Butler University Welcome To

BUTLER!

The five faculty and 113 students present when Butler University opened in 1855 laid a solid foundation for more than 150 years of creative change and progress. Today’s 4,200 students carry on that legacy, as they continue to look ahead while treasuring the traditions unique to Butler. The young school, originally named North Western Christian University, was unusually innovative. It was the first in Indiana, and only the third in the nation, to admit women on an equal basis with men. With the appointment in 1858 of Catherine Merrill as Demia Butler Professor of English, the institution became the second in the country to appoint a woman faculty member, the first to establish an endowed chair specifically for a female professor and the first to establish a professorship in English literature. The school was also the first in Indiana to allow its students, with parental consent, to choose subjects suited to their needs under a new “elective” system. As Indianapolis grew, the city’s commercial district began to penetrate the heavily-wooded campus at what is now the corner of Thirteenth Street and College Avenue. In 1873, the board of directors decided to sell the downtown campus and accept a gift of 25 acres in Irvington, then a suburb east of Indianapolis. In 1877, North Western Christian University became Butler University, taking the name of its founder and benefactor, Indianapolis attorney Ovid Butler. Butler moved again 50 years later, as the “Circle City” continued to grow. In 1928, classes were held for the first time in Jordan Hall, an imposing new Gothic structure erected on the beautiful Fairview Park Site, a wooded tract north of the city on the White River and the Inland Waterway Canal. Today’s students come from every state in the nation and from many foreign countries to enroll in degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, or in one of five professional colleges -- Business Administration, Education, Fine Arts, Liberal Arts, Communication or Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Butler is one of only 21 private schools in the country offering a pharmacy program.

Butler University

True to the vision of its founders, the University continues to offer an array of professional and pre-professional programs within the context of a strong commitment to the traditional arts and sciences and to the values of liberal education. Butler continues to welcome highly motivated, intellectually curious men and women, and to prepare them for lives of professional and community service and creative, ethical action. Butler is one of the top 20 US colleges for producing business executives, is in the top 10% for preparing future Ph.D.s and is located in the Number two city for college graduates starting a career. Although the thriving city of Indianapolis has once again grown to surround Butler University, the 290-acre campus remains a serenely beautiful area with 20 buildings, playing fields, a formal botanical garden, and a nature preserve surrounded by wellestablished residential communities. Located only five miles from “The Circle,” the heart of the city, the campus offers easy access to cultural and sporting events in downtown Indianapolis. Butler’s mission is to provide the highest quality of liberal and professional education and to integrate the liberal arts into profession education by creating, and fostering a stimulating intellectual community built upon interactive dialogue and inquiry among faculty and students. Butler University is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The University is licensed for teacher training by the State Department of Education in Indiana and appears on the approved list of the American Association of University Women.

