Badminton: BPPS emerged runners-up BPPS misses out in epic final. The wait for the elusive gold continues for Bukit Panjang Primary as they lost an epic West Zone Badminton final to Henry Park Primary earlier today at the “Theatre of Dreams”. Bukit Panjang put in a brilliant performance but were unexpectedly let down by nerves in what was a cracking final as both sides gave their all at the Bukit Gombak Sports Hall. The thriller lasted 10 minutes short of 3 hours and was full of brilliant shots and athleticism from both sides.
Henry Park lost the first two matches but bounced back to take the 2nd singles through their top seed who is ranked no. 1 in Singapore for his age. With the score at 2-1 in Bukit Panjang’s favour, both sides were feeling the pressure in the 2nd doubles. Bukit Panjang lost the first set but bounced back to take the next to force the match into its rubber set. The atmosphere was electrifying with the screams and shouts of encouragement from the supporters of both teams. Equally matched, the two teams were chasing each other relentlessly all the way until they tied at 2020. Deuce!
24-23! Bukit Panjang attempted a cross-court drop shot … and it went agonisingly wide. 25-23! Henry Park has overcome its deficit and tied the score at 2-2! Sensing the gold within their reach, Henry Park went for the kill. While Bukit Panjang put up a brave fight, they would unable to prevent the inevitable. Henry Park, rightly, will be lauded as a deserving champion but Bukit Panjang has underlined their reputation as one of the most successful underdogs to grace Bukit Gombak Sports Hall.
