Mr Matthew Shephard

Mrs Adeline Sutherland

As our fifth successful year draws to a close, it is time to look back and reflect on the achievements and developments of BSN…and what a year this has proved to be! It is hard to believe it is less than twelve months since I stood on the steps at our entrance welcoming both our returning, and our newest, students. And as I stood there next to the first arrivals, it was hard to tell who was more nervous: those who had moved overseas to a new school, a new home and a new country, or myself!

I am delighted to be part of such a vibrant and thriving school. To watch children walk into our school with smiles, enthusiasm, excitement and laugher makes me proud of all the staff for ensuring that we have a caring environment that fosters children’s social, emotional and educational needs. Working alongside dedicated and passionate teachers and watching the students progress in their learning has been one of the highlights and most rewarding parts of my job. It has been inspirational to watch the students grow in maturity and knowledge, excelling, not only in traditional subjects, but in Music, Art, Sport, and Drama and across the year. I would like to congratulate all the students and staff on all their achievements this year and thank all the parents for their continued help and support. As we reach the end of the year we say farewell to some of our students, we wish them all the best in their futures and to our returning students we hope you have a fantastic and safe summer and look forward to seeing you in August.

Headmaster

Of course, the warmth of the British School of Nanjing and the welcoming nature of her students, breeds confidence, and those same nervous faces now beam with that confidence; confidence that, wherever they go, they will always be a part of the British School of Nanjing family and that they need only to open up this yearbook to recall that. Opening this yearbook also shows the many events that we have been able to run; from Swimming Galas to Book Week, from the Winter Fair to Splash Day, the calendar at BSN has always been jam-packed! This year has also seen some ‘firsts’ – from performances at the JinLing Hall – testament to our growing size – to our Parents & Friends’ organised ‘Friday Formal’ – testament to the growing ages we cater for – BSN has developed and matured over the year; something I am confident it will continue to do as the years pass! However, this is not the time to look into the future, but to celebrate the past year – something best done by getting comfortable, perhaps with a coffee, and turning the page…

Deputy Head Teacher

Mr Matthew Bradley

Middle School Leader

A lot has changed this year, and the fact that it is me writing this is testament to that. Sadly we said goodbye in the middle of the year to our long standing Head of Middle School, Mr. Polson. We also say goodbye to a number of students. We will miss them all and hope that they enjoy their new schools as much as we enjoyed having them in this school. We have made many new friends and welcomed new faces. We have found in the school new ideas, and new ways of looking at things. And maybe this is the very nature of our education. As we face a next year in a new building, with new technology and new twists on old ideas, we should note the fact that change is a part of life. We are the same people, the school is the same school, the ethos is the same ethos; we merely embrace the future. But now, I would like to say thank you all for a wonderful year past and look back on some wonderful memories; though I must add I look forward to building many more with you all!

Ms Rajinderpal Gill

Foundation Stage leader This year has been a very active and exciting year for our Foundation staff and children! Throughout the year the children have participated in a variety of learning activities. They have shown off their talents during our Productions, Sports Day, Swimming Lessons and Splash Days, to name just of a few of the opportunities provided! From mark-making and story-telling in Pre-nursery to writing sentences and reading in Reception, there have been so many highlights as we have watched the children progress throughout the year. What is clear, is that the children in our Foundation Stage have grown in confidence and independence throughout the year - and this is due to the support from the parents, the dedication of the teaching staff and the determination of the children themselves. As such, I would like to thank all the children, staff and parents for a very successful year!

Mr Matthew Jones

- Primary Stage Leader

My daily walk down the corridor of the Primary Stage at BSN has made some sounds very familiar to me this year; The chorus of “How much is that doggie in the window?” rising up from Year One children as they sing a song about their favourite toys. Shouts of “I’ve got 5!”, “Give me 15!” ringing out from Year Two as they practise their number bonds to twenty. Year Three skip-counting in multiples of 3, 5 and 9 echoing down the hall. Then a sudden shout of “Haaaaiya!” from Year Four as they go for another round of “Kung Fu Punctuation”. All set to the clapping of the Year Five students as they lay down the beat for their own rap poems. But my favourite sound is the one I hear every morning. The sound of children talking excitedly about what they are going to do in another busy day at BSN!

