Good afternoon and welcome to our friends from Kendal Town, their players, supporters, Management and Directors and our loyal bunch of supporters those who made the trip up to Colwyn last week they deserve a medal, It was not good and it had promised so much with the previous weeks performance at Mossley, which while I have been here was one of the best all round team performances and I thought we were unlucky to not come away with a share of the spoils, Mike Sampson had what appeared a perfectly good goal ruled out after a so called "incident", Im coming all Arsene Wenger here "but having seen the video replay" I along with others could see nothing wrong with the goal and it was Mossley who were hanging on at the end and many of their supporters congratulated us on our performance. We go again today against a Glossop side who are in the lower reaches of the Division, we have had a good week in training and words have been spoken the lads know what's expected of them today and on Tuesday night when we face another team that is at the foot of the table Kendal Town. Whilst we are training we can see the developments taking place at the JMO Sports Park and the sooner the club can get back to its roots the better for all concerned, it looks as though its going to be a good venture for the club. Its not been easy for the supporters playing 20 miles from "Home" but those that do make the trip myself and the players thank you and Im sure those same sentiments are echoed by the Directors and committee members who run the club.

SATURDAY 23RD MARCH

UNITED V DROYLSDEN Kick off 3pm

In 1945 the club joined the semi-professional ranks becoming a member of the Lancashire Combination League and for the first time in its history Netherfield AFC played against Football League opposition that year when nearly 10,000 people watched the two FA Cup ties against local rivals Barrow. Netherfield AFC was soon established as a major Non-League club by taking the Lancashire Combination Championship in 1949 and again qualifying to meet a football league side, Gateshead in the FA Cup. Cup success was quickly becoming a tradition as in the following year, 1950, after defeating North Shields at Parkside in the 1st round the team travelled to Watford where over 15,000 people watched Netherfield AFC take on Watford in the 2nd round. Unfortunately for the travelling fans the home side ran out 6-0 winners. By the time Grimsby Town visited in 1956 it had been the 5th time in eight years that Netherfield AFC had reached the first round stage of the FA Cup. The 1963-4 season saw Netherfield finish runners up to Chorley in the Lancashire Combination, striker Tom Brownlee scoring an incredible season total of 76 goals. In January of the following year Brownlee was sold to Bradford City, however Netherfield still managed to win the the Combination Championship Division 1 title that year. It was the first time they had won it since 1949 In 1968 the club accepted the challenge of becoming a founder member of the Northern Premier League. However, the 1970's were not kind to Netherfield as they languished around the bottom of the Northern Premier League for most of the decade. In 1980 Netherfield and Bridlington Trinity set a record for cup tie replays that will likely never be broken, when they played each other seven times in the first round of the FA Trophy. After a total of thirteen and a half hours matchplay Netherfield won 2-0 to go through to the second round. In 2000 with the demise of shoe making in the town, and with the Netherfield site now a shopping complex, K Village, the club decided to re brand itself as Kendal Town to reflect it's relationship with the town. Although in recent years times have not been easy for Kendal Town there has been some success on the field, in 2003 they reached the final of the Marsden Cup and over 400 fans travelled to Accrington to watch them lose 2-0 to Conference side Leigh RMI. Season 2005-06 saw the Kendal's most successful season for 40 years as they achieved a promotion for the first time in their history to the Unibond Premier League. The run-in to the end of the season was a nail-biting one and Kendal missed automatic promotion on the last day of the season by a single goal difference. A packed Parkside Road witnessed a pulsating play-off final won by Kendal Town in the last minute when former Manager Peter Smith popped up to score the winning goal against Gresley Rovers to seal a famous promotion resulting in one of the biggest pitch invasions witnessed in Kendal! The 2007-8 season saw the club finish in mid table. The following two seasons were Town’s best in the Unibond Premier League where they secured two play-off places in a row losing in the semifinals each time. Longstanding Chairman David Willan was replaced by Haydon Munslow in 2010. Manager Lee Ashcroft left to join Northwich Victoria half way through the 2012-13 season taking many of the playing team with him. Steve Edmondson took over as Manager but despite winning many of the remaining games with a new hastily formed squad was unable to prevent the club being relegated. Their time in the NPL North has been one of consolidation. The 2014-15 started well for Michael Stringfellow with good results. A troubled period then followed with an outside Lancashire based business consortium trying hard to take over the Club. Internal friction amongst the Club’s members was mirrored by increasingly poor results on the pitch. Chairman Haydon Munslow resigned and was replaced by George Gudgeon. Michael Stringfellow resigned and was replaced by a new coaching team led by Gary Fawcett and the returning David Foster. The consortium withdrew. Results started to again improve leading to a mid-table finish. Further consolidation has continued since. 2018/19 marks the 100th Season for the Mintcakes

THE NON-LEAGUE SUPER PLAYOFFS – EXPLAINED I’ve mentioned in previous non-league monthlies that a new playoff system is coming into play for Steps 3 and 4 and they are not exactly simple to follow, i’ll try my best in this article to make sense of the madness as short and as simple as possible to gauge opinion on this. I also mentioned this in a recent edition of the South Shields FC match day programme but here, I’ll also talk about the Step 4 system

