Sobia Malik, Jinnah Development Trust, will give a talk on this project and the book she compiled, recording and showcasing the stories of the pioneers who left their homeland of Pakistan to settle in Burnley and successfully contribute to their local community and beyond.
In this taster session, we will explore making a variety of basic books, with techniques including paperfolding and simple book binding. Discover the art of making Artists’ Books and manipulating different types of paper. Develop an awareness of bookmaking from different eras and cultures.
The project exhibition will be on show in the Pop-up Festival Venue throughout the event.

Kate’s debut novel, The Magic of Ramblings, won the Romantic Novelists’ Association Joan Hessayon Award for new writers in 2017.
‘How to Get Published’ - Alysoun Owen, Writers & Artists Yearbook
Burnley Central Library | 11.30 - 12:15 plus Q&A We are delighted to welcome Alysoun Owen to the Festival to give an invaluable talk for writers on how to get published. Alysoun is Editor of the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook and the Children’s Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook, which are bought, borrowed and consulted annually by tens of thousands of writers. In this session Alysoun will offer some hints on what will improve your chances of success. She will talk about perfecting and refining a script, the best way to present your work, self-publishing, and how to be downright persistent.

Two Hundred Houses - Poet Rachel Sills
Burnley Women’s Centre | 12:00 - 14:00 | Women only “Women have sat indoors all these millions of years, so that by this time the very walls are permeated by their creative force” Virginia Woolf Join poet Rachel Sills for a literary look round the house. At this workshop, we’ll discover that inspiration lies right under our noses – and our tablecloths – by focusing on the theme of houses. Using writing exercises and prompts, we’ll write our own poems and see how real inspiration can be found in the domestic. Rachel co-organises a poetry event in Manchester called Peter Barlow’s Cigarette, and has taught writing and literature at universities.

Robertson will discuss his journey from journalism to fiction and the publication of his first two novels, Time to Say Goodbye and If Ever I Fall. Pennine Lancashire has been one of the inspirations for Aziz Dixon on his poetic journey. In this workshop he will share steps from initial inspiration to international publication, illustrating 6 key steps with a range of contemporary poetry, and inviting discussion from writers on their own journey. Aziz has been published in ‘Pennine Ink’ and online with Irwell Inkwell and Algebra of Owls. He has recently published in Grapevine (Lampeter), Moon Magazine, Panoply, Perspectives (Ontario) and The Fat Damsel.

Edward Thomas – Nature Poet or War Poet?

An illustrated lecture celebrating the poetry of Edward Thomas, who was killed in action at the Front in 1917, at the age of 39. Edward Thomas is now recognised as one of the leading English poets of the 20th century – the former Poet Laureate Ted Hughes called him ‘the father of us all’. Remarkably, all Thomas’ sharply-observed nature poems were written during WWI. At this session Rev. Jim Corrigall will consider whether Thomas is in fact a poet of war.
Burnley is twinned with Vitry-sur-Seine, which is just a few km from the centre of Paris in the Ile de France region. As a significant proportion of Ile de France’s population originate from places outside metropolitan France, we will look at extracts from texts which reflect the multicultural heritage of the area. This session is suitable for students and anyone with an interest in France and the French language. TS

Bringing Poems to life with Song - Janet Swan MA Burnley Mechanics, Basement Studio | 10:30 - 12:00 Discover poems that are songs (or songs that are poems!). Compare “read” vs “sung” and maybe even try singing them. Janet, an inspirational singing coach, will help you and others to find your voice, with no need to be able to read music. “Janet gets the impossible out of us. I never thought I could sing, but I have achieved a life’s ambition of singing with others”. Over 10 years later, now her mother has died, Emma finds herself asking the question for herself. Emma’s Mum was a librarian, Emma is a library assistant. Especially created for libraries, this show goes on a journey through time, mother-daughter love and life re-evaluation. A funny, moving, inspiring tale using poetry, theatre and library books.

