Bull Pen! Fancorp publishing

I hope everyone has gotten through the winter weather ok and I’m sure you are as anxious as I am for Spring.

(800) 664-5617 sales@fancorp.net

It’s that time of the year again, and I hope you find this Breeder’s Guide issue useful and informative when it comes time to make those big breeding decisions we all face. As we all know, what we do now can effect our programs for a long time to come. I’d also like to take the time to encourage as many of our youth members as possible to get involved in the upcoming Junior Futurity events. Our first event will be in Ardmore, Okla. in June. Remember that you can compete in Junior Futurity events with bulls that have participated in other open futurities. The ABBI doesn’t restrict a Junior Futurity animal from any of the other competition opportunities available to reach its fullest earnings potential. At all ABBI produced or sanctioned Junior Futurities, points qualify toward the ABBI Year-End Youth Awards. They will be awarded on the basis of one point for every bull beaten in each go-round of competition. We’ll be expanding the Youth Division this season, look for more details coming soon on www. americanbuckingbull.com. I’d also like to welcome Hannah Gant on board. She is taking over the popular Junior Breeder column and is our youngest contributor (as well as a Junior ABBI member herself). There are some exciting changes happening and I look forward to a great season of ABBI competition. Thanks for your support.

NEWS, NOTES & NODS Super Classics The PBR BFTS events in Tulsa (July 16-18) and Springfield (September 17-19) will also be ABBI Super Classics. Super Classics will feature two rounds of Classic animals facing off against the world’s best cowboys. This will mean even more TV exposure for our up-and-coming young stars.

Classic Champs at Cowboy Stadium ABBI had two Classic Champs at the PBR’s Iron Man event at Cowboy Stadium. Both Black Pearl (45.5) and Crosswired (44.5) had great performances. Crosswired faced Zack Brown and Black Pearl faced Travis Briscoe. Neither rider could make the whistle. Reigning PBR World Champ Code Blue managed to shake loose both of his riders, but Valdiron de Oliviera held on the longest to Code Blue to claim the $260,000 prize.

Box K Buys Out Alan Murphy

The Chicken is still kickin’! 2007 PBR World Champion Bucking Bull Chicken on a Chain recently passed the 100 PBR outs mark. Congrats to Jeff Robinson, Mike Tedesco and Larry the Cable Guy on having a champion who is still at the top of his game after so many years! Chicken most recently bucked off J.B Mauney in Dallas where the judges gave him a big 45.75 score.

Taylor Omission

Ken King (Box K Cattle) had a rough 2009 when he lost his great bucker Apollo. But 2010 looks like it will bring good things to King and his family. Box K bought Alan Murphy’s buckers (50 head) and his rig. King plans on being at as many ABBI and PBR events as possible starting in April.

Homestead Genetic’s Sale is April 3 fffffffffffffffff

L

ast year, Gene Baker put on an outstanding sale. This year, the Homestead Genetic’s Sale is back. The second Annual Houdini’s Blue Chip Production Sale will be held on April 3 at 1:30 pm CST. “This year’s sale will be televised exclusively on RFD-TV. As with all my sales, I offer free delivery on all cattle purchased to designated drop-off areas,” shared Baker. Because the sale will be shown only on RFD-TV, you will need to call to get a buyer’s number in advance to bid. If you are the winning bidder, Superior Productions will then contact you to arrange delivery. Baker shared a success story from his last sale. “Terry Williams purchased a Houidini x Baker bull that he believes is the best bull in his herd. Calves that have sold from heifers have brought significant returns and many are winning in the competitive ranks. These are the type of results you can expect from any of the cattle offered at the sale.” As anyone who has put on a sale knows, it takes a lot of work. “I would like to thank my operations manager, Jerry Wright, as well as Marcia Bennett, Emily Otto and my auctioneer, Bruce McCarty,” said Baker. “ And a special thanks to all the staff from Superior Productions for putting this year’s sale together.”

Auctioneer Bruce McCarty and Gene Baker during the Fall Classic V in October.

Homestead Genetic’s foundation is Houdini, one of the industry’s most prolific sires. There are over 1,000 animals in the ABBI registry with Houdini as a sire. Some of the most recent successes to come out of this bloodline include siring ABBI Classic Champion, Black Pearl and the ABBI Wild Card Champion, Copp Hou. Last year Houdini was also the sire to two PBR short go bulls. The Champion Bull from the PRCA National Finals was also a Houdini son and out of Baker’s 602 Wolfman cow. For more information visit superiorlivestock.com or homesteadgenetics.net. The Homestead website has pictures of the nearly 100 lots to be offered, as well as video on the animals for you to preview. Whether you are looking for a bull to compete with now or in the future, or a heifer to bring some Houdini magic into your program, the April 3 sale is one you will not want to miss.

Roy Carter 2nd Ever Production Sale Preview f

fffffffffffffffffffff

O

n Wednesday May 12 the ABBI Sanctioned Roy Carter Production Sale will provide it’s 2nd ever opportunity to purchase genetics from a deeply historical and continuallyevolving modern program. With important contributions to the bucking bull industry like super-sire 00 Super Dave, multi-time PBR Bucking Bull of the Year Contender 13X Kid Rock and ABBI heavy-hitter 233 Eddie Munster, the Carter program has cultivated a perpetual bucking and producing paradigm. Bucking bulls have played a essential role in the life of Roy Carter who rode bulls for twenty years and eventually began breeding and raising them in 1992. An enormous stepping stone for Carter’s breeding program stemmed from a purchase he made from brother Punk who was forced to sell some of his cattle because of a back injury. These cattle were distributed among many respected pro-

ffffffffffffffffffff

The mating between RCX and RC10 ultimately produced one of the PBR’s all time fan-favorites and bucking super-star sensation Kid Rock. “Roy bought that group of cattle from me and held onto them,” said Punk. “People would ask him all the time why he was not getting rid of any of them. Roy is very sentimental and lives and breathes these cattle and bulls, so he stuck with all of these cows and it really paid off. Most of these cows are still alive and still producing. They are 19 years old this year and everyone of them is bred and has a 2010 calf on them,” explained Punk before he talked about Alligator. “Alligator was a freak of nature. He was a really pretty bull and would kick really high. I remember the first time I saw Kid Rock. He bucked just like his dad Alligator, real high and way up over his head,” said Punk. Punk and Roy along with their father John are wellknown in the cutting industry and the Carter name has

