but this needs to be delivered

in a way which doesn’t make it unaffordable and inaccessible for families, Minister Ley said. “The childcare sector has told us loud and clear Labor’s increased red tape and regulations are some of the main reasons forcing them to raise fees – well we’re listening. Hourly fees for long day care increased an average of 44 per cent during Labor’s six years in government local Member, Craig Laundy said as he welcomed the streamline approach. “The changes we’re planning will be a significant first step in improving the rollout of the new National Quality Framework rules and requirements across Reid, Laundy said.

The Federal Government also plans to hold an over-arching Productivity Commission Inquiry into more affordable and flexible childcare options for young families.

Among the proposed changes agreed are ‘streamlining’ to the ratings assessment process to improve waiting times, reducing the amount of regulations for operators, returning the option for child care operators to appoint experienced staff to supervisor roles without having to apply for government certification or pay a fee, changing requirements on safety glass heights and greater flexibility for the administration of basic first-aid on school sites.

A CHILDREN’S playground is being constructed at St Paul’s Anglican Church on Burwood Road thanks, in part, to a grant under the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program. St Pauls Church Rector, Father James Collins applied to Strathfield MP, Charles Casuscelli to build a children’s playground on the Church’s property, which includes swings, ladders, slides and platforms, plus a carpeted, flexible rubber ground floor. “The grant provided some of the funding while the church

FROM the moment you walk in the door at the new 8 Dragons Restaurant at Dooleys Catholic Club in Lidcombe, you know it’s going to be that little bit different. Two young, very expert chefs are making perfectly formed dumplings and wontons behind a feature window in this all brand-new eatery with interesting décor that includes a combination of table sizes and formed wooden stools (which were comfortable to my amazement) and chairs for those who prefer traditional seating. The food is a fresh and authentic taste of China, including Shanghai-style dishes alongside traditional favourites. The menu is not your stock-in-trade Chinese fare as Aussies know it, but a mix that includes their signature dishes Shanghai Xiao Long Bao (steamed pork mini buns), Shanghai style drunken chicken and pan fried pork buns.

2 NEWS 2 NEWS 2 NEWS Mortlake garden grows with funding Top: Chinese Masterchefs at work. Above: Steamed pork mini buns are delicious and filling.

On our visit, we clearly over ordered but went for a mix of what we knew and didn’t, starting out with delicious shrimp and pork wontons with sesame butter, red chilli and spices and shredded jellyfish, which took some persuading before my husband gave it a go – “Yeah it’s nice but a weird texture”. We also went for the traditional sweet and sour pork (why not?), which was all quality ingredients, no gristle and very tasty plus the pork buns (pictured) that were divine.

8 Dragons restaurant is well worth a visit and has already established a dedicated customer base. “Customers are enjoying the buzz of our modern street-style restaurant and the flavours of our authentic Chinese dishes seem to have everyone talking!” Louise O’Connor, Dooleys’ Communications Manager said. The 8 Dragons main entrance is from Church Street and is open 11.00am to 10.00pm seven days a week.

MORTLAKE Public School will blossom after securing $2,500 under the NSW Environmental Trust’s Eco Schools program. According to Member for Drummoyne John Sidoti, the grant would enhance students’ understanding of how to tackle environmental issues locally. “Students at Mortlake Public School intend to create a natural pathway and native Australian memorial garden,” Mr Sidoti said. “Plantings will include Aboriginal bush tucker and when completed, the garden will provide a place to relax and reflect on past students of the school.” Environment Minister Robyn Parker said more than $1.1 million was awarded to schools and researchers in this Environmental Trust funding round.

“I was delighted to endorse $70,000 in grants for 20 schools so students can create food gardens or enhance their existing gardens,” Ms Parker said. “In addition, 60

grants have been awarded to primary and high schools under the Eco Schools Program where $150,000 will deliver environmental projects students will remember for a lifetime.”

O’Brien and Merriman bound for Sochi IT HAS TAKEN 15 YEARS, but Strathfield’s Danielle O’Brien and her Canterbury partner Greg Merriman have finally realised their long-held dream to represent Australia as ice dancers at the Winter Olympics in Sochi next February after they were selected to the Australian Olympic Team in Melbourne last Wednesday. “It’s very exciting,” Danielle said from Melbourne. “After qualifying in September, now it feels real and starts our journey to Sochi from this point.” The history-making ice dance couple, who started their career at Canterbury Ice Rink at 7 and 9 years of age respectively in 1998, were in Melbourne to take their 7th national title (a record) having returned from their Detroit training base last week. “I remember as if it was yesterday attending a signing session for Olympian Joanne Carter in 1998 and I always