Daniel Blythe has been a published author for over 20 years and his work has ranged across fantasy, sci-fi and the supernatural, as well as more Earthbound stories. He will be talking about his work for the Doctor Who books and how his life-long love of the show kicked off his life as a reader and writer, as well as his many other influences.
What happens when a mixed race teenage lad from Northern England finds himself in a Jamaican prison? He is beaten and abused and, most annoyingly, he is referred to as ‘white man’. Locks is a memoir by Ash Nugent. In this session Ash will be discussing themes from the book, including the tensions that arise when we rely too heavily on simplistic binaries (particularly race, sexuality and gender) to define our identities. Ash will also be discussing the work he does in prisons and the application of Joseph Campbell’s theory of the hero’s journey in mythology to our everyday lives. Refreshments will be on sale.

James Davies, Poet in Residence at The University of Surrey, is based in Manchester and author of a number of works including Plants, A Dog and Acronyms. Stack is a new minimalist booklength poem recently published by Carcanet. The text in Stack derives from a number of minimal ‘interventions’ which he has conducted in order to intensely familiarise or de-familiarise the environment and self.
- Letter Writing Project Meet up / Coffee Morning hosted by Sir John Thursby Community College Little Barista | 09:30 - 11:30 The inter-generational project ‘Letter for Better’ aims to combat loneliness by matching students with older Burnley residents. This meet up session will see some of the participating students meet their writing partners in person. Come to this session to enjoy a coffee, meet those involved in the project and learn more about the art of letter writing. Refreshments will be on sale.

Burnley Borough Bobbies – the first ten years of a police officer’s life in the 1960’s - with author Mike Griffin Pop-Up Festival Venue | 10:00 - 10:45 plus Q&A

Mike’s inspiration to write this book was to reveal his wonderful colleagues, recall the varied incidents they dealt with and the wide range of emotions they experienced from joy and laughter, boredom, mischief, to unfortunately, grief and sadness. Mike will explain how they worked and compare it with policing in the present day with officers dealing with significant budget cuts whilst still serving and protecting the public.

What Inspires You To Write? - Local Author Panel

Pop-Up Festival Venue | 14:30 - 16:00 plus Q&A At this interactive session three local authors will discuss what inspires them to write and read from their work. Barbara McHallam finally realised her ambition to become a writer a few years ago. Now, she is an active member of local writers group Pennine Ink and has self-published three novels in the women’s contemporary fiction genre, Precious Moments, It Began in Barbados and her most recent novel Matches.
Author Denise Beddows Pop-Up Festival Venue | 12:15 - 13:00 plus Q&A Denise will talk about her book Odd Man Out – A Motiveless Murder?. In 1948, Rawtenstall was rocked by its first ever murder. An elderly woman, described by her family as ‘abnormal’, was brutally beaten to death. A middle-aged, transgendered bus conductress, Margaret ‘Bill’ Allen, who barely knew the victim, was hanged at Strangeways prison for an allegedly motiveless murder, despite campaigning by her only friend (and probably lover) Annie. 70 years on, Denise uncovers evidence which was suppressed at the time and asks whether the verdict and society’s treatment of ‘Bill’ would be much different today.
Terence Park began writing in 2009. He has published two novels, several collections of short stories, and a book about Burnley Grammar School. Most of his life has been spent in and around Burnley. Laura Sheridan is the author of nine novels, published on Amazon. She writes under the name of G.L. Sheridan. She enjoys science-fiction and speculative fiction and there’s always a touch of humour in her work. TS

Can you tell a story in 10, 20 or 50 words? What is Flash Fiction? It is a style of fiction where brevity is key! It is a story told in few words. There will be Flash Fiction workshops during Burnley Literary Festival 2017 to help you. See burnleyliteraryfestival.co.uk for details.

We are inviting you to write a short story of a maximum of 10, 20 or 50 words. It can be about any topic, in any style, but must be your own work.
You can submit your entry to any and all categories. The winning entry from each category will be read out on BBC Radio Lancashire and the winners will appear live on air. The winner of each category will also receive a prize of books to the value of £100.