Over the years many note-worthy bulls have stemmed from this ornate and industrious program eventually finding themselves on trucks of some of the best-known contractors in the business. grams around the country including Roy’s. Among the cattle Punk Carter sold were two half-brothers sired by a brahman-watusi bull. These two bulls would later go on to paint a monumental portion of bucking bull genetic history. The first 00 Super Dave, was sold to Pages, went to the NFR and became a very influential sire, while the other RCX Alligator followed suite and was sold to Roy among a set of 14 bulls and 13 heifers. Among those cattle sold to Roy was a heifer that would later be known as RC 10. Roy held onto Alligator for some time before selling him to stock contractor David Bailey. Alligator was hauled to three NFR’s by Bailey before ultimately ending up back with Roy who then put him on some cows, one of them being RC 10.

been synonymous with success in both the cutting and the bucking bull worlds. In addition to the purchase from his brother, Roy always made a point to implement the best into his program. One bull Roy used because he was the best bull out there at the time was White Lightning. Additionally over time Roy also added the influence of Mexican fighting blood from bulls with NFR calibar-heat and some highlander blood through breeding to Toy Tiger. Over the years many note-worthy bulls have stemmed from this ornate and industrious program eventually finding themselves on trucks of some of the best-known contractors in the business. Some of these brazen buckers are; Flying U’s 31 Typhoon, 88 Festus, 57 John Carter,

Buckshot and Tony Lama, Butler & Sons 171, 132 and 71 Slam Dunk, Mesquite Rodeo’s 5 Fort Worth, Bradford Ivy’s 1RC and Dow, Sonny Linger’s 111 Davy Crockett, Jim Zinzer’s 16 Goat, Western Rodeos’ CT2 Curly, David Bailey’s Copenhagen Pie, Awesome Possum, RCX Alligator and RC 27 Super Star, Circle D’s 81 Rapid Fire, 07 Black Satan’s Velvet, 3X Hav-a-Chew, and RC and Steiner’s RC, RC7, 11 and Roanie. Off Roy’s truck came Kid Rock, 2X Uncle Kracker, 22X Gator Back, X63 Kryptonite, 11 Anaconda, 322 Eddie Munster, 11 Red Rock and Snow Cone to name a few. The ABBI Sanctioned 2nd Ever Carter Production Sale through approximately 200 lots, provides an opportunity to gain a piece of what has made Roy Carter Bucking Bulls what it is today. Some bull highlights of the sale will be two ‘09 fullbrothers to Kid Rock, PBR Finals bull Fraggle Rock a Mighty Whitey son Carter purchased from Norris Dalton as a 2-year-old at Jerry Nelson’s sale, and buckers LYJ1X and LYJ2X which are full flush brothers out of the prolific cow RC 10 and sired by Little Yellow Jacket. Kid Rock’s genetic influence will always be something Carter promotes heavily, however this year’s sale spotlight will shine on Eddie Munster. All of Carter’s cows will be selling exposed to him and one of the lots sure to raise

eyebrows is that of the dynamic bucker’s dam RC T5. Other female lots that should generate excitement include; a maternal half-sister to Kid Rock sired by Blueberry Wine and a multitude of daughters or grand-daughters by legendary bulls like Reindeer Dippin’, Uncle Kracker, Panhandle Slim, White Lightning, Eddie Munster, Slim Pickens, The Darkness, Alligator, Kid Rock, Captain Crook, Black Scorpion, Toy Tiger and Screamon Deamon. Cows will sell with calves at their sides by Captain Crook, Fraggle Rock, 810 Hemi an NFR bull that was hauled by Stace Smith and Baker 050 a Wolfman son out of a Pacific Bell daughter. Guest consignments from Kevin Loudamy and others will include daughters of Uncle Charlie and Katy Did. When it comes time to listen to pedigrees during the Carter Sale on May 12 the one and only Rob Smets will be doing the reading. Look for him to add colorful insight to many of these lots with genetics that are deeply rooted in hot-blooded Mexican influence. The sale begins at 12 pm at the Buffalo Livestock Market in Buffalo, Texas and can be viewed from the comfort of your home on RFD-TV or via the internet on the Superior Livestock Auction web site.

Diamond S Earth Shattering Bucking Genetics 2nd Annual Event, Sale & Futurity April 30 - May 1

Weatherford, Texas

The Diamond S program boasts many of the industry’s best buckers. Diamond S bovines have regularly dotted the rosters of ABBI, PBR and PRCA venues across the U.S.

Program History:

Bull Power:

David Simpson is the owner of Diamond S Bucking Bulls and a partner in 4L Rodeo Co., Diamond S Rodeo Co., and Exclusive Genetics. In 1996 Simpson’s family bought their Weatherford, Texas ranch and sold 280 acres to Bob Tallman. Having the founder of the RSR as a neighbor peaked Simpson’s bull interest and in 1998 the purchase of some cows and Bo semen opened the door for Diamond S Bucking Bull’s 2002 program launch. Since its beginning, Diamond S has grown and become one of the most recognizable bull companies in the industry. In 2007, the team made a hard run at PBR’s coveted Contractor of Year title and battled their way to an impressive second place finish after a very exciting and well fought race.

The Diamond S program boasts many of the industry’s best buckers. Diamond S bovines have regularly dotted the rosters of ABBI, PBR and PRCA venues across the U.S. Some of the most well-known bulls of big-league caliber that are tied to the Diamond S brand are: Cat Daddy, Avalanche, Bonanza, Black Willie, Dozer, Smash Hit , Hot Stuff, Jim Dippin’and ABBI super-stars Panama Red, Shanghai, Gigilo and most recently, the always fresh and flashy Red Dirt Road. From many of these bulls, their offspring and Simpson’s original base females, a superior herd has been established over the years. Although the doors at Diamond S are always open to prospective purchasers, the opportunity provided in their annual Earth Shattering Bucking Genetics Sale causes the most excitement.