In Pre-Nursery the children have had a fun packed educational year. Over the course of the year the children have all developed into more independent, inquisitive learners. The children have actively taken part in all areas of learning and experiences the school has to offer. They thoroughly enjoyed ‘Book Week’ and made a fantastic contribution to our Chinese New Year celebrations. The whole class made a tremendous effort with their swimming sessions and showed great enthusiasm when learning about ‘Mini Beasts’, ‘Weather’ and our ‘Recycling’ topics. The children have enjoyed working together as a class, in groups and individually. They have all made a tremendous amount of progress in all the six areas of learning and shown how adaptable and accommodating they are to changes to their routine. A huge ‘Well Done’ is due to all of the Pre-Nursery children for their outstanding achievements this year.

Through the themed topics, covering the six areas of learning for the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, the children are immersed in a variety of experiences to help them make sense of the world. The children are encouraged and supported to explore and investigate their learning environment indoors and outdoors. Play underpins all development and learning for young children and through planned and spontaneous play they develop intellectually, creatively, physically, socially and emotionally. The children in our Reception class have had a very exciting and busy year. All the children are able to work together, share and cooperate. They have been developing self-esteem and confidence - the basis for success in all areas of the curriculum. The children have been developing essential speaking and listening skills in a variety of situations. Through the introduction of phonics programmes they have begun to establish the building blocks for reading and writing. The children have been developing skills in mathematics through active learning. This includes counting, sorting, matching, making patterns, making connections, recognising relationships and working with numbers, shapes and measures.  The children have been developing the skills that help them make sense of the world through first-hand experiences that encourage exploration, observation, problem solving, critical thinking, decision-making and discussion.

: r e h c a e T r u o Y m Notes Fro

The children have been developing their skills of coordination, control, manipulation and movement. This involved using a range of equipment both indoors and

outside. Â The children have been developing their ideas through a range of media including art, music, movement and stories, which has supported the growth of their imagination.

I would like to thank all the children in our Reception class, their parents and Mrs. Shirley for their hard work and support throughout this year of development Reception Teacher Foundation Stage Coordinator

This year I have been very proud to be the Year One teacher of a group of 5 and 6 year olds who have made a tremendous amount of progress over the last three terms. Year One is such an exciting year to be in - whether it be as student or teacher. The children have made great leaps in their learning and are now at an age where they can form long lasting, meaningful friendships. One outstanding feature of this particular class is how international they are: we have students from Korea, Hong Kong, Italy, Germany, Scotland, England, Australia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, China, the Philippines, the Czech Republic and Singapore; a truly international class if ever there was one! It has been my pleasure and my privilege to watch these young children form strong friendships with each other. It struck me as I was preparing to write this how tolerant, how compassionate and how open minded these Year One children are. Throughout the year, as is the nature of an international school, we have had children arrive mid term. The children have always shown interest, acceptance and companionship to new friends. What an excellent foundation for learning and for life!

It’s been a busy year in Year Two, but what a lot of fun we have had along the way! We made lots of amazing crafts from Chinese dragons to box cars and created our own masterpieces in the style of Modigliani and Leonardo da Vinci. We enjoyed fantastic marble rewards from baking the bread that caused the Great Fire of London in 1666 to a trip to the Aquarium. In our assemblies we have transformed from Famous Olympic athletes to secret agents working for M.I.5 (+5) and even time-traveling tourists strolling along the promenade in 1900’s Britain! Of course, these fun activities are an important part of the wider curriculum and all of the children should feel proud of their considerable achievements this year. It has been a pleasure to work with such a lively, outgoing and entertaining group of children and we’ve enjoyed every minute!

Wow! What a year! Year 3 has been such a special year for everyone involved. It has been wonderful for the teachers, watching the children grow and develop as the year has progressed. Many of them entered Year 3 as meek as mice and are leaving as confident, outgoing individuals who know all their times tables. They have all taken great leaps in their learning and strive for perfection in the work that they do; and they have done a lot! We have had such a busy year learning about Vikings; about India; reading Myths and Legends; learning fractions and... well everything in between. The children gave great performances in their class assemblies and the Christmas show... not to mention the Lower School Production. Many of our budding athletes shone at Sports Day and danced like true professionals for the Chinese New Year. It has been lovely watching the team that is Year 3; a team of hard workers bound together by beautiful friendships. It has been such a memorable year. I would like to wish all the children good luck for Year 4! Year 3 Teacher

YEAR FOUR For a year we have been Year 4. Read Around the World was our favourite journey. In the middle of the week we raced around the tables. Meeting our targets was our weekly endeavor. Polo, Drake and Columbus were our guides on this annual journey of exploration and discovery. Over the moon and up the wall, we have been everywhere together. Nanjing Aquarium, the local river and the skyscrapers of downtown were just some of our fantastic voyages. Great journeys together for a year in Year 4.

