The Boston University Executive MBA

An investment for life that pays immediate dividends. The time, energy, and resources you invest in an Executive MBA (EMBA) program represents a significant commitment on your behalf and must deliver measurable returns. The Boston University EMBA program provides that—and more.

Our integrated curriculum trains students to think about business issues holistically rather than as individual functional areas. Thus, you will be able to apply what you learn on Friday and Saturday to your work life on Monday. The principles you learn as an EMBA student—whether strategic marketing, financial analysis, managerial accounting, conflict management, or team building—are immediately applicable to the way you do business. And hearing the perspective from classmates in diverse industries and functional areas will influence the way you think

about your work. Our students tell us that their colleagues are eager to hear what they have learned over the weekend. By sharing your new insights and tools in this way, you’ll increasingly find new ways to add value to your organization. The dividends from our program pay out both during the course of study and over a lifetime. Our alumni consistently report that this program accelerates advancement, increases salaries, opens up new opportunities, and prepares them for any leadership challenge. They achieve greater professional success, which is precisely why students come to the EMBA program.

“EMBA changed my approach to business. I knew the first ingredient I needed was solid business knowledge. EMBA supplied that in spades, but what I underestimated were the lifelong relationships that form during the program. Years later I still talk business with my fellow EMBAs constantly. Completing EMBA with a cohort has proven to be the most valuable part of the program for me. In fact, I couldn’t have started my software and helicopter companies without the combination of these two key ingredients.” Matthew Nowosiadly President, Now Business Intelligence and Now City Tours EMBA 21

TRIP DESTINATIONS

The BU Executive MBA Difference Deeper learning. Broader vision.

The highly ranked Boston University Executive MBA Program is designed to transform high potential mid- to senior-level managers into leaders who have a comprehensive understanding of how organizations work effectively.

This intense 18-month program culminates in a Master of Business Administration degree, providing you with the required skill set and core competencies to maximize marketplace opportunities and overcome business challenges while balancing your learning, career, and personal life. The program’s general management focus is designed to give students a strong foundation, emphasizing team learning, personal development, and leadership skills.

Our modular, integrated curriculum is based on three fundamental principles: Management as a System: The EMBA curriculum is fully integrated across management disciplines and topics. Our cross-functional approach helps you build a solid understanding of management systems and value creation. Even as you study and dissect specific areas of practice such as marketing, accounting, and finance, your discussions will focus on the organization as a single entity, and the interrelationship among functions. Team Learning: The EMBA program delivers a structured framework of group study and assignments. A unique, team-learning course runs throughout the program and focuses on leveraging the power of teams, as both a leader and a member. With faculty guidance, you’ll come to understand how to work collaboratively at an advanced level, how to maximize shared knowledge, and how to use leadership to inspire success. Global Perspective: You’ll examine the global context of issues and develop a broad international perspective. In addition to developing skills to analyze diverse global economies in a concentrated international module, you’ll have the opportunity to visit a developing country and experience its economy firsthand.

Program Structure and Curriculum

Integrated curriculum. Collaborative environment. A fully integrated curriculum means that the EMBA program is designed, packaged, and delivered so that students master the interconnections between all subject areas.

The structure of the program operates on a principle of immersion. Students experience the entire 18-month program as a cohorted group and spend intense, concentrated time learning and engaging with fellow classmates and faculty members. The faculty team leading each module or residence week rigorously assesses the curriculum and program structure to ensure that readings, cases, and simulations provide students with maximum analytical depth and potential for synergistic understanding. In EMBA, there are no stand-alone courses like there are in a traditional full- or part-time MBA program. Although each student must demonstrate competence in every core subject, the coursework continually reinforces the interrelationship between these functional areas. The international trip during Residence Week 3 is directly linked to the Capstone Project in the final module. This link offers the opportunity to synthesize the program curriculum by developing a detailed business plan for a new venture. The Executive MBA Program begins in January, when students are assigned to small teams. The curriculum is delivered in five integrated modules and four residence weeks with Team Learning spanning the entire program. Each of the five modules focus on developing cross-functional knowledge by studying traditional subject areas in an integrated fashion. Classes meet every other Friday and Saturday during the modules. Each residence week emphasizes core competency and capability development. Three of the week-long sessions take place on campus and the fourth is the international field seminar.

And to make the learning process as convenient as possible, each student is provided an Apple iPad and custom apps to efficiently access all course materials online. We’ve created these tools for EMBA students with the view that executives will increasingly need to understand the real time applications of digital technology throughout their careers. What better way to develop these skills than integrating them into the educational experience? Hotel accommodations are provided during class weekends and residence weeks to provide additional opportunities for collaboration, team building, and networking.

Sponsoring Organizations

You—and your company—benefit. The EMBA format allows senior managers to expand their skill sets and core competencies while remaining active, engaged contributors within their sponsoring organization. Because so much of the learning in the EMBA program comes from the sharing of knowledge in the classroom and team environment, it is critical that you attend class every weekend. You and your sponsors must commit to the program’s format and schedule in advance. It is required, therefore, that you obtain a letter of sponsorship from your organization.

6

Here are a few of the benefits companies receive from sponsoring students in the Executive MBA program: Fresh Perspectives: Students consult with faculty members and classmates as they think through real-time work issues, gaining insight, developing perspective, and considering different approaches. Our EMBA program provides a dynamic sounding board for students to discuss ideas and discover what resonates. That knowledge is then applied back to their organization. Employee Retention: Many companies sponsor participation in the EMBA program as a means of retaining high-performing individuals. Companies also benefit as their employees develop new competencies and greater leadership skills. Immediate Results: Students share new ideas and best practices, and seek to add value to their organization. They work smarter, ask more substantive questions, make better decisions, and are increasingly more poised and effective in crucial meetings. They learn to think of the organization as a whole. The positive effects of the EMBA training are observable from the start.

“The Boston University EMBA was a great investment for our company. We were able to send a high potential executive to the program who had limited P&L management experience prior to EMBA. She was able to complete the program in a short period of time, maintain existing job performance, and come back to the business ready to take on more responsibility. We were able to move her immediately into a senior marketing role with P&L management responsibility. She was able to perform at an extremely high level, achieving top quartile year over year sales increases in a very competitive market.” Mike Crosby COO, Irving Oil Sponsor of Kathi Webber Director to Consumer Marketing

The EMBA program exceeded my expectations. On day one, you are immersed in the concept of business as a system, and you begin to learn how to interact with team members more effectively to accomplish your goals. Each module is complementary and synergistic, with team projects that reinforce the concepts taught in the classroom. I am able to directly apply those concepts when I am back in the office.

In the EMBA program I learned from the disciplines of my fellow students, and those perspectives affect all my management decisions. The diversity of thought and experience displayed during team learning projects taught me about efficiency and playing to people’s individual strengths. They gave me increased exposure to new insights. Throughout the 18 months of the program I rapidly developed a high-level strategic perspective. EMBA propelled my career from a senior finance role to a senior leadership role.

The Boston University Executive MBA program has been a truly rewarding experience for me. Not only did I see a tangible return on my investment (promotion to senior management ranks within six months of starting the program), I also benefited enormously from the incredibly deep and broad knowledge of the faculty and fellow students. Enrolling in this program has been my best career move to date! Nivedita Mehra Comverse, Senior Director, Product Management and Operations EMBA 20