14 March/April 2010

ffffffffffffffff

If you’re in the market for some top-notch females and competitive bucking bull prospects come join Simpson, ranch manager Scott Pickens and the rest of the Diamond S crew at their beautiful, newly renovated facility in Weatherford, Texas for this annual event. Besides daughters from their star bull, Diamond S will also be offering three live breedings to Avalanche and Cat Daddy at the sale. There will also be some Reindeer Dippin’ and Panhandle Slim embryos offered. Bidders will also have the opportunity to buy half interest in Diamond S futurity bulls. The festivities get under way on April 30 with the sale preview and dinner. “I am very excited about my second annual sale coming up,” said Simpson. “Our first one was a huge success and I am hoping this year’s will be even better. All of the activities are going to be at the ranch this year instead of the hotel we used last year. “We are going to be having Justin McBride play on Friday night which should be very fun for everyone. I have put my

ffffffffffffffff

best genetics in this year’s sale, just as I did last year. There will also be some great opportunities for people to partner with me on my best 2-year-old bulls.” Don’t stay out too late on Friday night though because things get cracking at 8 am the next day with the first section of the futurity. The futurity this year is also the second leg of the prestigious Triple Horn Series where $1 million in Bonus Bucks could be won. After the first section of 2-year-olds have wet your competitive appetite, look for Simpson’s neighbor and the original registry founder Bob Tallman to peak your interest from 11am-2 pm with helpful pedigree insight and colorful commentary during the sale. Following the sale, the bucking excitement continues with the second section of the futurity, and culminates with the final round. When the Second Annual event closes, attendees will have been treated to some of the industry’s best food, socializing, genetic offerings and futurity bull competition imaginable.

With the New Year well underway, we hope that you are as excited about the start of another successful year as we are here in the ABBI office.

compete in the Futurity division this year. We have already held four Classic Events in 2010 and the competition is proving to be even better than last season. We are seeing many familiar bulls as well as last year’s Futurity competitors and some new bovine athletes. The 2009 year-end registrations have been entered a whole month earlier compared to last year and our staff continues to work diligently to serve our Breeder’s needs. As we move forward, we would like to keep you in the loop on new policies and procedures, as well as take the time to remind breeders of topics that may have been forgotten while dealing with the hustle and bustle of life.

For many of you, 2010 calves are hitting the ground and the excitement of finding out whether or not your breeding decisions are going to pay off is lurking around the corner. Your 2008 calves are probably in training and it is only a matter of time until you crack the gate and find out if they will make your cut to

Remember as you continue to submit registrations that all information needs to be accompanied by a 2010 Work Order Form. This sheet not only gives you the prices for services you are requesting, but also allows us to know what you want done with the information you send in. Additionally, it is crucial that you use ONLY 2010 forms as some fields have changed. Failure to submit your registrations on the correct forms or failure to submit COMPLETE forms may delay entry of your animals as well as DNA reporting. Keep in mind that in order for us to enter your animal into the system, we must have a birth date, herd number, gender and description. Also note that if you submit an animal with a name that is already taken by another animal in the registry,

We will no longer run against an entire inventory or “your 2007 cows” etc. A current membership and payment is required before any service will be completed. ABBI accepts checks, money orders, and credit cards. All funds must be in US dollars and drawn on a US bank with the exception of international credit cards. In an effort to help relieve some financial stress for our breeders in these tough economic times, we are offering a discounted registration rate for all ‘08 and ‘09 born cattle. Through March 31, cattle born in these years can be registered for $120 instead of $500 and $250 respectively. Starting April 1, 2010 all ‘08 and ‘09 cattle will go back to $250 per head. Cattle born 2007 and earlier will remain at $73 per head.

of books cannot be guaranteed. In regards to the American Heritage Futurities and Derby, we do require that each payment is submitted on the correct form. We will not accept payments by phone nor will we fill out your form for you. It is also important when paying by check that it is written to USBBA and not ABBI. Our Youth program continues to gain speed and we are doing our best to keep adding more opportunities for

our young bucking bull enthusiasts. New this year, we are allowing Youth Futurity bulls to be entered in open Futurities as well. We understand that the bulls are only two-years-old for a short time, and we feel that this is a necessary change in order for our breeders to maximize their earnings on futurity cattle. Bulls must still be entered in the Youth’s name at an ABBI Youth Futurity and all rules pertaining to flanking etc. will remain the same. We are planning to hold Youth Futurities in Ardmore, Tulsa, and Sulphur Springs again this year. We are also hopeful that a fourth Youth Futurity will be added to the schedule. Information confirming this event will be posted on the web site as it is received. ABBI is also excited about the addition of year end awards to recognize our Youth Members and their accomplishments! In addition, there has been a review of the payout schedule used for the Youth Futurities and the updated payout schedule can be found in the 2010 Rule Book. Finally, we would like to make you aware of a small change in the way that the Points and Standings will be tracked particularly pertaining to Classic animals. Points will no longer be used to determine the standing of Classic bulls and thus money won will be the main driver in calculating rank. However, the point system will still be the main source of rank for all Futurity animals. Our staff looks forward to serving you and we hope to see you down the road.

f New Faces

For those of you who have called the office recently, you may have heard some unfamiliar voices on the other end of the line. Lauryn Dunham joined our staff the end of November and has taken on numerous roles in our office. The genetic and historic value of Rafter G Rodeo’s bucking bred cow herd is untapped and undeniable. The exclusive program is possibly the deepest in the industry and has produced some of the rankest bulls ever seen. On April 10 at the ABBI Sanctioned Rafter G Dispersal Sale Neal and Jim

Gay will offer a once in a lifetime chance to purchase a piece of foundational, reproductive bucking bull history.

Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer Neal Gay embarked on quite an adventure

when he founded the Mesquite Rodeo in 1958. At first the event struggled, but Gay did whatever it took to pay the bills. While the start was meager the venture prospered over time with the guidance of Neal & Kay, and Mesquite Championship Rodeo became worldrenown. In 1999 the family sold the facility to the Hick’s Sports Group but continued to produce both the

from the Past

Bad Buckers, Big Bounties & Hot-Blooded Breeding Bulls “If you remember one thing about any of Neal and Jim’s bulls from the 80’s and 90’s remember this. The top guys would only get to see ‘em once or twice a season, but when they took these bulls out of Mesquite to rodeos like Ft. Worth, you’d better be ready because these suckers bucked! And just because most of their outs were at Mesquite under young riders don’t think these bulls didn’t get mounted and tested by the best riders in the world. They did and they were rank bulls.” —Allan Jordan, veteran bull riding judge Rafter G bucking bull success goes way back. In fact their first recorded bull in the spotlight was a bull called Booger Bear. In 1968 the bull was crowned bucking bull of the NFR and was the first in a string of Rafter G bulls awarded the title. Ringeye received it in 1974, Ruff & Ready in 1980 and maybe Rafter G’s rankest bull of all time Durango, received it in 2000.

the state legislature in 1993, which was the same year that Neal was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, joining his son Don to become the first father son inductees. 9. In 1992 Reader’s Digest featured Joe Wimberly’s third match-up with Bounty Bull Dodge Dakota. More impressive than the $17,000 bounty Wimberly nabbed for conquering the beast was the fact the story ran in eight different languages.