Hinkle Fieldhouse

A True College Sports Cathedral Hinkle Fieldhouse has reigned as one of the nation’s great sports arenas for more than eight decades. The classic facility was constructed in 1928 and it has “Go to a Saturday afternoon basketball game stood up to the test of time, maintaining the splendor, character and atmosphere at Hinkle Fieldhouse, when the sunlight filters that made it one of the nation’s most famous basketball arenas more than half through the south windows. Among the changes to - Bill Benner, Indianapolis Star and News, Aug. 4, 1998 the historical building were new chairback seats in the lower arena, new doors and windows on the south side of the exterior, new basketball offices, a training room and locker rooms off the main arena, a VIP lounge, repaved parking lot, outside landscaping, extensive interior painting and a new public address system In more recent years, the Fieldhouse has received a new weight room, new football offices, sports information/marketing offices, administrative offices and a state-of-the-art sound system. All of the renovations have been geared toward upgrading the facility, while retaining the history and nostalgia of the home of “Hoosier Hysteria.” The original construction of Butler Fieldhouse was part of a massive project designed to give Butler one of the finest athletic plants in the nation. The project was financed by a corporation of 41 prominent and farsighted Indianapolis businessmen. Completion of the Fieldhouse was guaranteed when Butler signed a lease agreement with the Indiana High School Athletic Association allowing the high school state tournament to be Constructed in 1928, Hinkle Fieldhouse is on the National Register of Historic Buildings. played in the massive new facility. Hinkle Fieldhouse Butler played its first basketball game in the Fieldhouse on March 7, 1928, defeating Notre Dame 21-13, in overtime. Since the Fieldhouse was not entirely completed at that time, the building dedication was held off until December 21, 1928. The name of the facility was changed in 1966 from Butler Fieldhouse to Hinkle Fieldhouse in honor of Butler’s legendary coach and athletic director Paul D. “Tony” Hinkle, who built the University’s athletic tradition over nearly half a century. In addition to being the home of Butler basketball, the Fieldhouse has served as host to six U.S. presidents (Herbert Hoover, Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton), the Billy Graham Crusade, the Sonja Henie Ice Show, four professional basketball teams, the U.S. Olympic basketball trials, the first USSR-USA basketball game, all-star basketball games for the NBA and ABA and the East-West College All-Stars, the nationally-prominent Butler Relays in track, tennis matches of both Bill Tilden and Jack Kramer, the 1982 World Goal Ball Championships, a three-ring circus, several equestrian events, the Roller Derby, a six-day bicycle race, and the popular movie “Hoosiers.” The building also housed the U. S. military as a barracks during World War II. During the summer of 1987, Hinkle Fieldhouse again received national and international attention as the site for the volleyball competition at the 10th Pan American Games. The largest crowd ever to see a volleyball match in the United States (14,500) gathered in the Fieldhouse to see the USA defeat Cuba in the men’s gold medal match. When the Fieldhouse was originally constructed, it was the largest basketball arena in the United States and it retained that distinction for more than 20 years. Renovation in the early 1990’s reduced the seating capacity from 15,000 to around 10,000, but the aura and atmosphere that made Hinkle Fieldhouse the nation’s first great basketball arena remains.

When Hinkle Fieldhouse opened in 1928, the basketball floor ran east and west, which put more than half the seats at the ends of the court. The court was turned to its current configuration in the early 1930’s.

Dawgs In The Postseason

Three Straight WNIT Bids Butler has been one of the top programs in the Midwest during recent years. The Bulldogs won 20+ games from 2007-11 and made three trips to the WNIT as well as two appearances in the conference championship game. Butler 59, Duquesne 58 (March 19, 2009 - Pittsburgh, Pa.)

After more than a decade since the program’s last postseason victory, the Butler women’s basketball team didn’t mind the fact that it took nearly the full 40 minutes in its first round game of the WNIT to get another, as a lay-up in traffic by Candace Jones in the final seconds sent the Bulldogs to a grueling 59-58 come-from-behind win over host Duquesne at the A.J. Palumbo Center. Lade Akande led all scorers with 26 points and 12 rebounds, Brittany Bowen picked up her first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 boards and Susan Lester added 11 points as the Bulldogs improved to 20-11 on the season. Trailing by one with 14 seconds left in the seconds half, Jones took a pass from Tara Miller on the left side of the floor and drove from the timeline through a barrage of Duquesne defenders and banked in a soft lay-up to give the Bulldogs a one-point edge with 2.2 seconds on the clock.

Marquette 58, Butler 49 (March 23, 2009 - Milwaukee, Wis.)

Butler rallied from a 16-point deficit midway through the second period to pull to within one and put itself within striking distance in the final minutes, but host Marquette would hold on down the stretch to escape with a 58-49 decision in the second round of the 2009 Women’s National Invitation Tournament at the Al McGuire Center. Finding themselves on the short end of a 39-23 contest less than eight minutes into the second period, the Bulldogs rode an improbable 17-2 run over the ensuing six minutes to close to within one point at 41-40. The Golden Eagles responded with a quick 10-0 surge to boost the difference back out to 11 and maintained an 11-point edge with less than four minutes remaining. Butler once again bounced back, however, cutting the margin back down to four with just over a minute to go but could get no closer.

Duquesne burned its final timeout to draw up the last play of the game, but the final 3-point attempt at the buzzer sailed wide and the celebration was on for Butler. Akande finished with an 11-of-16 effort from the floor and a 4-for-7 mark from the line to post a season-high 26 points and added a game-high 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the year. Bowen picked up her first double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, while Lester chipped in 11 points and a team-high four assists. The Bulldogs took advantage of a 32-to-20 advantage in points in the paint and an impressive 19-to-4 margin in second-chance scoring. The Butler bench also out-scored the Dukes’ 36-to-13.

Candace Jones scored the winning basket against Duquesne in the 2009 WNIT first round. The Bulldogs huddle late in their WNIT game at Marquette.