The students of Year 5 has accomplished so much this year, and have particularly grown in their understanding of the world around them. As a class, they have cultivated an incredible knowledge of the countries of the world, and have taken particular joy in sharing what they have learned with each other.

: r e h c a e T r u o Y m Notes Fro

If the Year 5 class was a country, it would be an industrious and hard-working nation with happy citizens striving to make their country a better place. It would be a country where many different languages are spoken, and where all cultures are cherished and respected. It would be a land where knowledge is treasured, and where learning and fun go hand in hand with each other. It would be a place where everyone has a voice and where people aren’t afraid to take on new responsibilities. It would be a nation where sporting and educational successes are celebrated and special accomplishments are admired by all. If the Year 5 class was a country, it would be a wonderful place to live! This year has been a sensational year as pupils in Year 6 have adapted to life in the Middle School. There has been lots of hard work and many of memorable moments. It has been a pleasure to guide this class through this year, witnessing them progress and improve their skills as they begin to turn into young adults. This year has been packed with thrilling house tournaments; a wonderful Christmas Production, Sports Day and some fantastic performances in the School Production. All this squeezed into the busy schedule of the Middle School.

from this year.

The pupils have been working hard in Drama and English classes; improving their number and ICT skills and conducting many experiments in Science. All this and Art, Chinese, PE, Music. I am sure the pupils have enjoyed the experience just as much as the teachers and each has something they can take away

This year has truly been a great year and I am sure this only begins to scratch the surface of the many experiences that these pupils have enjoyed; experiences I am sure they will carry with them for a lifetime. Year 6 Form Tutor

Year 7 Students have had a year of many changes. We have seen a substantial number of students leave to continue their education in other countries and schools, and we have gained a similar number of students from other countries, other schools. If nothing else we have seen our ‘merry band of brothers’ change and yet remain a distinct unit of friends and colleagues. But it isn’t just the people that have changed it is also the person within. Year Seven have had an array of experiences which have brought memories we can hold on to as we progress through school and indeed our lives. Whether we were ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ or singing our fond farewells to London as evacuees we have taken part in Drama and Music throughout the school year. We have played Rugby, Basketball, Badminton as well as the odd game of 40-40. We have painted, added, written, set on fire, coloured in, cut out, dropped in acid... all in the name of Education.

: r e h c a e T r u o Y m Notes Fro

And what do we have to show for it? Reports and good grades, of course, but more than that we have begun a nest egg of memories with which to wile away those waking hours of our future selves. See you next year! Year 7 Form Tutor

I guess it is part and parcel of being such a modest form group, but every change can have a huge impact upon us. How could we ever forget Lisa and her birthday, Hyung Min or our ‘head honcho’ Mr.Polson? How could I ever compete? But the result is a wonderful group of students who have studied some fantastic things - way above the usual level of Year 8/9. I am very proud of all you have achieved.

Emily, Edith and Elva (I hope that any new students think carefully about their nomenclature), Sang Jun and Jae Hyun and our dear departing Max: I am pleased to have been your form tutor for the past term and look forward, just as we look back over these photographs, to next year and another year of a modestly-sized form group achieving huge success.

United Nations Day UN Day, or what we sometimes refer to as International Day is a feast for the eyes, nose and mouth! As an international school, we find opportunities throughout the year to celebrate our cultural diversity. UN Day is a special occasion where we embrace our cultural heritage and diversity and where children and staff come to school in traditional dress. During the day the children had opportunities to participate in activities based on different parts of the world. Parents help to make it a day to remember, by bringing in traditional food dishes to share. The lunchtime feast is like a huge family gathering, with parents, staff and students all enjoying the special treats.

Beaver Scouts

Beaver Scouts are the youngest section of the Scouting family. Their activities are based around making things, outdoor activities, singing, playing games, going out on visits, investigating nature, listening to stories, learning how to be safe and most importantly, making new friends.

Chinese New Year BSN celebrated Chinese New Year with a terrific assembly that gave every student a chance to show off their singing, dancing and spoken Chinese in different ways. The traditional lion dance made a distinctive climax to the show as, after the ceremonial ‘Painting of the eyes’, a newborn lion began a dance that symbolised bringing happiness, longevity and good luck to everybody in BSN.

eal The EAL students, and staff, have been having a great time this year! We’ve all worked really hard to improve our English and to communicate better in the classroom and in the playground. All the students have shown determination and grace under a lot of pressure to learn vocabulary and grammar, and work on all four languageskills as quickly as possible… tiring work for such young folk! Miss Taylor, Mrs Deutl and Mr King would all like to congratulate each and every one of our students- each one has improved due to their own individual perseverance as much as the encouragement from other students and their teachers. From Bluebirds over London to Cinderella, from letters and sounds to Shakespeare, from Introductions to the Perfect Past Continuous- it’s all been worth it to get so far. You are not only a joy to teach, and an inspiration to us all, but you make us feel like the luckiest teachers in BSN!