Red Rocker:

Among the most respected Rafter G bulls was G79 Red Rocker. Regardless of your bull riding prowess, if you drew Red Rocker you’d likely succumb to his authority. If it wasn’t in the form of a buck-off, it would often be at the end of your arm, the top of his head or beneath his thundering hooves after his strength jerked you down. Many bull riding greats had more than one chance to climb aboard Red Rocker. More times than not they would loose the battle the first time or two, but ultimately if they figured him out they’d be counting their money from the top of the scoreboard. Red Rocker was a rank bull in the arena and technically Rafter G’s first bonafide breeding bull. He lived to be 19 demonstrating his longevity in both the arena and in life. His daughters have been exceptional producers and excellent “keepers” that don’t show age. Lady Rocker, a G79 daughter gained notoriety after producing ABBI bucking, wonder-trio Shanghai, Panama Red and Gigolo for Glen McIIvain. David Simpson of Diamond S Bucking Bulls ultimately purchased the three full brothers, while their mother was purchased by the 4C’s for $34,000 at the ABBI sale in Las Vegas. The bigtime producer is also the mother of a bull that Gay is extremely excited about. “Bell Rocker is a young bull and sire by Western Rodeos’ Pacific Bell that we have really high hopes for in the future,” Gay said. Along with Red Rocker daughters came sons that excelled in the arena and played an instrumental role in the Rafter G breeding program. Both Red Rocker’s sons and daughters have produced NFR caliber bulls and subsequent females that have continued producing the next generation of bucker.

10. In 2008 the PBR Discovery Tour debuted at Mesquite to kick off the venue’s 51 season. 11. Dodge Durango is still listed as the 6 rankest bull of all time on probullstats.com and came from ABBI breeder Dwight Frick. 12. After drawing Red Rocker at the NFR in 1985 and getting bucked off Don Gay openly admitted “that’s the hardest I’ve

Lane Frost aboard Red Rocker at the 1988 NFR.

RED ROCKER: “I had him two years in a row in the short go at Ft. Worth. The first time I was 89 and won second and the following year I won first. I saw him have really rank trips with Denny (Flynn) at the NFR and with Glen (McIIvain). There were a few years there where they couldn’t ride him maybe because he had a little bit of a skip to him. What I do know is that he threw a lot of guys off.” —Wacey Cathey “He was a great bull that was strong and really bucked hard. There were no tricks about him he just went out, turned back and bucked hard. I got on him twice, but the time I really remember was at Jasper, Texas. I was 89 points on him which would be like being 96 now. It was a good ride but not a very good get off. He jerked me down and split my head open and then ran over me. If it had happened before the whistle, it sure would have hurt a lot worse.” —Jim Sharp “Red Rocker was back before a lot of the TV exposure, but let me tell you he was absolutely spectacular. If you did your job and rode him I guarantee you were gonna win all the money. He bucked, he hooked, he was pretty. He was probably a true 90 point bull back then when you couldn’t be 90.” —Allan Jordan “Red Rocker in his day would rank right there with today’s top PBR bulls. I had the opportunity to get on him three times. I was only successful once and it was a stop-watch decision. He was all bull from his heart to his attitude, and in my time of riding bulls one of the most difficult to make the 8 on.” —Glen McIIvain

ever been bucked off in my life” and that he was so sore the next day that he “could barely get out of bed”. 13. After leaving the Rafter G among a set of sold roping calves, big-league bucker Pandora’s Box eventually found stardom aboard Thomas Taylor’s truck and qualified for more NFR & PBR Finals under Taylor’s handling than any other bull to date. bullpenmagazine.com

DAKOTA:

“He was a brockle-faced black FTER RA nt.) o c ( that was right there to the left. He was fast, would jump out of it, move down the chutes and come again either left or right. He was real strong and kicked real hard and they couldn’t ride him.” —Allan Jordan “When I drew Dodge Dakota that third time, Neal rode up to the bucking chutes when I was getting on and said ‘Good Luck. Ride him if you can Joe’. When I did he was as proud of me as he would have been of one of his own boys and was the first person to come up and shake my hand.” —Joe Wimberly

Dakota: The Rafter G program is responsible for some of bull riding’s most notorious bounty bulls. The first a big and strong black brockle-faced bull called Dakota went 24 outs unridden and had a $17,000 bounty on his head before he was ridden by Joe Wimberly at Mesquite. The ride was Wimberly’s third attempt at the savvy bovine and translated into a large amount of money at the time. Wimberly’s quest to ride Dakota and save his family’s home was documented in Reader’s Digest which printed in eight languages, and in the book “Chicken Soup for the Country Soul”. Dakota was the real deal according to both riders and judges of the era. He had size, speed and heart. Although there aren’t many Dakota daughters the ones that exist and find themselves in the Dispersal Sale are sure to create some clatter.

Speck:

Johnny Rotten at Ft. Worth.

JOHNNY ROTTEN:

“I really liked Johnny Rotten. He was the perfect bull. I mean when he bucked he was all there. As a matter of fact a time or two in his younger years he would have trips of 23 and 24 at Ft. Worth. A lot of times they’d only ride him two or three seconds before he’d throw ‘em out of the arena. He was right there to the left and really got it. He’d really kick and come back underneath himself with lots of speed..” —Allan Jordan “Johnny Rotten was an outstanding black motley-faced horned bull I remember seeing at Ft. Worth. He was sure the kind and pretty mean and serious about it. You would have been really proud to have him standing in an ABBI classic event today.” —Joe Wimberly

20 March/April 2010

gram’s success was the addition of Mexican fighting blood. Anthrax and Twilight Zone are two Mexicanblooded bulls who’s influence can be found throughout Rafter G pedigrees. Gay used Twilight Zone on his heifers for many years. Even though he wasn’t bucked, he has turned out to be one of Rafter G’s best producing sires. From the initial cross of the hot-blooded bulls on daughters of Red Rocker, Speck and Durango sprang bulls like Purgatory, El Toro, Johnny Rotten, Crossroads II, Mission Impossible, The Professional and Sparky-several of which found their way to the NFR roster and back into the Rafter G breeding program. Some of these bulls even went on to produce sons of their own that went to the NFR. The females from this cross were then put back under the bigger type Rafter G bulls like Red Rocker, Speck, Dakota and Durango. This subsequent cross may bear the most impressive results yet.