Illinois State 57, Butler 54 (March 17, 2010 - Normal, Ill.)

Wisconsin 68, Butler 48 (March 16, 2011 - Madison, Wis.)

Senior Melanie Thornton led BU with a career-high 25 points, 15 rebounds and three steals. Junior Brittany Bowen added 14 points.

Butler was led by senior Brittany Bowen, who scored 14 points before fouling out late in the game. Seniors Azjah Bass and Chloe Hamilton added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Butler women’s basketball team saw its season come to a close Wednesday night in a 57-54 loss at Missouri Valley Conference champion Illinois State in the WNIT. The Bulldogs finish the year with a 23-10 record and their second consecutive season playing in the postseason.

ISU had the ball up 55-52 when BU got a stop and sophomore Devin Brierly dribbled the ball the length of the court for a lay-up to pull Butler to make it 55-54 with 26.4 seconds left. Butler had to foul and Maggie Krick made two free throws to put the RedBirds ahead 57-54 with 15 seconds to play. Junior Alyssa Pittman got two 3-pointers off but both hit the rim and fell to the floor as time expired.

A successful Butler women’s basketball season came to an end Wednesday night with a 68-48 loss at Wisconsin in the first round of the WNIT. BU, the runner-up in the Horizon League, finishes the season 20-14.

BU found itself in foul trouble in the first half but managed to hang tough with Wisconsin. With three players on the bench in foul trouble, Butler managed to take a 22-21 lead on a Hamilton lay-up with 4:19 left in the first half. Wisconsin closed the half on a 9-1 run to lead 3023 at the break.

“It’s playoff basketball and it was a great game,” head coach Beth Couture said. “I give Illinois State a lot of credit. They made shots in the first half. In the second half, we were more aggressive and at the end of the game we had two good looks by the player we want to have the ball at the end of the game.”

Being a Bulldog Strength & Conditioning

Butler athletes benefit from an extensive strength and conditioning program under the direction of Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jim Peal. The purpose of Butler’s strength training program is two-fold. One is to reduce the risk of injury and the second is to increase performance potential. By increasing the strength of each athlete’s muscles, bones and connective tissues, the chance of incurring an injury while performing lessens. The increase in functional strength is also an important step toward reaching the athlete’s athletic potential. The strength and conditioning program stresses flexibility, agility, jumping skills, speed and reaction time, as well as strength. The program utilizes free weights, strength machinery, manual resistance and additional innovative techniques to help maximize the chance for Butler athletes to succeed. The center of Butler’s strength and conditioning program is the 4,000-square foot weight training room located in Hinkle Fieldhouse. The weight room, which features an entire outside wall of glass, is stocked with free weights, weight machines, stationary bikes, stairmasters, and related apparatus, and allows Butler athletes to train in an open and comfortable environment.

Academic Support

Balancing the demands of NCAA Division I athletics with the responsibilities of a rigorous academic schedule is one of the biggest challenges facing collegiate student-athletes. To help ease that challenge Butler provides a dedicated academic support system. The Athletic Academic Support Offices are located in Hinkle Fieldhouse, where coordinator Sonya Hopkins and staff are available to assist student-athletes in solving academic and nonacademic problems. Butler offers its student-athletes academic and career counseling, guidance in study skills and time management, and academic tutoring. The academic staff monitors each student-athlete’s progress toward Butler’s degree requirements. Support services for student-athletes are provided on a by-need or by-student/coach request basis. Butler teams and student-athletes have won numerous league and national academic awards.

Sports Medicine

Butler student-athletes have access to a comprehensive sports medicine program that focuses on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries. Under the supervision of Head Athletic Trainer Ryan Galloy, Butler’s athletes are served by an extensive team of physicians, health care professionals and certified athletic trainers. The Bulldogs’ training room is located on the west end of Hinkle Fieldhouse, immediately behind the women’s basketball office. The training room is divided into four areas - rehabilitation and injury management, athlete preparation, administration and storage - and is fully equipped to provide thorough rehabilitation. Butler’s athletic training staff provides care for Butler student-athletes at practices and games, while also maintaining daily hours for treatment and rehabilitation. The staff also works to educate Butler’s student-athletes in the areas of injury prevention, nutrition and various wellness issues. Butler’s sports medicine program utilizes the extensive medical community in Indianapolis, which boasts one of the largest and most knowledgeable groups of sports medicine professionals in the nation. Butler student-athletes have access in Indianapolis to world-renowned medical facilities, as well as many of the leading physicians in the world of sports medicine.

