Marin Alsop

Circus Maximus Friday, March 19 Marin Alsop, conductor The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” David Little: Screamer Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf John Corigliano: Symphony No. 3, “Circus Maximus”

André Watts

Our four-week carnival goes to the center ring with musical giants and tigers and wolves, oh my! We open with a quick work by David Little, who imagines a circus very nearly out of control—in laughter, music and mayhem. Prokofiev’s classic tale of a heroic boy and threatening wolf takes center stage, only to be followed by a crazy and gargantuan musical portrayal of the Circus Maximus from ancient Rome.

Barber, Bartók & Beethoven Friday, June 4 Marin Alsop, conductor André Watts, piano Barber: Adagio for Strings Bartók: Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor”

An Emperor of a Concerto in the hands of a Prince of the Piano. Renowned pianist André Watts returns to Baltimore with one of his grandest signature works, Beethoven’s last and greatest piano concerto. Music Director Marin Alsop leads performances of Barber’s achingly beautiful Adagio for Strings and offers contrast with a unique work of folk rhythms and tingling sonorities created by one of the 20th century’s most creative masters, Béla Bartók.

Steven Barta

Beethoven Triple Concerto Friday, May 7 Jonathan Carney, leader and violin Steven Barta, clarinet Phillip Kolker, bassoon Ilya Finkelshteyn, cello Jeffrey Sharkey, piano

BSO DEBUT

Schubert: Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished” Strauss: Duett-Concertino Beethoven: Triple Concerto

Join the BSO for an evening of collaborative intensity. This concert features treasures from across two centuries, artfully performed by four soloists drawn from the BSO’s principal musicians, as well as the director of the Peabody Institute. Schubert’s pulsing and lyrical “Unfinished” Symphony sets the stage with currents of heart-felt longing. Richard Strauss’ Duett-Concertino is a loving portrait of musical charm, and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, written for one of the composer’s best piano students, masterfully combines chamber music intimacy with orchestral power.
