Heights bulldogs Bulldogs looking to build, thrive off strong 2015 season $ By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com A simple name change has not changed the attitude of the newly-named Heights High School varsity football team and its leader as they look ahead to the 2016 campaign and the challenges it presents them. Head coach Stephen Dixon
Westside, Westbury, Lamar (the presumed favorite) and Houston Math Science and Technology School. As is typically the case, such a run is inherently spurred on by the leadership and calming influences of upperclassmen who can help some of the younger players adapt and roll with the ebbs and flows of a season and
early-season jitters which tend to accompany a new quarterback getting in sync with those aforementioned leaders, Dixon believes 2016 just might be the type of year that coaches, players and fans can only dream about. “If and when we click together with the offense and defense and special teams (all at once), this could be a

and the Bulldogs are looking to build upon a strong 2015 campaign which saw them finish 9-1 in the regular season (6-1 in District 20-6A, finishing the regular season just one game behind perennial power Lamar) before falling at the hands of Strake Jesuit in the opening playoff round. That would be saying a good bit, seeing as Dixon is talking about improving on the performances of the previous five seasons, which have seen his Bulldogs win 39 total games and reach the state playoffs in each of the five previous seasons Having won on average nearly eight games a season since 2010, one prize which has always eluded the Bulldogs has been that deep playoff run which energizes everyone within the community For Dixon, repeating (and then building upon) the positives of the previous five seasons and taking that major step forward to make a deep playoff run is contingent upon two major factors: dedication and a belief in themselves that they can indeed play with anybody they step on the field to battle with each and every week. “If we don’t believe we can take over this district it will never happen. We have a huge task ahead of us in defeating teams in our district,” he said of Bellaire, Chavez,
keep them calm when the chips are down. Dixon referenced players such as Cameron Johnson, Cody Roscoe, Davion Zeno, Jacob Garcia and Jonathon Campos to be the ones who step up and lead the Bulldogs’ charge in 2016. A major focus for the Bulldogs has been simply making sure the offensive side of the ball is in sync. Such a turnaround normal-
special year,” he said. Besides making it to the playoffs each year, Dixon said it remains his goal to help the young men put in his charge during their time at Heights get looked at on the collegiate level in order to give them the best possible opportunities to succeed in life once they leave the walls of Heights, whether or not their endeavors wind up involving athletics at any level in any
“Any player will tell you that they want to play on the college level. If they have the talent, heart and determination as well as the grades to play at the next level then I really feel that I have to step up and do what I can for them.” - Coach Dixon ly presents a bit of a challenge under normal circumstances, and especially offensively with a new quarterback at the helm. “We have to get several guys ready to play,” he told The Leader. Defensively, Dixon said the Bulldogs will never shy away from the intensity, aggresiveness and tenacity which has been a staple of the team for years. Defensively we will just be our usual aggressive self,” he said. Should all aspects of the game come together and the team is able to weather the

Heights High’s Davion Zeno named Athlete of the Week For The Leader
Raising Cane’s #103, at 3007 Ella Blvd., has graciously partnered with The Leader to feature our student athletes from Heights High School, Lutheran North, Scarborough, St. Pius X, St. Thomas and Waltrip who are making an impact in the classroom and as a teammate. In order to be the Athlete of the Week, a student must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, as well as be a leader in the classroom and as a team mate. This week’s Athlete of the Week is Heights High School’s Davion Zeno. Zeno is starting his senior year and plays wide receiver and free safety on the Bulldog Varsity Football team. We chatted with Zeno for a quick interview.
What has been your most memorable moment/game as a player so far?
If you could play anywhere in college, where would it be and why?
I would like to play at Boise St. The place is beautiful and I like the cold weather. I feel as though I fit well in their football scheme.
What drew you to the sport(s) you are now playing?
I started only playing with friends in the park and I would always score and tackle everyone. They had a little league football team that they were all a part of. They asked me to play for them and I asked my mom. Originally, she said no. I remembered crying and begging her to play. She finally did and I fell in love with the sport of football.
Who is your favorite athlete/biggest influence? Dez Bryant is my favorite athlete because he plays the game with a lot of intensity, passion, and heart.
What is your go-to food/ meal before a game? I like to eat something light before a game. I eat snacks like crackers and protein bars.
Who is your favorite musical artist?
Right now I listen to Lil Uzi Vert because he gets me hyped.
Do you have any pregame rituals, if so, what are they?
The night before I try to go to sleep early but usually I can’t because I’m so excited to play. I always have big breakfast on a game day. I listen to music on the way to the stadium. I always double tie my cleats. We would like to thank Raising Cane’s #103 for partnering with The Leader to spotlight these great students. Special thanks to Raising Cane’s managing partner, Justin Harrod, who has something special planned for each school. “During the week of your ‘Athlete of the Week’ come and visit the Raising Canes on Ella that Tuesday night from 4 to 10 p.m. and mention “Athlete of the Week,” Harrod said. “Raising Canes will donate 15% of those proceeds back to the school.”
Davion Zeno
I would have to take it all the way back to little league. You always remember the first touchdown you ever score. I was playing tight end and it was a throwing play. I ran right up the seam and the quarterback threw it right to me. I ran 50 yards into the end zone.

