What’s Hot in our Programs?

New Dream Makers Program The Dream Makers Program offers grants for down payments to first-time homebuyers of modest means who valiantly work to protect our Country’s national security. You don’t have to be a Pentagon Federal Credit Union member to benefit from Dream Makers, and you can apply the grant to a mortgage from any financial institution. How Do I Qualify? You’re eligible for a Dream Makers grant if: You’re Military (Active Duty, Reserve National Guard or Veteran), a Department of Defense employee or a Department of Homeland Security employee. You’re a first-time home buyer, or you have not owned a home for the last three years, or you have lost your home through divorce or disaster.

The gross annual income of all applicants used to qualify for mortgage is no more than the greater of: $55,000, or 80% of area median income, adjusted for family. What Steps Do I Take? Decide the amount of money you will contribute in down payment and closing costs to your mortgage financing. The minimum amount for you to contribute is $500. Dream Makers will match that three-to-one, up to our maximum of $5000. Estimate the size of your mortgage loan. Decide if the money you contribute, plus the Dream Makers grant, will be at least 3% of mortgage amount. You must put 3% down to qualify for the grant. Fill out Dream Makers application online https://www.penfed.org/PenFed-Foundation/

Living In The 80’s

Those of us that grew-up in the 80’s, are too young to be in the baby boomer/yuppie generations and too old to be in the gen-x generation. However during our time we experienced, we participated and defined more culture and sub-culture revolutions than any other generation. Our generation was more than seeing the end of the cold war, the invention of the Rubix Cube, Swatch Watches and Super Mario Brothers. What made our generation even more distinct from other generations was the music videos, the movies and most importantly the social attitudes. In the 80’s we witnessed the rise of punk rock, new wave music, nerds, stoners, preppies and the very beginning of MTV. We saw life and death in technology. Vinyl LP records were being replaced by CDs. VHS format video tapes won out over Beta format video tapes. Laser Disc movies were emerging. The home PC was on the rise. Home video games were starting to replace board games. And don’t forget that video killed the radio star. The amazing, but cool thing is that all those clothes we wore, all the music we listened to are all coming back. Those of us that lived in the 80’s, despite what our kids say, we are cool again. Natural dissaster preparednessCreating an emergency supply kit or “go bag” A ready-to-go supply kit, also commonly referred to as a “go bag,” will help your family leave home quickly in an emergency. The American Red Cross says that every emergency supply kit should have basic items: water, food, clothing, bedding, first-aid supplies, and tools. Keep your kits easily accessible in backpacks or other containers that aren’t too heavy to carry.

Include in them: Water. At least three days’ worth, one gallon per person per day. Food. At least three days’ worth of food that won’t spoil or go bad. Choose foods that don’t need cooking or refrigeration, such as peanut butter, dried fruits, energy bars, and canned meats and vegetables. Or buy the packaged and dehydrated foods used by campers, members of the military, and others. Clothing. At least three full days’ worth of clothing and footwear for each person in the family. Remember to include extra underwear and socks. Bedding. Sleeping bags or rolled blankets, stored near your supply kit. First-aid kit supplies. Prepare one for your home and one for your car. Check with your local Red Cross chapter or visit www.redcross.org to learn what should be included in a first-aid kit. Tools and supplies. A number of other items may also help in an emergency: • a battery-operated AM/FM radio and extra batteries • a flashlight and extra batteries or a wind-up flashlight • duct and reflector tape • plastic sheeting • various sizes of plastic bags that zip closed • water purification tablets • paper, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, and coloring paper • puzzles and games • local maps and a compass • a needle and thread • aluminum foil • matches • a can opener and bottle opener

You may also find it helpful to have some basic tools, such as pliers, a wrench, an ax, and a utility knife. Personal items. Basic toiletry items, such as toilet paper, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, feminine products, medications (two-week supply, if possible), extra eyeglasses, and contact lens solution. If you had time in an emergency, you would also want to grab a child’s favorite toy or security object, such as a blanket. Money. Include some cash, coins, and extra personal checks. Additional supplies for the car if you have one. These might include flares, booster cables, a shovel, a road atlas, a tire repair kit and pump, a thermal or an all-weather blanket, and a fire extinguisher (5lb., A-B-C type).