Atlantic 10 Conference

11827 Canon Blvd., Suite 200 Newport News, Va. 23606 (757) 706-3040 Atlantic10.com

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketballonly affiliation has grown into a 16-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country.

That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Butler University, the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph’s University, S a i n t L o u i s U n i v e r s i t y, Temple University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Xavier University. In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating the sweeping conference realignment issues, adding Butler University and Virginia Commonwealth University, both of which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league was declared the “winner” of conference realignment by several media outlets, arguably strengthening the league to its best-ever lineup with a record 16 members institutions. The additions were part of a five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 16 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 82 million people within its geographic footprint of nine states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized a record 2,728 student-athletes in 2011-12. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2011-12, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Dayton’s Yvonne Marten, Jennifer Nalepa from Saint Louis, Marissa Norman of Rhode Island and Charlotte’s Macey Ruble received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 has 56 of the more than 950 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. The Atlantic 10 Conference ranks fourth in number of teams publically recognized by the NCAA and fifth in overall APR average among all 32 Division I Conferences with a 981 average. The league boasted 40 squads with perfect scores and 104 teams with a score of 990 or better. In total, 188 A-10 teams were at or above the national average, representing 70 percent of all A-10 teams. Of the 21 championship sponsored sports in the Atlantic 10, 19 had a sport average higher than the national average. There are six sports (field hockey, women’s cross country, lacrosse, women’s swimming & diving, women’s indoor track & field and women’s outdoor track & field) in which every A-10 team in that sport is above the national average. The Atlantic 10 boasted a third-place ranking in the single-year Graduation Success Rate (GSR) among all Division I leagues. Measured in a six-year window, 89 percent of freshman enrolling in an A-10 institution in 2004 graduated. Twelve of the league’s institutions were above the national four-year GSR average of 8o percent and five of those programs, Dayton, George Washington, Richmond, Saint Joseph’s and Xavier are all over 90 percent. The Atlantic 10 also rates in the Top 10 in men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball in the single-year GSR. The league is ninth nationally in men’s basketball, graduating at a 74 percent rate, nearly seven percent above the national average. In women’s basketball the league ranks sixth with an incredible 96 percent graduation rate for its 2004 freshman class, 10 percent higher than the national average. In baseball, the A-10 is tied for third nationally with an 87 percent GSR, also 10 percent higher than the national average.

COMPETE EVERY DAY YOUNG BULLDOGS ATTACKING THEIR FIRST SEASON IN THE ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE

The Butler women’s basketball team is jumping into a 2012-13 season that is full of unknowns. The Bulldogs have seven newcomers, the team’s leading scorer is out for the season and Butler is now a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. After multiple trips to the WNIT and Horizon League title game, Butler will be trying to crack the top of a deep and tough A-10 league. “It’s fun for me to be in the A-10 because we get to see where our program is,” head coach Beth Couture said. “Where are we going to be (in the A-10) this year? What’s our vision for the future? And for me, as the head coach, that’s the most fun.” Butler, which finished 9-9 in the Horizon League last year after four straight 20-win seasons, will be moving to one of college basketball’s power conferences in a year in which the team is one of the nation’s least experienced. According to an offseason survey, the Bulldogs enter 2012-13 as the 12th least experienced team in the country. “We’re definitely young, class-wise. But if you look at the minutes, we’re experienced,” Couture noted. “We are having to bring a lot of things together, but I’ll give our team credit. On the court, they’re a unit. And for this early for me to see a unit, that’s unheard of.” With all of the new elements in personnel, scheduling and conference affiliation thrown together, there is one thing Couture says is certain. This team will compete every day and will improve throughout the season. “It’s fun to be out there with this group,” Couture said. “They compete every day and we’ve not always had that. They try to make each other better. Our team, on the court, understands what they want to do. And that is to be successful. ”