Durango:

Rafter G bull Speck was another super-solid bucker that riders liked. A big part of the Rafter G genetics puzzle rests with Speck who passed on a lot of heat to his offspring. When he was crossed on Red Rocker daughters the result was several NFR bulls including Spectacular, Ned Pepper, The Rock and Jungle Boogie. Spectacular and two other Speck sons, Speck So and UnexSpected, were also crossed back into the hefty program.

Speck bucking at Ft. Worth

Anthrax & Twilight Zone:

In 1998 Durango replaced his predecessor Dakota in the bounty program. The big brindle ruled the roost and was never ridden. He remains the 6 ranked historical bucker of all time on probullstats and at one point had a reported $50,000 plus bounty on his head. In 2004 alone the bull tossed 103 consecutive riders each lasting on average only 2.24 seconds. Durango was already bucking when he was purchased from Dwight Frick so his true age is uncertain. However the brazen beast only recently died and is known to have been at least 19. The big-time bucker and prolific sire produced bulls like Big D, Smart Bomb and King Herod, while his daughters out of Twilight Zone cows continue to prove extraordinary and are expected to be a super hot offering at the sale.

f THE BREEDING PROGRAM:

Possibly the most important component to the Rafter G pro-

“These are people who know bulls and longevity. Neal had great bucking bulls all the way back through the 50’s,

60’s, 70’s and 80’s. They’ve always had a bunch of rank ones.”—Joe Wimberly Long-time industry insiders know the Rafter G breeding program has longevity and strength. The program has been producing rank bulls for generations. There also isn’t much argument that nobody knows more about bucking bulls than Neal who began cultivating the Rafter G program long before bucking bull breeding was cool. “They were one of the first people to actually try to raise bucking bulls. When I was young they’d go and buy whole truck loads of brindles and buck through ‘em. They took those good bulls like Red Rocker, Dakota and Speck plus the two Mexican fighting bulls and started crossing them-And man did that deal work,” recalled Wimberly. Longevity goes hand in hand with consecutive generations showing genetic improvement. Jim thinks this is something Rafter G has achieved and Veteran bull riding judge Allan Jordan confirmed it. “This year at Ft. Worth, they had calves that where as good as

anything going. Calves that were 22, 23 or 23 plus and they were young so we got to see them for four or five seconds. I was really impressed and told Jim that they were the best set of calves I’ve seen coming,” admitted Jordan. Although sale buyers might find lots with outside breeding like Super Dave, Ratjen, Russell, Page and even Houdini, the bulk of the offerings are homegrown. According to many within the industry this reality makes the Rafter G sale an even larger opportunity and Wimberly couldn’t agree more. “They really never went outside their herd much, so when people get some cows out of those rank bulls and go to crossing them with some of the lines that we see dominating the PBR and ABBI, I think you’ll see exceptional results,” said Wimberly. “I’m really looking forward to the sale. I’m going to try to get some of those cows and I think that everybody should. It will be interesting to see what people come out of there with. No doubt it will be real foundational stuff.”

Durango at Ft. Worth.

DURANGO:

“He probably got the most exposure out of all those rank bulls that they had, because of the bounty program and TV. At one point I think his bounty was up to like $50,000. He was a big, strong brindle and was right there to the left. He’d try to rare everybody back outa there and then bring ‘em down right over that right shoulder. He was rank and they never did ride him.” —Allan Jordan

The Bounty Bull programs

help to gain additional exposure and publicity for animals, riders and events by offering added money if cowboys can cover predetermined “bounty bulls.” Bounty bulls are traditionally some of the highest scoring bulls on tour-and among the most difficult to ride.

Cliff Wiggins

has been blessed when it comes to buckers. The commercial cattleman turned full-time bucking bull breeder has experienced his share of good fortune since getting started in 2005. The Ardmore, Oklahoma stock contractor readily admits it is a pretty cool deal partnering with his friends and neighbors on the other side of his fence—who just happen to be six-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year Dillon and H.D. Page. However, Wiggins has bucked-up to the challenge in his own right earning kudos for raising Top PBR bulls 10-5 Crosswired and 602 Wild Child. Interestingly, after buying five bred cows from Dillon and H.D. in 2005, Crosswired came out of that stock and was born on Wiggins’ ranch. His sire is Crossfire Hurricane and his dam is Page10-120, a Shorty daughter. Crosswired was the 2008 ABBI Classic World Champion. “We handled Crosswired, fed and raised him through his yearling year, and then made a trade back to the Pages to promote him so that they still co-own him,” Wiggins explained, noting, “I’ve been really lucky, because without Dillon and H.D., I never could’ve gone this far and fast in the industry.” “It’s been a good partnership,” H.D. agreed while eyeing their bulls at the Amarillo, Texas, PBR Challenger event in late January. “Cliff is a good friend and we’ve done a lot of swapping back and forth. The bulls we have together are either bulls Cliff bought or bulls we bought half interest in

24 March/April 2010

from him,” H.D. added. Now, stiff competition is tightening the ropes. In this new decade 2010, not only is it about premium bloodlines and genetics, but the so-called landscape is changing. “People are using better nutritional knowledge and crossbreeding for better genetics,” Wiggins said. H.D. agreed nutrition plays a key role in competition. “Ten years ago, I could’ve walked back here by the chutes and a few bulls looked strong. Now however, more of them look fit,” he noted. Also more popular now than ever is the concept of achieving hybrid vigor through outcrossing. “With a lot more people now in the business, many breeders are mixing up crosses,” H.D. observed. “Years ago, people stayed in their own breeding program, but now there’s a lot of outcrossing.” Meanwhile, he’s impressed with his partner’s up-andcoming stock. “Cliff’s got a really nice set of calves,” H.D. shared. Wiggins has been working it. “I caught the bug after I went to some sales, and now I’ve built a herd,” he acknowledged. With bloodlines like Crossfire Hurricane, Mossy Oak Mudslinger, Houdini, Crazy Train, Larry the Cable Guy, Sports Machine, Hustler, Wildlife, and others, Wiggins’ breeding program has gone from 40 females to a current count of 180 females and 50 bulls. “Now I have so many that I need to have a sale; probably in early fall,” Wiggins shared. Other than traveling to rodeos across Oklahoma and

