Our 15 year relationship with Heathrow has seen us complete over 300 modernisation and expansion projects across the airport. We have maximised Heathrow Airport Ltd (HAL) assets through the intelligent development of their existing site and portfolio, gradually transforming each terminal into an elegant, highly efficient environment with the facilities to provide for ever-increasing passenger numbers.

Currently able to handle 15 million passengers each year, the expansion and conglomeration of Terminals 3 and 4 at KKIA will see capacity rise to 25 million by 2015, in keeping with the country’s economic growth of more than 5% per annum. We will bring our extensive experience of Saudi aviation to the project, providing the engineering knowledge necessary to realise the architect’s vision across all aspects of the design from building service strategy, the redevelopment and enhancement of airport services, and improving the energy efficiency of the terminals by incorporating the benefits brought by the surrounding environment while minimising any negative impact.

Located on the outskirts of Baku, Heydar Aliyev is Azerbaijan’s only international airport and currently serves 1 million passengers each year. Our client wanted to create a new international gateway to the country, iconic in design and capable of handling up to 3 million travellers.

The new 58,000m² 4-storey terminal building was conceived in the form of the Azerbaijan logo and, working with the architects, we provided the solutions to translate the principles of conceptual intent into a detailed design. One of our key concerns was delivering the security measures necessary to support a 100% capacity increase without compromising the architect’s vision. Using the latest technologies, our team designed inherently secure systems that worked within the overarching architectural concept and, as always, complied with the international ICAO and IATA standards. PROVIDING CERTAINTY, ASSURING VALUE Design solutions that reduce exposure to risk.

Building is always accompanied by risk; without fail, our clients look for early certainty in the understanding of the risks. Our experience means we are able to foresee risks early on and bring them to light while the design is still agile enough to be steered, preventing risk exposure of our clients.

Maintaining airport operations and client revenue is a key consideration in designing towards construction which we have often addressed through off-site manufacture. Early engagement with occupiers is also crucial when planning for the creative re-use of existing buildings.

Our dependability at mitigating risk earns us regular repeat work, including over 400 projects through 20 years’ continual work in and about London’s Heathrow Airport. Keeping our clients informed throughout the design, through regular workshops and visualisations, and capturing our clients’ visions and views, is a key part in circumventing risk.

Driving early rigour through the construction plans, phases and sequences is vital to mitigating risk, and our ability to make our design and construction sequences clear to contractors avoid costly surprises during construction. Similarly, careful and thoughtful negotiation with internal and wider stakeholders, such as airlines and authoritative bodies, is often needed and agreed by interface agreements such as for adjacent surface access rail, transport bodies or adjoining design teams.

Our client wanted us to come up with a design for a new triple bay (300 x 50m) hangar for light maintenance and plane storage that could compete with the price quoted for an off-the-shelf design and build solution, while also delivering an aesthetic building that would fit with the stunning TAG terminal and ATCT we had already created for them. We responded by going back to first principles, deciding that the most efficient structure we could use to span the hangar would be an arch, and considering the whole hangar in this form in order to achieve maximum usable space as well as elegant design. This concept required 40% less steel than a conventional design, minimising both the surface area of cladding needed for the building and its volume, bringing the dual benefits of immediately reducing the cost of materials required, and lowering heating bills and energy use in the long term. This project sought to improve the operational effectiveness of the flight connection centre whilst keeping it functional throughout the construction period. We rose to the challenge to deliver a design that mitigated the risks to existing operations and provided a construction methodology congruent with the live operations. We undertook a careful examination of the building and site we were working on – making detailed surveys of the foundations, analysing the placement of the proposed extension, and checking existing structures – in order to produce engineering solutions that wouldn’t compromise the day-to-day working of the existing FCC. By planning around these constraints and incorporating them into our methodology, we were able to extend the FCC and enhance its operational efficiency with minimum disruption to all users, to both the logistical and financial benefit of our client. PROJEC T JEWEL

Occupying a site of approximately 1.4 million ft2 in size, Project Jewel will enhance Changi Airport’s facilities and strengthen its position as a global air hub. The area is currently occupied by a car park, and we will work alongside the architect to transform it into a contemporary complex housing airport operations, retail units, hotel accommodation, leisure attractions and indoor gardens. Project Jewel will be crowned by an enormous glass and steel bubble rising up and over to enclose the five stories of aboveground amenities. Our team are providing a range of structural and facade engineering services to realise this iconic structure that, when complete, will be one of the largest gridshells in the world. London City Airport’s Master Plan sets out major growth and development plans through to 2030. BuroHappold’s people flow experts modelled the passenger flows within the reconfigured terminal and proposed expansion elements and in particular the new departures and arrivals areas. Detailed assessments of transport related parameters were conducted. Our work enabled the optimisation of the locations, orientations and numbers of CUSS kiosks, as well as the immigration desks, baggage hall and central search facilities. Comprehensive data capture surveys of the existing operations informed the study which involves a detailed dynamic micro-simulation of arrivals and departure scenarios for the 2010 and 2030 operations of the terminal. A combination of static network models and detailed dynamic simulations were carried out to perform sensitivity analysis of the parameters on terminal performance. By 2011, Baku’s only international airport was already getting stretched, so Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) proposed an extensive expansion initiative that would see the airport increased by 150% to accommodate up to 3 million travellers each year.