WHY ARE THESE NEW FORMATS BEING BROUGHT IN? Its all to do with the restructuring of nonleague at steps 3 and 4, this season a new 4th Step 3 league was created, the Southern League Central Premier and a new Step 4 league the Isthmian Division 1 South Central bringing the total number of leagues to 4 at Step 3 and 7 at Step 4. The goal is to have an 8th Step 4 division created in time for the 2021/22 season. But because of this in the meantime, there are uneven numbers being created. for instance in Step 4 you cannot replace 12 relegated Step 3 clubs with 14 promotees from Step 4 (2 from each) and the same with Step 3, 6 relegatees cannot be replaced with 8 promotees. This is where the FA have had to come in with what has been widely panned in terms of suggested structures, lets start with Step 3 as that is the easier to grasp of the two

STEP THREE – THE SUPER PLAYOFFS If I were to liken the promotion system at Step 3, think of it as like the tournament bracket for the NCAA March Madness . March Madness is a huge college basketball tournament in the United States March to determine the national champions. That comprises of 68 teams and is divided into 4 regions with the 4 winners invited to contest the “Final Four” weekend. Shrink it down to 16 teams divided between the 4 regional premier divisions and you get the Super Playoffs structure as shown in my very rough drawing of the system above. Basically put, each league’s playoff system is near identical to its EFL counterparts in the Championship, League 1 and League 2. The only difference being these playoff ties are single legged affairs with home advantage given to the club with the higher league placing. This applies for both the semi-finals and the final. Simples. However unlike previous seasons, these winners will not be promoted directly yet. As already mentioned, 8 into 6 doesn’t fit so this is where these new “super playoffs” come into play. Each of the 4 playoff winners will now be put into one more round with the ties arranged based on geographical preference. Home advantage would be given to the club with the best Points Per Game (PPG) ratio. The 2 winners will then be promoted to National League North or South depending on their geography. On the whole, its actually not that complicated a format to understand but it is criticised because it would mean that 2 playoff champions will NOT be promoted. This is all down to National League North and South only relegating 3 clubs each and not 4. If the latter were true, then simple, the 4 playoff champions would be promoted alongside the 4 league champions. Now I myself do not know who is responsible for NL North & South to stick with 3 down, whether its the National League or even the FA.

STEP FOUR – WIN YOUR PLAYOFFS, DON’T GO UP?!?!? However at Step 4, things get not complicated but more controversial. Here there are 7 leagues trying to promote into 4 leagues. And with three down from Step 3, if its two up from each Step 4 league, then 14 into 12 doesn’t fit. However the solution for this conundrum set out by the FA is controversial as they have set out that of the 7 playoff winners, 2 of them will NOT be promoted. It’s the sort of scenario that screams “How can that be?” Well the format is that each of the 7 teams that win their playoff finals will be ranked according to PPG ratio. This table below shows the ranking of all 28 teams currently in playoff spots (According to PPG) as of February 22nd 2019.

This format brings the situation that there will be some teams (mainly those in the bottom 8 of that table) that will go into their league’s promotion playoff competition with absolutely zero chance of winning promotion, especially in this case Berkhamsted who are bottom of the list at this point. Now I understand that like Step 3, this is also a short term fix until the FA can get an all new 8th Step 4 league set up (reportedly in time for the 2021-22 season) but in the meantime, we have this…well…mess of a format that will leave teams guessing right up until each playoff final is finished and also leave some teams with the thought of “well why are we even bothering?”

Thanks to Darren Tinmouth , Blyth Spartans supporters who has done his best to explain promotion and from the NPL and other like minded divisions, If you have anymore questions then please speak to th FA Darrens blogspot can be found at https://dazzla84.wordpress.com

The original fixture on Saturday 15th December was unfortunately abandoned after an injury to United's number 9 Oliver Van Veen

Skelmersdale Utd A-A Kendal Town For the second week running Skelmersdale Utds match failed to finish, couple these with the very late finish the week before when the referee was stretchered off theres certainly no shortage of incident at our games at the moment. This afternoons abandonment followed a long delay after Forward Oliver Van Veen sustained a head/neck injury requiring the emergency services. Oliver is fully conscious and responsive in hospital now which is great news and is awaiting a scan to reveal the extend of any possible neck/jaw injury, face is a bit of mess but he's in great spirits & not ruling himself out of playing next Saturday. Although on target for a point at the time of abandonment at 1-1 it would have been a scarcely deserved one so I'm glad we're getting a second crack at this fixture which is a real six pointer. Kendal got to grips with the difficult conditions much quicker and deservedly took the lead on 20mins through Brad Carroll who was the outstanding player in the pitch. Skelmersdale Utds best efforts came from range from Will Dunne, the pick of the outfield players for Utd, but two outstanding first half saves from Terry Smith kept Utd in the game. Utd drew level on 74mins, Will Dunnes free kick deflecting to centre back John Keatley who grabbed his first goal for the club, sadly this will now be expunged from the record books. Big shout out to our brilliant Physio Heather Vearncombe who looked after Olly superbly awaiting the ambulance and also to the cables ladies Lynda Derbyshire & Michelle Kirby who where also excellent with brollies/ blankets/coats etc. United lined up - Smith, Keegan, Griffiths, Molyneux M , Keatley, Molyneux T, Yeldrem, Dunne, Douglas, Moore, Mcloughlin - Subs Banks, Van Veen, Darcy, not used, Boden, Grimshaw Kendal Town line up - Dixon, Davies, Clarke, Grundy, McDonald, Thomas, Carroll, Akrigg, Buchan, Harries, Brown, Subs, Sambor - not used - Shearwood, Thomas