“No one should get in this for short-term goals...” —Cliff Wiggins Texas, Wiggins is usually home on the range with his wife Renee. “We’ve been married ten years and she’s my best partner,” he grinned. Even with his success in breeding, Wiggins knows that “nobody’s a shoe-in.” Despite working hard to breed a herd of superior bulls, Wiggins saw that firsthand when his bull’s performance didn’t match his expectations at the recent Amarillo PBR. However, watching Cliff’s reaction was a lesson in itself; in rising above our circumstances, as the Oklahoma breeder smiled sheepishly and impressively shrugged off the disappointment. “Can’t stress about it,” he relayed. As he grabbed a bull flank and peered over the chutes checking on his other stock, Cliff‘s easy smile and peaceful demeanor (even in the midst of an intense situation) left an indelible impression. Wiggins rugged but calm presence was reassuring as he implied that even this small setback-like any other in life-really was alright. Interestingly, Wiggins biggest lesson in bull breeding has been patience. It’s also his greatest challenge. “No one should get in this for short-term goals, because it takes awhile to raise animals to a competitive and productive age,” Wiggins shared. He also emphasized the

importance of the ABBI registry, advising “you want to be sure the bulls are what they say they are.” With Crosswired, it’s all genetics. “He’s now 5 years old and will be a short round bull all year, if his performance continues.” So far this year, Crosswired earned the High Marked Bull at Anaheim, Calif., with a bull score of 46. Last year, Crosswired was ridden two out of 11 times, and had a buck-off percentage of 81.8%. Meanwhile, Wild Child, Wiggins’ other star which he shares with H.D. and Dillon, is “fit and sound.” The bull was an embryo calf Wiggins purchased at the 2005 ABBI Sale at the PBR World Finals and was born the following year. His sire is Wildlife and his dam is Page 7205-184, also the dam of PBR superstar 205 Holy Moley, and according to his owner is “still young and a little immature, but active.” Besides the two robust bulls propelling Wiggins enthusiasm, he has centered his road schedule this year around watching Crosswired compete at the elite Built Ford Tough Series Iron Cowboy bracket event at the new, world-class Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on Feb. 20 and preparing for Futurities. Wiggins’ success and relentless patience is a model we can all appreciate.

Rafter HB accepting their $10,500 at Ft. Worth.

f

RAFTER HB CATTLE CO. f f f f f f small company, big success f f f f f by susan bedford | photos by allen glanville

I still remember the first interview I did with Duston Hull of Rafter HB. Considering that I do well over 100 interviews a year, remembering any single one is rather unusual. It was right before the 2008 ABBI American Heritage Futurity event and we met for breakfast before the event at the IHOP in Ardmore. I was immediately impressed by how polite, well-informed and humble Duston was. But what stood out for me the most was how passionate and excited he was about being a part of the bucking bull industry. He knew it was going to take time, but he was confident that one day Rafter HB would have a champion. There was nothing cocky about his prediction; Duston just knew that they were going to work as hard as possible to succeed in the bucking bull business.

R

after HB had a lot to celebrate on New Year’s Eve. They rang in 2010 in Ft. Worth by toasting to the success of their bull Ice T&D. Their champion beat out some tough competition to win the New Year’s Eve ABBI Cowtown Classic event and nearly $10,500. 610 Ice T&D scored 88.75, beating out Bushwacker, Tomahawk and Jellybean by a quarter point for first. Back in 2008, Rafter HB was an operation that was just a few years old. Duston Hull, along with his parents Doug and Wanda and aunt and uncle, Dirk and Rhonda Been, got really serious about the bucking bull business when they all found themselves back together in McAlester, Okla. in 2004. After the Hulls had mostly “sale barn bulls” in the 90s in Texas, when they moved home they purchased some Crazy G cows with the Beens. That was their first actual “bucking stock” and the birth of Rafter H (Hull) B (Been). By 2005, they were ABBI

26 March/April 2010

members. By the last day of 2009, they had won their first ABBI event. “It felt pretty unreal to look at the Classic standings and see we had the No. 1 bull in the world,” recalled Duston Hull. “I had to ask a friend to keep pinching me. I just couldn’t believe it.” Hull had to keep pinching himself straight through the next major holiday when Ice T&D split seventh in Oklahoma City over Valentine’s weekend, retaining his spot at the top with over $12,500 in Classic earnings. Ice T&D came from Dan and Tawanna Cathey, which is also how he got his name T (Tawanna) and D (Dan). DC Cattle Co. is located just down the road from Rafter HB. “My folks have been friends with Danny and Tawanna for over 30 years,” shared Hull. “They were some of the first ABBI members who helped us along and got us involved with the ABBI. They had some bulls that did really well in the Futurities.” One of those bulls was T.D. Stinger, who

made a name for himself at ABBI Futurity events in 2005. Rafter HB also have used some T.D. Stinger bloodlines in their program. Ice T&D came from the Catheys a weanling for $1,000. “That may turn out to be the ultimate bargain!” said Hull. The day they went through and bucked the DC calves however, there were others that Hull liked better. “If there was anything that could have been done easily, he did it the other way,” recalled Hull of Ice T&D. “He fought the chute, he laid down, he bellowed. He was not my pick right off the bat. He looked really good, I just didn’t care much for him.” Hull didn’t think he was the best calf that day, but he thought he had heart and potential. Hull’s father Doug liked Ice T&D and that was the one they ultimately brought home. The second time Rafter HB bucked Ice T&D, at the end of his weanling year, the bull flipped over in the chute after getting tangled in the gate rope and broke his skull. “At first we just thought it was a