NEW POINT GUARDS In Butler’s system, the point guard position is critical. Some of the best players during Couture’s time at Butler have been point guards, such as Nancy Bowden (2002-04), Jackie Closser (2003-07) and Terra Burns (2007-11). This year, the Bulldogs have two young point guards who are cut from the same mold as those former standouts in sophomore Taylor Schippers and freshman Lexus Murry. Schippers will be the primary ball-handler to start the season. The Texas native came to Butler after playing last season at Oklahoma State. She transferred during the offseason and was granted immediate eligibility. One of the top prep players in Texas two years ago, she started 17 games at OSU as a freshman. “Taylor is a talented basketball player who brings leadership to the point guard position, Couture said. “Offensively, she has deep range. She is very good at pushing the ball up the court. Coming in, we knew about he shooting, but I’ve been really impressed with her ability to make the right pass. Her passing is going to make it easy on our post players.” Schippers averaged. 25.0 points as a high school senior and then played in some big games as a freshman at the Big 12 level. She helped Oklahoma State to a WNIT title and scored a team-high 11 points against topranked Baylor. “Her experience at the BCS level has helped her here,” Couture said. “She understands what it takes to get us to the next level, because she’s been there.” The team’s other point guard is Murry, an athletic player from Indy’s south side. She was an all-state player at Decatur Central. Couture lauded Murry’s play on defense in the preseason. “Lex has done a great job,” the Butler coach

Amanda Raker (6-1, So.) Liz Stratman (6-2, So.) Olivia Wrencher (6-4, Fr.)

said. “She’s good on the ball defending and she can push the ball up the court as fast as anybody. With the improvements she has made, we fell like our point guard position is in good hands with Taylor and Lexus. They have both been tremendous.” PURE SHOOTERS ON THE WING Butler has a crop of wing players that may be young when you look at the roster, but these young players have played a lot of minutes. Junior Mandy McDivitt, known as a long-range shooter, returns after being a key reserve the previous two seasons. The other shooting guard is freshman Blaire Langlois and the small forwards on the other side are sophomores Hannah Douglas and Haley Howard. McDivitt, who played 25 minutes per game last year, has also developed into one of the team’s best defenders over the years. In 60 career games, 72 of her 81 field goals have come from beyond the arc. But Couture says McDivitt has added to her game in the offseason. “I’ve been very impressed with her moves off the dribble and some passes she has made,” Couture said. “If she can continue to do that, she’ll be more of a threat. She’s one of our older kids now because of injuries, and her experience in our system has helped her.” Langlois, a combo guard from Carmel, Ind., is a well-regarded player Couture expect to challenge for major minutes. The 5-8 Langlois can both shoot and handle the ball, as she spent a lot of time at point guard in high school. “Blaire is a pure shooter who can really see the floor,” Couture said. “She makes great passes. We’ve also been impressed with how ahead of the game she is defensively. She has a great knowledge for the game.” On the opposite wing, Butler will have Douglas and Howard, with Douglas also playing the

2012-13 Outlook shooting guard spot from time to time. Douglas started 28 games as a freshman last year, posting seven double-digit scoring games. The lefty Douglas broke out for 31 points in Butler’s home finale at the end of last season. She has proven to be a good rebounder and is effective in driving to the basket. “Hannah has improved her 3-point shot, she’s worked hard on being a consistent shooter,” Couture said. “However, her strength is going to be off the dribble. She has a great mid-range shot, and you don’t see that much anymore. And defensively, she’s solid. She’s one of our better communicators on defense.” Howard, a 5-11 forward from just south of Indy, started her college career last year with a bang. She was BU’s leading scorer in nonconference play, and at one point led the nation in free throw percentage. Injuries over the course of the season held her back a bit, but Howard still posted solid freshman numbers of 7.7 points and nearly 3.0 rebounds per game. She has come back healthy, with added muscle on her frame, and is primed to be a key player in 2012-13. “You can tell in Haley’s play that she is stronger. She doesn’t get pushed around,” Couture said. “She’s one of our best 3-point shooters and she is a great passer into the post. I think she’s going to bring a lot of positives to our team at the ‘3’ spot. She has settled into our system and she’ll be a better player this year.” TRANSFERS ANCHOR THE POST During practices last year, it was obvious that an infusion of talent was upcoming for Butler. A pair of transfers, Daress McClung and Liz Stratman, were sitting out after coming to Butler. Both players are impact players who will see their share of minutes this season. Sophomore Amanda Raker is back after gaining a year of experience and freshmen Katie Brewer and Olivia Wrencher are also expected to contribute.

