hen it comes to offering activities to suit the entire family, delicious dining options, and the best in retail offerings (whether golf or ski), there is no reason to look any further than Bryce Resort. For nearly 50 years, Bryce has delivered on its mission of meeting and exceeding expectations of all who visit. Members and visitors alike agree that the “Bryce Experience” is second to none. What sets the resort apart is its constant evolution. Starting as a small ski resort in the 60s, it continued to grow because of the vision of its members and the public. Today, spring and summer activities include golf, grass tubing (yes, we were the first in the U.S. to have grass tubing), grass skiing/boarding, fishing, Lake activities, and mountain adventure sports. There is also a full array of children’s and early teen’s specialty day camps. New this year is the Lift Access

Fishing on Stoney Creek/ Fly Fishing with Murray’s Fly Shop in conjunction with Bryce Resort

T

hree years ago Bryce Resort formed a joint venture with Murray’s Fly Fishing Shop in Edinburg, VA, which introduced visitors and guests to the joys of fishing. This year 450+ rainbow trout have been stocked in our stream, thereby enhancing the spring and summer experience. Purchase daily fishing passes for $10 or a season pass for $100 at the resort and cast your line into clear, sparkling water. Don’t have a fishing rod? No worries, you can rent Orvis rods and tackle. We will even sell you the flies! A Virginia fresh water fishing license is required. All fishing is catch and release.

Bryce Resort

If you are a fly fishing aficionado, or think you would like to be, take advantage of our fly fishing school designed by Harry Murray and taught by Murray’s Fly Shop certified instructors following Harry’s signature “On-the-Stream” school format. The school emphasizes the fun of fly fishing while maintaining a level of instruction suitable for the participants in a safe and friendly environment. Class size is limited to 4 people, reservations are required. Fly rods, reels, leaders, flies and permit are provided. Call 540-984-4212 or 540856-2121, ext. 229 to book. Students will meet at the Bryce Ski School. From there it is just a short walk to the casting lawn, demonstration area; then fish in beautiful Stoney Creek with your instructor. Wear comfortable attire that you don’t mind getting a little dirty, but no sandals, flip flops or crocs, please. A Virginia fresh water fishing license is required – no trout license needed. If you are a Virginia resident under the age of 16, or a non-resident under the age of 12, you do not need a fishing license.

All you need to do is enjoy the ride up the mountain and take in the scenery of the surrounding mountains and all the beauty that Bryce Resort and the Shenandoah Valley has to offer. It has an average grade of 5-6%, a solid 8-year old should be able to comfortably ride this run. With swooping, flowing conditions that require very little braking, it will be fun for beginners and accomplished riders alike. Along with the beginner trail, there is an intermediate jump track and a couple of other runs that approximately 70% of all guests will be able to negotiate, an advanced trail, and a “pro” downhill trail. All of these have a variety of wooden features, and fun signature pieces. Overall, almost 5 miles of trails are mapped out on the terrain, leading 12 • Bryce Resort

Zip Line Adventure Tour, Bungee, Climbing Wall

I

ntroduced in the summer of 2008, Bryce Resort’s enhanced mountain activities have proved to be a major success. Attracting crowds all summer long, these activities provide the entire family with enjoyment and stimulating fun. Jumping, climbing, or zipping – lots of choices for having fun! For something fast how about a zip down the mountain on the zip line? With newly relocated zip stations to enhance the experience, this fastpaced tour attracts participants of all ages – some as old as 85 and as young as 10. Meet in the Resort ski school first to get a short orientation on the ins-and-outs of zip-lining, safety procedures, and how to make the most of your adventure. Take the chair lift and then a short hike to the first station, and begin your “flight” down the mountain. Experienced zip line attendants will help you into a special harness, give you some last minute encouragement and send you down to the next station. Reaching speeds of 40mph, at heights upwards of 65-feet, this heart-racing scenic tour of Basye/Bryce Mountain will give you the thrill that has been missing from your life. Growing from 10 stations, there are now 13 stations winding through the woods and down the ski slopes. The entire tour takes about an hour and a half. Minimum age for “zipping” is 8 years of age and 70lbs, maximum weight is 240lbs. Proper attire is

he Virginia Museum of the Civil War interprets the Civil War in the Commonwealth of Virginia where 60% of the war’s battles took place. The state museum is located on the famed New Market, VA Battlefield where the Virginia Military Institute Cadets helped achieve victory on May 15, 1864. Uniforms and weapons of the period, along with personal stories, dioramas and the Emmy-winning film “Field of Lost Shoes” bring the period to life. The museum store offers a wide variety of regional products and an excellent book selection. Paul Schweizer, Building a Brand at Cedar Ridge Lodge at Bryce Resort

P

aul Schweizer is the owner of Cedar Ridge Lodge at Bryce Resort. While he is operating a lodge, he is also focusing on building a brand that he hopes will bring new visitors to the Shenandoah Valley for years to come.

Q. How did you get into the lodging business? I love the resort and lodging business. I graduated with a degree in Hotel/Hospitality Administration from Florida State University. Although my main career path has been in capital medical sales, I have spent a great amount of time traveling and have been fortunate to experience so many levels of accommodations at hotels. I try to set Cedar Ridge Lodge’s accommodation features and quality of stay to a level that guests recognize.

Cedar Ridge Lodge has evolved over the 9 years I’ve owned it. The “rustic-lodge theme” was important to me because in the setting of the mountains and ski facility here at Bryce, I really believe guests love and want that type of accommodation for their vacation. Q. Have customers been pleased with their experiences at Cedar Ridge Lodge? My guests are usually quite shocked upon arrival and in most cases text me comments like, “Wow! This is amazing.” The Western, Cowboy theme is part of the “aura” at Cedar Ridge Lodge and it evokes a very warm comfortable feeling of being out in a ski area of Aspen or Vail, Colorado, some guests have said.

Q. Have you used the Bryce Guide in the past for marketing purQ. You are based in Florida, how poses? Once guests confirm their did you discover Bryce Resort? I reservation, they receive their Cedar lived in the DC metro area for years and still have a home there. I found Bryce Resort to be an attractive get-away within 90 miles from the DC area. Q. What made you decide to open Cedar Lodge at Bryce Resort? Bryce Resort

Ridge Lodge Vacation Package filled with a lot of helpful information including the Bryce Resort & Northern Shenandoah Travel Guide. Guests really appreciate all the information and acknowledge the attention to detail that Cedar Ridge Lodge offers. Q. What are your future plans in the lodging business? Well... (laughing) part of my plans are all good and exciting, but not yet ready for release yet! I'm also considering another larger lodge-themed accommodation complete with full-service, a beautful lodge lobby with a grand fireplace and multiple numbers of suites suited for larger numbers of resort goers, golfers and skiers that would only enhance the offerings here at Bryce Resort. In setting up the interior design and furnishings of Cedar Ridge Lodge, I felt it was important to support local businesses in and around New Market and Mount Jackson. I purchased from local businesses for the most part. The Home Store, which is privately owned in New Market, is a business I frequent often each time a new phase or upgrade is added.

for Cedar Ridge Lodge? Next up, Cedar Ridge Lodge is planning for extensive exterior architecture stonework and authentic Virginia Log accents both in the interior and exterior to enhance the rustic appearance and feeling of the lodge.