St. Thomas Eagles Eagles look to take fifth consecutive district title By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader Last season, the St. Thomas Eagles breezed through district, as they outscored their opponents 194-26, before their season ended in the semifinals against eventual state champion Prestonwood Christian Academy. The Eagles, who are coming off of their fourth consecutive district title in as many years under fourth-year Head Coach Tom Fitzpatrick, will look to make it five straight. Entering his fifth year as head coach of the St. Thomas Eagles, Tim Fitzpatrick will have to rely on many inexperienced players if the team hopes to repeat as Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Division-I, District-1 champions. “We have a lot of new faces starting on varsity, but we have all the confidence in them to get the job done,” Fitzpatrick said. One of the biggest holes that STHS will have to fill is at quarterback, as the departure of Michael Keating has left the team without a proven starter. As if having new teammates was not hard enough on the veteran players, the Eagles are implementing a new offense this year, so the players are having to re-learn the play calls and signals. Fitzpatrick said that the players have been receptive to the changes and admits that the coaching staff has to be patient in order to make sure that the athletes are de-

veloping. Despite all of the green faces on the team, it is up to the older players to establish a culture of success. “We are counting on our returning starters from last year to set the standard early and often for the younger players,” Fitzpatrick said. “Guys like Max Brower, Sam Yeboah, Daniel Penaloza, Brig Banks and Max Banes need to lead by example on and off the field.” Brower & Co. have won district every year they’ve played on varsity, but this year may prove to be the most difficult because of a reloaded roster and a remodeled offense. Although winning district is always a goal for the Eagles, Fitzpatrick believes that there are other objectives that the team needs to accomplish in order to be successful. “Our main goals are to play for one another, play with
a chip on our shoulder and earn everything we want as a team,” Fitzpatrick said. “Wins are important, but playing as a team, improving as a team everyday is a daily goal.” Despite the many new faces, the team will still return many dual-threat players like senior tight end/linebacker Brig Banks, senior running back/defensive back Max Brower and junior offensive/ defensive lineman Sam Yeboah. The Eagles will have a firsttime starter at quarterback in either senior Jairan Parker or sophomore Peyton Matocha. Whoever starts, though, will have a very dominant and experienced offensive line in front of them, anchored by Yeboah, juniors Max Banes and Haden Richie. Also joining the offense this year is new offensive coordinator Bobby Merritt, who spent last season as the direc-

tor of recruiting at the University of Tennessee. Merritt will implement a new offense, which may take time for players to learn, but Fitzpatrick said that the team is “receptive to change.” On defense, junior Melvin Larkins will join Banks in the linebacker corps. Both players made the Texas Association of Private and Parochial schools All-District team last season. Whether the Eagles finish on top of the district, STHS will still make the playoffs because they play in a four-team district. While there are many fresh players, the Eagles are still good enough to beat Concordia Lutheran High School and Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School. The team that will give them the biggest challenge this season will be district-rival St. Pius X High School.

Lutheran North Lions Lions looking to make playoffs with ‘consistent, high-level play’ in senior Jacob Elizondo, juniors A.J. Bennett and Adam Hernandez and junior transfer Clay Phoenix, who Robbins said “has superb route-running skills and sticky hands.” On the defensive side, it will all start up front for the Lions, as junior defensive tackle Lee Nino and sophomore defensive end Jimmie Walker are the anchors on the line. Nino was a force last year as he led the team in total tackles, sacks and tackles for loss and Robbins said that Walker looked dominant against Lutheran High South last spring when the teams held joint practices. Robbins is expecting big
By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader Although it took the Lutheran High North Lions three years to win a game under Head Coach Nathan Robbins, their next win could come as soon as their first game against the KIPP Academy Kerberoes. When Nathan Robbins took over as head football coach of Lutheran High North Lions in 2013, he had the high task of building a program that was almost non-existent when he got there. Now in his fourth season, Robbins knows that in order to bring success to the program, he’ll need help from the other coaches on the team. “Our young and talented coordinators are doing a great job of placing our players in situations where they can be successful,” Robbins said. Despite the team’s yearby-year improvement, the road that the Lions will have to travel has become harder this season as the district they are in, Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Division-III District-6, has added two teams. One of the new schools, Northland Christian, is the heavy favorite to win district after finishing last season as a Division-II quarterfinalist. Although the odds may seem stacked against them, Robbins said that the Lions could win district and make the playoffs with “consistent, high-level play.” Many of the players who