McClung, an Indianapolis native, is the likely starter at the power forward spot. She attended Cincinnati for two seasons, suffered an injury then transferred to Butler. After redshirting last year, the 6-0 forward is ready to take the court for the Bulldogs. “Daress plays hard and brings it in practice every day, and that’s a great example for our young post players,” Couture said. “Daress is one of the smartest players I’ve coached on offense and defense,” Couture said. “She is a good outside shooter and has great moves on the block. She’ll definitely help with rebounding. Another piece to Butler’s post player puzzle is that 6-2 center Sarah Hamm and 6-1 forward Becca Bornhorst won’t play this year due to injuries. Hamm was an all-league player last year and BU’s leading scorer. Bornhorst was the only senior on the roster and made 31 career starts. That leaves Raker, who played 15.4 minutes per game last year, as one of the more experienced post players on the team. Couture says Raker is very much improved and up for the challenge. “I have been impressed with how much ‘Rake’ has improved on defense and in our system,” Couture said. “She is finishing strong under the basket and has shown a nice 15-foot jumper. And she does a good job going to the boards. She can play either post position.” Brewer, a freshman from Indianapolis, is a player Couture says is “full of talent.” The 6-1 Brewer can hit the outside shot and is continuing to develop her offense in the post. Couture compares her to former Butler standout Susan Lester, one of the school’s all-time leading scorers and rebounders. “Katie gets better every single day,” Couture said. ‘She has great range and touch. And she has a great nose for the ball. She broke all of her high school’s rebounding records. She finds the ball when it comes off the rim, and that’s what we need.” Wrencher is a 6-4 center from the Cincinnati

area who has the size and strength to match up against the physical play Butler will see in the Atlantic 10. From the start of preseason practice, Wrencher’s improvement has been obvious to the BU coaching staff. “From our first day, Olivia has improved more than any player I’ve coached,” Couture said. “She absorbs everything and is willing to learn. I think by league time, she’ll be somebody who helps us. Her future here will be amazing.” Finally, Butler will add the 6-2 Stratman after final exams in December. She transferred to BU after starting her freshman season at Xavier. Stratman was the player of the year in Indianapolis as a high school senior and will be a key player when she becomes eligible mid-year. “She is a scorer. She’s got the nice outside shot of a guard,” Couture said. “From 15 feet or a 3-pointer, or a step-back, she’s really good. She has good moves on the block and she’s a physical rebounder and defender. Her strength is that she runs the floor. By Christmas, she’ll bring depth to what I think is a strong nucleus of post players.” The Bulldogs are certainly eager to experience play in a new conference and to compete against the likes of Dayton, Xavier, St. Bonaventure, Temple and Duquesne. Couture made the point that with such a new team, there won’t be as much of a learning curve when it comes to the conference switch. “Out of our 11 players, only four played in the Horizon League,” the Butler coach said. “We have a confident group, and they’re excited to go to new places. But when we play the games, we’ll look at it all the same. At the end of the day, the kids don’t know any different. And that’s the attitude our kids have had. We’re going to work as hard as we can, and we’re going to go out and play.”

COUTURE

• Head Coach • 11th season at Butler • 24th season as a head coach • 419 career wins • 161 wins at Butler • Erskine ‘84

Under Beth Couture’s leadership, Butler has become a premier basketball program in the Midwest. Before 2012, Couture had led Butler to four consecutive 20-win seasons and three straight WNIT appearances. But with all of the team’s accomplishments in recent years, there is still more work to do. Butler and head coach Beth Couture are aiming for new territory: a league championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In her 10 seasons at Butler, Couture has continued to lead the Bulldogs to new heights with each successive season at the helm. In 2010-11, the Bulldogs placed second in both the Horizon League regular season and league tournament en route to a 20-14 record. The team captured the Horizon League’s automatic bid into the WNIT, where the Bulldogs played at the University of Wisconsin. In April 2011, Couture was honored at the NCAA Women’s Final Four for winning her 400th career game as a college head coach. She mentored the Bulldogs to a 23-10 record (14-4 Horizon League) in 2009-10, the team’s most wins in 12 years. Butler’s second straight WNIT appearance also marked the first time the program has had consecutive postseason berths since becoming a Division I team. In the spring of 2009, Couture took on perhaps her greatest opponent. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2009, but battled as only the veteran basketball coach could. She rushed through chemotherapy treatments and radiation in time to be on the sidelines for the team’s exhibition in November 2009. Couture has been cancer-free since 2010 and has now become one of the Indianapolis community’s leaders in the fight against the disease, participating in several breast cancer awareness events. She walked 38 miles over a two-day span for St. Vincent’s Weekend to End Breast Cancer and was the 2011 honorary chairwoman for the St. Vincent Woman of