The new centralised arrivals and departures facility at Birmingham International Airport was created through reconfiguration of the double height link building connecting Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

BuroHappold teamed up with the architect in a joint venture to produce a design and build fast track programme for AZAL that would provide a new terminal and distinguish the airport with an iconic new access route. Using the latest in computer modelling technology, the team came up with a striking design that both negotiated the difficulties of the airport’s location in a seismic region, and also complied fully with international ICAO and IATA standards. This included developing a smoke ventilation and fire engineering strategy that met Euro codes, and integrating an intelligible public address and voice alarm system into the central fire and security system. A key element of the terminal design was the passenger search area (PSA), where passenger comfort can become compromised. BuroHappold carried out passenger flow modelling to test the proposed design in relation to the agreed passenger comfort levels. A combination of static and dynamic simulations models were used to assess passenger movements within the PSA, modelling realistic rates of entry and duration of throughput. 3D network models were also built based on the architectural drawings to represent the circulation and queuing regions through the PSA. During the study, the team assessed the proposed design against target peak hour demand. Demand was increased until throughput time and spatial capacity exceeded acceptable levels, providing valuable data on the peak hour limiting point. Challenged to create a new terminal building that cut energy demands by 50% against the existing one – already classed as one of the most energy efficient in the world – we knew we had to think creatively to find original solutions that could meet this goal. We optimised the building envelope so it would respond dynamically to the highly variable and often punishing external conditions, as well as ensuring the design allowed maximum daylight penetration while retaining passive solar levels inside the terminal, minimising the energy use for internal heating or cooling. Reaching beyond traditional environmental measures, we introduced ground-breaking sustainable strategies – such as snow cooling and harnessing the natural thermal energy of the aquifer – to create a terminal that is unrivalled in its green credentials. Mauka Concourse is an extension of the Interisland Terminal in Honolulu, Hawaii. The project aims to achieve LEED Silver Certification and will add 220,000 ft2 of internal space and 12 additional aircraft gates. The Terminal Modernization Program showcases environmentally sustainable design by having efficient air conditioning, using sunlight to reduce the need for artificial lighting and incorporating photovoltaic panels to generate energy on-site. We introduced the ecoshaft concept to combine natural air biofiltration of the concourse return air through planting contained within a glass shaft to remove VOC + CO2 from the air before returning to the mechanical ventilation system. The ecoshafts will operate in conjunction with a displaced ventilation system and modelled using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software to understand the temperature stratification and air speed in the space. With an annual population increase of 9%, Riyadh is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. To keep up with this expansion, KKIA are integrating terminals 3 and 4 to create a world class, fully IATA compliant mega terminal that will increase capacity over 100% from 12 million to 25 million. Translating the architect’s vision into applied engineering solutions, we are providing energy efficient systems that will realise our client’s aim to achieve a LEED Silver Award. The buildings benefit from large amounts of indirect light, so we plan to employ passive measures such as roof canopies and external shading as simple yet cost effective means of reducing the cooling loads of the terminals. Given the climate, we are also exploring likely sources of renewable energy – such as solar energy and solar thermal hot water – to further reduce the carbon footprint of the new terminal building. The new terminal is, physically and symbolically, an inspiring new gateway to Gibraltar. Welcoming visitors by air, road, or on foot, the conceptual design marries the dual influences of aviation and maritime tradition. The large, sweeping roof spreads its wings across the skyline mirroring the forms of planes as they arrive and depart, whilst the expanse of the floor to ceiling glass facade offers visitors uninterrupted views of the sea.

In order to keep pace with rising aviation traffic and meet future passenger demands at the airport, the extension of Terminal 2 will increase capacity at the gateway by 10 million passengers per year.

The design team created a world class facility that responds to a complex operational brief on a sensitive and constrained site. Two entrances to the building separate passengers who are flying into and out of Gibraltar with those using the facility to cross into Spain. Located on different levels, they allow travellers moving through the building to navigate the relevant processes with ease and efficiency. Although security measures dictate that air and border passengers are divided, extensive transparency between passenger routes ensures all users enjoy a unified, positive experience. We applied our extensive experience of long span design to provide an airport terminal that facilitates a simple, direct and efficient flow of air passengers and baggage. The striking architecture and engineering design is comparable to Terminal 1 and allows for maximum flexibility in terms of space utilisation and future expansion or changes in the functional requirements. Incorporated into the design is an Automated People Mover Interchange Station which connects Terminal 2 with Terminal 1 and the SkyPier, supporting Hong Kong’s growing aviation industry. Working with Foster + Partners and 3DReid, we transformed the departure halls of Terminals 3 and 4 into expansive, open architectural spaces that let in an abundance of natural light. This not only unified the passenger experience throughout the airport, but also offered the potential to increase traffic by up to 35%, maximising the commercial value of the buildings in keeping with Heathrow’s longer term expansion plans. Our success in delivering designs that establish brand identity stretched even further when we created a new home for Virgin Atlantic’s ‘Upper Class’ check-in service in the south wing of Terminal 3. We not only provided up-to-date, highly efficient passenger processing facilities, but housed them within a breathtaking glazed facade extension – complete with VIP passenger drop-off facility – that added a final, distinguishing feature to complete this onbrand, high quality environment.