Maintaining your emergency supply kits Update your emergency supply kits once a year. Try making an “emergency kit cleanout day” an annual tradition. You’ll also want to update your kit whenever you have changes in a prescription or other essential items. Create a contents checklist. Date the list whenever changes have been made. Watch for government announcements about other supplies needed in times of specific threats. Go to the Web site for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), www.fema.gov, for more information. Remember, too, that the program that provided this publication has other helpful resources on preparing for and coping with disasters. There will always be events that you can’t fully anticipate or plan for. However, with careful preparation and practice, everyone in your Family will feel more capable and competent to deal with an emergency if it’s ever necessary.

Military Spouse’s Voice their Experiences during an event in their honor Army Community Service hosted a Special Event for Military Spouses in which a very enthusiastic group of attendees opened-up to share what Military life is about for them. The activity was opened with some words by CSM Derrick Simpson that represented the Garrison Commander. He expressed gratitude and highlighted the importance of Military Spouses within Army Readiness throughout history to present times. Ms. Teresa Rivera, FAP Educator, presented techniques to cope with stress and with the emotional burden of keeping up with day to day demands at home while their spouses are deployed. Mementos were given to participants. Ms. Lizmarie Jorge Alicea was inspired by comments at the activity, and wrote a very touching note which we share with our readers in this page. Enjoy!

Child, Youth & School Services ICYSmiles installed at Child Development Center Youth and School Services programs. Families at Fort Buchanan, PR are among the first in the Army to get their hands on the ICYSmiles video recording system, a new tool for military families to stay close to their far-away service members. On June 13th the system was installed at the Child Development Center. The ICYSmiles system – “I See Your Smiles” – gives family members another way to communicate with their service members. The touch screen technology is hightech but simple enough to use that even elementary school kids should have no problem making and sending messages to their loved ones. “This system will allow family members and friends to send up to three minute private video messages using the Army’s secure infrastructure to family and friends within the military and Army civilian community,” said Thomas Adderley, Functional Technology Specialist for CYS Services Fort Buchanan.

“Because Buchanan is a small post with few deployed service members, we will have to find creative ways to use the equipment.” “If a Soldier or Army civilian is TDY,” said Dieppa. “Their family member can send them a video as a morale boost, or the staff at CDC can make a video for a nervous new parent and send it to them at work. There are a lot of ways we can use this to support the Families and Soldiers.” “Anyone with an AKO account can receive one of these videos.” “This service grew directly out of the Army Family Covenant,” Adderley said. “It is intended to promote the morale of the Army’s Soldiers and Families by making it easier for separated families to stay in touch.” “While the system is installed at the Child Development Center, it is available to everyone, Active Duty, National Guard, Reservists and Retirees,” said Carmen Dieppa, the Coordinator of Fort Buchanan’s Child,

“We also have the capability to record video elsewhere, upload and send it to anyone with an AKO address,” said Angel Viruet, of the Garrison Information Services Office. If you would like to record a video, ICYSMiles is available anytime the CDC is open on a first come-first served basis during regular hours at the Child Development Center, Bldg. 1000 (M-F, 6:00 am to 6:00 pm). You do not have to be registered with CYSS to use the system. By: Thomas Adderly

Unauthorized Child Care, What is the 10 hour child care limit policy? The 10 hour child care limit policy means that in government housing units, adults may watch other people’s children for up to 10 hours per week on a regular basis without being certified as a Family Child Care (FCC) provider. Children from the same family count as one child. This policy is intended to differentiate those who wish only to help out friends from those providing child care services in their quarters. There is a difference between watching children a few hours each week and providing child care services as a profession. The following procedures have been established and will be followed when identifying that unauthorized child care services have been provided in Government Housing Units at this Installation: • Child, Youth & School Services management personnel will visit the home within 3 working days to verify whether or not an individual is operating a Family Child Care home without a valid certification.

