FDesign an Ad showcases Burnaby students’ creativity

or over 20 years our annual Design an Ad special feature has given students in Burnaby a chance to show their creativity. The results in past years, in which Burnaby NOW has partnered with Burnaby Schools, local businesses and organizations to design ads for the special section, have been eye-catching, compelling and memorable, and this year is no exception.

The students’ advertisements, always creative and insightful — and often humorous — draw attention to their subjects’ strengths while also at times underlining important messages. Participating businesses and organizations choose which students’ advertisements get to run on burnabynow.com and in this special section.

We’re grateful once again to all the students and teachers who took part this year. As always, their co-operation and enthusiasm is much appreciated. I’d also like to extend our thanks to the participating advertisers, who continue to make this annual project a success.

AWhere Learning is Your Superpower

t Burnaby Schools we create learning experiences that empower students.

This year’s theme for the District’s own ad designed by students is “Where Learning is Your Superpower.” We live in a society that’s filled with fast-paced change. Core skills, such as creative and critical thinking, are important for thriving – no matter what the future brings. In a sense, learning is a kind of superpower students can draw upon throughout their lives for the opportunities of today and tomorrow.

Students in the District are given the chance to explore a career and see if it sparks interest or joy. This competition for Design an Ad is but one example of that: an opportunity to try marketing and advertising while still in elementary school.

We also offer what’s called Programs of Choice. There are dozens of options at the high school level, including everything from technology and trades, to sports academies and academic enrichment. Students can delve into their interests, find their strengths, or pursue a career – all while fulfilling their academic requirements.

We are proud of public education in Burnaby. Schools are not only places of learning. They’re where friendships are forged, connections with the community are made, and where students are encouraged to explore their strengths – or, what you might call, their superpowers.