Ice T&D at Ft. Worth

broken horn and the vet put a cast on it. When we thought he was healed enough, we took him down to get his IED tag in June of 2008,” said Hull. The horn was still loose, so they knew something else was going on. Hull then decided to take the bull to Dr. Mark Barker In Newcastle, Okla. “Within 40 minutes, they told me they had his horn off and were picking bone fragments out of his head. They did an outstanding job,” stated Hull. “Dr. Baker said the longer we could keep from bucking him, the better off we’d be because if he ever bumped his head on that side it could spell disaster.” Dr. Barker’s father, Dr. L.D. Barker, was the veterinarian that removed Western Wishes’ horn. So Rafter HB turned him out and bred him to cows his 2-year-old year. At the end of the year in November, they brought Ice T&D back and put a kid on him at a junior rodeo and he was outstanding. “He leaped six feet into the air. Kicked over his head, turned back and was just a rank son of a gun! At that point I thought he was pretty special,” enthused Hull. Ice T&D is a 031 Wasp Stinger (Guidry breeding) son. Wasp Stinger’s dam is XS 31 Molly Tamale (who is also the dam of Spotted Lizard, who sired 13 Big Deal). Ice T&D’s dam is

28 March/April 2010

GRC W10 (Page breeding), whose sire was 00 Super Dave and dam was Page Breeding. Paternal grandsire Lil Wasp is also the sire of Boyd-Floyd’s 804 Snake Eyes and Diamond S’ 90 Astro among others. For his first season as a Classic bull, Ice T&D placed ninth at the ABBI Spring Spectacular. At the May 2009 4C’s event, he was seventh. He split fourth-seventh at the ABBI American Heritage Derby. Ice T&D was shaping up to be something great, but he still wasn’t cooperative. “In load alleys where he can’t see out he’ll just lay down like a dog!” said Hull. “And he still bellows like a bear!” In August 2009, Ice T&D suffered another injury the first night of competition in Weatherford and headed back to Dr. Barker. Ice T&D had a strained hock. “Dr. Baker did a great job nursing him back to health—as well as spoiling him!” chuckled Hull. “They gave him a daily rub around the head, neck and back. Now he expects it anytime you go out to feed him!”Dr. Barker and his staff were able to get Ice T& D nursed back to health and ready for Ft. Worth. 2010 has been a good (and healthy) year so far for Ice T&D, but Rafter HB is also excited about their bull Shot of Bo. Shot of Bo was the 2009 D&H Incentive champion, earn-

ing $15,000. “We are really excited about having him (Shot of Bo) entered in the American Heritage this year and hopefully at the Wild Card. My ultimate goal this year is to have Ice T&D and Shot of Bo in Las Vegas this year.” Shot of Bo, who was purchased at the 2008 D&H Sale is a Hot Shot son and grandson of Bodacious. Hull, who worked for the Pages a few years ago, made a point to learn all he could from the legendary father and son team. Hull now split his time keeping the bulls in his pen in line, as well as keeping men in the ‘big pen’ in line. Jokes Hull, “I’m not sure if the bull or prisoners are harder to work with.” Everyone in the Rafter HB family has a job outside of raising bucking bulls. It is a definite group effort and a lot of hard work has gone into the success the Rafter HB program has had. It hasn’t been easy, but Hull knows it all is worthwhile.“Sometimes you might wonder why you are in this business and why you do it. It takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears. But when you win, you know why you do it,” concluded Hull, unable to suppress a grin from ear to ear. “Ice T&D has been a blessing to us and his offspring are showing great potential for the future of our breeding program at the Rafter HB Cattle Co.”

I like this shot of 13/6 Bushwacker, owned by Julio Moreno/Richard Oliveria taken at the ABBI classic, Ft. Worth, Texas. This shows the power and leap of the bull after bucking off his rider and looking like his daddy Reindeer Dippin. This season it seems like we have more bulls with plenty of high leaping ability and it amazes me just how strong these bulls are becoming. Rider was Elliot Jacoby, ask him just how rank this bull was.

Girls Like Bulls Too!

C

By Hannah Gant

oming from the small town of Ludlow, South Dakota, a young breeder, Madison Rotenberger has big hopes for this year’s ABBI Jr. Futurity Competitions. Madison has not yet participated in the Jr. Futurities, but she is very excited to be a part of them this year. Madison is 9 years old and has two siblings, Molly (7) and Riggs (4). Her parents, Chad and Michelle Rotenberger have been members of the ABBI since 2003, thus developing Madison’s interest in the bucking bull business. She began becoming more into the idea with bulls during calving season around the farm, where she could see all the baby calves. She then got to watch them grow up, and helping her dad with the everyday chores got her outside and more in tune with how things work, and gained her interest. The Rotenberger Family has established their own breeding program known as Rowdy Bucking Bulls, which include bloodlines mostly from the legendary Houdini. Their family also has their own summer bull riding series, “Lil Rowdy Rodeo Gold Buckle Series.” When asked what Madison’s favorite part about it was, she responded, “I love helping load the bulls, and watch them as they buck the riders off.” She doesn’t stay behind the scenes; she likes to be a part of the productions. Madison already has her calf picked out for this year’s futurities. It’s a calf out of Houdini, and she plans on naming him Rowdy’s Second Chance. Madison stated that she is looking most forward to getting to flank her calf, and watch it buck in the up coming ABBI Jr. Futurity in June. She plans on attending all the ABBI Junior Futurities this year, and hopefully more to come. Not only is Madison a part of her family’s bucking bull business she also is a full-rounded cowgirl. She competes in rodeos all over the North, doing events such as pole bending, barrel racing, and goat tying. Madison was also named “The Jr. All around Cowgirl,” at Camp Crooks. She is a member of 4H where she shows sheep, goats and calves, and has taken home multiple ribbons. This year’s first ABBI Junior Futurity will be held in Ardmore, Oklahoma June 5-6. This is always a great event, and would be a super place for all ABBI Jr. Breeders to bring their calves to see what their bloodlines are made of. I hope all who are planning on entering are geared up and ready for another great season with the ABBI.

62 March/April 2010

Madison with Kahlua and their first all around cowgirl buckle.

Madison has been training Patches to do the rodeo events all by herself. She is very proud of that. Their summer started out pretty tough but they got it together by the end of August. She loves that little horse. They do everything in the arena and at home in the pasture together.

Bovine Trichomoniasis Trich Test Collection: Dr. Warner collecting a sample for Trichomoniasis testing.