After School Activities

Every year the range of clubs offered changes according to the talents of the many members of staff we have at BSN. The choice of clubs this year has been extremely broad. The students have had the chance to participate in the standard clubs that are always popular like Cooking, Baking, ICT, Football, Basketball, Beavers but we have also had Egg Painting, German, Netball, Chinese Chess, Make a Monster and Podcast Club as new additions. The pride of students getting on the bus and showing their friends what they have made, baked and knitted has made every one of us smile. Clubs are an extremely important part of the school timetable because they allow the opportunity for the students to be involved in activities that wouldn’t normally be covered by the national curriculum.

Chinese

This year Chinese learners were taught in three different leveled groups. Teachers worked hard to make language learning practical and give a real sense of purpose to those who were learning Mandarin for the first time. Those who had a little more experience began to look at the beauty of written characters or the pinyin system, whilst native-speakers delved into a deeper understanding of Chinese, China and its culture and history.

Music

This year has been an incredibly busy year in the music department with every month having an event or performance to prepare for. The amount of performance opportunities available to the students has been increased greatly with students in the middle school now taking centre stage in every middle school assembly with a chance to perform. The sheer number of auditions for BSN Idol was incredible and it was fantastic to see all the hard work that the students had put into preparing for them. The number of students involved in Peripatetic Instrumental lessons has increased significantly this year and as such we have formed the beginnings of the school orchestra with a select number of violinists and pianists. The students have made me so incredibly proud of the progress, achievement and the high standard of performing this year and it sets the bar very high for next year but I know with the talent here at BSN that this is a goal that we can meet...and surpass.

Foundation Stage Productions The Litter Muncher In June the children very confidently acted out the story of the Litter Muncher. Leading up to our production the children learnt about Recycling. The story was set in a village called Lazy Daisy where the grass is green, the flowers are pretty and all the streets and pavements are tidy - thanks to the Litter Muncher. But one day the Litter Muncher feels too tired to collect the litter so the villagers lend a helping hand by reusing, reducing and recycling and their village becomes a nicer place to be. All the children in our Foundation Stage did a fantastic job. I would like to thank all the parents, children and staff for supporting Foundation’s outstanding performance.

Family Fun Days

Family Fun Days at BSN are planned, promoted & prepared by our Parents & Friends Organisation and are positively perfect events for the whole family. Typically the Family Fun Days feature football, food, fun and a lot more for families. Thanks must go to all of the wonderful parent volunteers who made the termly Family Fun Days possible!

FRIDAY FORMAL

Thanks to the hard work of the Parents & Friends Group, the students in our Upper School were treated to a first “Friday Formal this year. Dressed smartly, the students were served by a team of hardworking waiters with a sumptuous 3-course meal, before the dancing and games began. The only disappointment of the night was that it had to end!

Latin Fest at BSG This year, The Upper School celebrated all that’s best in the Arts by participating in Latin Festival at the British School of Guangzhou. Mid April, we excitedly flew to Guangzhou, where we were welcomed by the host families in our sister school, BSG. After settling in, the children participated in a variety of workshops. These included installation art, metal craft, drama, dance, ICT, music, photography and humanities. The British school of Guangzhou commands spectacular views into Nanhu Lake and its green surroundings. The children benefited from using the school’s new theatre, participating in drama and the performing arts. They worked in well equipped IT rooms, fully fitted music rooms, Mac music studio and the dance studio. The week penultimate activity was the finale that saw a cacophony of colours, sounds, movements and expressions in the school’s wellequipped auditorium. Tiredly, the Upper School returned to BSN; a little bit more grown up, independent and worldly-wise than at the beginning of the week. The children made many new friends and cherish the memories made at BSG.

Book Week

Book week was a week of quizzes, mystery tasks and assemblies. Who can forget the video by Mr Burrows and Year Five looking at why books are Rubbish? Or its sequel: Why books are brilliant! The last day, of course, was everyone’s chance to come dressed as his or her favourite book character. Who was Mr Bump, again?

Liz Million Liz Million came over from England to show us all what she does as an illustrator and writer of children’s books. She drew a fantastic picture of a giraffe during assembly and then came round all of our classes. She was really funny and helped us all draw our own cartoons.