16 • Butler Basketball

Hope group. Each Woman of Hope pledges to raise or donate $1,000 annually for the cancer cause of her choice. For her courage, Butler University honored her as 2010 Woman of Distinction, an annual award given about by Butler. The 2008-09 season was a historic one for Couture and the Bulldogs, as the team finished 20-12 (14-4 Horizon League) and advanced to

the second round of the WNIT. It was the team’s first postseason appearance since 1998. In 2007-08, Couture led the Dawgs to a major breakthrough as the team finished with 20 wins. Butler went 10-1 in non-league play that year, the best mark since Couture has been at

Butler. The successful season marked the first time since 1996 the program has posted backto-back 20-win seasons. When Couture first stepped onto the Butler campus, she knew she faced one of the toughest challenges of her coaching career. The Bulldog team that went 3-26 the season before she took the reins hardly resembled her squads at Presbyterian College, where she won nearly 70 percent of her games over the course of 13 seasons. But after developing the roster she inherited and infusing it with several talented recruiting classes, Couture has the Bulldogs consistently ranked among the Horizon League’s best. After doubling their win total in Couture’s first year at the helm, the Bulldogs went on to either match or increase their total victories in every season until 2010. Along the way, the program has had nine members named to All-Horizon League teams, five tabbed to the All-Newcomer Team and five mentioned on the All-Defensive squad. Additionally, six Couture recruits (Brittany Bowen, Alyssa Pittman, Susan Lester, Lade Akande, Jackie Closser and Ellen Hamilton) have gone on to score more than 1,000 points in their college careers. Butler finished the 2003-04 campaign with a 14-15 record, including a 9-7 Horizon League mark and appearance in the semi-finals of the league tournament. The Bulldogs came together when it counted most, posting victories in nine of their final 13 games for the team’s first winning league record in five seasons. A 14-14 overall record followed in 2004-05 before the Bulldogs improved to 15-14 in 200506 for the team’s first above-.500 overall mark since 1998-99. Butler increased its win total again in 2006-07, finishing with a 16-15 overall record and 11-5 mark in league play to place in a second-place tie in the conference, the team’s best league record and highest standing in nearly 10 years. The season culminated with the Bulldogs rolling to a pair of wins in the Horizon League Tournament and making their first appearance in the championship game since 1998. Couture began her collegiate head coaching career in 1989-90 at Presbyterian College. Thirteen successful seasons later, she had compiled an impressive 258-117 (.688) overall

Beth Couture record, including eight 20-win seasons. In addition, she led the program to six trips to the NCAA Division II national tournament in her final nine years. She led the team to three-straight South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season and SAC Tournament titles from 1998 to 2000. A four-time SAC Coach of the Year recipient, Couture mentored 18 all-conference selections and three conference players of the year. The 1999-2000 team went 28-2 and won the SAC regular season title with a 15-1 record. The Blue Hose also won the SAC Tournament title and hosted the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional Tournament. PC was ranked as high as fourth in the nation during that season. The only coach in the conference’s history to be named conference coach of the year in two different women’s sports, Couture guided the Blue Hose volleyball team to three national tournaments, including the school’s first-ever NCAA postseason appearance in 1993. She served as the team’s head coach from 1987-93, amassing an overall record of 233-50, winning SAC Volleyball Coach of the Year awards on three occasions. Couture also

served as an assistant director of athletics from 1993-2002. Couture spent two seasons as an assistant at Presbyterian from 1987-89, arriving after three years at the helm of Dixie High School in Due West, S.C., where she posted a 49-28 record. Couture’s commitment to academics has also been at the forefront of her career, as 25 of her student-athletes were named to the SAC Academic Honor Roll throughout her tenure at Presbyterian. The trend has continued at Butler as 11 players earned recognition on the Butler Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll during the Fall 2009 semester. A native of Greenville, S.C., Couture is a 1984 graduate of Erskine College where she was a four-time MVP selection in basketball for the Flying Fleet. A Kodak All-American honoree as a senior, Couture was inducted into the Erskine College Hall of Fame in December of 1989. She earned a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education from Erskine and went on to complete a master’s degree in the same field at Furman University in 1987.