B

ovine trichomoniasis is a reproductive disease of cattle which can have significant economic impact to cattle enterprises. Venereal transmission of the organism Tritrichomonas foetus can cause decreased reproductive efficiency in cattle. An infected cow becomes susceptible to early embryonic death, abortion, pyometra and transient infertility. In some areas of North America, particularly in the open range areas, as many as 50% of the herds may have been infected at one time. The organism has been known to exist for a number of years, maybe as long as one hundred years ago, but increased awareness has recently brought the disease process to the forefront of concern. Economic impact of the organism is significant and has made for more concern during the evolution of our current economic situation.

Description Tritrichomonas foetus is a flagellated protozoan which can inhabit the reproductive tract including the prepuce and distal penis in bulls and the vagina and uterus in cows. Protozoa are single celled organisms which are more complex than bacteria but have

64 March/April 2010

many similar characteristics. These organisms may be observed with simple light microscopy when grown in special culture medium and thus infection may be readily diagnosed. They have a very characteristic motion which may be readily identified. However, other species are normal residents of the gastrointestinal tract; if sampling becomes contaminated with fresh fecal material other testing may be required in order to properly identify the organism.

Transmission Transmission of this organism is from an infected bull to the susceptible cow or from the infected cow to the susceptible bull during breeding. Infection occurs when organisms are discharged from the mucosal membranes of the reproductive tracts of the male and female during service. T. Foetus cannot survive outside of its host, as it has no means of protecting itself from the environment. Thus,

unless some type of direct contact occurs with reproductive structures transmission other than by sexual contact is extremely unlikely. Once infected, bulls become chronic carriers of the infection; once they are infected they will always be infected. Bulls of yearling age or up to four years of age are not supposed to be able to harbor infection bythe organism T. Foetus. There has been scientific evidence that a young bull may spread the infection for a period of time after service of an infected cow (currently thought to only be about one hour) but will not chronically spread the infection. Mature bulls four years of age and over are the main reservoirs of infection. If left to the reside in their herd they will continue to infect healthy, susceptible cows. Cows usually self limit their infections, with the problem being eliminated one hundred twenty to one hundred fifty days after the initial introduction of the organism. However there are reports of cows main-

taining infection with T. foetus as long as nine weeks after delivery of a live calf. These types of infection may lead to a continued infection scenario within a herd. This situation brings to light the importance of insuring proper biosecurity when introducing new genetics into the herd, whether it is male or female. Be sure of your source of replacements in the herd.

Diagnosis Careful consideration should be given to herd history when evaluating reproductive inefficiency any scenario. Spontaneous abortions, retained fetal membranes and cows continuing to show estral activity for several cycles should provide warning signs that something is afoot with the herd. History of a mature bull entering the pasture, either thru purchase or from a neighboring pasture should help signify a problem may have been introduced. The simplest evaluation is to sample the smega of the prepuce of the bull for presence of the Tritrichomonas foetus organism. Care should be given in order the sample taken be free of contamination from the environment, particularly with any fecal matter. One negative growth culture of a suspected bull is not good enough to confirm a bull is negative. At least three cultures should be performed with good technique before suspicion of a bull’s status can be resolved. The Polymerase Chain Reaction test (PCR) is another good procedure to evaluate for the organism. This again requires sampling of smegma from the bull and culture of the sample but the test looks for DNA of the organism instead of the actual live organism to be identified. This test, if the sampling is performed correctly, only requires one procedure to identify the organism. Many states have enacted regulations to control trichomoniasis and reinfection of herds. You must be aware of these regulations before the movement of breeding cattle. If you suspect you have a problem in your herd please contact your local veterinary health care provider for advice as hw you may diagnose and deal with your problem. Remember—GOOD FENCES MAKE GOOD NEIGHBORS (Dr. Wallace Cardwell 1962).

the noise and glitter that goes along with the elite series events. Forty classic bulls made the trip to Oklahoma, and in this group were the top performing bulls of the season so far. This was the first time these bulls have been bucked before such a large noisy crowd. Under the bright lights of such a large event and it was interesting to see how they handled the pressure. With such a tough pen of bulls assembled, it was amazing that a bull came from out of no where to win the event. Boyd-Floyd / Cunningham’s bull 611 Minor Incident bucked his way to a score of 91.25 points and picked up a check for

66 March/April 2010

$10,833. Brad Boyd stated “We just bought this bull (611) from Byron Juma a few weeks ago and really didn’t know much about him—but we knew they were raising some great bucking bulls up in Wyoming. “To win these classic events takes a bull like 611. He’s got the kick the speed and turn back and is the total package. If a cowboy is still on his back after three seconds he just keeps bringing the heat. We are very proud of 611 for his accomplishment and are extremely happy for our new partner Larry Cunningham. Larry has been looking for a great classic bull for a couple of years and it looks as though

he has made the right choice.” Second place was bull 13/6 Bushwacker owned by Julio Moreno/Richard Oliveira with 90.25. 13/6 made a great recovery from his event in Amarillo, Texas. “13/6 bucks off his rider so fast it’s hard to see his ability but at this event he came back and looked good,” Moreno remarked. “Hopefully he will continue this trend and give the competition a run for their money this season.” Third went to 22S Priceless, owned by D&H Cattle Co. /L&E Bulls with 89.25, 4/5/6 were split between bulls 6799 Sleeper, Boyd-Floyd / Cunningham and Lightning C Cattle

asked to buck in the short go round. If that was not enough, 13/6 scored an amazing 47 points, bucking Ryan McConnell off like a rag doll in 1.5 seconds and being named the bull of the event. Moreno explained, “Kent Cox called me and said Cody Lambert had requested 13/6 to be in the short go and wanted to know if I agreed. Cox has been hauling my bulls for quite some time and I went with his decision. I sure am proud of Bushwacker’s performance and just look at the great bulls he out-performed. Kent Cox has always given me the best care an owner could ask for; I would trust him

“We just bought this bull (611) from Byron Juma a few weeks ago and really didn’t know much about him— but we knew they were raising some great bucking bulls up in Wyoming. —Brad Boyd Co’s bulls 632 Copp Hou and 61 Wine Hu all with 88.75. Many of the top Classic bulls had some problems at this event after achieving success at the previous events, leaving their owners scratching their heads looking for answers. The ‘strange turn of events bull’ went to 13/6 Bushwacker, who placed second in the Classic, and was

with anything of mine.” 13/6 in this short go round outperformed Code Blue, Big Tex, Crosswired, Spitfire and Black Pearl, plus others. This season is shaping up to be another great year for the ABBI and with this year’s crop of bulls; it’s going to be exciting.