Robbins was able to get to join the team are now upperclassmen and have experience and familiarity within Robbins’ system. The backfield duo of senior quarterback Drew ReBeau and senior running back Atanasio Simba has the potential to be as good as any in the district. While Simba only carried the ball a total of 60 times last season, he averaged an astonishing 6.1 yards per carry and will be the feature back with plenty of chances to run the ball this year. ReBeau has the frame and size to be an elite quarterback but will have to continue working on fundamentals, like his footwork and accuracy. He’ll have a productive stable of receivers to throw to

Photo by Christina Martinez Lutheran High North’s Senior running back Atanasio Simba.
Lutheran from P. 4B things from many players on his team but said senior Atanasio Simba could do something special this year. “Look for senior running back and captain Atanasio Simba to break 1,000 yards rushing and potentially push the envelope for 2,000,” Robbins said. “He may be the fastest player in the district.” While he believes that the talent is there for LHN to compete, ultimately, it will depend on him and his coaching staff to develop and polish the players’ skills. Unfortunately for the Lions, they play in a competitive district that may have gotten even better with the additions of Northland Christian Acad-
emy, who are favorites to win district, and Cypress Community Christian. Out of the 10 teams in the district, only three will make the playoffs, so competition will be fierce. Regardless of where they finish this year, Robbins is proud of how far the team has come and is ready to get the season underway. “The inspiring coaching that our staff is doing has moved the program from four players reporting to camp four years ago to having 36 players out from a student body of 160,” Robbins said. “The momentum has a buzz on campus that we are ready to share with the LHN community on Friday nights.”

St. Pius X Panthers SPX Panthers set eyes on state championship Nov. 4th. With a new quarterback at the helm, Hill said that the primary focus on offense during training camp has been to get the unit to play faster. On the defensive end, the attention has been on forcing turnovers after only posting a plus-1 takeaway margin last season. While St. Thomas will be the biggest obstacle in the
By Jonathan Valadez For The Leader Entering his third year as head coach of the St. Pius X Panthers, Stephen Hill will look to do some things that his team has yet to accomplish: win district and beat St. Thomas High School. After finishing second in district play in consecutive years, the St. Pius X Panthers will look to make the leap into first place and beyond this season under third-year Head Coach Stephen Hill. The Panthers have struggled against district rival St. Thomas High School in recent years, but Hill is optimistic with his team’s chances against the Eagles and the rest of the district. Despite the optimism, he knows that certain things must go right for SPX to succeed. “In order to win district, we will need to stay healthy and continue to improve each week, Hill said. Behind Hill, the Panthers have gone undefeated against all of their other district opponents, but in the two meetings against St. Thomas, SPX has been blown away. In the two combined games, the Panthers were outscored by an 87-33 margin. The third time could be the charm for Hill and Co. as this year could prove to be a rebuilding year for St. Thomas. Also, a new hope has emerged in sophomore quarterback Grant Gunnell. While winning district will be the focus during the regular season, once playoffs start, Hill and the Panthers will turn their attention to capturing a state championship.
The start of the 2016-17 school year marks an exciting time at St. Pius X High School. As Carmen Garrett Armistead begins her first year as head of school, the dreams of the St. Pius X community come to life with the opening of The Raye

In 10 games last season, Gunnell completed 64 percent of his passes while throwing 16 touchdowns compared to just four interceptions. Joining Gunnell in the backfield is junior Alec Harris who rushed for over 900 yards and 13 touchdowns. Harris also caught nine passes for 101 yards and two more touchdowns. The receiving corps took the biggest hit on the offense, as their top two receivers departed due to graduation. Before they get to that stage, the Panthers will need their seniors to step up early on and become leaders as the season progresses. They will also need sophomore quarterback Grant Gunnell to pick up where he left off last year, as
he started to see action and find success midway through the season. Gunnell said that he has confidence in his current receivers, including his brother Will Gunnell. The Panthers will also get a boost with transfer-receiver Bryson Jackson, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds. His size should allow him to help create separation and catch balls over smaller defenders. On the other side of the ball, senior defensive back Ayrton Payne will be the foundation for the Panthers’ defense. Payne led the team in tackles last year with 84. He also had one forced fumble and an interception. Senior middle linebacker