• If it is determined that child care services in excess of 10 hours per week has been provided, the individual providing care services will be informed in writing within two working days about the policy violation and will be immediately informed to cease child care services. • Parents of the children in care will be notified in writing of the status of the individual providing care services to their children and will be informed that the child care provider has been providing services without a valid certification. • When an individual who has been notified in writing for violating the Army FCC requirements and has not made any attempt to begin certification process (within 10 days of receipt of notice of violation), CYSS personnel will proceed to notify in (writing) the Installation Commander and the Fort Buchanan Housing Department about said violation. It has always been an Army Tradition to help one another. It is not-and never has been-the intent of Child, Youth & School Services to eliminate such

“good neighbor” favors. Short-term childcare is not an exception. When can I watch my friend’s children? When can I leave my children with a friend? • When attending a class. • When going shopping. • When having a doctor’s appointment. • When participating in recreational activities. • When taking a weekend trip or a vacation. • When going on occasional short field exercises. For more information about Unauthorized Child Care/10 Hour Child Care limit policy or if you would like to become a Family Child Care (FCC) provider you may contact Ms. Carmen M. Dieppa, CYSS Chief at 787-707-3399.

Taking a staycation • a vacation at home Spend quality time with your family. The most important part of any vacation is spending quality time with your Family. Without all the hustle and bustle of a jam-packed vacation schedule, you’ll have the chance get to know your kids a little better and maybe spend a quiet evening with your spouse.

Staying home for vacation can be a great way to spend time with your Family and save a little money. If you travel a lot or have been deployed recently, you may not be interested in a long trip for your next vacation. With a little planning and creativity, a staycation can be relaxing and fun for everyone in the family. The following information will help you plan your next vacation at home.

Why a staycation?

Staycations can be a great idea for military Families, who often have the opportunity to live in different places. Maybe you haven’t lived in your new duty station long or you’ve spent your leave traveling home to visit extended family.

Taking a staycation means you can:

Save money. For many families, saving money is one of the biggest reasons to plan a staycation. Vacations can get expensive, especially if you have children. The price of hotel rooms alone can really drive up the cost of a traditional vacation. Sleep in your own bed. On a staycation, you can come home to your own bed each night. You won’t have to squeeze your whole family into a cramped, uncomfortable hotel or motel room. Less stress. A staycation can be a relaxing way to spend your time off. Without the long drive, airport delays, or search for accommodations, you’ll have more time to relax and have fun. See the sites. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the local area around your duty station since you’ve moved, now is your opportunity. Take advantage of what’s nearby -- you may never have a better chance.

Have fun. A staycation gives you the unique opportunity to have fun in your own backyard, try a new activity, or just go see a movie. It doesn’t really matter what you do, as long as you relax and have fun.

Planning your staycation Planning is the key to making your staycation great. As you begin, be sure to ask everyone in your family for ideas to get a good feel for what they want to do. It’s important to take everyone’s ideas and interests into account. What’s unique in your area? Pretend you’re a tourist -- do a little research and find out what’s interesting near your home. Go online to read restaurant reviews and check out local museums and attractions. Visit the Post Library to find guidebooks about your area. Budget. Take advantage of local coupons and military discounts to make your dollar go farther. Check with Fort buchanan’s Leisure Travel Office for discounted tickets to local attractions. Many amusement parks offer military discounts or discounts for local residents.

Summer destinations are accessible to you on Post Keep in mind that Fort Buchanan has an Outdoor Recreation facility where you can rent all kinds of outdoor sports equipment for camping, grilling, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaks, bicycles and much more for your Family adventures. Also, Outdoor Recreation offers trips every month to different parts of the Island for everyone to enjoy. This month of July they will feature a Catamaran Trip to Culebra Island, Scuba Diving Trip to Culebra, and a Family Day at Aguadilla’s Crashboat Beach. See page 10 for all the details. Split up. You don’t have to spend every minute together. Maybe the girls want to spend the afternoon at a water park while the boys see a movie. If you split up, everyone will get to do something they like. Get everyone involved. Let your children help pack the picnic lunch or fill water bottles for a day at the park. By sharing the workload, you’ll all have more fun. Make it a real vacation. Try to limit your time working, checking email, or calling the office. Source: www.militaryonesource.mil

Mix it up. Let each member of the family help plan. If your children are older, let them plan a whole day, including meals, activities, and budgeting. Take advantage of facilities on your installation. You can visit Fort Buchanan’s Bowling Center, Golf Course and Water Spout. 9