BSN Idol BSN Idol was the biggest and best it has ever been at BSN with so many more entries that auditions had to span twice the time allotted! It was fantastic to see and hear so many new acts - all of which had something special about them. Ten places were originally made available for the final but, after completing the audition process, the number of finalists was upped to 14 because of the sheer quality of acts that had auditioned. After all the acts were finished the students had a chance to stretch their legs outside while the judges had the unenviable task of choosing a winner. The debate lasted the whole of break time and could have easily continued on much longer but an audience eagerly awaiting the results were gathered in the hall with baited breath. The winner was Faith Pang from Year 4 on the Piano who delivered a flawless performance. Runners up were Simon and Thea from Years 1 and 2 on the violin, with a special judges’ mention awarded to Miss JiaJia’s Street Dance Crew.

FS Xmas Humph the Camel

In December the children acted out the story of Humph the Camel with one hump, who took a long journey across the dessert to meet a very special baby. A variety of characters were played by the children who showed off their confidence and role-playing abilities so early on in the school year. There were the three wise kings, their helpers, the camels, the big bright star and all the little shinning stars, along with the very special baby and his parents, the sheep and the shepherds. And to finish it all off, our production ended with a very special visit from Santa who came with presents for the children!

Physical Education The Physical Education department at the British School of Nanjing offers a varied, balanced and differentiated curriculum that promotes maximum participation in a wide range of activities. It is Mr. Aylward’s desire that the curriculum implemented will increase the students interest and enthusiasm to participate in a variety of leisure interests, resulting in a lifelong passion to engage in an active and healthy lifestyle as an adult.

Sports Days Lower school sports Day:

Upper school sports day: On a warm and sunny afternoon Years 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 all competed to help their house win the honorary house cup! All children competed against others from their own class in events such as discus, shot put, long jump and sprints. For the track events the winner in each round earnt the opportunity to gain more points for their house by getting to compete in the track event final. Even though there was a slightly more competitive edge to the events, the children participated with enthusiasm and showed good sportsmanship as the Romans claimed first place overall!

Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 all got on the school coaches and made their way to the Jiangning Olympic stadium - built for the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games in 2014. The children spent the afternoon competing for their houses in a variety of events such as sprints and javelin to earn points for the four teams of the Vikings, Saxons, Normans and Romans. All the children looked so smart in their ‘house’ t-shirts and it was lovely to see the children enjoying the competitive yet fun atmosphere. All teams were strong on the day but it was the Romans who managed to earn the most points and claim the lower school sports day cup.

Swimming Gala All children at The British School of Nanjing get the opportunity to swim. Throughout the school the children learn the fundamental skills that establish improved technique in three major strokes (front crawl, back stroke and breast stroke). The swimming lessons culminate with our house Swimming Gala where all children are given the opportunity to swim for their house at an appropriate level.

Winter Fair BSN’s Winter Fair is time for BSN students to come together before leaving for the Christmas / New Year holiday break. Boasting games, prizes, winter snacks and a lot of Christmas cheer, the Winter Fair is a lovely prelude to the December holiday break.

QUEEN'S JUBILEE

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee In 2012 Her Majesty the Queen celebrated 60 years as the British Monarch. The official celebratory weekend took place from 2nd to 5th of June 2012. Over the weekend, many had watched the magnificent televised Thames River Pageant. Throughout the U.K. and the rest of the world, street parties celebrated this auspicious occasion. Not to miss out on a party, BSN held an outdoor picnic on Monday the 4th of June. The school’s football pitch was transformed into a street-party, decked with red, white and blue bunting, set up with table clothes, napkins and flower posies and the children, wearing hand-made hats, enjoyed cake and juice in the sunshine!

Student Artwork

Senior School Production

Bluebirds Over London ‘Bluebirds over London’, an original play by Mr Bradley with music by Mr McVey, offered an intimate and emotional theatrical experience provided by the backdrop of a 1940’s war torn landscape. It also offered a chance for Joel Wilkes to shout “Dead” seven times uninterrupted, and for Marine Cazamian to cry earnest tears in the ruins of ‘her parents‘ home. For the audience it was the opportunity to go on a wartime musical journey, following the lives some very special evacuees as they face the reality that sometimes life change can change, irreparably. And how did people respond? Parents sobbed, teachers wiped their tears, and students? “It was a little sad and funny.” “I enjoyed to see parents cry.” Then of course was the alternative ending- the director’s cut so to speak... You remember... the one with the head?!