McKamri Bowie will also be a force on the defense. He recorded 79 tackles, three sacks and forced two fumbles. Overall, the team was plus1 on takeaways and will need to improve that number if they want to win the district crown this year. Last season, the Panthers finished second in district and made it to the semifinals before losing to state runner-up Bishop Dunne Catholic School. This year, SPX will look to win its first district title since 2010 and first state championship since 2007. With Gunnell under center, the Panthers have the potential to finish the season undefeated. There biggest challenge will come when they travel to play against St. Thomas on

TACL B27781E
The Waltrip Rams are looking to make some noise in 2016 on the heels of a season which saw them finish 6-5 overall and 4-3 in District 24-5A before falling to Stratford in the opening round of the playoffs. Head coach Steven Wright sees boundless potential for his roster, which the coaches and players themselves must tap into in order to keep up with powerhouse Madison. “We have to become consistent with our linemen and develop identity on both offense and defense,” Wright said. “We have some explosive kids on offense this year and we need to spread the ball around and keep the opposing defenses honest.” To do so, Wright said his squad has worked on adding to their depth and consistency on both sides of the ball to create more havoc for opponents. “We have worked on our aggressiveness on defense and we hope to continue our creativity on special teams,” he said. As for any team, senior leadership is a must, and Wright said Waltrip will lean on Brantley Williams, Sean Goodman, Johnathan Chapa, Jonathan Schnaufer, Dennis Gafford and Reynard Lavigne from the opening snap. “All of these young men had great summers and have potential to continue playing football after high school,” he said. “They must help lead and outwork so the others attempt to copy their efforts.” Though it remains every coach’s goal to attain on-field success, Wright noted that Waltrip boasts one of its most accomplished groups in years with regards to performance in the classroom heading into the season, with the group

Spartan players, coaches eye another step forward in 2016 By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com The Scarborough Spartans finally ended a long losing streak in 2015, and the 2016 season kicks off with head coach Keith Alex maintaining the mantra that the program is headed in a different direction, and that 2015 was only the beginning. Though recent history might say the odds are stacked against the Spartans coming off a 1-9 campaign, Alex would put his team up against any in the district if they play as they are capable of each week and everything falls into place. He said he will lean heavily on the senior leadership of Brandon Gonzales Hernandez, Damion Rodriguez and Douglas May as well junior Jared Holley to be strong, calming presences for the team from the season’s opening whistle. “Each of these players has worked hard to improve and are great examples of veteran leadership,” Alex said. in the off-season has been attempting to put the players in their charge in the right posi-
tions to be successful, whether that be through the players’ own dedication to and development of their craft or through the coaching staff ’s polishing of their skills. “Some of our younger players have gotten stronger and bigger since last season, and for some, that meant moving to a different position,” Alex said. “We want to maximize their abilities and give them sound coaching.” While success on the field is a yearly goal, Alex stressed that his coaches and staff put just as much or more emphasis on their athletes becoming better students and citizens to ensure the best possible chance for their success outside the walls of Scarborough High School. He told The Leader that just as important as attempting to build a football powerhouse on the gridiron is attempting
to build an academic powerhouse as well to help their students benefit both themselves and society after they walk across the graduation stage and prepare to enter the rest of their lives “We spend just as much time talking with them about being positive influences on others,” he said. “This could mean being great examples for their siblings, friends, fellow students, or just anyone they come into contact with. HIT! provides multi-sport indoor training for all Learn SpaniSh Page 12B • Saturday, August 27, 2016
By Landan Kuhlmann landan@theleadernews.com Have a need for baseball, softball or speed and agility training and don’t want to fight the nightmare Houston rush hour traffic to get to lessons? If so, then HIT! Indoor is the perfect spot. Located at 1544 Campbell Rd., HIT! provides indoor space for youth sports training and practice through offering team workout space, cage rentals, gym equipment, sport specific personalized training services and youth sport camps to the Spring Branch Memorial community. Owner/founder Tim Heckler and his trainers provide lessons and training for pitching and batting as well as speed, agility and quickness training for multi-sport practices for those youths ages 6-18. In putting down roots in Spring Branch little more than a year ago, Heckler said the company felt there was not enough opportunity for the local kids in the area to get the proper multi-sport training, which HIT! now provides. “Most of the facilities which offer the same services are a little further out on the Beltway or in Katy,” he said. “There just are not that many facilities in this region—you’d have to go to the north side of town or the west side of town or down towards the Galleria. With us being here, kids have a location that is local to the Spring Branch and Memorial neighborhoods.” Amid youths having many electronic options, allowing them to sit inside on the couch, Heckler believes facilities such as HIT! serve to provide the area’s youth an inviting avenue of getting off the couch and steering them back towards physical activity, thereby leading to an effective, healthy lifestyle. “This provides them a way of feeding more towards the aspect of getting them back
